i’m agoraphobic so have been unable to see a dentist in years and will not be able to.
it hurts 247 and has been getting worse recently :,(
apologies for bad pics.
thanks in advance

forgot to mention , i was late getting my teeth in and therefore have been late getting my permanent ones , this is not a permanent one.

question Is my floss supposed to be catching on my fillings?

Dentist told me to just pull the floss through, but I'm like, SHREDDING my floss. Shouldn't he like... smooth it down or something? :/ Or is this just my new normal...?

question New Dentist Claims I have 8 Cavities, do I?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Primary Complaint/Ask: My new dentist claims I have 8 cavities, focused on the areas in between my wisdom teeth (of which I have 4, all grown in fully) and their neighbor teeth. I'm not surprised to hear I have some, as I don't floss (and will now do so going forward) but I was shocked to hear that I have that many. I figured it wouldn't hurt to seek a second opinion, but I fully accept I may have that many.

Drink: Yes

Smoke/Drugs: No

Other Dental Issues: I have had a filling done on one of my molars/wisdom teeth previously.

Attachments: I've attached my bitewing x-rays that I received recently, as well as the pre-treatment processed by my insurance showing 8 line items. I apologize if this is not enough to go off of, I asked for my xrays and this is what they sent me.

question I’m not sure but I think I just lost a filling

I was just eating pizza and there was a particular crunch in 2 of my bites that felt weird when eating the crust. It felt like too hard to be crust. I went and looked in my mouth and I wasn’t sure if this back left tooth looked weird. I’ve had fillings before in my life and you can kind of see the ones that are clearly filled. But it’s been years and I have no idea what got fillings. But I did think it was weird that my other back teeth look smooth and filled and this one doesn’t.

It’s not in pain.

I don’t have dental insurance and I already waisted 100 on exam recently when I thought I had a cavity but was told I don’t. So before I pay another for exam I want to make sure I’m not just making stuff up in my head.

I do not smoke. I drink 0-2 drinks a week. I have no medical conditions.

question Question dentist is referring me to oral surgeon. Want thoughts

Hi! I got my X-rays done today it’s been a year. I should be going every 6 months as I have lupus, sjogrens, and fibromyalgia. (Collecting these stupid autoimmune diseases apparently-_-) anywho she noticed something and didn’t have my old xray to see the difference. I found my 2025 xray when I got home and will send it to them tomorrow but here are the pics. I circled in blue the area she pointed to … the top pic is 2025 and bottom is today. Second pic is without me circling it. What are some thoughts on what it can be? I’m not asking for a diagnosis but just narrowing it down to what’s most likely. TIA 😊

question Decay left under my new filling?

Post image
• Upvotes

Just had a filling (and immediate XR afterwards on tooth 13. It looks like there may be some decay still present on the XR. OF NOTE, HE DID PUT A LINER IN OF SOME SORT

Is that leftover decay in you opinion? Did he play it too safe trying to avoid the nerve and not drill deep enough?

What do I do from here (ask him to re-do it at my routine 6 month cleaning? go back ASAP?)

Thank you in advance.

question Is this how temporary crowns actually look like?

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hello guys,

I went to my dentist the other day and after years of contemplating whether to get my crowns or not, I finally got it started yesterday. The dentist told me the temp will be exactly like my teeth. once I looked into the mirror, it looked NOTING like my own teeth! I told her I work, attend class, and do other side activities, but I feel like she didn't care and wanted to move on with other patients. Is this really how temp crowns look like? I got my central and lateral incisors done and I am getting emax. I am literally crying right now!

question do I actually need a root canal?

Hi! I have a weird timeline to explain but i’m curious if I actually need a root canal or not.

Back in September I got a cavity filled on tooth #2, I wasn’t told this at the time but it was very close to the root.

About 2 weeks later I was still in a good amount of discomfort so I reached out and they scheduled a follow up.

By the time the follow up rolled around I was in a lot of pain so they prescribed me antibiotics and said to come back in 2 weeks to re assess.

Two weeks later and i’m still in a lot of pain, and the doctor said “I was hoping the pain would go away so we wouldn’t have to do a root canal”, so that day we schedule a root canal. For more context my insurance doesn’t cover them so it would be $2000 for this procedure.

A few days after this appointment I noticed the pain went away, I gave it 2 weeks to check and I had 0 pain during this time. With my appointment coming up on Monday I called today to see if I actually needed the procedure and the front desk said yes and I was like well can you ask because the doctor made it sound like had I been pain free at my last check up I wouldn’t need it, she checked and let me know he wanted to proceed with the root canal.

Do I actually need to spend $2000 right now or can I wait? He made the comment about not needing it before he knew my insurance didn’t cover it so idk if he just wants money or not.

