Yes. If I know I'm gonna buy the game anyway, why not have it preloaded and ready to go day 1? Nobody is thinking they're gonna run out, it's for convenience. Stupid ass argument.

u/InternalDue1506 4h ago
Agreed. If I’m pre ordering a game digitally, its because it’s a game I’ve been excitedly watching for a while and made my mind that I’m gonna wanna play it asap. No different from pre ordering and picking up a physical game (though with less steps)

What about steam sales
1
u/hitemlow 29m ago
The publisher cutting off Steam sales is why a ton of people pre-ordered Metro Exodus. If you didn't have it pre-ordered before Jan 28th, 2019, you couldn't play it on Steam when it released on Feb 15th, 2019 as the publisher went Epic-exclusive for a year. So you had to buy it on Epic or wait until it released on Steam Feb 15th, 2020!
It was such a big deal that Steam actually changed the developer TOS to stop that shit from happening again.

u/FanBladeFleshlight 4h ago
What about them? I only ever care about those when it comes to games I was on the fence about, of if something is so cheap that I don't care about potentially wasting like $5.
12
u/Alexathequeer 5h ago
I preordered Civilization V. Because I wanted to support developers. Testing and polishing software costs a lot of money, so monthes before release maybe hard time for the team. If they are making great games I want to give them some money when they needs it the most.
Early access is a fine option too, but sometimes it will not work.

u/Techno_Core 5h ago
Worse than that: You're literally paying the highest price for the smallest and buggiest version of the game.

I stopped playing video games almost 10 years ago when I was having my first kid. Now he is 9 and I am starting to get back into video games and introducing him to video games. Having a massive back catalog of amazing games I have never played has been great. So far I have played Red Dead Redemption 2 and now I’m playing God Of War. After that I got Witcher 3 which will be my next game.

That's my biggest gripe with modern AAA games.
It's very rare to find a finished game at launch. It usually takes a year to get major bugs out of the way. They add a bunch of paid DLC for content that should be in the base game.
I just wait a year or two before I buy a AAA game now. It's cheaper and gives me a chance to see if they actually finish a damn game without a hundred DLCs to buy.
1
u/TheGreatBeldezar 5h ago
Or they completely end up changing the game and just force you to play the new version.

I think another problem it's a lot of people buy the game when it comes out and then sell it and in the 2nd hand market you can get it cheaper and a lot of times you could get a game cheaper in the shop than directly on Ps.
Now they will have much less incentive to drop the prices, the last few games i was aldready feeling the prices took longer to go down but now they will maintain for longer, since shops have a bigger incentive to reduce price to get rid of the inventory with digital they won't have that problem and they probably gonna maintain the prices for a very long time and a lot of people depended on the 2nd hand market gaming truly became expensive I think a lot will have to turn somewhere else.
2
u/T-sigma 5h ago
I mean… it’s the same price if you’re going to get it at release anyways.
I’m all for patient gamers, but no need to mislead and say someone planning to buy it Day 1 is paying less than the person buying it Day -100
-2
u/Techno_Core 5h ago
The price goes down. Bugs get fixed. Content gets added. Buying at launch is buying the smallest buggiest version of the game.
3
u/T-sigma 5h ago
Once again, I have nothing against people being patient. That doesn't mean you get to argue there's nothing fun or interesting about experiencing the game at the same time as the rest of the world.
People pay for what they value. When it's a game I can play alongside friends, it's worth it to buy Day 1.
-2
u/Techno_Core 5h ago
I didn't say any of that. I didn't argue any of that. I stated factually that pre-ordering means you're paying the highest price for the smallest and buggiest version of the game.
4
u/T-sigma 4h ago
And I say you’re ruining the experience of gaming and getting the least value for your dollar!
Since we’re not here to discuss, figured I’d go all out and state facts.
1
u/Techno_Core 4h ago
Well, what you're saying is an opinion. I'm stating a fact. Also, how does getting the full game, patched, possibly modded, and all DLC included for around 20-40% less than the cost of the game at launch give me less value for my dollar? Now you're just not making any sense.
2
u/T-sigma 4h ago
Because value exists beyond tangible dollars and cents.
You are “factual”, but so am I. I think you get less value (for some games) by waiting. Being able to discuss the story and gameplay, both IRL and online, is part of the value you get in playing it on release.
1
u/Techno_Core 4h ago
But you pegged the value to the dollar. That's just not the case. If you get more value paying the highest price for the smallest buggiest version of the game at launch because of other intangibles, great, no one is stopping you. I'm not trying to talk you out of it. But you're still paying the highest price for the smallest buggiest version of the game. Instead of trying to argue that's not the case just say you don't care that is the case because you get other value from playing at launch.
1
u/T-sigma 3h ago
I’m just making the point that yours is also an opinion. You are the one pegging value to the dollar, not me.
→ More replies-1
u/SvenLorenz 4h ago
You do realize that the people paying full price are the ones keeping the companies alive and keeping the games coming, right? Your $2.50 five years after release don't matter.
1
u/Techno_Core 4h ago
That shouldn't be an excuse for companies to release buggy unfinished games that pray upon those customers by holding back what should be in the game at launch just to overcharge them.
And not paying the highest price for the smallest and buggiest version of the game matters only to me. And that's all that matters.

u/TheScareFace 5h ago
I am gonna buy it anyway. Better to buy it now that I know I have the money, can download it a few days beforehand so I can play it right away at release day and you get useful bonuses.

