USA telling my story: considering abortion at 18 weeks. seeking any input. *TW: Violence.*
The purpose of this post is to maybe find some Internet strangers able to offer any words of advice, insight, information, tips, personal anecdotes, literally anything. I’ve got thick skin so don’t be shy.
I (28F) am pregnant by my boyfriend (23M). We share a lease together in a state where abortion is illegal after 6w. We started dating in July 2025 and moved in together October 2025. In early November 2025, I got a MA at 7w. Probably due to untreated mental health and emotional issues, I felt immense grief and regret and was deeply depressed. I proceeded in the relationship not using any sort of caution in sex because I was so upset about ending the first pregnancy, I felt I’d be happy to get pregnant again. This time, I found out pretty late. By the time I tested positive and had an ultrasound, I was 11w (in a state where they just say: “Congratulations!”). I felt overwhelmed but happy about it. At 11w5d, I attended a bachelorette party that had been planned for over a month (the plan including my boyfriend being my ride home that night). When he picked me up, he lied and told me he was not drunk. By his driving, I realized he was. We pulled in the driveway and he said “I may not remember it, but at least I got us home.” I became devastated and cried really hard. He became angry, saying mean things and telling me to shut up. I told him I’m very upset and hormonal and that my crying is unlikely to subside for some time, so if it bothered him I will leave, but since I know he will not let me leave, will he please leave? And he wouldn’t. (In our relationship, any time we have a disagreement and I motion to leave, he refuses to let me by physically getting in the way — blocking the door with his body 2x the weight of mine, taking my keys, taking my phone, physically grabbing me — whatever. Clearly a red flag that I ignored, but his argument was always that he was scared I was leaving angry and didn’t want me driving/leaving angry, so I looked past it). So, I grabbed the snacks I would need, my keys, my phone, and put my shoes on. I motioned to the door. He got in front of me and walked into me til we got to the bedroom. He slapped the snacks out of my hands (watermelon and cheez its all over the floor).
Short version: He violently attacked me.
Long, graphic version: He slammed me on the bed. He strangled me with his hands. He punched me in the arm, hip, butt, and leg. He kept doing this terrifying squeeze, like a violent hug, in which I would squirm up to try to keep it under my belly rather than over to protect the baby. I was absolutely terrified. This went on for at least ten minutes. I was hyperventilating, crying, begging him to stop. He picked me up and he was drunk so he slipped on the watermelon he had spilled and we slammed down on tile floor. He picked me up again and threw me on the couch. He started going on about how I was going to start respecting him and then he ended up crying. I took that moment of emotion and felt his phone on the couch and said gently “hey, I’m gonna call your best friend, let’s just calm down” kinda thing. When his friend got on the phone I said please I need you to come here, this is not for my boyfriend this is for me. My boyfriend kept muting the phone to tell me to shut up and when he would unmute it I would go back to begging. He ended up going in the bedroom to talk to him away from me and I took that opportunity to run out the front door — barefoot, in pajamas, no glasses. He ran after me so I yelled “help! help!” and he stopped. He pulled up in his car and asked me to get in, I said no. He said my friend is almost here, will you get in his car? I said yes. His friend picked me up and I told him what happened. A cop pulled up so we all went in the house. I said I will not sleep under the same roof as my boyfriend unless his friend also stays over, so his friend stayed.
Everything since then has been extremely rough. The first week after, I kept asking my boyfriend to get out of the house, that we are broken up and I don’t want him around me. It took him over a week to finally leave. In that week he was there, we kept sliding back into “normal.” It was difficult and confusing for me. During that time our puppy we co-own had to undergo a procedure and required a lot of care, so that added to the layers of difficulty. When he finally left and I had space and time to think, I thought maybe I should get an abortion. I called my mom and told her I’m pregnant (not that I was abused) and that I was struggling to make a decision on keeping or terminating. Fortunately, my mom lives in the state I grew up in, where abortion is legal until 24w. She advised me to make an appointment for the abortion so that in case I want to, I can get it. She also found me a therapist to meet with via telehealth appointments to help me decide. By the time I flew home and met with my OBGYN, I was 14w. She unfortunately was going on vacation and could not do a D&E procedure for me, so she forwarded me to a clinic at the hospital she works.
I scheduled the procedure for when I would have been 16w, but decided instead I wanted to keep the pregnancy, mainly because of a moral dilemma I had in terminating a pregnancy that was so progressed, where I had already seen its legs, feet, toes, hands, fingers, nose, mouth, heartbeat… I also knew I needed to make more money so I decided to fly back to the home my boyfriend and I share so I could work. When I got there, from what my therapist says, I was triggered. My puppy seemed afraid of him (he has an ‘aggressive’ way of disciplining her) and it made me scared for how my child will feel around him. I went into a severe depression for a few days and did not go to work as I had planned to, worrying I might have made the wrong decision. With my mom’s encouragement, I got back on a plane to fly home. I had not yet cancelled the procedure so I could’ve gone in the day after my flight and gotten an abortion, but I decided not to go. I felt so overwhelmed and confused. When I canceled, the doctor asked me why I’m on the fence, and I said “because this was a pregnancy I was happy about until my partner became violent.” She connected me to a few resources and it’s helped me to recognize that… what I experienced cannot be overlooked.
It is so difficult for me to come to terms with his violence and that it may be a reason worth ending this little life I’ve been growing inside of me. I don’t want to pain a child with a broken home. It would be difficult for me to do this without a partner. I worry what the child will feel growing up with a father only partially involved in his/her life (he has agreed to support financially and said he would plan to visit the child as frequently as he could in the state I would live in with my mother to raise the child for the sake of me avoiding being stuck in his state for 18 years).
I am starting to really think it may be the best thing for me to terminate the pregnancy. That way I can get out of this relationship without ties, but it’s really hard because I’m essentially going through a break up while trying to make this decision. The emotional side of my brain wants to stay in the mindset of us staying together or at the very least successfully coparenting together.
The truth I realize in therapy and as time passes is I was in over my head getting pregnant in the first place, regardless of his behavior. I did not think about this as seriously as I should have prior to acting on whim with my sex life. My therapist has helped me to realize how strongly I value family. A fairy tale to me sounds like marrying a loving and supportive husband, buying a house as close to my parents’ house as I can, and raising several children in a structured home where we can make beautiful memories. It has taken me so long to accept, but it is probably going to be easier for me to do achieve that if I terminate this pregnancy. I just have an entire rabbit hole of fears that go along with terminating a pregnancy I initially wished for.
If you were to ask me the reasons for keeping a pregnancy, the best I can say is it’s more a feeling than any particular reason…
There’s so much more I could say but I’ll end the post here. I’m 18w now by the way so time is really of the essence, not just because of the law but because in my opinion, holding onto this pregnancy any longer than I have to if I am getting rid of it is cruel both on me and the fetus.