Thank you!

question Root Canal problem

Thumbnail

So I got a root canal in late June. Everything was good then couple days ago my root canal tooth started throbbing intense pain (I couldn’t even sleep) so I went to the dentist today and they told me that the root canal went good and it was on my body’s side that didn’t heal. Also told me its root canal treatment is uncommon but it does happen more than you think and that I shouldn’t have any throbbing pain. I can’t read an X-ray but is this really my fault or is it their fault.

Now they’re sending me to a specialist, how come I didn’t get referred to one from the get go to get it done? Now I’m going to have to pay to get another treatment they said.

I’m just upset cause I already have 1 dental insurance maxed out and it doesn’t reset till Jan. While my other one got refreshed in July. Idk anything on the dental side but should I get reimbursed or something for it failing. Or am I just that unlucky.

Any feedback would be much appreciated thank you :)

question Toothache but dentist says all ok?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all

I’ve been having some intermittent tooth pain on the lower right side of my mouth since Monday. I’ve been treating it with panadol but the pain has been sharp/ intense enough when it comes that I went to the dentist on Tuesday. They took the below X-ray, did some cold/ tapping tests and said that my teeth were largely responding the way they should be (but I had taken a panadol about 2 hours before the appt, so they said that might have been numbing the pain a bit). They said the pain could have been from a wisdom tooth, but I feel like the pain has been pretty different to wisdom teeth discomfort. The pain has persisted on/off this week, but yesterday I noticed some increased sensitivity to hot water/ drinks.

Hoping for a second opinion please - thank you!

question Do wisdom teeth coming in cause canker sores?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I’ve always been super prone to canker sores and this one is keeping me up tonight😭😭

All I can do is think abt how sore my entire mouth feels! I’m not sure if my wisdom teeth need removed, but it looks like they do to me.

Any suggestions for the pain? And could the wisdom teeth be causing these clusters of canker sores I get? I don’t have insurance atm so it may be a while before I get to see a dentist. Thanks for any help!!:)

Edit:
I smoke and drink occasionally but not a ton, and I’m fighting off a virus as well.

question What's going on with my lip? 8 hours after dental fillings

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

F23 USA non smoker/drinker, diagnosed sjogrens disease via minor salivary gland biopsy 4 months ago. take hydroxychloroquine, pilocarpine, atenolol, phentermine, mirena IUD.

Had my front bottom teeth worked on today, i believe at least 1 filling in each tooth. I don't know how many numbing shots i got, but it was a lot.

Anyway- noticed 2 bumps 3 hours after, and now all of these 8 hours after. It hurts but not horribly. Took tylenol. Larger bumps in one area than the rest (pic 3) but was unable to get a great photo. Do i need to call the dentist tomorrow about this, or is it something that'll just go away?

I also am not sure why my gums look black & white around the teeth unless it's just from trauma from the fillings?

question Implant / crown fell off (*´-`) Now how is this fix ?

Thumbnail

Suddenly, the crown came off.

1- Is it the abutment that broke ?
2- Will they be able to fix that without making a new crown?
3- If yes, how is the process?
I just got this crown two years ago, prior to that when I had another one for 10+ years.
Also, my prior implant/crown the middle was more shiny and nicer.
4- What is this material they used?
5- I also see a tiny cavity near the root / gums at the last molar 🦷 . Am I right ?

I appreciate the time

experience/story How often do dental issues happen due to pregnancy?

• Upvotes

I have always had pretty bad dental anxiety when it comes to my teeth and especially when I'm pregnant. I do my 2 cleanings per year/ brush 2x per day and floss almost daily. Went to dentist a few months ago and they said all looks good. However, my dental anxiety I believe stems from my mom as she reminds me a lot that her fourth pregnancy resulted in dentures at age 42. Apparently back in 1999 when she was pregnant she had an infection in her tooth that spread all over and no dentist would touch her because she was pregnant. The story never checked out to me and recently I asked her how often she went to the dentist and she admitted she hasn't went since she was a pre-teen so I take it she had pretty bad underlying dental issues prior to pregnancy? She also said she had teeth crumble in her mouth even with her first pregnancy in her early 20's due to lack of calcium.

I've had 2 babies and thankfully no issues other than pregnancy gingivitis while pregnant but I'm really just wondering if your in the dental field, is this common or super uncommon for pregnant women to lose teeth simply from pregnancy impacts? We are looking to have baby #3 and honestly I'm just so scared about potential tooth loss. If this is common, is there any preventative measures other than regular checkups?

question Legitimate place that can reseat a fixed upper arch placed by…Aspen Dental!!! It popped out TWICE.

• Upvotes

41 yo female, and I had 6 implants placed in Oct. 2024 at Aspen Dental. The dentist who did everything was AMAZING, and he’s the only reason I went there for them. They were exposed in March 2025, and the fixed denture was placed in May 2025.
$20,000 for all of it.

