Enjoy the meme, lol! Tis handmade ✨️
Hey everyone! We want to thank everyone who's participated in our community this past month for the engaging posts, thoughtful answers, and (overall) incredibly respectful conduct. It's been nice to watch the community come together so helpfully for so many people! That said, there have been a few incidents that have drawn some attention, and we wanted to go over a few things and hear input from you all.
For starters, we've had many people reaching out to our team about promoting their fishkeeping apps or websites. While we understand that you're trying to reach out to a community that will use them, we cannot endorse apps or websites on this subreddit when they are self promoted. There are a number of safety issues in doing so, and being a part of an app store does not eliminate those risks. In addition, we have to take into account that AI bots pull massive amounts of information from reddit. When it does, it may list our subreddit as a source for your application's information, which is an obvious issue as we have no way of vetting an entire app/website for it's accuracy. That could end up misleading people who trust us as a source.
A community is built on mutual respect, both of your peers and between authority figures. Reporting an automod comment is disrespectful, and downright unhelpful. If you believe an action was taken unfairly or accidentally, please message us with a link to the message and ask us why we took the action! We are more than happy to explain the reasoning behind every action we take and admit when we are wrong.
Being disrespectful towards a poster's pets, situation, and age is also becoming an increasing problem. We've also seen advice being given on legal matters and personal health. This is an aquarium subreddit. We will remove any and all comments pertaining to subjects not in that realm of knowledge. We will remove any unproductive or hateful comments. WE WILL REMOVE ANY COMMENTS THAT ARE HARRASSING MINORS. This includes but is not limited to telling them they are abusers for being unable to correct a bad situation, repeatedly suggesting options they are not financially capable of, or suggesting they start fights with parents or guardians.
Lastly we want to remind people of the goal of this community- for aquarists young and old, new and experienced, of nanos to monsters, to come together and share knowledge, fun moments, show off, or help each other. You've been so fantastic at this! As a mod team we want to help you feel comfortable and safe enough to share these things. We pose a question to you, if you want to answer- what are you looking for in this community? Knowing your goals can help us align the subreddit with them and grow even more.
Swim safe out there folks!

After a lot of work behind the scenes, we’ve finally enabled the r/aquarium wiki!
It’s definitely still a work in progress, so don’t be surprised if you click on a link and it doesn’t go anywhere yet. Some of the pages listed on the index are planned but haven’t been published yet. The pages that are currently published are available to view and use.
We’ll be continuing to add pages and expand the wiki over time, with the goal of creating a helpful resource for both new and experienced fishkeepers.
And this is where we’d really appreciate some community input!
If you read through any of the published pages and:
- Disagree with something
- Think something needs more explanation
- Notice something we should correct
- Think we’re missing important information
- Have a topic you think should be added
Please let us know here in the comments! We want the wiki to be useful to the community, and feedback from other fishkeepers is a big part of making that happen.
You can check out the Wiki here.
There’s still plenty left to build, but we’re excited to finally have it available!

Hi, first time posting. I have a 126L freshwater tank with yellow and black mollies mostly. My yellow male molly has suddenly shrunk, or lost some weight in belly and breathing organs (forgot what they are called in English) are kind of dripping down a little?
He eats normally and is as active as usually. Haven't rellay noticed any fighting with others or anything like that. Test are normal (ammonia, NO2, NO3). Feeding usual doses, that means as much as they can eat within 15-20 second everyday, beside Monday (so 6 days a week). Should I be worried?
Attaching a video that shows the male molly and other yellow mollies. He used to look like others, more round and puffy and also had a visible belly, now he doesn't. The one I am writing about is with one black eye. Any advice is appreciated
EDIT: Forgot to add some info. The tank has been cycled for a year, the temperature is around 28C. I change water every week 15-20%.

I just started cycling this 15 gallon planted fluval flex. What livestock would be recommended to add? Currently, I am considering:
- A betta
- 6-8 Rasbora or tetra
- A couple nerite snails
- Amano shrimp
I want a lively tank but know some bettas tend to be aggressive. Looking for any thoughts or recommendations!

