I think someone explained it because it lets them have like 1000 layers of Org but 10 layers of Azshara instead of requireng 1000 layers of both.

u/OstrichPaladin 6d ago
Maybe a hot take but I don't care. Let the cities be crowded or let the open world be a little more sparse. Anything but the way layering works now. It's awful

Exactly. For anyone who doesn't understand this... On what will be the most mega of mega servers yet tried, keeping capital cities manageable and playable would need a huge amount of layers. Which would then make each layer out in the world extremely empty. Clearly some sort of solution in between continent level layering and zone level sharding is called for.
19
u/remakeprox 6d ago edited 6d ago
Would something like this be possible?
Look, I'm not a dev. I have 0 clue of how any of this system/server infrastructure works. But I'm thinking if they have this crazy sharding, phasing, layering system in place, then surely something like this shouldn't be impossible?
- 10 Layers, continent/world wide all with a cap of ~4k players (Pulling these numbers out of my ass, but still)
- People aren't forced out of their current layer when crossing zones, or well, ever. They get to choose which layer they're in like RS worlds
- Only capital cities have a sharding system in place to split up the population of 1 layer into more sub-layers, so you're on layer 1: shard 10. Leaving the capital city would put you back in Layer 1, no sublayer/shard, across the entire continent
→ More replies (5)10
u/BestFriend_Sword 6d ago
My understanding is it's not that there are 10 layers in a zone, but that it actively spins up and shuts down additional layers based on players present. So when a massive horde of players travel into a normally low pop zone it needs to create new layers to accommodate. Maybe there's a tech that allows them to normalize the matching up of zone layers, but that seems to be the biggest issue at the moment.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (3)4

How? Normal mega servers had a lot of people in cities and the rest of the players split between all the zones and instances.

Orgrimmar or any other major city is not the problem, this is actually just a really good example. The whole layering thing is way out of control and ruins basic immersion and in some cases, like this good example, can break gameplay. Im certain they can change parameters for layering and make this way more agreeable to the end user, but will they spend time on that? Remains to be seen

I can see this beeing endlessly abused in open pvp once everyone knows where the borders are
167
u/uhnstoppable 6d ago edited 6d ago
It already was. 2 weeks ago at level 20 on beta, I saw dozens of dudes fighting on the Thandol Span between Arathi and Wetlands. When they would get low HP, they would just jump back to the other side.
Last week at level 30, horde were abusing the same function at the Great Lift between 1k Needles and Barrens to safely catch Alliance and Mind control them back across the shard-border and hurl them off the ledge.
110
u/jug6ernaut 6d ago
This is bad but what makes it even worse is that it doesn’t even take abuse. I ran into the one at 1000 needles just playing the game and the other faction kept phasing in and out between zones. It’s incredible this was ever even considered an option.

Yeh i layered mid bridge after dying to them twice. I could see them with tracking up and poof i was gone, it was a bit annoying.
I dont mind getting ganked and trying to take the weakest one out, or the thrill of getting by gank squads.
I know its annoying for others but how do you even team up to have a battle like the old TM/southshore battles if you keep layering.

Now if only game knew if character was in combat and for its duration(plus 1 minute after leaving combat) placed a hidden debuff that prevented ANY layering.

They also said it is a process to fix this. And that they are actively working on it. It is the purpose of the beta, after all.

To be honest, the game is way under-cooked. I can't even imagine the issues we're going to be seeing from levels 30-60, which is COMPLETELTY untested at this point.

I just had an issue with talents that required 15 points in the first two to unlock the third row, but then I could remove some points from one of the talents, but not the other to get me back to the 15. Was super weird.
Resetting talents at trainer fixed it, but yeah, constantly weird stuff going on this close to launch.

This is already well known, but the layering system is way to easy to abuse, and this is without intending to abuse it.
What if the horde attempts a counterattack? The raid just has to walk outside the gates, res/heal/buff up again and then run back in with full hp.
Heres another example that I personally did. I get the notification that I'm going to layer. I have a quest to take out a quest mob that has several adds surrounding it. Instead of just trying to slowly take the out the adds and using crowd control tactically, I just burst down the quest mob and phase into a new layer to get out of combat.
Or, someone gets phased right as they are trying to loot a quest item or a herb/ore. That makes the item completely inaccessible for anyone else in that layer, because the person who was looting it technically hasn't finished looting it. Thus, putting the thing (quest item, mining node, herb node) in a indefinite unlootable state.
The layer system was a good idea, but its design is flawed as it allows for too many ways to break the game in unintended ways.
25
u/Howsetheraven 6d ago
Oh my god, is that why the quest items are completely fucked sometimes? This layering problem is so deep and I don't think they're even going to attempt to change it.

u/hwcrow 6d ago
This is by far the biggest problem with WoWF. Would easily choose to switch to be partitioned into a thousand different servers but have none of this phasing/sharding. This is all antithetical to the entire point of spending time in a shared online world.

u/snukb 6d ago
I think they're just (perhaps rightfully) afraid of having ghost servers once the hype dies down and the population stabilizes down to just the actual long time players. Which is a valid concern. But this isn't the answer.
29
u/imaUPSdriver 6d ago
The answer has already been implemented. Last names. Merge dead servers and majority of players can keep their names
→ More replies (1)12
u/SkeptioningQuestic 6d ago
It's not a majority, it's everyone. The names are region wide cross faction, no one would ever lose their name.

u/bobtheblob6 6d ago
They should just do OSRS style servers, and let you choose what server/population level you want when you log in. Essentially instead of a single mega server, let people choose which persistent world layer they want to play in. They could spin them up or down as active player count rises or falls just like they did for layers
9
3
u/ThreeShotYa 6d ago
It’s easy they can just have worlds with player caps and if you want to join it you need to wait in a Q it would also make questing easier and only allow someone to change worlds at a main city to stop players for
Exploiting it and make spawns for rear materials on a timer and make it game wide→ More replies (2)4
u/esuvii 6d ago
I've long hoped they would do Runescape style servers, where your characters exist region-wide and you just choose which one you login to. That way you could choose a server with your friends on, or a low pop one while you farm herbs, or a high pop one to do world PVP. Let dungeons and AH be region-wide, but open world just be the server you chose on login.

