French here, this isn't the shop of the man in the photo. The guy in the photo works at a Micromania, basically the French equivalent of Gamestop, and his is located in Nice. This video comes from an anonymous shop that was looted, but according to the person who uploaded it to X, it's in Paris.
It's probably a store in the République district of Paris, one of the areas that was looted the most because it's known for its video game shops (including rare consoles and games), anime shops, and TTCG stores.
Gamers and anime fans like me hate the looters because this is THE Parisian neighborhood that has been home to "geek" culture since the early 90s, and because of these jerks, most of them are sure to close. For exemple, Manga Story, a shop that's been there for decades, won't reopen, or in any case, not the Paris store according to the manager who announced that there are 500 to 600,000 euros worth of thefts.

u/chamarance 4h ago
Yeah it's so sad... I'm parisian and I used to live around here, this really sucks. I loved this area.

Kind of a weird thing to be happening in a supposedly civilised society. What's up with that?

I'm curious, and you don't have to answer if you don't want to: will this affect how you vote in the next election?
8
u/Balibaleau 3h ago
I don't believe in politicians, so I'm not sure that will change my desire to vote blank but it will mostly depend on which right-wing or left-wing assholes make it to the second round. Let's just say it's going to be a mess if it's RN vs LFI because no matter who wins it's going to be chaos.

Who even pays for all these losses, insurance?
3
u/FPA-Trogdor 2h ago
Sometimes yes, often no not fully. But insurance can’t replace irreplaceable inventory, and often won’t pay you actual market value on something that was destroyed. And you can’t reopen your store, and why would you if it will just be burnt down again?

Scum of the earth. They deserve to have the knowledge that the merch they took of cute anime girls, will be watching them for the rest of their life. With those eyes full of disgust. Im sure none of those characters they so like would ever support this.

the work of his life, he said. you only got one life, right, wonder if he will be able to rebuild. wonder about other businesses too. what tact will they take when they see those looters in their business if they reopen. "its all in the past" ? they'll be ptsd on their own time? they'll move where they can't be reached by foot by those guys?
33
u/MarcCouillard 4h ago
he probably will NOT be able to rebuild, it took him 29 yrs to get to where he was and acquire all the things he had, collectables and whatnot, his insurance probably won't cover even half of what he lost, so yeah, he's basically fucked and would have to start all over again

Those specialist shops are in the city centers. The looters come from certain suburbs. They aren't looting on their neighborhood.
So they won't just stroll by after / if the shops reopen.
You have 3 things:
Demonstration, happen regularly in France. Typically no violence.
Rioters that exploit the anonymity of the demonstration to attack the police and loot, just after the demonstration. Sadly it happen frequently
And riots when a suspect is killed by the police. Happened in 2005 and 2023. Usually quite violent.
The high school protests have been rather violent since the start (bins on fire, weaponizing fireworks). And the street demonstrations have had a unusual amount of rioters. And unusual violence (burning down a town house etc).

As tragic as the looting itself is the worst part for me was that they attacked him too with that kick, disgusting actions by disgusting people
47
u/BeginningDisaster114 4h ago
If anything it just proved how much more of a man he is. None of them dared to attack him while he was facing them despite him being completly outnumbered, they could only suckerpunch him cause they have no balls or honor

u/indicator_enthusiast 4h ago
Saw that, it's bad enough to attack him and his store, but kicking him while his back is turned is just pathetic. You greatly outnumbered him and still needed him to be distracted to attack, how much of a coward can you be.
13
u/KezaGatame 3h ago
completely disgusting, you then see the people just laughing, and the last guy that throws the can at him at the end like he's mad about something the victim did...

Those looters aren’t protesters. They’re opportunists, scum of the earth
26
u/Potential-View-5827 2h ago
Absolutely and the man explained it himself in the video. The protest happened peacefully and he supports the protesters. The riot and looting took place after (with a handful of people casing the joint earlier) and was not politically motivated. Just scumbags taking advantage to steal and destroy for their own gain or "fun". 10/10 recommend watching this man's interview if you speak French. It's infuriating to hear what happened but he's even more awesome than he looks.
17
u/PaperDistribution 3h ago
I wouldn't be surprised if many of the looters don't even know what the protest is about