Excuse all the debris. Its been a goldfish tank for years, but the goldfish are outside now in a 300 gallon and moving decor and replanting everything stirred up a lot of gunk im doing 20% water changes daily to clear it up

In the event anyone was wondering about Hewbie.🐡☺️ He is my porcupine pufferfish who I posted a few months back who got sick and went to the vet and was treated for an internal infection. He is eating and his energy is up which are both good things. But…he is still skinny which is super unhealthy for his size. I have over the past few months since the beginning of August tried to fatten him up. Feeding him multiple times a day did not seem to help appease his appetite and led to a decline in water quality. And if I overfed him he just sulks in the corner in a food coma and gets super unhappy. Like when you are stuff on Thanksgiving Day.😂 The vet really wants me to weigh him once a day for a week. I have not done this…yet because I think it would be too stressful for him to take him out of his tank daily especially being a pufferfish. I am still on the fence about whether or not if or when I do this because it would be a better comparison rather than me just looking at him and comparing photos. That being said…I am doing an experimental test of probiotics meant for fish. It is my opinion/evidence supported in aquacultured fishies that prolonged sickness and antibiotic treatment can lead to malnutrition/malabsorption. And it could have killed the good bacteria in his gut similar to what happens with humans. Even though it cured or seemed to have cured/fixed the issue that caused him to go upside down which I/his vet team will never know the exact cause. My biggest fear is he is actively dying or in a deficit or has some other unknown disease or factor then all of this would be for nothing and he could just end up dying anyway. I hope not! He is a fairly young puffer only guesstimated to be around 6ish…3 and a half of which I have had him for the rest of his time was in the big blue sea. My plan is to continue to use these probiotics it has only been a few days. I also will be sending his water out for sequencing to get a better idea of the microbiome and what is living in it as a whole. A better picture than what an ICP-OES or standard aquarium testing can reveal which was insignificant. I may send his DNA sample out too simply for my own curiosity. Thank you for all those who are invested in and adore this fish. He truly is the best! I will update if/when I remember to.🐡❤️

I have an established aquarium, 10+ years, 55 gallon. Water change every 7 to 10 days, heavily planted.
My fish keep dying one by one. They will show a drooping tail, clamped/frayed fins, the droop tail will get more severe with time and then they die. Everyone will seem fine and then 2 weeks later, another one will go.
I have tried UV light in the tank and kanaplex / paracleanse medicated food.
My parameters are
Ammonia/ nitrate: 0
Gh 8
Kh 1-2
Ph 8
I don't know how to raise kh without raising ph further (its naturally low from tap).
I have only seen my nano fish affected. My 12 year old tiger barb and 2 year old honey gourami have never shown signs of illness. Species that seem affected are pygmy cory, red neon blue eyes rainbows, emerald rasboras. (No its not the tiger barb he is elderly, blind, and only goes around the tank when I spot feed him)
Shrimp seem fine.
I get my dish from Dan's fish.
In the video is a juvinile red neon blue eyed rainbow. Water is dirty because I caught the fish mid water change and put it into a breeder box for quick quarantine.

I recently got into making custom hardscapes for aquariums. I did a few weeks worth of research and settled on an idea. I used Hydraulic Cement, over styrofoam. Basically I covered the inside of the back and sides with styrofoam cut to size, and cut 45 degree angles on all the edges. I covered the styrofoam with basic grey hydraulic cement, painted it with acrylic paint (brown, light brown, dark green) and then put two coats of Pond Shield clear epoxy over it……. My overall idea was to try to make it look as if it were a hollowed out log and you’re getting a side view into it, then it changed when I found a resin tree stump that stood about 2” above the rim. Idea is to isolate the top 4” of the stump and have a Bonsai planted up top. My only self realized error was using grape vine sticks as tree roots, had to put 4 coats of pond shield on those because they’re absorbent as all hell.
Now to my reason for the post…. I’ve seen people using Expanding Foam in Terrariums. I like the ease of set up. Spread some spray glue so the foam can stick to it, then just set your wood out and foam around it…. Then press dirt, peet moss, and coconut fibers into the foam to create a nice surface……..
Is there an aquarium safe expanding foam that I can use in this same manor? The expanding foam seems lightyears easier than the method I used with cement and pond shield

So I bought this 70 gallon from a lady on Facebook marketplace this week. I inspected it at pickup, and besides some calcium buildup and small scratches on the glass, I didn't notice any cracks, seal issues, or anything that can jeopardize the structural integrity of the aquarium. Even came with a nice stand that I sanded and painted. I get the aquarium home, and clean it thoroughly. I inspect it again, still don't notice anything. Today, I put the sand in and began to fill the aquarium. As soon as the tank reaches its maximum capacity, I began hearing a cracking sound. Next, the plastic brace in the middle snaps, and the whole front pane of the aquarium visibly bows outwards. I'm not going to lie, I took a deep breath as soon as this happened, looked at my girlfriend, closed my eyes and tried not to sh*t my pants. I felt like I was in that scene in Titanic when the captain is going down with his ship and watching the water slowly crack the windows, with a sense of unavoidable impending doom. Anyway, I take another deep breath, I tell my girlfriend don't move a fricking muscle, and I begin carefully siphoning the water out of the tank bucket by bucket. I don't know how, but I managed to drain the entire tank without it completely exploding. I know these things are meant to hold, but I am absolutely shocked at the fact that I, with my own eyes, watched the front panel of that glass bow outwards about a half inch. Moral of the story, always triple inspect used tanks, even new ones. There was a crack hidden under the plastic frame that would have taken some generous maneuvering to discover.
(No, we don't rent, we own.)