When you go to login, or at anytime while playing, you just select which server you want to hop to. If you're out of combat it will quickly log you out and back in on the other server. Basically, if layering had a drop down menu. Each one has a max capacity of 2000, and certain ones have tags like "Forestry" so you know all the people doing woodcutting will mass on that server. In this scenario, everyone could agree to switch to layer "42 - World PVP" or something.

47
u/ArgentumWulf 6d ago
The issue is not the concept of layers, the issue is that the layers do not appear to be working as intended. This, and several other videos I have seen of the beta, look like sharding, not layering.
Layer = A copy of the whole continent/instance. You will see the same people again and again, because people stay on that layer with you across zones.
Shards = Lots of independent copies of each area. People disappear at area boundaries as they go onto different shards.
What we see in this video clearly is the latter.
15
u/macguini 6d ago
This is an issue in retail too. I've seen mining nodes and other players vanish as I approach them. A few mining nodes disappeared while mining them. This has been a known issue for a few expansion packs...Seems like it's even worse on Forever.

People really out here defending layers like we're not capable of having a single layer in this day and age.
Layers were acceptable back when there really wasn't any other choice but those excuses don't work anymore. Technology and server hosting has come a long way
Edit: All I'm trying to say is players shouldn't be seeing each other phase in and out of existence, especially mid combat. I don't care about the words. Shards, layers , potato, tomato. The technology has come far enough that this shouldn't still be a thing
6
u/wOlfLisK 6d ago
The issue is that layers can only deal with a certain number of players before performance starts to degrade. You could have each layer be done on a continent level basis but then you'll run into issues where the world feels empty because 80% of the layer is taken up by people AFKing in Stormwind and another 10% are bots mining in Westfall. Zone based layers mean that even if 80% of the total population are in Stormwind, the rest of the world isn't spread out over 1000 layers, they're compressed into however many the zone needs. You end up with a much more vibrant world. It also means they can push the number of people in city layers because they know there isn't any combat going on so a bit of extra lag is a decent trade for making the city feel even more active than the rest of the game.
This is definitely an unfortunate side effect that I hope Blizzard comes up with a solution for it but to be honest, if I get a choice between an enemy raid disappearing when it leaves a major city and the world feeling empty, I'm picking the former.

What did they think was going to happen? This is how sharding works the cities are seperate shards because of population concentration.

Exactly. That is the issue here. Nothing about what happens in this video screams Open World MMORPG to me

Was unsure if I should play wow/PoE. But if this isn't resolved before launch, I am playing PoE instead.

Don't worry they're on the case with "incremental" improvements that will "hopefully" get implemented around launch.

Lol AION 2 came out a few days ago, and it does better with more people, allowing you to beat world bosses with over 100 people, now that is an mmo, without using layers btw.

This is the result of always removing every little bit of friction.
Oh people had some friction with server selection? better shard everything on a single big server.
lol

Realms worked.
The real issue is that Blizz don't want to spend the effort or time in merging dead realms when populations do drop.
Same way they don't want to re-hire GMs to handle bots or in-game issues, opting for automation and AI review.

You should have seen the barrens /durotar fight the other day with shobek and xaryu. They would just go to the other side of the river and layer so we couldn't fight then cross the river to come battle again. But when we chased them across the river we swapped to different layers than they did so you'd cross and find nobody there... Then cross back and suddenly there's a war again. the battle was so broken and actually made the experience pretty unenjoyable.

Seems like if you were recently engaged in pvp they could flag your character that states no phasing for 2 minutes. Similar to how eve online flags you after combat for a brief period of time. As a non coder this seems simple to add and solve the issue… go ahead and send me Starbucks for payment

A group of alliance played have just attacked the horde capital, as they leave the boundary of the city gates they're being put into different version of durotar.
This is called phasing, it's something that wow has been doing years to manage high player density zones like cities, or areas where a lot of players will be in the same area at the same time.
There are ways for players to jump between phases, for instance joining a party with a player in a different phase will usually pull you into that phase with them.
For the alliance players here, nothing happened, they just kept running. For the horde players in the city, the alliance phased out of existence, with no way to chase or find them.
I've never actively engaged in phase hopping, so I dont know if the alliance in this video are somehow abusing the system to get away, or is the game's normal phasing is just being hyper aggressive and not working as it should.

When you enter a city, everyone is on the same "layer". You can see and interact with every person on the city layer. When you leave a city, the game will assign a new layer to you and you phase to that layer. Again, you can see and interact with every person on your layer.
The way it's currently coded is jank. Since there is only one mega-server per gameplay style, leaving a city through the front gates in a PvP setting is basically a get out of jail free card; the enemies can't follow you, and any guards you aggroed will simply cease to exist.

This is just painfull to watch. They need to make this a top priority.
