Announcement Updated Subreddit Rules & New Guidelines for the "Discussion" Flair + reminder for images and WT rules

10 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Over the past few weeks, the mod team has been working on cleaning up and updating our community rules to make [r/animesuggest](r/animesuggest) a better, clearer, and more organized space for finding and discussing anime.
While most of the core rules remain the same, we have reworded everything for clarity, tightened up content standards, and introduced strict new guidelines for the "Discussion" flair.

Here is what you need to know:

New "Discussion" Flair Guidelines
We’ve noticed that the Discussion flair often gets used for vague, low-effort titles (e.g., "Thoughts?", "Anyone seen this?", or "Is this good?"). Moving forward, all Discussion post titles MUST explicitly state the anime, genre, trope, or aesthetic being discussed. From now on if you see low-effort title please report post for breaking rule 11. We are doing this to prevent repetitive discussion posts and titles who are later nowhere to be found in searchbar even if it was discussed about it!

Don't post: "Thoughts on this show?" or "Does anyone else hate this?"

Do post: "Discussion: The pacing in Steins;Gate" or "Discussion: Why cyberpunk aesthetics hit different."
Any vague discussion posts without a clear, descriptive title will be removed and asked to be re-posted.

Important Reminder: Image Uploads & "Watch This!" Rules

Images are ONLY allowed for "Watch This!" posts. Request and Discussion threads must remain text-only. Direct image uploads on non-WT posts will not be approved. If you are posting image for WT post your post will be sent to manual review because of image but don’t hesitate to reach out via mod mail for faster approval

"Watch This!" posts have high standards. They are meant to be single-show, deep-dive reviews and must be at least 1,500 characters in length. Short reviews or multi-show list recommendations are not allowed for WT

Based on survey results images will not come back permanently but we will have 14 days chill moderation rule twice a year where images and other media will be allowed but this will be announced later on during this year.

Thanks for helping us keep [r/animesuggest](r/animesuggest) a great place for everyone.

Mod Team!

What to Watch? Give me anime focused on school life that don't have fan service.

• Upvotes

I was watching a video of someone explaining that the school in Yandere Simulator is completely unrealistic compared to what a Japanese high school is actually like. And he recreated the game's school based on real-world contexts; the YouTuber mentioned that he drew inspiration from anime such as "Highschool of the Dead" and "School Life" (or something like that, I don't remember).

And since I'm also writing a story based on a Japanese high school, I want to be as realistic as possible in terms of decoration when writing it. So I started watching the anime (Highschool Of The Dead) and not even a minute in and the fan service was already there. Which is very annoying to me; I can only very vaguely and in very few cases "accept" unnecessary fan service, and since it's a recurring theme in anime, I'd like you to recommend stories free of it.

If you're wondering what the fan service is in this case—SPOILER ALERT for those who want to watch this anime—; basically a female student character (I think one of the main characters) fell in a compromising way, making her underwear visible for seconds, and prior to that one of the zombies hit her with a stick that made her breasts move inappropriately.

What to Watch? Anime/manga that has genuinely motivated and inspired you in life?

13 Upvotes

Hey guys how’s it going

I’ve had my few share of posts on here, this one might be rough one.

I’ve dealt with a lot of trauma and mental health issues and I’m currently in a big battle with depression.

Anime & manga has been a huge part of my life and has helped me so much and brought me immense joy.

I love the perseverance of some of my favorite characters and I also like the reality of certain shows.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for any that has truly or genuinely inspired them when they were at their lowest moments? Or any anime that just brings joy?

On one hand I like stories where the MC is triumph on the other I like stories where they struggle a lot but I’m not sure if I like stories with sad endings, maybes now’s not the time for that.

If you guys have any anime that inspire hope and the freedom and will to live. Please do suggest. Or any anime you suggest.

Thank you for reading this. Thanks to anime & manga!

