Discussion 🗣️ this sub has gotten compromised by fanatics and ideologues.

This sub used to leave more space for nuance in the beginning but now it has become an ideology. Everything slightly critical of the status quo here is met with an immediate visceral reaction instead of reason.
Yes, I'd rather live in a world with less AI being shoved down my ass, yes, AI art is incredibly lame and unmeaningful and yes, excessive use and training of AI can lead to environmental damages (yet most of you still aren't vegan, which would do way more for the environment) or dangerous wars.
BUT there is nuance. NUANCE to all of this and its not some black and white shit like all of it is bad.
AI has genuine use-cases like in medical fields, research, or mathematics.
Hate me for it but it isn't all bad. I am extremely critical of AI in many fields including arts, journalism, and politics but if every positive thing you say is met with defiance, then that means that you've lost your objectivity.
That's all I wanted to say, goodbye.

Discussion 🗣️ Human slop vs ai slop

There is a viable difference between human slop and ai slop. It's the fact that human slop is fundamentally part of the learning process. AI slop literally enables bypassing this fundamental concept. Meaning it is harder to produce and share human slop than it is to produce and share AI slop. I'm starting to think even the term slop gives AI to much credit.

Discussion 🗣️ Just got accused of being an ai bot and it's a bit traumatic

I recently made a post in a different subreddit about my personal experience in an abusive relationship. The title was a bit dramatic and I guess it appeared "clickbaity" but it was still 100% true. I just wanted to draw people in.

I didn't use AI at all, but perhaps the way that I write can sometimes resemble AI... I definitely use "--" occasionally, but I have always loved using the em dash when writing.

Anyways, I got so many reports of being an AI BOT and ultimately my post got removed.

I feel so upset. When I asked commenters why they thought I was AI their answer was "I'm not training a bot."

That felt dismissive and dehumanizing. Like, I have to deal with racism in real life, and now when I escape online I'm being accused of not being a real person here as well.

Discussion 🗣️ Why are you anti-ai?

Hey reddit, I'm doing a little study for my school project.

It involves Ai and I want to gather feedback from people who seems to have experience.

I'm staying neutral, just want to gather opinions.

So, why are you anti-ai?

Discussion 🗣️ I can understand and agree with most of the points against AI but do you think there is any use of AI that is justified?

For example, do you think it's OK to use AI for coding? If not why not? I don't mean an AI slop site written in a few minutes or hours or something like that, where not much thought went into creating it. I mean a project where a dev spends hours every day for years but uses AI for continence and lack of resources. A solo dev nowadays can be as productive as a whole company in 2020. Do you think this is a moral/acceptable use of AI or not?

And it's interesting to hear the arguments too. I mean why exactly do we have problems with AI? Is it because the effort is entirely taken out of the equation? In the example case above the effort is still there but the progress and speed is augmented so does that make it ok?

Discussion 🗣️ When can we use ai???

I am all for not using AI. I hate seeing ai generated poster, videos, images and all.

But sometimes, as a student, AI does help me find errors in code and all

So I wanna know like when it's okay to use AI. I know generating images and writing essays using AI is bad, but when is it okay????

Discussion 🗣️ Why can some people feel AI but not know why?

This has happened to me a lot and I've seen a lot of people have this too but the older gens around me don't have it for some reason? AI was created when we both were around and we are the same species so idk

I can tell something is AI almost instantly (talking about blatant AI fliers, "content creators", crochet patterns...) But my mother for example sees the most AI thing EVER and always asks me about it?

Like, they are the ones that told me to never believe in anything on the internet (not even factual, reliable sources when the fact it's not what they think) but they always blindly believe in TV and now in recent times in everything AI. And I'm not even talking that old, I've seen some 40 yo cousins of mine thinking AI content was real 😭

Has there been any studies on this? Any evolutionary aspect? My guess is uncanny valley is pretty important but then again, why aren't older generations feeling it in the most part?

AI Writing ✍️ This college is so full of crap!

This is a college assignment, absolutely ridiculous. I can't afford to not do the assignment since I'm already missing one and another zero will tank my grade (and ill have to take this ridiculous class again) so I'm currently just writing an essay about why AI sucks and should never be used in school.