Is this crazy? is your take crazy? i’ve been ‘preordering’ digital games so i can forget about it. Why would anyone assume that its because ‘they may run out’?
who is the dumb person here ?!

u/KarenBoof 5h ago
Can’t you just buy it once you remember (after it’s released)?
4
u/behindthewell 5h ago
what is the accomplishing that simply preordering isnt? I set all my bills to auto-pay. really what would your suggestion benefit me?
-1
u/KarenBoof 3h ago
If you die before it’s released, your beneficiaries would have more money
Time value of money
If there’s a disaster and your system is destroyed, you’ll have saved money
What is being accomplished by purchasing beforehand?
1
u/behindthewell 2h ago
i risk more getting into my vehicle everyday and driving to work. you can play devils advocate all you want, i’m sure someone here would argue your points. what is being accomplished beforehand was already discussed above.

People preordered physical games because they could run out of stock, the OP is using satire to argue that once games become primarly digital the only reason to preorder disappeared.
This comment was brought to you by the media literacy club.

Absolutely have. 1. I want the pre-order goodies. 2. I like to support my favorite game companies.

I hadn't bought a game at launch in years, because they are never the best version (bugs and all that). I always wait about a year after a game comes out before I buy it. But Silent Hill 2 is my favorite game so I bought the remake at launch. Could not figure out how to progress in one section of the game. After like an hour, I decide to look it up online and learned that it was a bug and a door was supposed to open that never did. I will never buy a game at launch again lol.

u/RadishRedditor 5h ago
It's to let you pre-downoad the game and thus play it immediately on launch...

u/Nottodayreddit1949 4h ago edited 4h ago
I pre-order cause of the discount.
It's great to be on pc.
Why would i say no to 15% off something I'm planning on buying.

u/Shot_Combrees 3h ago
I used to preorder everything before realizing I could literally just wait three days

I’ve haven’t bought a game on release since BF4 and that was only cause I happened to go in the week before it released to get a PS4.
How do people catch the sales for popular games for PSN? I see like CP2077 went for like $15 a few months ago, but I was looking then and didn’t see it.
Can anyone help a lame like me lol.

u/Sabrina_the_Mouse 2h ago
The last game I pre-ordered was Silent Hill F and there was 0 regret. Loved that game so much.

u/Hunteractive 1h ago
i preordered Fable cos I found a good deal for it and it comes with the preorder bonuses (I know thats dumb but eh) fable was my childhood
also it gives me something to look forward to

How does it matter whether I preorder them or buy them 1.7 seconds after release?

u/DragonFireSpace 38m ago
I pre ordered Ace Combat 8 because I knew the game would be a banger .
I could pre-install it to play after coming home from work instead of spending the entire evening downloading it to play the day after.
Also it came with a free copy of Ace Combat Zero.
There was literally no downside to it.
1
u/Efficient_Actuator84 6h ago
There is a 1 major advantage actually....
Usually you can download the game a day or few in advance. So don't have to then spend the whole release day waiting for the game to download.
1
u/Parker1055 6h ago
Pre-orders for games now a days include so mi h more than just having it in your library before it comes out

Such a dumb take.
If I know that I'm going to buy a game, why wouldn't I preorder it? It'll preload a few days early, you can play as soon as it's released.
I'll be having a laugh at all the idiots trying to download 200GB (or whatever) of GTA6 on release day. I hope they have enough food and stay hydrated.

You don't understand though. They'll give you little virtual treats if you do it. 🙄

I'm not a gamer, but i hope/assume the pre-order gets you the game at a discount (which helps the seller/developer/retailer)

Dumb argument, pre orders have rewards, pre load, special cosmetics, early access, and you re helping them via steam algorithm to reach more people for a bigger launch day. I don't preorder much these days, but there's usually a reason
1
u/Spiritual-Coconut-73 3h ago
The rewards are mostly basic cosmetic stuff.
0
u/Dry_Rent_8646 3h ago
True, but it's usually the only way to get them till they rerelease the game
2
u/al_pacappuchino 3h ago
Also everything is done by the time the games comes out. So it’s one less step.
1
u/Holy_Grail_Reference 2h ago
The fact that a game needs extra cosmetic things is an issue with content and story writing.
1
u/Dry_Rent_8646 2h ago
It doesn't NEED it, it was free with the preorder tho, and it's sometimes nice
