News Chromebook Snapdragon 7c booted into native Android 16

Post image
113 Upvotes

Got Android 16 (LineageOS 23.2) booting on Snapdragon 7c Chromebook hardware. It runs directly via a single boot image that bundles device trees for all 47 manufacturing SKUs and board revisions across the entire Google Trogdor platform, without touching the underlying board firmware.

Because they all share the same baseboard design, the image is structured to support almost the entire Snapdragon 7c and 7c Gen 2 lineup—including devices like the Duet 5, HP x2 11, Acer Spin 513, ASUS CM3, and Galaxy Chromebook Go. Core hardware like touch, audio, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth is already functional.

News I’m Feeling scammed

Bought a Chromebook last year, my first. One of the things that convinced me was, the price and guaranteed updates till 2034, so I wouldn’t be stuck with a device frozen in time.
I was curious about the next OS from google, it’s out, but my Chromebook will not get it. From what I understand, no Chromebook will get it. So google gave the new OS a new name, the chromeOS will get security patches and the new OS will get the updates…… technically it will give upadates to chrome OS until 2034….. but it was not what I was expecting….
Apple devices are pricier, but you get an up to date device for years….
My iPhone 15pro, from 2023, runs the same OS of the latest model. That’s to update for years, not stuck in old OS with security patches.
It’s like that or am I missing something?

News Google's new 'Aluminium OS' project brings Android to PC: Here's what we know

Thumbnail androidauthority.com
158 Upvotes

"Aluminium OS" is the code name for Android Desktop that will merge ChromeOS and Android. Of course it doesn't mean it will be the final name or that the ChromeOS/Chromebook brands will be dropped.

I still think Lacros was a better name: LaCrOS (Linux and Chrome OS). It's short, simple, and reflects what it is: Linux, full Chrome browser, and native Android apps.

News Essential Media Player – A web-based (PWA) local media player

Hello,

I have been working on a new media player for some time. It is a fully web based media player (PWA). It plays local files on your system and does not upload them anywhere.

The link is: https://essentialmediaplayer.com/

Some of its features are:

  • Can play video and audio files
  • Supports mp4, webm and some mkv files for video and supports most of the common formats for audio like mp3, flac, ogg, wav
  • You can install it to your system
  • Once installed, it works fully offline
  • You can assign it as the default app on your OS for the media file types you want. Then you can just double click on a file to open it using EMP
  • Supports creating a basic playlist
  • Can show subtitles (via .srt files or embedded subtitles)
  • Can show lyrics (via .lrc files)
  • Picture-in-picture mode for videos
  • Different playback speeds
  • Settings for customization
  • Keyboard shortcuts
  • Works with the media buttons on your headphones or keyboard
  • Uses GLSL fragment shaders via WebGL for audio visualizations and supports importing custom shaders (API explanation is in the settings if you want to create a custom audio visualization!)

There are plethora of media players out there, I guess what makes this app a bit different is that it is fully web based, so it is cross-platform and you can simply go to https://essentialmediaplayer.com and start playing your local media files. Also if you have restricted access on a computer and not able to install desktop applications, this might be an alternative.

This app only supports the formats/codecs the browser supports. So this app is definitely not a VLC replacement, but still most of the new video/audio files out there should work.

I don't own a Chromebook myself, I was only able to test it on Windows, so I would be very happy if anybody can try this app on a Chromebook and let me know if it works well there, and whether it feels native or not.

I would appreciate if you have any feedbacks.

PS: Last week I tried to communicate with moderators that I am going to post a self-promotion post (because I am the developer of this app) but I didn't receive a reply, so I decided to post anyway, I am hoping that moderators will allow this post.

News Could Android Desktop be the future of ChromeOS?

Post image

Today Google announced “Desktop windowing on Android Tablets”, and immediately came to mind the killing of LaCros and when in June 12 Google announced that “ChromeOS will soon be developed on large portions of the Android stack to bring Google AI, innovations, and features faster to users.” I love ChromeOS, but I would prefer an Android desktop environment with full Chrome browser that supports extensions.

News Checked out the new #Googlebooks the other day...

So from what I understand... These are gonna be placed as the premium tier chromebooks running on Intel.

They're all super lightweight to hold.

So is this gonna replace the existing #Chromebook plus gear out there?

LineageOS is running perfectly on Google Gru Chromebooks now!

It runs directly off of a MicroSD card from the stock bootloader.

Almost all features are tested and working on my Acer Chromebook Tab 10 (Google Scarlet)

What works:

- Booting

- WiFi

- Bluetooth

- GPU acceleration

- Touchscreen and WACOM stylus

- Hardware decoder and encoder

- Camera (including video recording)

- Internal speakers and headphone jack

- USB audio

- DisplayPort Alt mode / Android desktop mode

- 9-volt PD fast charging

- Suspend to RAM

What doesn't work (yet):

- USB MTP and wired adb. Wireless adb works though.

Notice: Samsung Chromebook Plus (Google Kevin) and Asus Chromebook Flip C101 (Google Bob) are yet to be tested. All other Google Gru devices are guaranteed to run this build.

Some time in the last 24 hours Google updated their "Auto Update Expiration" policy. All new ChromeOS device models now have 10 years of supported updates, and many existing models had their AUE dates extended by 2 or 3 years.

Policy

  • ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of updates.
  • With every update, your laptop becomes more secure. These improvements automatically help make your Chromebook useful even longer by providing enhanced security and stability for 10 years from the platform release date.

You can check the new date for your device on the live webpage:

Or compare it to the previous date here:

News Idea for chromebooks

yk how consoles like Xbox and PS5 have split screen?

What if Chromebooks had that but for different accounts?

Like you could have your personal account on one side and your school or work account on the other.

Both would be completely separate, meaning neither account could access the other's stuff.

School and work restrictions would still apply to their side.

You could even use two personal accounts if you wanted.

it could require more ram then a normal chromebook so 2 or 4 gibs would probly be horrible

And I'm not saying the windows feature where its just two Chrome windows open, I mean two actual ChromeOS accounts running side by side.