AI "Art" 🖼️ How do we feel about doomer AI art? Spoiler

I noticed a rising sub genre of AI art that talks about the existential threats of rapid AI development. My co-worker just shared this video of Tetsuo with me yesterday, but other examples include gossip goblin’s new movie (Gods don’t give gift) as well as the P(DOOM) music video

On the one hand, it’s AI art. On the other hand, it preaches a lot of anti ideas. Kind of a hybrid

Going to pose this question on both subs

Preventing the Singularity Post-Scarcity is counterproductive

I've seen quite a few AI bros that want AI to unlock a post-scarcity world with infinite prosperity yada yada yada. If they got their wish what would happen exactly? Well I'll tell you. We would be far worse off in a PSW than how we are now, mainly because it would only serve to accentuate global and nation-level wealth inequality. It would create, at best, an impassable barrier, an eternal underclass being subjugated by an eternal overclass. The relative mobility we have today would be completely gone. In fact we would have "negative mobility". We would essentially be launched back into medieval times.

AI News 🗞️ LLM-Generated Virus Clears Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria From Patient

Thumbnail radicalnumerics.ai
0 Upvotes

Came across this story today. A lab used an LLM to generate virus variants as a last-resort effort to save a patient with antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection. From what I can tell reading the article, the LLM designed the virus based on the specific makeup of the patient's bacteria, tested variants in various samples, read the results, and looped through several iterations until it had an effective candidate, which the patient was then dosed with.

Is this not a worthwhile use of AI? If not, why not?

Discussion 🗣️ Slop has existed before AI, we're in a complete oligarchy.

Everyone here, is inside the biggest massive oligarchy.

We have never been more disconnected than ever.

I'm not saying, the invention of the social networks was intentional to turn all of this into a neo-oligarchy, but people have never been more disconnected than ever.

It takes a HUGE amount of energy to convince someone to go make a protest.

Even if people are able to organize, the commodity of having instant dopamine in the palm of your hand has hurt society more than ever.

And this is the price, culmination.

"Ai", LLMs, automated slop.

The technology is useful, but the owners of it don't care about the usefulness, it can generate automatic slop information, toxify the internet a lot more.

You try to discuss an LLM about oligarchies, it will inevitably take the most pacifist-centrist opinion available. It's okay after all, it is perfectly aligned.

Now, if you are addicted or you are too used to getting the output of an LLM, you will never get something outside the norm. Like, almost never.

I'm not saying that design is intentional, I'm just saying, LLMs are aligned to respond always towards a specific side.

Most developed countries have never had more freedom than ever regarding horizontal political issues. "LGBTQ, abortion, women rights, immigration..."

But when it comes to vertical political issues? Who owns what? We're FUCKED.

And we will be even more FUCKED if people keep consuming and giving away their critical thinking.

People can literally be dying and the slop machine will keep trying to reason with you to be a pacifist and not to risk it.

I just wanted to rant a little, AI could always wait, left and right could always wait. Ownership and having a better distributed economy? That should have been a priority, a decade ago.

Too busy enjoying TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, instagram, now you can barely enjoy any of them without having an ad blasted towards you every 25 seconds.

I literally would not care if none of the LLMs existed nowadays, they're currently just a tool to once again, fuck up even more the economy of all countries.

Preventing the Singularity Re: AI generative copyright and the "fruit from the poison tree" legal maxim that means even edited or "selection and arrangement" (thin copyright) fails due to § 103(a) and Anderson v Stallone standard. Each AI gen user would have to make an "offensive" fair use defense to get to § 103(b).

(a) The subject matter of copyright as specified by section 102 includes compilations and derivative works, but protection for a work employing preexisting material in which copyright subsists does not extend to any part of the work in which such material has been used unlawfully.

Discussion 🗣️ Is ai going to kill us by 2030?

I've been going down a heavy rabbit hole about extinction of humans by ai. I've been feeling hopeless and terrified for months now and wanted to ask what you guys think about this statement. True or false?
