Forever The United States stress test was.. Oddly smooth? I didn't have to compete for tags after the first few minutes. Did Blizzard even get enough participants?

I know the timing was not ideal for a lot of people depending on your time zone, but after just a few minutes it felt like I was leveling on a dead server, and I can't tell if I get perma'd to a layer that just had no players on it or what. Legit was an empty starter zone on Alliance after the initial few minutes.

Wondering if they even got enough players to realistically stress test if I found my way on my own layer quickly after it launched for the United States.

The server was disconnecting you depending on where or what zone you were in

•

u/_leeloo_7_ 1h ago

yeah I was in mulgore seemed fine, my friend made an undead and was getting disconnected!

I said it was probably all the undead paladins so he came and made a tauren inside, no issues

•

u/Lost_Waldo_ 44m ago

I had no issues as an undead priest.

No issues as undead here.

Is the stress test over already? I was hoping to get on and fish.

•

u/Spleenseer 57m ago

It went down a few minutes ago

•

u/lhswr2014 56m ago

Damn, missed it. Wish they would’ve done it on a weekend lol.

Thanks for responding man.

•

u/Digital_Pirate85 55m ago

Yeah it was 2 hours I think. Or 3

•

u/kintaco 59m ago

That must have been the moment my layer went dead. At one point I was only seeing like three people near me.

There's no way blizzard would let a shard have this many players, it'd set their spaghetti code on fire.

•

u/Finances1212 58m ago

On beta there were around 700 confirmed players at one PvP event

•

Tbh looks like it's on fire to me.

Timing was really weird. Parents with a full time job like me for instance - I got off work, had dinner, fed baby, bath, etc. and after putting them down to sleep, I was able to stress test for 20 mins.

I imagine a lot of returning parents or just busy people weren’t able to make it

•

u/in_terrorem 19m ago

It was based around launch time though.

Beta is being hosted on a dev server. The stress test is likely on a prod servers and actually provisioned well enough. Literally the whole point of the stress test is to see if the real servers are up to snuff because the beta's infrastructure isn't that representative from a platform perspective.

Also that's the point of the layering. It shouldn't get bogged down with player limits on each server/layer. It's really a matter of figuring out frequency and boundaries (and linking of players) to make layering events a better player experience.

Finally someone who gets it

•

I'd even go a step further beta is on a test server, they have the next patch on the dev server. I don't see test servers get the amount of power prod's have. I think the beta was just on 1 server(region), where the live will have 2 servers (regions). I am curious how much it effects layering. I've slowly been learning db's over time so I'm kinda interesting in how it works. I kept telling people we haven't even had a real world test with layering and sharding.

As soon as the stress test was over the title switched to just forever and says playable nov 4th

•

u/Crazy_Function2733 50m ago

Yea i was manually adding addons to gamefiles for the test to add fresh configuration to my route and noticed the stress test install wasnt another classic beta but rather forever in the gsme files. Theyre definitely going to use this install for actual launch, and im glad i got to configure everything and have it all saved and carried through to launch

•

u/pigzyf5 1h ago

Do I have this right? Forever uses the sharding system not the layer system. Layers are continent wide, if there are too many people it makes a new layer but that 'too many people' is continent wide, so if everyone on a layer crams into the starting areas it is a mess. Forever uses sharding which are kind of like micro layers, zone wide or smaller. So there would be way way more shards in the starting zone than layers.

•

u/DirkaDurka 28m ago

Exactly. Theres fucking shards everywhere. Give me the lag over that shit

•

u/Digital_Pirate85 59m ago

The stress test title is gone it just says wow forever now playable nov 4th

•

u/Melthegaunt 1h ago

We had enough level ones to take down Hogger, felt good but didn't feel like a fresh launch.

•

u/wirblewind 1h ago

There's also a ton of people who arent going to pay to play the beta.

•

u/Katur 1h ago

Stress test was free.

•

u/calladc 1h ago

just weirdly timed. surprised it wasn't done on a weekend to get more people

•

u/Whiteshovel66 1h ago

well they have to be in office for it to be done obviously.

•

u/wirblewind 1h ago

News to me, so I'm gonna assume there's a lot of people that are in the same boat. Assume anyways.

•

u/youfoundKim 1h ago

People are being spread amongst shards to avoid overcrowding.

•

u/otheraccounthackedL 1h ago

This was my hope for launch, perfect

•

u/Finances1212 59m ago

Thank God, I’ll actually be able to enjoy the experience instead of fighting with other 5 mans for tags

•

u/Pigman02 34m ago

I don’t think that many people were actually trying to level up on the stress test…

•

u/D3ATHSQUAD 10m ago

You had to… everyone started at level 1

•

u/Kerosene8 31m ago

Same on the Euro server. It was me and like 5 others total levelling on the skyborne island 🤷

•

u/PayYourEditors 1h ago

Feel like 90% of people interested in Forever already played the weeks before

•

u/disparateassociation 1h ago

2pm pst on Wednesday what a great stress test lol. Shouldn't they schedule these around actual high population times?

•

u/realbasilisk 35m ago

Just a little bit of stress, as a treat.

