The guy also played the good guy on and off camera who everyone got along with and loved for his entire career up until the slap, and tbf he was on top of the world in the mid 2000s or so. Now he's arguably rock bottom since he became A-list, and probably still trying to chase that high. Adding a divorce on top is probably too much for his pride to deal with so he's just trying to make the best of the shitty situation he's in and try to recover what he can, but it's coming across as sad.
To be clear though, I do think he needs to dump her yesterday. Everything ive seen from her has suggested she's a vile person who is probably incredibly manipulative and almost certainly sociopathic.
