Community Rule Update: AI-Generated Transcriptions Are No Longer Allowed

Hello everyone,

We want to let you know about an important change to our rule regarding AI use in r/Transcription .

What the rule used to allow:

Previously, our rules permitted the use of AI or OCR tools as long as the user disclosed their use and manually reviewed and corrected the results before posting. This was intended to allow AI as a supporting tool, not a replacement for human transcription.

What is changing:

Effective immediately, AI-generated transcriptions are no longer allowed in any form. This includes: OCR output, Handwriting recognition software, Generative AI produced transcriptions, or any other AI assisted transcriptions based primarily on machine output.

Why the change?

We feel that our community has grown to a point where we no longer need the limited assistance AI transcriptions may have once provided. r/Transcription now has a strong base of knowledgeable members who consistently offer fast, accurate, and genuinely human interpretations of hard to read text.

Any transcriptions that are clearly AI will be removed, and we encourage users to report any transcriptions that you suspect is AI.

Thank you.

- Mod Team.

Russian/Pусский Transcription Request Need help with this entry from the parish book

I'm trying to decipher the information about the death of one of my ancestors. I speak a little bit of Russian but clearly not enough. I'm particularly interested in all the dates and names in here but a full transcription / translation would be much appreciated.

What I could find out in here is that it happened on 22nd. of November 1906 or 5th. of December 1906 and I don't understand why there are two dates. I hope that there is more context in the text that explains this bit.

I would be very grateful if somebody could help me with this.

English Transcription Request Dad’s old AA book

Post image
7 Upvotes

This may be a long shot, or even the wrong subreddit to post this in.. but my dad passed away 6 years ago and when going through his belongings, I came across this Alcoholics Anonymous big book. Something deep down told me to grab it because deep down I knew that I would need it one day. Fast forward to today, I just reached over 1,000 days sober and I have went through this very same book with my sponsor when completing my 12 step work. Pardon me for being not so anonymous about that all but it is something that I am proud of. I noticed the writing on the side of the book right away and didn’t think much of it. I recently decided to try and ‘crack the code’
My dad’s name is John. From what I can make out, the middle text says NOW and the third word says JOHN
Any idea what the first word might be? I would love to figure this out.
Again, my apologies if I am posting in the wrong subreddit.
TLDR; Ended up w/ my dad’s AA big book and trying to figure out what the writing says on the side.

Thanks!!

Hi, I'm trying to read this letter but struggling with reading some of the words. It is a request for baptismal records from the High Court of Justice in Ottawa Canada, written in 1910.

Below is the transcription that I've been able to piece together. Words I couldn't decipher, or wasn't sure about, I put in quotes. Any help will be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Dear Sir,  Aug 10th 1910

Your letter has been handed to me as I have all the old parish registers. I have looked through the old Bytown registers between the years 1838 and 1843 but can "----" find "no" entry of your baptism. "Possibly" if you may have been baptized in "some ---- " parish. You did "----" leave (?) in the "unknown maybe 'town'". If you can give me the name of the minister, "I might" "----" if you require any further search you "----" send fifty four cents.  J. Bishop

English Transcription Request Help Needed to Read This Name

I've been researching my family tree for several years and have finally found something with my great-great-great-grandfather's name on it - If only I could read it!

His name is at the top of the cropped photo, and I have included the wider marriage certificate for letter-formation reference.

The couple at the bottom are my great-great-grandparents - John Kirkwood, full, bachelor, labourer, and Jane Eliza Hawthorne, full, spinster, servant, father Robert Hawthorne.

Any help deciphering the rest of their entry would also be appreciated. I've worked out they are both from the Parish of Moria, but the specific place also eludes me!

Thank you.

The other two options, in case the context helps you get into the mind of the author, are “ you will poop forever” and “ you will vomit”. Thanks!

Transcribed✔️ Help with wife's late mothers note

Post image
7 Upvotes

My wife's mother had written this note and we need some assistance trying to figure out what some things might say. She was a poetic woman, and while we think we're close, and she's good with her mother's scratch, we could use some assistance in interpretating the text!

Our best guess so far:

"Wherever in life your phase is,

??? (whatever?) astounds and amazes,

May the light of the moon make your heart swoon,

And reflect your ??? graces"

We think is close but interested in hearing what the community has to say.

I have my own transcription, but I'm uncertain about some names. So I look forward to see what you come up with.

It's from a German/Czech area in 1744. So all these documents have a mixture of German/Czech/Latin. This part of the marriages is in Czech I believe.

back again with another couple recipes from my grandmothers recipe book, which i’m turning into a proper cookbook as a secret project.

any help deciphering these two recipes would be greatly appreciated. “ginger nutters” and “bon biscuits”?

i’ve realising through this project that she doesn’t always write the instructions clearly, and sometimes there is none at all. making this a whole lot harder!

i’m aiming to post one of these morning and night to get through the lot of them. there is some i’m able to read, but when it comes to the more scribbly cursive i can only make out parts of it (can you tell i’m in my 20s, i didn’t really learn cursive at school)

English Transcription Request Mystery gift?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello! This bag mysteriously appeared on my partner's work desk. George is my nickname, so we are assuming someone has left the gift for me but we cannot make out the writing below "George".

We've just returned from overseas so it could have been sitting there for a while. Our only possible lead is that apparently a coworker who recently left the business was giving some people gifts, however the writing below is absolutely not that person's name and would be strange for her to leave something for me. Not actually confirmed that this coworker left the gift either. Any guesses would be appreciated. Thank you!

Made a brand new account just for these. I’m working on turning my nannas recipes into a book to give out as presents to my family, so i’m not able to go to them for help (it’s a surprise). There will be lots of these posts, so let’s call it a series

Would love some helping deciphering my nannas sweet treats. Both of these recipes would be appreciated, but definintly the “chocolate coconut rough”.

thanks in advance

Would someone be able to tell me what this 3rd word is? What I see is

"Obs Suende ist ???r einerlei"

It's handwritten by a Luxembourger, my Grandfather, around the early 1900s.

English Transcription Request Can anyone decipher this comment that one of our panelists left on our paper?

Thumbnail

Hello there, fellow users! First time posting here, and I need help in deciphering this comment...

Context: On October 17 of this year, we had our 2nd and final Capstone Defense. After getting grilled on our defense concluded, the 3 copies of our manuscripts that we sent to the panelist left comments on revising... And just today, we got it back so that we can work on revising the whole paper.

There was one particular comment that we don't know, one of our groupmates said "Agrued", I said "Hdruel" (it's quite confusing, honestly.) I also attached a second photo of it for a closer look.

I hope you could help us in deciphering (and especially before the end of October 21, where we'll have to finalize most of our stuff before bookbinding it.)

Anyways, have a good day ahead, fellow users!