Fast forward to January of this year, and it’s loose. The warranty states you have to receive an annual maintenance cleaning by then for the guarantee to remain valid, so I called and asked if we could get this done early, and if it could be checked out due to it wobbling.

Front desk told me I had a ‘balance’ and they’d offer me a discount. The thing is, the entire procedure was paid via the same exact credit card, and all receipts were available to remind them of this. NO insurance was supposed to be used, NONE. We made this very clear. I spoke to a billing specialist who told me it was an office write off, and I was not responsible. I was still unable to get an appointment scheduled, however, because every time I called…this balance kept coming up. The front desk would block me from making an appointment every time.

In late March, it popped out of my mouth entirely. I frantically began calling the office again, and got the same result. I went there, same result. I called corporate billing and they told me it was an ‘erroneous accounting software glitch’ that would be rectified quickly. Not so. I guess they just never fixed it or it never cleared, because I couldn’t get an appointment to save my life. In July, I located the dentist who did everything for me (he had moved to his own practice) and he was able to call the owner of the Aspen, and then the practice manager called and had me go in to have it reseated.

The dentist who reseated it left the old O-rings in it that were over a year old, and told me they were reusable. It popped out again five weeks later at the end of August.

Rinse, repeat…I called for an appointment, I had another magical balance that someone pulled out of thin air, and the front desk just started to click me to voicemail mid-call and ignore me. I found an old appointment survey link in my text messages, so I wrote a Google review about all of this. The practice manager called the next day.

She told me that the owner said he’d forgive my balance, one that I do not legitimately owe, in exchange for my deleting my bad review so I don’t scare other patients. In order to have it reseated, they are requiring the maintenance cleaning. They offered to ‘discount’ this for me by forgiving the O Ring cost, so they will only charge me $250 for the cleaning and having it put back in.

That said, I’m wondering if anywhere else in the Raleigh, NC area can work on this type of fixed arch? I called a few places local to me, and they mentioned they don’t use the locator fixed system that Aspen uses. I am absolutely desperate to find literally anywhere else that can help me, because I do NOT trust Aspen AT ALL.

Out of the seventeen months since I had the original arch placed, it has been entirely out of my mouth, implants and all just exposed, for six months altogether. They blocked me for months making an emergency appointment, constantly produce fake balances, and then leave warped, old retention rings in when they are single use parts only. Then they try to extort me into deleting my review in exchange for forgiving some balance that’s not even legitimate.

I just want my teeth back in, and I just want to form a long-term, trusted relationship with whomever can do it. My husband is so beyond sick, needs a kidney transplant, and I’m so exhausted with life, our kids, and stress. Dealing with this corporate evil has absolutely drained the rest of dignity I had left. I just want to find someone I can rely on. Thanks for reading if you made it this far.

question Need advice after I couldn’t get numb for extraction.

Post image
• Upvotes

Anyone who isn’t a verified dentist comment on the MOD comment. I’d like to hear all the advice/experiences. I’ve noticed that they get deleted unless you are verified.

27m that uses Zyn pouches. Haven’t been to dentist in a couple of years. High anxiety of dentist (Childhood trauma) and high blood pressure 155/105. (They told me to go to dr about my blood pressure)

Went in for extraction of #19. It was hurting (throbbing and when food is trapped) then it kinda stopped hurting as much and got REALLY tender and itchy feeling. After google horror stories and fear of sepsis I decided to go in and have it checked out. (Even though I have an appointment at new dentist next week)

The smaller one in front of it is in poor shape but said I can go in for a root canal.

I went to the emergency clinic at the dental school near me. I had tooth pain that turned into tenderness and an itchy feeling. I knew it had to be pulled but didn’t know how painful it would be. Last tooth I had pulled they couldn’t get it numb but I don’t think it was infected as bad as this one.

They did the usual shots all around and I started to feel numbish. So they did another round and on the last one they hit a spot THAT HURT SO BAD. Then they tried to pull and it started to hurt really bad.

Another round of shots on both sides. Tried to pull again and same thing. (More pain than pressure.) So the teacher came in. He did a shot in the bone with a stronger/bigger needle. (It didn’t hurt but the crack startled me.) Tried to pull it again and same thing just about screamed bloody murder.

So the Teacher/staff decided to drill a hole in the tooth and get a shot closer to the nerve. It didn’t hurt but was uncomfortable at low speeds. Did the shot and tried to pull it again. It hurt more after this time when they tried to pull it.

They were about to drill the top of it and try that but I couldn’t take it no more. Even with all the shots they gave me the pain wouldn’t go away after the last attempt to pull. They were about to drop the top and go in that way but I couldn’t take the pain anymore.