They have looked like this for a few weeks and seem happy enough, still eat, arent popping to the top, haven’t lost a cardinal or cory since a couple didn’t make the first week but is there anything wrong with the corys that I’m missing? Local fish store doesn’t know, fully cycled but tank is new in the last year, been slowly adding more plants and fish, water parameters are 0,0,aim for 15-30 for the plants. I have 3 red cory’s but am almost done quarantining 5 more that aren’t red so would like to address the issue (if there is one) first. Advice is always welcome on the algae or anything else as well.

I have a 20 gal long, stable for nearly two years. 0 ammonia 0 nitrite trace nitrate, fairly heavily planted. Temp is always 72 to 75.
I have a school of 6 neon green rasboras, 4 peppered Cory’s, about a dozen neo shrimp, random ramshorn snails, and 6 CPDs.
Earlier this week I noticed one of the CPDs looks unwell. He’s obv thinner and now it looks like his spine is dipping. He swims in a see saw motion, with his head and tail moving up and down as he moves. He’s also gaping his mouth open as he swims. I tried to take some pics and it might even look like his gills are red but I can’t tell for sure.
About a month ago I lost a Cory and a rasbora but not sure how are why.
I should probably set up a hospital tank for this dude, but wondering what could be the issue?

I have had my aquarium for over a year. I often had to change my plants, because they often died or some other problems I guess? When I bought my aquarium (and related items) I got instructions on how I should care for my tank.
Change the water every 2 weeks. 1ml of fertiliser daily etc.
(my tank is around 25-30L I‘d say).
Before I had a lot of problems with algae, but when I decided to no longer stick to the instructions I got (I started changing the water every week) I started to see less algae and my plants grew a tad more. But I still have problems with my plants getting brown at the end and kind of decomposing (becoming seetrough or just simply falling off).
I still haven’t mentioned what animals I keep.
4 Amano shrimps and two snails.
When I bought plants (3 weeks ago) I asked the person working at the aquatic store and she was kind of clueless I guess? She said something about my light maybe not being right.
I don’t want to keep buying new plants and stressing my shrimps. So I‘m coming to this community asking for help.
What could be the problem? Should I buy a new lamp? Something else? And if there are any recommendations it would be great for any specific items to buy.
Thank you for your help

I have a 64-liter tank with several guppies and mollies. About a week ago, I realized my sponge filter was running at its lowest setting, so I turned it up to the highest. I’ve just noticed that when some of my fish touch the top of the filter they suddenly dart away or jerk. I’ve attached a video to show what I mean. The strange thing is that they keep coming back to the filter and doing it again. I put my finger in the water and didn’t feel anything strange. I also unplugged the filter and touched it, but didn’t notice anything unusual (I know this doesn't necessarily rule out an electrical issue). Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this simply be the increased water flow, or could there be something wrong with the filter? Any advice would be appreciated.

I want to get a 100 gallon tank. I’m just worried the floor might dip or even break. It’d weigh about 1500 pounds (I think, maybe less). Now, I went to the basement to see which direction the wooden support beams are going, and the tank would be perpendicular to the beams which means there would be multiple support beams under the tank (about 5?). The tank would also be by an outside wall. I just want to see if anyone has ever had any trouble with their floor, or if they have done anything to prevent damage.
EDIT: Perpendicular

It’s not fully finished yet. Just added the crypt parvas patch to the right. I plan to add two more sections of plants. The filter is tilted for a little more oxygen temporarily.

Looking at this Tank/Stand combo on Marketplace. A little concerned about the stand though, for a 29 gal, that's 220 lbs just on water let alone hard scape and substrate.
Am I overthinking it, or would this setup be a spill waiting to happen?
Thanks in advance

I posted last night in a different sub as it was also making a buzzing noise, which has stopped: https://www.reddit.com/r/Aquariums/s/ZvU3YwmDyd
I have a Fluval AC50 filter. I’ve had the tank almost a year and it started making this whooshing noise about a week ago (and was buzzing, but just last night). I think it’s the filter but have no idea. I had my dad listen to it and he said it just needed to be cleaned, but I rinsed the filter components yesterday as the flow was too slow and the noise persists.
The only other things I have in the tank are a heater, air stone (set to low), and a thermometer that will stop the heater if it gets too high.
Any ideas? The fish are fine, but the tank used to be super quiet so it’s just bugging me.
