I think this is a common sci-fi trope. The UNSC in Halo is a bit of a fascist authoritarian government.

I believe also that Gears of War has something like this too between the CoG and UIR

yeh, other than the Spartan program their standard ROP for dissident colonies before the Human-Covenant war was to "nuke em til they glow". Don't forget ONI too! basically the amalgam of CIA and Mossad's reach/oversight, with the fear level of KGB, NKVD, and Stasi combined.

The Spartan program itself isn't exactly the most moral of programs either.

Literally kidnapping children and turning the ones that survived into weapons and all.

yup, for anyone who didn't know, the Spartan program was originally designed to turn indoctrinated, genetically enhanced child soldiers into super assassins… and presumably to "clean up" the other dirty works by the UNSC-ONI, eesh

Not to mention, all the kidnapped kids were from colonies, none from Earth. The plan was for Spartans to be used against the colonies. Kidnaps kids from colonies, to unknowingly fight their homes and families.

Also, these children were the genetic cream of the crop, so likely from successful and influential families. This means future prodigies in athletics and sciences

Spartan 2 program at least, 3 is slightly a bit more ethical, and 4 is fine, since its all volunteering adults.

Except nuking colonies wasn't the standard response for rebelling colonies.

That was only Far isle and rest of the time conventional COIN ops.

They did that exactly once, and it was cooked by ONI alone.

That... isn't what Sisko did at all?

He committed a war crime against a group of terrorists attacking Starfleet ships and trying to start a war between the Federation and the Cardassians, but did so in a way that:

  1. Allowed all of the victims plenty of time to escape safely even after the attack.
  2. Mirrored an attack they themselves had used in such a way as to make it possible for the two groups to switch planets
  3. Stopped a threat of the repeat of that tactic, and so prevented more war crimes

It's like the ideal justification for a war crime - the sort that could never occur in reality.

He certainly didn't nuke 'em till they glow.
