Hated Tropes (Hated)changing somenthing to be more "progressive" ends up being a bad thing

Now to be clear,i am not one of these "anti-woke" losers that complain some people exist, and i am also not the type to complain about changing somenthing in a new version or adaptation, however there are cases where it did ended up being a bad idea.

-In the anime of Cowboy Bebop there is the character Gren, despite being short lived the character is very memorable specially thanks to his tragic story.Basically his story was that he was a soldier from the titan war who was a great friend with Vicious(the main bad guy)after the war he was emprisioned thanks to Vicious who testified against him and he was forced to take a experimental drug that caused him hormonal problems, giving him a feminine appearence and even breasts.

In the Netflix live action, for some reasons they decided Gren was going to be non-binary,which wouldn't be a problem(some people believe he was gay in the anime)if it wasn't for the fact that they also removed all the nuances and complexities that made the character memorable and interesting, instead of a tragic war veteran that was betrayed and had his body changed against his will,Gren is just kinda there.

-The original Rugrats cartoon had the couple Betty and Howard,Betty was a big and masculine woman while Howard was a smaller and nervous man,it was a genuine interesting relationship that stood out from the other couples who were the standard straight couple.

In the new series however they replaced Howard with a woman named Trish, two things, first off why? What was the problem with having a woman being the stronger in a straight relationship?Second why does Hollywood seem to think that every tomboy or masculine woman is a lesbian?

Overall not the worst thing but it is jarring that they had a gender reverse roled that was progressive and decided that wasn't enough.

-Oh man, this one pisses me off the most so i am gonna have to break it down

So back in the late 80s and 90s there was this anime called Saint Seiya also knows as Knights of the zodiac,it tells the story of knights who fight for the Goddess Athena to protect earth, being divided in the golden, silver and bronze knights, the anime was a huge hit in latin america and Europe and while it floped in the US it still has a loyal fanbase.

Being a fan myself i can't recommend it enough, now granted the story does have a fair share of flaws, and that's because the author was honestly just making stuff up as he went along(also a lot of side characters are poorly used or even forgotten about)still it is a great story you should check out

But then a couple of years back Netflix got the rights and decided to a 3D reboot,in this reboot they decided to make the story more "american" to try to bring more american viewers, now i could go on and on a big rant about how that was a bad idea and the execution was so terrible that it made me want to strangle someone but this post is about one specific change.

So Saint Seiya has five main characters, those are Pegasus Seiya,Dragon Shiryu,Cygnus Hyoga,Phoenix Ikki and finally Andromeda Shun.

While the other four characters were the standard masculine and brute male characters who were always ready to throw punches,Shun was smaller, more sensitive and even feminine looking,a pacifist who didn't liked fighting, but don't mistake that for weakness because Shun was loyal to his friends and was extremely powerful.

Then Netflix decided to change Shun into a girl named Shaun.

So wait, you have a male character who goes against every male stereotype and you turn him into just another generic female character?

When asked about it,the showrunner Eugene Son said he made that change because there was no girl in the group and having a all boys group wouldn't be acceptable nowadays

First off that's not true because Athena was also part of the main cast, yeah she wasn't the fighting type but she still helped quite a lot in the story even saving the knights on several occasions, second if you wanted to add a girl to the main group why not use Marin or Shaina?Hell,if you were going to change the story anyway why not turn Seiya sister into a knight?

Thankfully this monstrosity was cancelled(so much for trying to bring more fans)

The Discworld show butchered Cheery Littlebottom and her gender identity.

In Discworld, dwarfs basically have one gender. They're buried under so much beard and mining equipment that gender is an afterthought. It's was a fun quirk of the species that shows how utilitarian they are. Later stories show they are also extremely conservative and traditional. Utilitarian gender falls under that. There's only one outward gender and dwarfs being feminine is just weird and new. The Discworld series progresses techa and social changes very fast and young darwfs coming to the city to do things different is part of that.

Enter Cheery Littlebottom, a female dwarf. Throughout the series she emulates some behavior from the other women. She becomes more feminine and even becomes a bit of an icon for other female dwarfs emulate. It's important to point out her story is about about a "female dwarf" not just a female. She learns what things she wants to keep and what to change. Yes she buts heads witht he conservatives but she also learns to push back on the liberals that want to use her and push their idea of feminity on her. She keeps her beard and only wears frilly dresses if she wants too.

Then the Discworld show came around. It missed the point in just about everyway. It's took very little from the books and threw away even more. Now cheery is just a trans dude. Not a dwarf, they're tall and beardless. Their entire personality was traded for generic edgy hacker type. None of the struggles cheery went through remained. It felt like the producers just said "make them a dude in drag, that's enough" then moves on.