What to Watch? Serious / Dark Fantasy / Crime / Action / Thriller / Sci-Fi Anime's Similar To Psycho Pass / Devil May Cry / Castlevania / Ergo Proxy / Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

8 Upvotes

Pretty much the title, as I've gotten older I haven't been able to get through more than an episode or two of an anime where it's either all PG friendly or there's "kawaii ooo maii gaaa" type scenes or it starts itself out as a serious-type anime and then you just have a bunch of cutesy goofy silly scenes that break the immersion of the story being told that was initially selling itself as something serious (i.e kaiju no8 which I loved up until it started being 60% kawaii goofiness and 40% action or thrilling story)

Please don't downvote me into oblivion because I've offended you somehow. I'm just a dude looking for some good shows to watch that fit what I'm looking for lol

What to Watch? Anime recommendations for an older guy (40+)

66 Upvotes

Hi,

As an adult (40+ - am I an old fart?) I'm looking to get into Anime. I did try a few (one-two episodes) in the past, but felt it was either childish, or just not interesting.

So I'm looking for Anime for adults, I'm looking for a wide range of genres - love sci-fi/fantasy/horror/action/mecha robots, etc.

Any good suggestions would be appreciated.

What to Watch? Looking for fun fantasy romance shows

11 Upvotes

First of all, yes I know that the Fem Draco meme has kind of a dark history behind its origin as somehow the meme inspired me to see if there were any anime series about a girl who has superpowers that has a Tsundere like trait where she eventually warms up to a guy.

I mean, I don’t mind if the show is a bit spicy in nature because I was looking for some fun fantasy anime with strong romantic elements about a couple who can use superpowers where again a girl who comes off as bossy at first glance eventually warms up to her love interest since I was wondering if there were any romantic stories like Harry Potter.

What's this From? (unsolved) Unknown anime scene from a Youtube Short

3 Upvotes

This has been bugging me for a while. I want to say sometime last year, I saw a YT short clip from an anime and I cannot for the life of me find where it's from. From what I remember, it took place in a modern city. There was a person with a sniper rifle who shot at someone who was walking with someone else on the street. The bullet was either dodged or missed. I also remember a vague sort of "transformation" where it looked like white bandages/paper stuck onto a person's face. I wish I could remember more. Please help me get rid of this nagging thought I've had for over a year, thank you!

Discussion What 1970s-1980s movies or shows do you think Science Saru could remake?

1 Upvotes

You can choose any movies or shows you want from the 70s to the 80s, but it must fit these requirements:

  1. Comedy, Drama, sitcom, Crime, Action (James bond not allowed) Mystery, Sci-fi (Star Wars or Star Trek are not allowed), Romance, Western, Musicals, Adventure, Rom-Com, Fantasy, anime,Thriller, or horror (but no Halloween, Child's Play, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, or Exorcist are allowed)
  2. only PG, PG-13, or R-Rated movies are allowed.
  3. Why do I have to explain the rules? Just do whatever the hell you want, as long as the movies or shows are from 1970-1989.

What's this From? (unsolved) Old sci-fi anime featuring an expanding dome of darkness that scientists and the military try to investigate

13 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I've been trying to identify an anime I watched as a kid, but I can only remember a few scenes from it. I've already ruled out quite a few series, so I'm hoping someone might recognize this description.

  • I watched it on TV, no streaming services, definitely no later than 2013
  • The anime itself could be significantly older, possibly from the 1980s, 1990s, or early 2000s
  • I remember the animation having a somewhat retro, hand-drawn style

At some point in the story, a huge mass or dome of absolute darkness appeared and started expanding, seemingly swallowing or engulfing everything it came into contact with.

It wasn't a dark sky, a shadow cast over an area, or a metaphorical representation of evil, but an actual, physical phenomenon within the anime's world, almost like an expanding void or black hole.
The characters perceived it as an extremely dangerous and potentially catastrophic event.

What I remember most distinctly is that scientists and military personnel were trying to study and understand this phenomenon, but their attempts were unsuccessful.
I also vaguely remember them attempting to send probes or remotely controlled robots/androids into the darkness, without success. I think their equipment stopped functioning or transmitting once it entered the affected area

I have also a vague recollection that the appearance of this darkness might have been connected to a major plot twist involving a female character, possibly an antagonist, who sacrificed herself or gave something up. However, I could be mixing this up with another anime.

Some anime I've already ruled out are:

  • Akira
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Giant Robo
  • Gilgamesh
  • Digimon Tamers
  • RahXephon
  • Code Geass
  • Eureka Seven
  • Blue Seed
  • Soul Eater
  • Dennou Coil
  • Noein
  • Darker than Black

I'm not sure whether it was a TV series, an OVA, or a movie, although I suspect it was a TV series.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Even suggestions for specific episodes involving something similar would be incredibly helpful.