u/CatgirlTheKat 3h ago
As a protestor, I wholly agree.
Those people have nothing to do with us and we all despise that their greed has tainted our movement's reputation.
We don't want breakers or thieves in our ranks, only people who genuinely want to make a positive change.
2
u/TerribleCat9963 3h ago
Exactly. That’s all I was trying to say.
People who genuinely care about a cause shouldn’t have to answer for opportunists who show up just to steal, destroy stuff, or hurt people. If anything, those people do more damage to the movement than anyone criticizing it from the outside.
Appreciate you saying this.2
u/CatgirlTheKat 2h ago
Yess... This whole thing feels pretty distressing because I always know that all of these actions will only encourage people to condone the cops taking away our limbs and potentially our lives...
I've made so many wonderful friends at uni, and a lot of them practice peaceful protest, and if something had to happen to them, I don't know if I could take it... With that in mind, it kind of makes me want to cry when I hear about people impersonating our movement and making us seem like a threat to be repressed even more harshly...
Me and some of my friends are ostensibly sueer as well, so even at the most peaceful of times, we kind of fear being shot by cops, so now that so many people are stupidly adding fuel to the fire by ridiculing our organizations, that worry has started to evolve into genuine anxiety...
2
u/TerribleCat9963 2h ago
I get where you’re coming from. Once people start using chaos or violence as an excuse to paint an entire movement as dangerous, the people who are actually showing up peacefully are the ones who end up carrying the consequences. I can’t pretend to know exactly what that fear feels like for you, but I can understand why seeing opportunists make things worse would be genuinely upsetting. You and your friends shouldn’t have to feel like you’re being judged by the actions of people who don’t represent what you’re actually there for.
Stay safe out there.2

u/Reasonable_Garden741 1h ago

The same thing happened in my city like 6 years ago. It started off as a small protest, then it became The Purge, and nearly every business was looted and shit was on fire everywhere. The cops were gassing everyone just for being downtown. I'm pretty sure that people drove in from other cities and towns just to fuck our shit up

u/NefariousnessKind634 4h ago

Interview came out recently from the man (Pierre is his name).
"At no point did I hear any political demands. There were many insults, a lot of contempt, a lot of laughter. This was pure pleasure in destruction."
5
u/Potential-View-5827 1h ago edited 1h ago
I think it's important to note that this quote was during a part of the interview where he expressed his sympathy for the protesters. He explained that the protest happened earlier in the day and was peaceful. Then after it was over, the rioters and looters came. These formed a different group and weren't politically motivated. Just wanted to steal and destroy stuff. 10/10 recommend watching this man's interview if you speak French. It's infuriating to hear what happened but he's even more awesome than he looks.
9
u/CatgirlTheKat 3h ago
Yes, those thieves and breaker are so far removed from our movement it almost feels like they were specifically hired to decrease our cause's credibility... However, it is more likely that they just thirdt for crime and actively use us as a scapegoat to justify their acts.

I was a older teen during the LA riots of 92. Distinctly remember Korean's on rooftops protecting their livelyhoods from those looting and burning down homes and stores.
I know that France has a very different society, but I feel bad for thise small business owners who will never recover from this.
5
u/Inevitable-Ad-7507 4h ago
Mexican kids at my school bragged about all the loot they took home. Rooftop Koreans were defending their stores with assault rifles because the police didn’t want to touch it. They had limited resources and protected Beverly Hills. It was an ugly time in our history.
2
u/The_Lich_King__ 5h ago
There are so many people taking the mick out of the left-wing activist lady whose store was looted by a group of men. She protested their invasion of her store, pointing out how her political beliefs were in favour of these people, but they shoved her aside, mocked her, and apparently also spat on and trampled her.
People seem to have lost the ability to empathise with people of opposing beliefs.

Hmm im for protests i think its a key part of democracies.
I dont think looting and destroying your neighborhoods makes sense.
But wile i do not agree whit it i can see why some folks could argue that looting big chains makes sense.
But to rob a dude whit a anime shop? That not like some big multinational evil cooperation thats just some poor dudes livelihood, and im betting likely not a super profitebal one.
16
u/Cyrano_Conrad 2h ago
There is an interview of the guy in the picture.
He said the majority of the protestors just crossed the street peacefully. It was only after the procession had passed that looters appeared alongside the scumbags who kicked him in the back while he was getting back to his shop.
This is a common account given by several shop owners whose shops were looted and vandalised that day. The police were busy firing tear gas at peaceful demonstrators whilst the real scum were looting the shops
Some police guards where stationed at a chocolatier owned by the first lady’s family though.
Edit : spelling mistakes, EN is not my native language.

Yeah its messed up they jumped the guy and he couldn't defend the store anymore and they ran in and robbed him of his life work.
I saw a video today of a small mom and pop grocery store owner in France that the same thing happend to and hes asking the people how does this fix your issues with the goverment. (Said alot different but same thing basicaly.) He was heart broken and said he was behind on his insurance payment and that none of the looting would be covered. It was really sad to watch.
Thats not what protesting against your goverment is about.

Protests, in their final form, is really about showing what happens when everyone stops playing by the rules, in a situation where the ruling class has either stopped playing by the rules or has skewed the rules too much in their favor.
This is after all the protests where we do things peacefully.
8
u/D_Dubb_ 3h ago
That’s because these are riots not protests. Riots and protests can arise from very similar circumstances but they are very different. Protests are organized, peaceful, and are typically calling for a change or working towards a goal. Riots are just angry and/or opportunistic people taking out their frustrations on anything and anyone in proximity. The Republicans in America intentionally conflate the terms to undermine protesters here, but the two things are very different.
