VPN Recommendations Megathread - Best VPN Providers, user reviews & VPN Deals

We get a lot of questions about the best VPNs and which VPNs have the best user reviews as well as where to find the best VPN deals. That's why we run this VPN recommendations megathread every two months. This is the one and only place on the subreddit to ask for VPN recommendations, share your favorite VPN provider, discuss your experience, and post legitimate VPN deals.

The goal is to build a collection of genuine VPN user reviews that helps others choose the right VPN provider.

If you’re recommending a VPN, make it useful:

  • Share what you use it for (streaming, privacy, gaming, torrenting, travel, bypassing geo-blocks, etc.).
  • Go beyond generic features - personal experience is very interesting for our user-base
  • Comments that only name a provider will be removed

Main rules:

  • No affiliate or referral links.
  • No links to VPN review websites.
  • No obvious shilling

Compare VPN providers first

Before posting, check out our regularly updated VPN comparison table, where you can compare features, pricing, speeds, streaming support, and more. It may answer your question before you need to ask.

As always, this thread is actively moderated to keep recommendations genuine, helpful, and free from spam.

VPN Comparison Table

Best VPNs comparison table in Google Sheets

* * *

Most of us here are quite keen on spreading the word on how even the simplest steps toward online privacy is a huge leap forward for our online security. Having in mind the extensive tracking and targeting by almost everything we use online (ISPs, search engines, social media, streaming sites, ads, etc.), we're able to use these VPN-related subreddits to try and make it as simple as possible for people to choose and start using the best VPN that can help avoid at least some part of that.

The goal of all of this is to make sure that even those who don’t understand much about tech are aware of the risks and challenges we face these days when it comes to online privacy. We're all aware that a VPN isn't an 'all in one' tool which fully protects our privacy, but it's surely a good place to start.

It’s probably obvious to people who have been following this topic for a while that this table is inspired by That One Privacy Guy. He did an amazing job back in the day but unfortunately the information hasn't been updated in ages so it isn't as reliable as it used to be. It was a very important and useful tool, so I thought we could make it a community effort to bring it back. Anyone who would like to collaborate on this please get in touch with me over DMs. Also, in case you notice any mistakes - feel free to point those out, too.

You will see a table with scores, explanations on how each score was calculated, as well as detailed information by provider for each criteria. As I mentioned before, if you notice any mistakes or outdated information - please DM me with the source so we can fix it. Let's make sure it's up to date and as helpful as it can

Discussion What's the weirdest internet restriction you've encountered at work or school?

Some schools and workplaces have surprisingly strict internet restrictions, and a few of them make absolutely no sense.

I get blocking certain websites for security reasons, but I've heard of places blocking YouTube tutorials, cloud storage services, or even basic communication tools that people actually need for work or studying.

What's even more frustrating is when something works perfectly fine on mobile data but becomes completely inaccessible on the office or campus Wi-Fi.

And then there's the VPN situation. Some networks block VPN connections entirely, while others seem to block certain protocols or services.

What's the strangest restriction you've run into?

Discussion Channel 4 (UK) no longer working in the last 24 hours, anyone else?

I was watching Channel 4 on my Apple TV and my iPad yesterday, no problem, based in the US. Today I tried to watch Channel 4 and it says "This programme is not available in your area." My date/ time is set to London. My login is a UK address and UK credit card. I tried cycling servers on VPN, didn't work. Also tried over both WiFi and mobile data on my iPhone with all the above fixes, doesn't work there either. Anyone else have this problem? All my other UK channels work - BBC, ITV, and even Channel 5, which is the same company as Channel 4.

Help 400 strangers in my family VPN

Started with WireGuard on a spare PC for family/friends. Dropped configs in a local Telegram group and it blew up to 60 people—one core, no client isolation, total mess. Rebuilt on proper VPSs (WireGuard + Outline + Xray, managed via BeAdmin): now sitting at 3 servers, ~400 peers, multi-hop across two countries, all free. Funny thing is bandwidth isn't even the bottleneck—it's the uptime pressure when a 20-min outage means someone's mom can't text them. Anyone else accidentally become the unpaid ISP for their local community?

Question Please settle the gaming vpn debate for me. With Evidence

There are a multitude of online debates raging about the use of gaming vpns like the big E/L/M

Anecdotally I want to say they work but whenever I say this in a public forum I get clowned on by 'networking' gurus who know so much more than me.

I'm no expert but from chatgpt/google/online articles I have surmised the below.

Those vpns dont lower your physical ping across x distance. What they can/claim to do is perhaps make your ping better by efficient routing IF you have ASS routing to begin with. (assume your physical hardware is not the bottleneck)

E.g Aus to Japan has a MINIMUM ping of ~100ms due to raw distance. In some instances, your ISP maybe taking a longer route from you to Jpn and you might get a ping of 180. A paid vpn in this case would reduce your ping to closer to 100, since they'd be using better infrastructure OR less physical hops to the destination i.e not sure maybe a less cogested underwater cable through the oceans?

