I surprised they rejected a few of these to be honest these are great.

Thanks! They get hundreds/thousands of submissions a week, so it's not too surprising. Sold my first one a few months ago and fingers crossed a second sale comes soon!

Kudos -- what is TNY paying per toon these days?

535

u/Casual_Deviant Bummer Party 22d ago

Thanks! It’s not always perfectly up to date, but I generally use this as my guide for what the various markets pay: https://colemantoons.com/marketlist.php

u/seetons 22d ago

Am I really led to believe here that the WSJ pays only $170 for a cartoon and they need to be sent to a gmail address?

257

u/Casual_Deviant Bummer Party 22d ago

Correct!

It's been decades but I don't remember cartoons in the WSJ, just those engraved style line drawings. Maybe it's that. But still. You'd be surprised how the sausage is made in every industry. A gmail address is kinda sophisticated for the shit I've seen. So much of the world is dependant on a laptop that's been on since Obama was president and everyone forgot about it under a bunch of files somewhere in a back room.

Shit, I had to talk my team out of moving a server to an raspberry pi and stick it somewhere. I had to explain all the ways that's stupid in detail before they have up on the idea. And the bill really isn't that much anyway so I'm not sure what they were trying to solve.

And the number of times entire departments were held together with literal duct tape. I've worked for some big places and seen some shit man

154

u/Continental__Drifter 22d ago

It's the WSJ.
They're a fucking joke.
I'm surprised it isn't yahoo address.

13

u/jewrassic_park-1940 22d ago

Come on man why the drive-by

28

u/cortesoft 22d ago

Why would they pay more than that when paying $170 gets them thousands of submissions a week, with good enough quality that they are rejecting ones as good as the ones in this post? I don’t think the quality would go up much if they paid more.

19

u/purplepluppy 22d ago

Well that's the WSJ not New Yorker.

8

u/TheSorceIsFrong 22d ago

Pickleball Magazine pays 150 lol

9

u/turikk 22d ago

Am I really led to believe here that the WSJ pays only $170 for a cartoon and they need to be sent to a gmail address?

this is a 3rd party site collecting various submission methods and many are dead links. i trust /u/Casual_Deviant but i'd take this with a grain of salt, there is probably a better way to do it.

33

u/Casual_Deviant Bummer Party 22d ago

I have sold cartoons to the WSJ — I can confirm it’s the correct email address!

9

u/turikk 22d ago

i wonder if this is a secret back channel to the editor of that column. i might have to ask my family member who worked at WSJ 😂

18

u/Casual_Deviant Bummer Party 22d ago

WSJ actually contracts out their cartoons to a syndication company, so you’re emailing a small business vs. anyone at the actual newspaper.

61

u/AsstBalrog 22d ago

Thanks. Planet Nude Newsletter is cheap AF, but bragging rights I suppose.

It's a simple site that does exactly what it needs to and nothing else. It's old perfection. A lost art really.

40

u/chimpfunkz 22d ago

That's an HTML website that he built himself in a week. It works exactly as it needs to, and requires zero upkeep other than content. He pays $0 for web development to accomplish 100% of the goals.

Do they ever give you any useful feedback as to why they were rejected?

It makes me wonder, whether it might be prudent to try and re-submit the same cartoon later in time? Some of those are really, really good and I can't imagine the New Yorker not using them.

49

u/Casual_Deviant Bummer Party 22d ago

People do often submit the same toon a few times! I’ve done it from time to time with some that I think are especially good, but usually I just shop them around to other markets and end up posting them on social media.

8

u/debasic 22d ago

It's probably just a handful of people deciding on these

31

u/Casual_Deviant Bummer Party 22d ago

It’s primarily the Cartoon Editor!

Hope you guys enjoy!

If you want more cartoons (that are funnier than mine), I run a quarterly Reverse Caption Contest for artists — everyone receives the same prompt and has to create the cartoon that turns it into a punchline. We're currently in the voting stage, so you can browse the 69 submissions and vote for your favorites here.