Oh no. Since that show doesn't exist, I didn't realize how dirty they did Cheery.

Honestly, the entire show fits in here.

It tried to brand itself as "Discworld but woke" and ignored the fact that STP was progressive as hell. It came across as a conservative's imitation of a social justice warrior's fantasy.

The Fifth Elephant is a story about conservatives and racial purists trying to overturn a fair election because they don't want the progressive candidate to win. It's also the book where most of Cheery's gender story arc occurs.

That book came out in the 90s!

sir Terry didnt even write cherry about trans people. he wrote a standard like, overcoming patriarchy story.  and when trans fans praised it he accepted that and then wrote monstrous regiment. which while not using modern words, narratively, has a canon trans character. (in a play on women passing as men to join the military. theres a character whose birth gender is revealed, but then characters /and/ narrative voice continue to ignore it when they express a preference. trying to not spoiler things)

Fair enough, but you can't blame people for associating Cherry with trans topics considering her arc boils down to someone choosing a gender identity, especially one that society tells them that they shouldn't have.

It's just that it's an interesting inversion because normally that would mean someone choosing an identity that they weren't assigned to at birth, but in this case, it is their birth gender they're choosing, and society is telling them they must have the other one.

further realization i only had last year: its not stated that the dwarfish women are all of the female sex. its stated that dwarves keep their sex private.

its quite possibly that there are trans dwarf women  in addition to dwarf women who are female.

its not exactly intended and thats why it does get kinda weird. to the dwarves, "women" is... moslty a foriegn cultural concept.  but the general ideas of patriarchy , conservatives,  verses a younger generation finding a much more complex world fits in both trans, feminist ways.

but there also is a canon trans character in the series, because STP was that much of an ally.

Sir Pterry was one of the last remaining Grand Wizards of fantasy.

Only Michael Moorcock still clings to life.

That's awful. Genuinely awful. I didn't know there was a show, but that... what a way to misread intersectionality (if they were looking to be progressive). They did her so dirty.

Edit: trans man or trans woman? You said "dude," and it's a bit unclear.

u/VanillaRadonNukaCola 7d ago

She's a trans woman in the show.

u/Ae3qe27u 7d ago

Gotcha, thank you.

To be fair, I haven't watched the show and just repeating common criticisms.

But from what I understand, they just made the character trans. Most magical races including dwarves were eliminated from the show, so Cheri is just now a trans man. Which in itself is also kind of screwy. Cheerys story was about a woman embracing and defining her femininity in a world that wants her to stay a man. This is literally the exact opposite.

9

u/VanillaRadonNukaCola 7d ago

The character is a trans woman, not a trans man.

Perhaps the slight is unintended, but your comments are coming off at best ignorant or at worst hateful.

The character is no longer a dwarf, sure.  But the essence of the character does follow similar themes, in that she is a feminine character in a culture that wants her to stay a man.

So no, not the exact opposite.

4

u/Ae3qe27u 7d ago

Wait, what? They got rid of magical races? I might need you to explain that for me.

1

u/ImportantQuestions10 7d ago

I'm not sure to what degree, but they pretty much turned the setting into a bunch of humans living in a pseudo-fantasy cyber steampunk setting. Trolls exist, but as far as I know, they got rid of any race that would require onscreen characters to not be played by standard humans.

3

u/PapayaTheSailorMan 7d ago

Why the fuck did they even base the show off of Discworld, then?

2

u/Disastrous-Entity-46 7d ago

i am assuming some sort of budgeting /scheduling issues. like they went all in on settings but then didnt want the time and budget for characters that would ne frequently on screen

its a hot mess in several ways. i actually like some of the changes they made, i understand some of them. but on the whole its.... not very good.

one of those things that ends up being worse for everyone. too different from the books to please fans, but too steeped in the books to feel like it would be accessible to non-fans.

the watch was written as a shity gothem style batman show, but for some reason they stamped Disc-world onto it.

another commenter in this thread said she was a human trans woman in the show and based on appearances, i think that commenter was right and you're wrong. as in, the character in that screenshot is not "a dude in drag" or a "trans dude". trans women (irl humans) are not "dudes in drag". and trans dudes are dudes, the noun after trans refers to what someone actually is and how you should refer to them, so while conservatives might think a "trans man" is a "man" (assigned male at birth) who identifies as a woman, the type of person they're thinking of is a trans woman and should be referred to as "she/her" and not "he/him/they/them"

just letting you know so you, and others, won't refer to any actual trans woman (instead of fictional characters) in that way, since it's hurtful.