The feedback I've gotten is:
-you're dumb ass no ISP would take a shit route as its against their quality of service
-stfu gaming vpns dont work
-All tech takes the best path vpns dont help at all

I've also been reading about the BGP and understand it automatically takes the best route (I.E should be the shortest path/best path to your destination anyway) BUT your ISP still may have parameters that inhibit this thus the higher ping and non consistent ping across diffrent ISP's

To test this (and yes its not the best method) I've been using RIPEatlas to find probes for some local isps and tracert some non oce game servers/locations to see the difference between them but obviously this is very flawed since not all probes are direct from the ISP and can severely be limited by local factors.

I've also spent time literally swapping ISPs to check in real time from my system and can see ping vary between games where the server is overseas.

I used jpn as the reference as i googled non oce games to check in real time and came across the below games to test - Throne and Liberty and a recent game Aion 2 whos closest servers to OCE are Jpn.

Most shit ISPs i tried gave me pings of around 180-200+
My main ISP got me 103-106.

- Don't want to advertise any VPN but of the the ones i tried (the main big ones) got the shit ISPs down to 110-130 and made a physical difference to gameplay responsiveness - anecdote i know, sue me.

-did not make a difference that i could see for my main ISP that was already on the near max of 103 ping - which makes sense given my explanation above.

Recently, one of those games had an update, im not sure of the mechanism but people were claiming it caused OCE to route differently to the local jpn servers, so my main ISP ping rose dramatically to 200-300 making it unplayable but as before, the VPNsi tried, brought it down to 120, and got back to responsive play.

Noone wants to have a conversation about this with me, theyre all just anti gaming VPN and i must be regarded to consider one so here I am hoping for some clarity online.

No i dont want to ignore the haters and play - i want to understand the tech and be able to support my arguments. List any further resources you might have that i can read

Help RDP connection from LAN takes long time to establish when vpn is connected.

Hi Guys,

I have a RDP server, I normally connect it from my other devices in the same LAN. What I found is: if I use VPN on the RDP server to connect to internet, it will take around 40s or more to establish the RDP connection. After the connection is established, the speed is just normal. The response of the RDP server is just smooth because it's in the same LAN. And if VPN is not connected on the RDP server, the RDP connection from the same LAN is established instantly.

40s delay is not that bad. But if there is a way to get rid of it, it's better.

Any clue?

Thanks.

Help VPN and Gmail

Okay anyone familiar with both Gmail activity and VPN's. I'm not versed in the world of VPN so need some input.

Knowing that gmail my activity captures and records your IP sign in location and also can trigger verification if you sign in from a different location.

I have to keep my location settings on for gmail, I'm going to be in California for awhile but I need my gmail activity data to record me in PA. I will only be signing in from Mac. Not mobile

Is there anything I need to be aware of so gmail my activity doesn't capture or recognize me being in CA or any other location.

I do have a paid VPN

Question My vpn on Windows 11 says my online activity may be monitored, but the certificate looks legit

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone! This morning my Vpn app on my Windows 11 laptop showed this warning (screenshot attached), saying it couldn't validate the TLS certificate and that my online activity may be monitored. The certificate is issued by Sectigo, valid from 15/05/2026 to 30/11/2026, fingerprint AE83F714B52FB95AC59C5A874F2B599001C4A5D8, and I have Avast installed. I tried to look up the fingerprint on crt.sh but it only returns a bad gateway, can anyone check it or tell me what I should do before marking it as trusted?

Question Built a split tunnelling mobile app, also through different providers. Worth releasing (for free)?

Hello everyone,

Just checking if I shall spend some more time for the community and release publicly an app I built for myself.

Android only lets one VPN run at a time, and split tunneling in most VPN apps is just on or off: an app either uses the VPN or skips it. I wanted more than that, so I built my own.

What it does:

each app gets its own exit. Eg: everything through France, one streaming app through the US, another through Italy, banking apps outside the VPN

all at the same time, using Android's single VPN slot

you can mix providers, e.g. provider x for one app and provider y for another, mixing exists

Tailscale is built in, so my home server stays reachable while the VPN is on (normally impossible, since Tailscale is also a VPN) - and possibility to assign an app to tailscale egress point

kill switch, favourite servers, automatic server pick, quick settings tile

Dozens of providers wired, config import

Honest caveat: I only use just only one provider, so the other providers are built from their official docs and haven't been tested with real accounts yet.

I made it for myself and it works for me. If enough people would use it, I'll put in the extra time to clean up the code and publish it on Google Play and F-Droid, free (with donations) and open source. No ads, no tracking, no account with me.

Would you use something like this? Which provider are you on?

Thanks!

