25 Year Old iPod Completely Dead Despite eBay Description Saying It Is Tested And Working

I bought the iPod on eBay which was delivered to my house today. Upon receiving the iPod, it didn't power on on its own despite it being unlocked, so I plugged the iPod (1st generation) onto an iMac G5 with the Firewire 6 pin by 6 pin and it wouldn't power on. I have waited over an hour and it still didn't work. I may have to buy new batteries. I (25M) specifically bought it to review it because the iPod was announced on 23 October 2001 and was released 2 weeks later. I tried to hold the menu and centre buttons but even that wouldn't help restart.

Found this stem wall undermined with a pretty significant void beneath it. That was only one of several structural issues we came across this week.

A rare ladybug landed on me at work.. and then..

A rare gynandromorph (both male and female, split down the middle) ladybug landed on me at work. I collect specimens so I was debating making an enclosure for it until it naturally passed to then preserve it, but then figured that'd be cruel and it should be free.

I watched it fly off shortly after, and directly into the path of a truck tire...

Edit: not a ladybug, an Asian beetle.

Good Bourbon Gone Bad

I was going to sit outside and read a book and sip some bourbon this evening. The gnats had a different plan for me.

So apparently I experienced withdrawal last night after taking a half dose of my antidepressant 😬

I have been on desvenlafaxine for a couple months with no issues but three weeks ago my doctor decided to switch me to venlafaxine to see if it would improve my symptoms even more. Well apparently venlafaxine often has stronger withdrawal symptoms because your body metabolizes it faster. I didn't know this when i took a 150mg dose instead of 225mg because I forgot to bring the 75mg bottle with me on a weekend trip. I got so sick (and still am) and was nearly ready to go to urgent care because I thought something had to be wrong. These are the texts I sent my mom before I was able to figure out the problem. Needless to say, I'll be switching back medications because I can't handle such high consequences any time I forget a dose. I have a newfound respect for anyone who has gotten through withdrawal to quit something. This is beyond miserable.

NHS Scotland surgeon refused surgery for appendicitis and told me antibiotic treatment is better - didn’t work out well..

0 Upvotes

A cautionary tale of woe to take into account if you get appendicitis and your surgeon comes at you suggesting or insisting upon antibiotic treatment as an alternative to surgery.

Surgeon refused to take my appendix out when I had appendicitis and told me the following;

“Surgery for uncomplicated appendicitis is outdated and a mistake of the past, antibiotics is better and the future of treatment”

And

“After antibiotic treatment your appendix will shrivel up and be cured, and you will have just a 15% chance of reoccurrence..”

He refused my repeated and valid requests for surgery and continued to make more and more dubious claims about the benefits of antibiotic treatment, such as..

“Going along with antibiotic treatment will be like money in the bank for your business..”

He treated me with 56 infusions of triple IV antibiotics and IV paracetamol over 5 days then discharged me with no follow-up telling me I was ‘cured’. As I was discharged I said to him “this has all been a bit experimental”. In reply he snorted down his nose at me and said emphatically;

“You have no more chance of coming back in here with appendicitis than the average man in the street”

I left that hospital with what has now been diagnosed as permanent neurological/brain damage from one of the antibiotics pumped into me, and with a tumour growing in my appendix that had caused my appendicitis and would go on to rupture and become a stage 4 tumour later.. The NHS refused a second opinion as my GP’s referral and escalation letter was ignored.

I eventually paid a private surgeon in Glasgow to take my appendix out - that’s when the ruptured tumour was found - but by that stage no longer curable by appendectomy. I also had to pay for private neurologist tests and scans to have my nurotoxicity symtoms diagnosed.. I complained to the NHS but they claimed to have done nothing wrong, and would do the same again..

I did a bit of reading up.. The evidence in the medical literature supports the following;

- 50% treated with antibiotics will have reoccurrence within 4 years, many involving subsequent rupture.

- 1 in 30 cases of adult appendicitis are caused by a tumour in the appendix that can’t be seen in scans. If left it these tumours will go on to cause appendix cancer.

The linked article is a recent study that follows up about 1000 appendicitis patients and supports the above facts. The study concludes;

“Conclusions
Antibiotic treatment of appendicitis is associated with high recurrence and risk of missed neoplasms. Appendicectomy is safe, with low rates of significant complication. When offering nonoperative management for appendicitis, patients should be informed about the risk of recurrence and missing sinister pathologies.”

The evidence says that treating appendicitis with antibiotics is just kicking the can (or grenade) further down the road for the majority of patients. It seems that some surgeons are not following the evidence and misguiding patients. Where does ‘informed patient consent’ fit into all of this..? I’m interested to hear other people’s views and experiences with this..

I have this exactly backpack that sits in my closet not realizing it was so expensive. When I got it, what did I do? Removed the lanyard that it came with so now it’s no longer considered a complete piece.

I had a very busy day and when I got home I made a Velvetta Skillet meal, when I sat down to eat it, something tasted wrong. I set aside and assumed it was my stomach. Here I forgot to add the seasoning packet and the cheese at the end. I basically had elbow pasta and ground turkey

This is the Burigonga river of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Can't believe these types were clean enough that river water was the primary source of drinking water for people just a few decades ago ...

Nobody came to my Halloween party

Half the guests cancelled in the time it took me to walk back from the store after buying all the food (and alcohol).

Edit: I know it's not Halloween yet. This is the week that worked for me.

Edit II: I love y'all. Did not realize Reddit had such a lust for mud pie/dirt. Another friend invited me out for drinks; life is good. AND I have the leftovers. Be well and stay spooky, friends.

I rustled up a beautiful home cooked beef stew in the crockpot yesterday. It fed the family and made 4 mini meals for the MiL. I went to unplug the cooker this morning and the top of the plug came off in my hand, which briefly came into contact with the internal parts of the plug. I wasn't launched across the room or anything, just a sharp tingle. Being British, I had a cup of tea to settle myself and have composed a strongly worded email to Crockpot, criticising the quality of their plug.

Shed flew away????

During a time with very strong winds, my house's shed ripped free of its foundation, cleared a six-foot fence, and hit our neighbor's swingset hard enough that it was essentially turned inside-out. While both of my parents were on the other side of the country and I, nineteen, was the only legal adult in the house.

Apparently that was the third shed my Dad has lost like this and this is just a thing that can happen in the Midwest. Some warning would have been nice.

(Edit: I should specify that the first two sheds were at his childhood home in the seventies, and this shed was already in the yard when we moved into this house. At that point the foundation had already been dry, and it was anchored down but no one accounted for the wood rotting like that.)