Sibling I felt the spirit of Detritus and all those who fought alongside Vines atop the train when I read "butchered Cheery". May the summoning dark haunt their very shadows and a strongly written letter from Captain Carrot follow swiftly after it.

... There was a Discworld show? About the city watch at that?! I had NO idea.

Pretty glad I missed it. I can't imagine getting incredibly excited about this show, only to be disappointed. At least there's just one season?

3

u/ImportantQuestions10 7d ago

It's easily got to be one of the worst performing BBC shows of all time. I don't think it even finished the season before it was taken off air.

3

u/PumPumpuli 7d ago

I do feel sad that we don't have any big, hugely popular adaptions of Pratchett's work. Then again his books are good as they are, so maybe we don't really need his stories told in any other form.

3

u/Hetakuoni 7d ago

I liked Hogswatch, but that was a Death and the Wizards book.

2

u/ImportantQuestions10 7d ago

I'm conflicted because I really want Discworld to be more popular and well-known, and it needs film and TV adaptations for that. But so much of British humor like Terry Pratchett or Hitchhiker's Guide is heavily reliant on the narrator just dithering, and it's pretty hard to translate that to video.

1

u/atomfullerene 7d ago

The Hogfather was pretty good, but my actual favorite was the animated version of Soul Music. Sure, the animation wasn't the fanciest, but it was fun.

1

u/aNiceTribe 7d ago

It’s weird because his books would be supremely adaptable as far as fantasy goes. Many stories with like. One? Special effect. And once you have costuming and some sets you are basically fine.

But the prime candidate for adapting them would be the BBC and can you imagine that tower of Mordor of terfs doing something like a Monstrous Regiment adaptation.

1

u/Hetakuoni 7d ago

Which is wild because cheery became constable Igor’s assistant/apprentice in the morgue, not an analog to A E Pessimal’s job.

1

u/Background-Cake-1300 7d ago

That show sucked entirely

1

u/CenturyEggsAndRice 7d ago

Oh, that's really disappointing.

I haven't seen the show but wanted to. Do they do ANYTHING right, or should I skip it entirely?

2

u/ImportantQuestions10 7d ago

I mean, you do you and you can always watch it as just an interesting experiment, but universal hatred kind of speaks for itself on this one

2

u/CenturyEggsAndRice 7d ago

Yeah, I asked before I read more people's opinions. I haven't seen anyone say something they liked about it YET.

Maybe I'll check it out sometime when I'm high and wanna hate watch something. But I'm not gonna seek it out or anything.

1

u/JudithSlayHolofernes 7d ago

I didn’t even realize they’d made a discworld show and I guess I’ll keep pretending I never did 💁‍♀️

1

u/TR_Pix 7d ago

Theres a Discworld show?

1

u/Powerful-Platform423 6d ago

Cheery’s story was so much more than appearance or gender labels it was about finding her own identity while challenging both tradition and expectations. It’s a shame when an adaptation loses the nuance that made a character so memorable in the first place.

1

u/Pension_Pale 6d ago

I was unaware of this show, but being a massive Discworld fan, I'm actually glad I didn't know about this show, because that sounds horrible. The last thing I want is to see Terry Pratchetts work be horribly butchered

0

u/Doji_mofo 7d ago

Yeah, I agree. Discworld dwarves really need a beard.

It also stripped a bunch of stuff from Carrot's character. Because being six foot and clean shaven is just what dwarves look like, apparently, so he's just a normal dwarf.

1

u/Glitchy-Mech 6d ago

I do think that in discussing cultural depictions of transfeminity we can eschew the beard. Its not really a significant element of her character so much as a superfluous detail

0

u/Doji_mofo 5d ago

For roundworld stuff, sure.

For the discworld, all the dwarves (except Carrot) have beards. All of them. There's the occasional comment that lady dwarves have nicer beards than the lads.

At no point does Cheery, or any of the other dwarves, cut off her beard. Or even suggest it.

When a human is modelling dwarf fashion, how do they make her look like a dwarf? A beard.

Dwarf beards are not gendered.

Hence why the Cheery character in the Watch is just odd. There's just nothing communicating dwarf about her, and she seems to be obviously trans and no-one minds.

1

u/Glitchy-Mech 5d ago

I know this is going to be a significant shock for you but discworld is not real. I care far more about the standards and expectations of the real world than I do about one that’s made up. Beards are in fact gendered
