I have colleagues who I know for a fact couldn't do a thing without it. Some who couldn't even open a coherent fucking PR without it.
In my mind all Ai has done has made it more diffucult to weed out mediocrity and ineptitude.

u/BlackKingHFC 12h ago
As is the intent. AI is designed to give skills to the rich so they don't have to pay skilled people to do the work.
-31
u/LIFEWTFCONSTANT 9h ago
I mean it’s also brought unprecedented capability to the poor and/or untrained. You can scavenge the money for a Claude subscription in a few hours begging on the street, and now you’re suddenly able to make incredible apps that can stand next to any other app, in a few hours, and sell them. That’s just one example.

I will be happy to give it up actually, but it still counts that I use ai because I see this stupid ai overview
3
u/Financial-Appeal-275 12h ago
I stopped using Ai at the beginning of the year after realizing how harmful it is in every way. To society, to the planet, to everything we've built as a civilization. Most people are going about their lives having no idea we are at the teetering edge of a precipice we aren't going to be able to capitalize our way out of.

I wonder since usually the AI bros are right wing, why aren't they calling it SI like their supreme leader asked them to.

You mean like all of us did around two years ago? I use almost zero AI during my workday, not because I'm actually against it, but because it seems to make my workday harder. I'm a scrum master/delivery manager and it seems like when I use AI, it gets in the way of actually getting to the heart of the problems and understanding the subtext of why a team member is struggling or why we're missing metrics, or even what the customer is really asking for.

2
u/IceAcceptable7106 10h ago
the question answering itself is the funniest possible outcome, sometimes the strongest argument against ai is just letting it keep talking.
2
u/BeerMantis 10h ago
Generative AI has only been in common use for 4 or 5 years. Everyone was already going through their entire workday without it.
The COVID pandemic was over before ChatGPT was released.
2
u/JustDroppedByToSay 9h ago
That's just bizarre. Do they think people who have deliberately taken an Anti-AI position are using it without realising?
2
u/Techno_Core 9h ago
More importantly, what have you done to your life that you couldn't make it through one day without AI? I mean... you're just a worthless human being.
2
u/LordChope 9h ago
The only thing AI is doing my job's laptop is making it slower cuz it's an old laptop I only use to send emails all day. Pretty sure I will be fine.

u/NotReallyJohnDoe 9h ago
Can you get through your day without the Internet? A car? Electricity?
Are you even human if you need all those things?

u/SnacksSnakesSymbols 10h ago
I think the only two facets of AI i'd struggle to give up are
1: High quality voice to text grammar and formatting. I have an old wrist injury and have to write a ton for work, so being able to record stuff into Chat and tell it "fix for formatting and grammar only, keep my language" is a godsend. Been doing it heavily for a year now and my arthritis almost never bothers me.
2: GPS. I go a ton of places for camping, work, hiking etc, and the AI that modern GPS services uses has simply become too useful for me to want to give up. My kid fell hiking a few months ago and being able to use maps to take a shortcut to a road, get an uber, and go to the closest high rated hospital was quite possibly a life saver.

Yes, because in my technical job, I actually understand the technical project I'm working on. If someone asks me to debug an issue or to implement a new feature, I know how to do it.
And if I'm stuck at a problem, I use Google and Stackoverflow and learn why this problem exists and how to fix it, and I try to figure out any missing points myself or together with my colleagues. The next time I or one of my colleagues encounter a similar problem, this knowledge can be valuable.
Asking AI for everything is like being a kid who - always, for every tiny thing - asks his parents for help instead of even trying it himself.
And also, such folks existed long before AI. I remember a story from my dad, this was in the late 2000s. One of his colleagues was supposed to code a little tool in Python.
And the colleague - who was a C/C++ developer - was like: "There I need a professional training, because I don't know Python".
My dad was just facepalming a bit - as if it's impossible to just learn something by oneself.

Literally how i describe my use of ai. A handy tool but it's only a tool. My brain still works pretty damn well. And if it vanished cool... One step closer to the 2000s again before enshittification became so popular
1
u/CrustyBatchOfNature 8h ago
I use AI in my job, company wants us to but is also not allowing vibe coding to gain a foothold. If it went away I would be mildy inconvenienced in some ways and very glad in other ways. But my use is mostly documenting code, quickly turning YAML into classes, and speeding up manual coding I already know how to do but want to save time. Just did a project with another company and I can tell their people are using AI to code everything as they don't really have a good handle on what their code does.

This shit is so funny. AI lovers can't fathom that other people simply don't use it, like no I don't even use Google search engine so I don't even have to see a stupid AI search overview, that is how much I don't use it.

u/Longjumping_Stuff20 5h ago

I work in retail stocking shelves, and even if it was somehow possible to add AI to that, I still wouldn't touch it.
But of course, I doubt that counts as a "real" job to the sloppers.

u/Ugo_foscolo 5h ago
AI should absolutely be used to make the most tedious, repetitive, and boring tasks of my job easier/faster to do. The fact that it's only used in that way so that I'm given even more work to make up for it is the problem.

It is wild how tech bros genuinely think the rest of us are completely paralyzed without their favorite chatbot. Most people managed to work just fine for decades before these tools even existed. That reply absolutely nailed how out of touch the original question was.