Discussion I built an open-source Android app around the ByeDPI engine (written with AI, feedback welcome)

I made an Android app that runs the open-source ByeDPI engine locally and routes the phone's traffic through it using Android's VPN service. It's designed to help with DPI filtering that interferes with connections.

Full disclosure: This project was written with AI. All code and documentation were generated by Claude (Anthropic) based on my requirements, and I built and tested it through GitHub Actions. The project has not been audited, so please review the code before trusting it. So far, it has only been tested by me on my own phone and network.

What it does Compiles the upstream ByeDPI C code with the Android NDK and runs the actual engine, not a simulation. Uses a local proxy (127.0.0.1) and tun2socks tunnel (hev-socks5-tunnel) through Android's VpnService. Only shows a connected status after verifying the proxy, VPN interface, and tunnel. Provides settings for desync method, position, fake TTL, TLS record splitting, automatic mode, and custom arguments. Includes a diagnostics screen with an in-memory log and a TLS connectivity check through the proxy. No hosts or traffic details are logged. Has a dark UI with no ads, analytics, or accounts. What it doesn't do It does not encrypt traffic or hide your IP address. It does not bypass DNS blocking. There is no universal strategy that works for every ISP. You may need to experiment with different settings. Technical details Android: 8.0+ Architectures: arm64, armv7, x86_64 Build: Debug-signed APK (uninstall older builds before updating) License: MIT. ByeDPI and hev-socks5-tunnel are also MIT-licensed.

Repository: https://github.com/Mireli5656/Byedpi

APK: Available under Releases on the repository page.

Feedback and bug reports are welcome! If something doesn't work, use the Copy button on the Diagnostics screen to share a log. It contains no traffic details.

Help Can’t use VPN through windows mobile hotspot

I have shared the VPN adapter through the hotspot via the adapter settings and I have tried changing the protocols to UDP and TCP.

Every time I get the notification on the mobile hotspot page saying “there’s no internet connection to share, but your mobile hotspot is still turned on”.

Anyone got any advice or reasons why I can’t get through this?

Discussion I built an open-source tunnel for Iran’s filtered internet, up to 1.6 Gbps over TCP and 33 MB/s when

Hi everyone,

In Iran right now, many routes to the outside world cut TCP and UDP after a few packets, and sometimes only ICMP (ping) gets through. Most tunnels stall in those conditions, so I built WatTunnel, an open-source tunnel designed specifically for them.

  • TCP tunnel: up to 1.6 Gbps download and 2.2 Gbps upload
  • Only ping open? Up to 33 MB/s over ICMP. On the same route and servers, the best competitor (BackPack) got 6.1 MB/s, and GOST 1.6–5.4 MB/s.
  • Cloudflare with ECH: up to ~650 Mbps. It gets past SNI filtering even when your domain is blocked, and finds working Cloudflare IPs by itself.
  • 9 transports (icmp, udp, tcp, tls, ws, wss, h2, h2c, grpc), WireGuard support, Auto mode that tests every transport from one token, one-line install
  • Written in Go, MIT-licensed, encrypted with ChaCha20-Poly1305

Benchmarks, methodology and full details are in the repo:
https://github.com/JohnWatsoon/WatTunnel

Feedback is very welcome, especially on the transport design and security. Issues and PRs are open.

Streaming IPTV blocked when VPN is turned on.

Hi,

I just was interested if someone else had this issue. I have a Gli modem and have enabled VPN on that. I then connect my TV where I have a IPTV service to the modem so the service goes through the VPN ( for more security as Im living in Germany and here IPTV is not really legal). The problem is that when I turn on the VPN the Iptv streaming stops and reconnecting tab stays on.

Does anyone know how this can be solved?
Thanks!

PS: The provider I got the IPTV from advertised it as their connection first goes through a VPN but Im a bit skeptical.

Discussion Deeper.network Is A Ponzi Scheme

They ban you for telling the truth. I bought deeper mini for $500+ including shipping.

And they still charge me monthly fees, although they heavily advertised it as free if you buy their hardware. And after confrontation they just ban you from there main

r / deepernetwork and threaten you that you cannot even bypass this ban from other accounts like they fear so much if they get exposed. They just wanted me to shed 500$ on their stuped hardware, and now they have nothing to do.

I wonder how they operate so freely without fear of repercussions or law.

Help Region leakage in Google services using AmneziaWG

I am trying to configure one AmneziaWG client for my whole network. I made a LXC in Proxmox and used it as DHCP server and launched amneziawg-go on it.

The VPN itself seems to work fine, I am able to use all the websites which are blocked in my country, the ip on browserleaks is shown correctly. The problem is that I can't access some Google services which do not work in my region due to Google's restrictions. So it seems like Google somehow knows my region even with VPN on.

If I use the same AmneziaWG config with the native app on mobile or with amneziawg-go on pc, then there is no such leakage. So it seems that something is leaking due to the LXC setup as DHCP server, but I can't figure out why and how to fix it. Please help
