Or he still thinks hes invincible. I think every young guy with a bit of athleticism always has way too much confidence until they get knocked on their ass and humbled.
Im not even joking one bit, my ass got Gout from eating too much tuna and it humbled me hard af. Always been athletic, active and felt invincible cuz things like heights, speed and motion dont make me sick and i thought i could eat whatever and then i got in my 30ās and got humbled by tuna. I still do stupid shit but i eat a lot better lol
19
u/CagedParchment 1d ago
Damn dude, how much tuna were you eating?!

u/ders89 1d ago edited 1d ago
I had a tuna sandwich every day before work or during work from 7-11. I dont like using the bathroom at work and it was like a small enough sandwich to get me by and not need to go until i get home.
The issue was i took a week off, still got my sandwich but then i had the starkist tuna snack packs with the crackers 2 days in a row and i think those concentrated amounts just sent me over the edge.
My mom gets gout from shrimp so i think i was just predisposed and living on the cusp of getting it for a while and the additional amounts did me in.
Really wasnt that much but it was consistent :/.
I fell off my skateboard going down a hill and got severe road rash on my elbows and knees and the showers i had to take post fall were a cake walk compared to Gout

u/Lomotograph 1d ago
Shiiiiiiit. To get gout, he'd have to be eating a lot of fish each day.
Like we're talking something to the tune a 1-2lbs per day.
2
u/ders89 1d ago
Nah i actually just had it so consistently. Every day a sandwich. The issue was i added the starkist tuna snack packs with the crackers and i had it twice in a row with a tuna sandwich and i think thats what set me over the edge.
My mom gets Gout from shrimp so i think the seafood just does numbers on us.

u/Lomotograph 1d ago
Makes sense. If you eat that much fish, then your diet does need a tune-up.
2
u/UntamedAnomaly 23h ago
You are lucky you didn't get mercury poisoning on top of that from eating that much tuna, tuna has high levels of mercury in it, people eat way more of it than they really should eating. Sardines and other small fish are lower on the food chain, so are safer to eat.
2
u/ders89 19h ago
I actually had no idea⦠im glad Gout got me at this point. Some people lean on red meat, some people lean on deep fried, but i leaned on tuna to get me through the day. Just kinda became part of my routine. Never really considered the health disasters that came with it. Once you get older than 30, life really finds a way to bring you back to reality :/

Yuppppp lived in Houston for 10 years and immediately recognized that stretch of highway. I remember once seeing an RC car speeding up 59 from Sugarland.

Seems dumb, but honestly feels barely any less safe than a motorcycle, and at least this dude is wearing a helmet lol. (In my state helmets are not required to ride a motorcycle)

u/gargoyle30 1d ago
I seriously doubt he can turn or stop nearly as fast as a motorcycle

With brakes.
22
u/JonnyLay 1d ago
I think they don't actually have brakes. It uses the motors for regenerative braking. I think actual brakes would fling you off the front.
10
u/CartsOfDarkness 1d ago
You can "brake" surprisingly quickly on EUCs, that being said I ride mine at like 25 mph tops so obviously a different story lol. You just lean back though. Quick Google search says it's about 13-17 car lengths to go from 60 mph to 0 (without crashing lol).
9
u/JonnyLay 1d ago
Yep, which is almost twice the distance a motorcycle takes. And a motorcycle is already worse than cars.

Helmet, gloves and potentially a motorcycle hoodie, shirt or baselayer. I would want to see better footwear is my only criticism. Also I imagine the stopping distance on a one wheel is significantly greater than a bike.
14
u/adoodle83 1d ago
with or without the launching feature?
iād assume heavy braking on these would be quite literally hurling you forward, but without the luxury of a seat belt to keep your restrained.
8
u/AnachronisticPenguin 1d ago
I doubt it but if the thing is engineered well the gyroscope can shift the tilt so that the seat is angled backward during heavy breaking.
10
u/johnnielittleshoes 1d ago
You literally need to lean backwards to break, so the tilt is not the problem. In my own unfortunate experiences, breaking hard introduces a whole lot of wiggling which is really hard to control, and the two times I crashed I actually fell backwards with the unicycle moving forward from under me (scraped lower back and elbows). Of course hitting a curb or a sudden stop would launch you forward instead.
8
u/Sharkytrs 1d ago
yeah braking is not easy on those, you lean back to brake, the act of it pushes you forward, its rather jarring and difficult.
a motor bike could stop on a penny in comparison
2
u/Ithrazel 1d ago
You break, as you accelerate, with the controller (he is holding it)
1
u/ToastedWaffleMan 1d ago
Yeah no, there is no controller. It's all controlled by his weight distribution