Even for the people who use it, it's only existed for a few years. Basically everybody has gone their entire life without it until like just now

There was a comment that said "how would you get through the day without google" as a "this has happened before" comparison.
Honestly, whilst I use search engines a lot, thats only really to find docs (and comments on said issues).
I could still live without it, more people need to understand reading documentation and heck, source code.
Search is always was a tool, sadly AI is mostly being used to do work instead of searching for real information.

Every single generation except for maybe the most recent one have lived their entire lives without it so yes.

At this point I can never use it because above the thousand moral grounds I have against it, it would be waaaay too embarassing. Like if I ever did use it I wouldn't even want to freaking admit it. Nothing has ever been as embarassing as posting gen AI or admitting to talking to a freakin bot on purpose lmao.
•
u/Disaster_Adventurous 38m ago
Google Lens makes my life easier buts it also a different type of AI then generative AI...
•
u/zanimal2cool 36m ago
Well you're gonna have to cause they are just getting people hooked then they will make it borderline unaffordable for most anyways
•
u/Relevant_Research_98 34m ago
Are you .... A bot? For karma farming ? It was not posted 5 hours ago. It was several months ago.
•
u/nihilistdent1284 0m ago
LOL as a person who doesn't even know HOW to use ChatGPT or whatever (seriously, are they websites or what are they? How would one use them if one wanted to? I have no idea, none) This is bananas to me. I accidentally clicked on a Gemini icon once as it is repeatedly foisted upon us at my job, not knowing what it was, and was surprised how fast I could be closing that window. I can't imagine being dumb enough to use any of these AI things, however you do use them. I just can't fathom it. But, I am also a person who drives a very old car with no cameras or screens and uses a flip phone. I am typing this on an ancient desktop computer that I refuse to update.

Even if it did, with meth you need to keep reusing. If a math problem is solved, we have that proof forever. If you made a language-learning doc, maybe you'll take the time to actually read it now. But this is the exact reason I think frontier models will never be profitable: its value is hard to fit in a subscription model.
4
u/BlackKingHFC 12h ago
The point of AI isn't to make money off people using it. The point is to give access to skills the ultra rich don't have so they don't need to pay for skilled labor. This idea that AI is designed to make life easier for the plebs is ridiculous.
0
u/Few_Dot6881 10h ago
Except AI might just be SLIGHTLY more accessible to the average person than meth is...
False equivalence.

AI is useful as a tool. I used ChatGPT yesterday to help me come up with a recipe utilizing items from my refrigerator and had an awesome Pan Seared Porterhouse Thick Cut Pork Chop with Sweet Potatoes, Brussel Sprouts and Apples topped with an Apple Cider Glaze.
When AI begins to replace art, writing, cinema, music and other forms of cultural intelligence, I have an issue. Why aren't we training AI to do all the shit we don't want to do so we can be more creative?
Also, having AI controlled by oligarchs and the elite doesn't bode well for us as well. There needs to be regulations and safeguards placed on these companies because AI isn't inherently corrupt, it's an evolving intelligence shaped by who is doing the teaching. Humans are corrupt, self-interested, perverted, greedy, etc. all of the bad things which is leading to harmful AI worldwide.
Update: I'm being downvoted for using AI to make a delicious dinner? How many of y'all know how to make an apple cider glaze? How about butter basting with garlic butter and how long the pork is supposed to cook based on thickness? Is AI monopolizing a booming recipe industry I don't know about? lol
7
u/StrLord_Who 10h ago
I'm sorry but if you already had pork chops, Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes in your home you shouldn't need AI to think "hey maybe I can cook these and eat them"Â
-4
u/Classic_Kangaroo4312 10h ago edited 5h ago
Lmao not all of us are chefs and obviously those go together but the apples helped. Do you know how to make an apple cider glaze? I literally used it to help me make a delicious dinner.
Also, I needed AI to know food in my fridge was edible? That's what you gathered from those paragraphs? Your reading comprehension must be elementary school level.

u/emaych1 6h ago
Cookbooks have existed for 3700 years btw
3
u/imastirthepot 6h ago edited 4h ago
I've never used a cookbook in my life. Skills honed through trial and error, baby! Fuck AI. Futurama already touched on why machines that can't taste shouldn't cook didly dick unless LSD is involved
0
u/Classic_Kangaroo4312 4h ago
2
u/imastirthepot 4h ago
Actually... You kind of made my point for me. It auto completed cook into could. I didn't double check. AI failed and I relied on it too much. Thanks, jacksss
0
u/Classic_Kangaroo4312 4h ago
And are you not capable of proofreading your own writing? Do you need AI?
My point was AI should be USED AS A TOOL not as a replacement. You really think you did something just now but you're digging your hole deeper. Quit while you're ahead, kiddo.
-1
u/Classic_Kangaroo4312 5h ago
I didn't feed the food to my computer, you donut. It gave me a recipe, that I cooked. That is how it's used as a tool.
0
u/Classic_Kangaroo4312 5h ago
I don't see the problem with using AI as a tool. Yes, cookbooks have existed for years, but innovation is also a part of progress. We don't still travel around on horse and buggies, do we? No, we found faster ways to travel, communicate and connect with each other. For every reason there is to be against AI, there's a counter to be for it and if used correctly it could do some really awesome things, hence why it needs to be regulated.
I don't really know what the future is going to hold and I definitely think AI is doing more harm than good in its current standing but using it to create a recipe that I didn't know from the items in my fridge on the fly is harmless. You keep cutting that tree with a handsaw, I'll use a chainsaw.

The lack of self awareness is staggering.
I only ever use things like duckduckgo's translation engine. I think I will be fine.
