Discussion Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) and flashcards

Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) is a speed reading method that displays words one at a time in a single fixed spot on a screen. By removing eye movements called saccades, it lets people read from 300 to over 1,000 words per minute (WPM) compared to the average adult reading speed of 238 WPM.

I was intrigued so I built a pipeline to ingest PDFs and give me RSVP voiceovers of a book. I kind of went into a trance for 20-30 minutes as it read to me and I stared at the flashing words. Had the thought to make something that worked with flashcards.

Could you see yourself using this in Anki to read the cards?

Discussion Quitting SRS?

Has anyone just quit using any sort of flash card system? How did it turn out for you?

I study Japanese for a few hours a day, but Anki is the biggest time-suck. I’m also so used to it being in my life, I’ve really lost all emotion toward it. I struggle to read the back of cards that I miss. The curiosity, joy, challenge, etc… it’s all gone. So getting through is really a slog.

I’m not going to add new cards for a while and turn it down to a measly 50 cards per day (have had about 250 for months, up to 500 max).

Overall it’s the least fun part of my studies, but maybe that’s just a phase? Anyway, I want to spend more time working with reading or focused grammar studies. どう?

Any experience or anecdotes would be nice.

Edit: reading would become my only SRS is what I mean. No more flash cards.

Discussion iPhone Duo optimization?

Hi, I am debating on getting the iPhone Duo so that I can use it to Anki with a bigger screen while I am on-the-go. Anki is my most used app.

Anyone know if the Anki iOS mobile app will be optimized for the iPhone Duo?

Tired of feeling doomed as you slowly chip away at the hundreds of cards you've spent hours doing?

Doom no longer!

Now you can change what appears above the "Show Answer" button, or hide it entirely!

If you can't see it, it doesn't exist, right?

https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1447799391?cb=1792540827438

(p.s. if you only liked the feature of hiding the review count you can do this without the add-on from preferences -> review -> turn off show remaining card count)

Discussion Flashcard Styles

I started using Anki by making very long and complex flashcards, where the individual review time could take 3 to 5 minutes just recalling concepts. A while ago I started updating my approach, and now I have shorter flashcards; the more complex ones take a maximum of 1 minute to recall, and the short ones only a few seconds. I’d like to know how you make your flashcards, just short ones or do you allow yourself a few more complete cards? I ask especially law students and students of subjects that require memorization of concepts, hypotheses, and scenarios, since that’s my niche. Greetings from Brazil.

Example of one of my flashcards:
Q: What are the consequences for a creditor who sues a debtor for a debt that has not yet matured (art. 939)?
(3)

A: They will be required to:

• wait for the remaining time until maturity;

• deduct the corresponding interest, even if agreed upon;

• pay double court fees.

Question How to: Individual Headers on Image Occlusion Cards (Anki Mobile!)

when I use the image occlusion of the desktop version of Anki. I get an individual header for each card.

When I create image exclusion cards on Anki mobile and then review and edit them, I get header, but header is the same for all cards of that note. I desperately need a header that is different on each card of my note.

How can I achieve that? Do I need to create a new note type and how would I do so?

Hey, quick question: does anybody know how to change the background on the new update? It updated and kicked my background off, and now I don't know how to change it.

Does this exist? I've looked, but can't find it in the built in version, not the advanced image occlusion add on.

Question Descending retrievability?

I've been using "due date then random" for my anki settings. I've been studying for the MCAT for about 2 months. Should I change it to "descending retrievability now? Or would that mess with my settings...

Discussion Mix testing with spaced repetition

Since testing is an important aspect of learning, would answering new, dynamically created questions along with the usual flashcards improve learning and retention?

Assuming the questions will change frequently, and would be unseen by the person reviewing the cards