(Plus, a lot of r/comics regulars are competing!)

28

u/cyllibi 22d ago

Cool contest. I love a lot of the entries. Don't have the skill to realize it, but my immediate thought when I saw the theme was a door opening to an immediate stone wall with a cut out for a person a la The Enigma of Amigara Fault and the door opener gesturing to someone else in the room "This is for you".

29

u/Casual_Deviant Bummer Party 22d ago

We actually get submissions from absolute beginners (like literally never drawn a cartoon before in their life) that do very well because the joke is able to carry the cartoon, so I wouldn’t let “skill” stop you from entering future contests!

Also we do allow joint entries, so if you’ve got a friend who’s a talented artist, send your idea their way and work together on it!

9

u/infinityonhigh69 22d ago

i love this!! just had so many little giggles. i voted and ill be back on the 5th to see who won 🫡

4

u/ShaminderDulai 22d ago

Yes! Love this idea and just signed up!

3

u/StevenStephen 22d ago

Honestly, I absolutely loved them. I found them funnier than most I see in the New Yorker. *shrugs

3

u/A_Poor_Miser 22d ago

My favorites gotta be the cave couple that did not make it to the discovery of fire ending up in Hell

179

u/gruesomeflowers 22d ago

thank you..i came here looking for an understanding of that panel, and now i have one.

82

u/theStrawberryRoam 22d ago

Ohhh I thought they were in hospital gowns. Okay that's funny

18

u/angelbelle 22d ago

I thought the joke was that they're punished for not believing in god before the abrahamic religions were invented but yours is more fun

34

u/-wolfinator- 22d ago

No it's a joke about the discovery of fire.

6

u/BlaBlub85 22d ago

Technically, at least the catholic church got that one covered by various edicts & decrees by varying popes. Theres provisions for aliens (extraterrestrials, not foreigners) too

Short version: Everyone that was prevented from learning about Jesus for reasons of time or location (uncontacted tribes as well as extraterrestrials) goes to a version of purgatory where they get the chance to accept Jesus as their saviour and thus be redeemed

Bald eagle

214

u/llamagoelz 22d ago

Wow. Why did I also need that one explained to me? Lol

74

u/cullenjwebb 22d ago

Yeah I was trying to figure out what the hair meant on the other eagle, I feel silly now.

5

u/mrandr01d 22d ago

Dude. I just got that. I thought the hair was to show it was a girl eagle 😆

10

u/TrainDestroyer 22d ago

Sometimes the joke is really just that simple, you're looking for what the punchline is with the out of place eagle and don't realize "Oh they're literally called bald eagles"

5

u/Little_Cake 22d ago

I just forgot they were called bald eagles in English

7

u/dudeAwEsome101 22d ago

Oooooh, the long hair the honestly distracted me from the fact he is a bald eagle. Sorry, just Eagle.

3

u/lotec 22d ago

Ah, I initially thought it was Mr Eagle - pronounced as Mystery Gal.

Bald Eagle makes way more sense lol

"Tell them we met on tinder" is killing me

147

u/Glove-Box-Heart 22d ago

For real, my husband and I met online in the 90s, and tbh it was an embarrassing thing to admit at the time. We used to lie and say a mutual friend introduced us.

42

u/peon2 22d ago

Even as late as 2009 when I was in HS there was a "rumor" that our bio teacher met her fiance on online dating as if it was some scandalous or embarassing thing.

Flashforward 4 years and probably 80% of us were on Tinder lol.

18

u/xXDJjonesXx 22d ago

There was this Smosh sketch years ago which made fun of this exact thing happening. They showed a couple in the 2000s lying about meeting online and saying they met irl, and then a couple in the 2010s lying about meeting irl and saying they met online.

4

u/Quaytsar 22d ago

Was your mutual friend AOL?