•

u/Puzzleheaded-Fun1536 27m ago

Exactly the time the game launches is the idea I think

•

u/in_terrorem 21m ago

It kicked off 2 hours earlier than the launch time will be, but yeah I agree this seems to be the (sensible) logic

•

u/Blowyourpeabrain 1h ago

I saw one other person for the 4 lvls I got lol

•

u/JMAN_JMAN_JMAN 59m ago

I couldnt even log in... so...

•

u/Detharious 58m ago

Same.... I ran into asmongold's layer tho and it did definitely nuke itself.

Otherwise, quests were moderately populated but not to the point it was impossible to progress, no lag what so ever (other than the above) and layer refreshes were set to 30 minutes rather than 5.

Friends mentioned when the layers looked like they were getting swarmed players would be quickly layered off. So my assumption is the game loads you in and then begins dynamically layering you rather than one layer is massive and the others are small.

•

u/Inner_Ad_453 58m ago

Im amost lvl 10 and areas have been packed every where i go. Skyelf Rogue

•

u/roobchickenhawk 57m ago

I logged In, fired up a dworf and killed some pesky dogs. It was busy but I was able to complete the quest. I'd say it went well.

•

u/ScottShawnDeRocks 55m ago

I had fun. Back to beta for now. Alliance Skelf Druid (Balance).

•

u/Wombat_luke 47m ago

Wouldn’t let me login at all for the first ~20 mins but then was smooth yea

•

u/GeoBill79 38m ago

logged in right away. no lag at all. most quests worked (a couple didn't). layering issues exist. but overall smoooth. imo the game is a bit too buggy for release, but the 4 hrs went well overall.

•

u/Whiteshovel66 1h ago

I doubt it. Really had no incentive to download a seperate client just to log in for this. They had plenty of stress the day the beta launched. They made multiple blog posts about how it surprised them.

•

u/sphynxzyz 1h ago

Shows exactly what you know. The beta is on a seperate server, the stress test is a test on the production server. The beta test is a test on the software, the stress test is a test on the server.

•

u/Whiteshovel66 53m ago

Shows exactly what you are willing to make up, more like

They literally made blog posts about the accidental stress test the start of the beta was brother.

The "servers" ARE the software. The reason the beta had issues was be queries updating the tables that make up their sql database were not optimized and it was causing crashes. Aka, server instability.
Literally the exact same thing.

•

u/sphynxzyz 40m ago

They went from 1 server in US Central, to the regional servers. They are stressing the software, and the hardware of the pc. Just like your gaming pc has components a server does as well.

This doesn't mean the beta wasn't a stress test, thats on a different server connection it doesn't even speak to the server used today (unless they build a tunnel). They've been watching performance and will add memory, might have to get a different cpu. The crashed you had could have been multiple different things, without seeing a trace who knows, yes it could be some sort of sequence of actions that has a bug somewhere along the way to the db.

This client installed into a forever folder. Based on what others have said, I’m not so sure it is extraneous. It sounds like this is the one that’s going to be patched to go live.

•

u/BearerseekseekIest 50m ago

I mean the stress test downloads to the action forever folder so it will be the live client, any UI / addon changes you do will carry over from the stress test to the main game, so if not for anything its worth loading it up and getting your UI sorted so you dont have to fuck around doing it for a while on launch night.

•

u/Whiteshovel66 44m ago

Its for sure the same realm? I highly doubt that.

•

u/BearerseekseekIest 43m ago

What do you mean realm? I'm saying the stress test was run on the live servers I set my UI up and add-ons and they will now transfer over when the game releases on the 4th, the beta settings won't.

•

u/sphynxzyz 38m ago

Yes it's the actual production (live) server. So it'd make sense the download would be the connection to the server.

•

u/Zerowig 45m ago

The stress test is the live game we’re all going to play on the 4th. Now was the time to get ready and prepare.

•

u/Whiteshovel66 45m ago

Prepare for what

•

u/Lyreks 13m ago

the live game we’re all going to play on the 4th.

•

u/VzDubb 10m ago

wtf are you talking about bro rofl

•

u/eulersheep 0m ago

It's not a separate client, it is the live launch client.

•

u/Karthis_Arkwood 40m ago

I was one among thousands in the Oly group that tried to stress the servers for the test. It felt to me like they did a good job with shards/layers in the leveling zones, with a few issues for some people who were transferred to empty but lagged-out layers. Even with so many of us, things were fine overall as we ran through the zones, but for some reason groups would be kicked off the layer (There's no issue with this when there were so many of us), then randomly be added back a few min later rather than keeping us separated.

The big issues seem to be around Stormwind; with just a few thousand people, it would lag us out and crash the server. I think they need to either improve the servers for the major cities or force us into more layers so this is not an issue on release, as there will likely be far more than a few thousand people in the cities and starting zones.

I wonder if some of the issues with people getting swapped around more often are related to the recent allies feature and guild members being placed in your world more often.

u/Temporary-Fold4851 1h ago

A lot of hype for the game has died down.

•

u/FreeSpeechIsDeadge 1h ago

Lmao the amount of you on this sub hoping that this game fails is just pathetic.

•

u/KenzieWitch 1h ago

Just waiting for the release, no reason to log in for a test personally

•

u/krupta13 38m ago

on the contrary. the hype has increased exponentially every week of the beta.