Thanks in advance to everyone!

What to Watch? I want to see a romance comedy anime (or manga) with this trope

5 Upvotes

Girl that tries to look tough because she is a softie and get bullies and bullies the top bully without knowing he is, but he is amused and plays along with her, protecting her behind her back.

Bonus points if she tries to make it up for him while "bullying" him.

What to Watch? Anime of any genre except horror or isekai that are very romantic?

19 Upvotes

Romantic as in main characters falling in love throughout the story and doing romantic things together like going on dates, picnics, kissing, etc. I know it sounds silly/weird but basically an anime that has the same vibe as La La Land, Titanic, or K-Dramas lol

The ending doesn't have to be happy though. I accept anime where the lovers don't end up together in the end too.

What to Watch? Seggest anime

2 Upvotes

I've watched and liked: vinland saga, classrom of the elite, solo leveling, shaman king, both FMA, OPM, demon slayer, frieren, JJK, CSM, the emeinence in shadow, attck on titan, rurouni kenshin. death note, mushoku tensei. monster. and maybe a couple more.

The ones i've tried but couldn't go on watching: code geass(liked the main character, but it's just too old and too cartoony for me), same goes for Dr. Stone. There is one I was expecting to hook me up but it didn't, I don't remember the name, but it's pretty well know(people there can use sort of magical abilities, the main character is blode and there's this strongest mustache guy who iirc commads shadows or something). It also has like 4 season and the order is messed up.

To sum it up, I think I just can't watch too old anime, espesially if it's unserious, cartoony/childish and/or poorly aimated. If we take solo leveling as the lowest bar animation and entertainment wise, is there something to watch?

Discussion Why are Original Anime so rare?

7 Upvotes

Apologies if this is the wrong forum to be discussing such a subject matter because I needed to get it off my chest as I am having hard time finding Anime series in the modern era of the medium that are not based on a pre existing work.

I mean, don’t get me wrong in that light novel based stuff such as KimiZero is a fine show for its cozy romance vibes as I just want to start writing a catalog for myself about some of the finest anime series that were completely original so that I don’t have to wait for the show to catch up with its source material as I enjoy watching action based shows with supernatural elements.

What to Watch? Wholesome slice of life, comedy, slow animes

16 Upvotes

I'm pretty new to the anime world. Watched most of the popular stuff.

I need suggestions on what to watch next.

Here are my favorites.

* Non Non Biyori

* Violet Evergarden

* Demon slayer

* Spy Family

* Frieren

Few that I liked (there's more but can't recall)

* Daily lives of high school boys

* Haikyu

* Colors

* Smoking Behind the supermarket with you

* Chainsmoker Cat

* Sakomoto Days

* AoT

* Death Note

* Konosuba

Things I didn't vibe with (again I can't recall much of it)

* Hunter Hunter

I'm looking for light hearted relatable animes with adult themes (NOT nsfw) like frieren, violet Evergarden or cute kids like spy family, non non biyori.

Not high school/teenage drama or love story theme. Most of the stuff in slice of life genre i can find are like this.

Preferably without deep magic fantasy, this is not a deal breaker but with more focus on story.

Thanks in advance

What to Watch? Are there any other manga that collects the main cast like one piece?

20 Upvotes

Basically the title. Looking for something where the main character starts out from 0 and slowly collects the main cast along the way.

Another good example off the top of my head is shin from kingdom.

I’m not talking about main character is apart of X organization and new characters join throughout the story. I mean like shin and luffy started out with nothing and built everything on their own backs.

(Now that I think about it a lot of isekai probably fit this description I know rimuru does and technically solo leveling too but those somehow feel different. Idk let me know)

Discussion Favorite anime series that push boundaries so hard they cannot be matched

12 Upvotes

Apologies if I am at the wrong place or time to be creating such a discussion because I have penchant for ecchi anime where the show is meant to be so over the top with its obscene nature that it basically becomes difficult for other ecchi anime to compete with it.

What inspired me to write this particular subject was that I was fondly recalling the TV show B Gata H Kei where the premise is about a lonely girl looking for satisfy her perverted desires by seeking a romantic relationship with a cute guy so that *ahem* she can discover the passion of lovemaking for herself as the show never had a true conclusion, but I kind of wish there were more anime like with a wild premise.