4

u/nitid_name 22d ago

In the oughts, my neighbors told me I was "brave" for saying I met my then girlfriend on Match or whatever we used back then.

I like the clown and Matryoshka doll one because it implies that the trick behind clown cars is that one clown simply reproduces via binary fission.

197

u/Cat-Sonantis 22d ago

I avoided Amazon for ages, then several of the things I used to avoid it started using Amazon logistics for shipping. They seem to be unavoidable...

78

u/kelsiersghost 22d ago

Something like half the internet is hosted on AWS now.

28

u/Beldarak 22d ago

I try to use a local equivalent in my country but they often don't have a lot of choices, it's kinda annoying but every buy where I don't give money to Bezos feels like a big victory :)

13

u/Cat-Sonantis 22d ago

Not a lot of choices is fine, no choices for the thing or things I'm going for kinda changes it though, sometimes even specialist shops might not have what I'm looking for. If I can avoid Amazon I will but it's just gaulling to go somewhere else to avoid only to have them deliver it anyway.

4

u/[deleted] 22d ago

[deleted]

3

u/Beldarak 21d ago

Yes. Boycott has pretty strong limits so I don't think it's worse getting bankrupt over it.

The best way is still to vote ethically, and try to build a better world where those 0-ethics companies couldn't exists.

I try to avoid Amazon as much as possible but won't lose sleep if I can't avoid it for some stuff. When you live in a broken society, you have to play by its crooked rules. But I thin kchange will come. More and more people are sick with the bullshit.

God, how I miss "The Rejection Collection." For those not in the know, someone at the New Yorker created a book with numerous rejected cartoons from various artists. There were so many "Yikes!" moments.

My favorite was a scene with two witches sitting at a restaurant table, reading the menu. One witch says "I'm thinking of having a baby." Yeah, it was that good.

15

u/auktember 22d ago

Cavemen before the invention of fire.

Ya know, spiky orange stuff all over the place

14

u/NicoBango 22d ago

The hell is that?

10

u/Burakku-Ren 22d ago

I didn’t really understand it. Is it saying people before the “invention” of fire didn’t know what it is? Most of the others I found genius but I don’t get this one.

30

u/UberNZ 22d ago

Well, you actually did get it, but I guess the extra layer is that it's obvious they would actually know what fire is, so it's poking fun at the idea that cavepeople invented fire. I guess there's also the layer of it being funny they're sent to the "bad" afterlife of a religion that was invented tens of thousands of years after they died.

Honestly, the more you think about it, the more absurd it is. It smashes together various things you hear as a kid, but which can't possibly coexist together.

11

u/zayetz 22d ago

It's poking fun at religion. The idea is, if there's this very specific afterlife for certain people, and it's been around for eternity, then what did early humans - who were around before the invention/observation of fire - think of it when they got sent to hell for being bad cave people?

It's an absurd joke because the joke is that religion is absurd.

My only personal nitpick is that peeing and crying should have been pissing and moaning, but that’s just me. These are great!

95

u/GrokLobster 22d ago

That one is my personal favorite. But also I like comparing the literalism of 'peeing and crying' against the aphorism, because I think it points out exactly what the hell it is you're actually saying.

24

u/AsstBalrog 22d ago

I think that's worth a re-work OP, might sell that way?

72

u/Casual_Deviant Bummer Party 22d ago

I actually disagree — I think it’s funnier the original way!

21

u/stillreallylikespace 22d ago

Yupp you're right, the comic props the absurdity and discordance of the second door with the common expression on the first. "Pissing and moaning" is just common slang too, where's the punch if you replace the original with a standard phrase?

Very common for women in business is being talked over or casually ignored, but if a man repeats the thing she just said people's eyes light up and they praise him for the Great Idea. I have heard examples from multiple colleagues.

I myself am quite loud and taller than most men, so no personal anecdotes. Apparently I'm usually intimidating enough to be heard.

21