u/TheJeep25 1d ago
Motorcycle are designed to go at high speed way above the highway limits. Motorcycle are safe if you ride them with your head. Just go take your license and ride one instead of spouting nonsense about something you never tried. This monowheel isn't designed to do that kind of speed. It's incredibly dumb.
4
u/ssxhoell1 1d ago
Yeah this little bullshit is meant to go like 10 miles an hour through a neighborhood at most. This is absolutely ridiculous and I'm surprised there's not a film crew following him because why would you do this without any incentive to do it like literally just for the fuck of it š
5
u/CartsOfDarkness 1d ago
Yeah this little bullshit is meant to go like 10 miles an hour through a neighborhood at most
Alright but now you guys are spouting nonsense about something you never tried.. Dude in the video is an idiot but you clearly know nothing about EUCs if you think they should only go 10 mph max in a neighborhood lol, some real "my hobby is better than yours!" Energy.

As an electrician: if it's 3000 watts that's what we need to know to figure its top speed.
The fact that it's 90v not 30v is a design choice that just means you saved weight on the conductors and stuff not having to be sized for greater amps.
It would be interesting to see how much larger the setup would have to be to have the same power at 30v.
I think it's cool you do these things! We need fun!
1
u/McCrackenYouUp 1d ago
10 MPH is practically not moving. 20-30 MPH is the sweet spot with these kinds of things.
Still dangerous, but a hell of a lot less so that 75 on the highway.

>In my state helmets are not required to ride a motorcycle
To those who disagree, that's a pretty good rule imo. It's pretty hard to get a helmet to ride a motorcycle, let alone force them to ride one, so we mostly just put them on our heads

Other than "a unicycle" could anyone tell me what he's riding?
5
u/Evolatic 1d ago
I don't know the specific model he's riding but he's on an Electric Unicycle (EUC). Here's an example of one that'll do 75Mph. I ride an electric skateboard and I stay around 20Mph. These things scare me but a guy I ride with (who's ridden all the electric things) tells me that the EUC is the most stable thing he's ridden between scooters, skateboards, and one wheels. I'll stick to 20 Mph.

I never even thought of that. Just one bouncing bolt that fell off somebody 's Rusty old truck and he's got a new hole in his body.
1
u/donfuria 1d ago
I donāt disagree with the sentiment but those things have great suspension and balance and riders go up flights of stairs while standing up. It defies intuition but they seem to be significantly safer than electric scooters at least.

Doesn't look anymore dangerous then a motorcycle...he needs better protective gear tho
5
u/apathy-sofa 1d ago
Braking doesn't operate the same way, nor well. It pitches the rider forwards. Imagine riding a motorcycle (or bicycle) and you can only use your front brake.Ā
I agree with you up until the brake aspect though.Ā

u/jaxxxtraw 1d ago
I don't know man, the front end of a bike is going to block/deflect a lot of shit out of the way, especially with a fairing. A half-inch branch out of the back of a truck could ruin your day on this thing.

u/acjadhav 1d ago
One wheel, two wheels, it's the same, I'd do it, but first I'll have to learn to ride this

How about you pay attention to the road you're driving on and stop harassing the crazy man on the monocycle.
3
u/bjsqrl 1d ago
Passenger is filming. Obviously, as they turned the camera toward the driver. Sigh...
1
u/pete1729 12h ago
The driver. I'm talking about the driver driving the car toward the man on the monocycle. Duh. I swear sometimes the stupidity on reddit is breathtaking.
2
u/bjsqrl 6h ago
As the monocycle driver himself changed lanes moving toward the car, and the car constantly remained in the same lane, I find your statement about the stupidity found on Reddit quite accurate.
1
u/pete1729 2h ago
Shit. I Think you're right. I stand corrected. I only watched it once due to the anxiety I felt from seeing it. Monocycle dude is passing people on the right.
-1
u/iSteve 1d ago
Actually no more dangerous than a motorcycle.
1
u/spoonballoon13 18h ago
Not even close. A motorcycle is stable in motion because of the second wheel. A motorcycle has its center of gravity between two, widely spaced, points of contact. A rider, balanced on a single wheel is entirely at the mercy of the corrective balancing of the motor. If the motor dies or the rider leans far enough that the motor cannot effectively accelerate to correct it, Newtonās first law applies and you are hitting the ground immediately.
1
u/whichwolfufeed 1d ago
It's nowhere near as stable as a two wheel motorcycle, so in that regard it's more dangerous. However, if you crash at high speed on either then yes they are pretty much equal, either way you're hamburger meat.