They started to stitch it up and started to hurt again and they gave me a couple more shots so it wouldn’t hurt. They had some trouble stitching it and had to do it backwards?

I don’t blame the students and I told them they did a great job. (If anyone is to blame it’s me for not taking care of my teeth.) They were nice, professional and didn’t get upset with me about the pain. They did give me a prescription for antibiotics for the infection.

When I had my other tooth pulled it didn’t get numb but this one is in worse shape. My dad said he kinda has the same problem and he has a crossover nerve?

They said I can make an appointment to get iv sedated. They told me to wait for a couple of days and then make appt so stitches can heal.

I know it’s going to be expensive but I couldn’t stand the pain of them trying to pull it. I believe I have a decently high pain tolerance.

Should I cancel my dentist appointment at my new dentist and let stitches heal?

How soon do I need to go in to be sedated and have it pulled?

Can I go to my regular doctor to see about getting pain relief pills? (I’ve been taking ibuprofen but it’s not helping much after this.)

I have no insurance and they gave me a prescription of amoxicillin. Should I wait until I take all of them and see if it helps the infection?

experience/story Do general dentists care about small cavities getting taken care of before jaw surgery?

• Upvotes

I understand this is a nuanced question because a lot of treatment plans can already be different between each dentist.
Does having a jaw surgery make it so smaller cavities are at risk for growth post operation? I had a dentist want to do 4 small cavities before my jaw surgery and then another dentist said no, I can wait until I’m ready to get my surgery and then they can give me the okay. First dentist recommends I need to get them done explicitly before my surgery then one dentist didn’t agree and doesn’t want to do them at all.
I’m just wondering if recommending to do fillings before a jaw surgery is a regular thing? I guess I’m just confused, why did the first dentist care so much about getting my cavities done before my jaw surgery. I understand that I can’t clean my teeth in certain ways post operation which is nasty I admit I never thought much about that. But if a dentist doesn’t care to do the cavities why does dentist one want to do them so badly because of my jaw surgery?

question 15yo baby premolar broke- no adult tooth

Post image
• Upvotes

My 15yo son is missing 2 adult pre molars on top and bottom. He still has his baby ones. We were hoping he would keep them for a while because he has lost his baby teeth very slowly.

Anyways- on of them kind of half fell out today. The lice that fell out is hollow and you can’t see much left but pieces. Idk how they would even remove that? Is it somewhat normal for that to happen without an adult tooth pushing it out?

We can’t make it to the dentist until Friday which will be about 36 hours. He is not in pain at all. Do I need to change our plans and cancel everything tomorrow to get him in earlier?

Not the best photo bc he’s 15. Thanks!!

question Dentist recommended crowns for four front teeth, should I be nervous?

Hi, I’m 26 and I’ve wanted to get composite bonding or veneers on my teeth for a long time, specifically my four front teeth.

My dentist recommended crowns for my laterals and front teeth and said we can fix the gaps I have there with them. He explained that my bite or something was why this would be best.

He has good reviews and everything and the practice seems very trustworthy, but I’m scared about getting my teeth shaved down. I’ve also seen people say under no circumstances should you get a crown on healthy teeth?

Does anyone have advice on this? I want to fix my smile so badly but I’m scared at the prospect of getting my teeth shaved down if there’s issues with it?

question Brushing with a bad toothbrush for a month—damage??

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

More than a year ago I went to get my yearly cleaning and was told I have mild gingivitis and to brush a little harder. I didn’t really follow this and just continued my usual routine aka gentle toothbrush. Then I had to replace my toothbrush around May of this year and started a new one but the bristles were not as soft and made brushing so painful. I was using this toothbrush for about one month. Every single time I went to brush my teeth, my gums would feel terrible but there was never blood when rinsing.

It was in June when I couldn’t take it anymore and bought a “very soft” toothbrush. From June til now, I have been using my new toothbrush and the pain essentially went away.

However now for the past few months or so I have really really sensitive teeth. I can’t rinse in cold tap water, everything has to be lukewarm. When I am brushing, there is one spot by my upper gum that is a little more sensitive than the others but overall just super sensitive teeth with cold anything. I went to the dentist for my cleaning recently and the hygienist told me I had minor gum recession but the dentists didn’t say anything  and that my gums look good.

I am wondering if this is permanent and if spending a whole month using a very bad toothbrush caused exposed dentin and progression of gum recession? Can it happen that fast?? Was it reassuring that it went away…

I try using sensitive toothpaste and it doesn’t make a big difference.

thank you for reading

question Weird symptoms

Hi. I’m getting sudden sensitivity in my back molars. It’s not painful but it’s a sensation where it’s always there. One time it’s more noticeable on one side but tends to switch.
I’ve also got a sore throat that came later but I think it’s unrelated.

Wondering what it could be, no pain or anything . Worried about it being something bad
