The original goon material

648

u/Death_sayer 9d ago

I’m SAYING!

how did the super thin/heroin chic thing even catch on?
Honestly curious.

255

u/Sellot4pe 9d ago

Honestly I just think it's mainly sought out by fashion designers as it's often an integral part of how their clothes are shown on catwalks etc

I think the mistake is seeing this type of build as an ideal when it's originally an artistic preference. Open to correction/elaboration by more knowledgeable knowers btw

66

u/cyclemonster 9d ago

It's not just an "artistic preference" made by fashion designers. Plenty of men legitimately prefer slim women as a sexual preference too.

44

u/Flintly 9d ago

I think slim and or fit/toned get mixed up a lot. Anorexia is not sexy but lean and healthy can be

16

u/AdvertisingLost3565 9d ago

This is my preference personally for what it's worth. However, the beauty standard goes back and forth and ia different between communities

The beauty and fashion industry is the most glaring evidence that nobody actual dresses up for the attention of straight men, lol.

7

u/Sellot4pe 9d ago

Maybe that's largely because straight men will give women attention regardless of what they wear?

I feel like fashion designers were like hey can we at least have a similar size model so I’m not building clothing for 1000 different sizes for this fucking runway show and they were like sure no problem and then a time went on and that size became sought out by outsiders, even though it was just an arbitrary size picked for the ease of mass production of runway clothing.

26

u/Zer0323 9d ago

it also saved on clothing costs. why design 15 dresses for a medium size when you can save 20% fabric by designing around a twig. no shade to natural twig people but you get shafted on clothing costs.

Heroin chic was a fashion thing, and the fashion world has never really been about satisfying straight male tastes. Fashion models are essentially meant to be walking clothes hangers. The spectacle is supposed to be the clothing, not the woman.

13

u/Psilonaut21 9d ago

It's so they can make more garments out of the available textiles. And they don't have to provide a caterer for the emaciated models.

Women rejecting male beauty standards, and instead setting them amongst themselves with the help of the gays. Seriously.

It was like a mass case of an eating disorder where a young girl is growing up, gets catcalled, hates it, feels scared, intimidated, doesn't want to grow up, so quickly develops anorexia - surprisingly this is not that uncommon. Heroine chic was like this on a massive scale, a rejection of straight male values, replaced by the values of the fashion catwalk. Men, since the dawn of time have 'liked big butts and I can lie', thighs, tits, long healthy hair, youthful curves, slim waist wide hips. we don't change.

108

u/New-Ad-363 9d ago

Just to set the record straight, it's "I like big butts and I cannot lie".

Educate yourself on your Sir Mix-a-Lot so as to not misquote him in the future.

We were told by society that if we were overweight in any iteration, which meant not at least slightly underweight, we were fat, to be objects of ridicule, and no one would ever love us. I remember this clearly as an anorexic, then bulimic, 13 year old in the 80’s.

25

u/LacerisPogo 9d ago

I was 15 when I a grown man (at least 50) saw me eating a single piece of licorice as said "a moment on the lips, forever on the hips" while staring at me.

I'd always been told I had "child bearing hips" so that comment really impacted my relationship with food, and how I viewed my body.

It breaks my heart to see toxic 00s heroin chic come back in style again. I wish I could tell these teen girls to please not destroy their body while it's developing the way I did. I'm still trying to accept my adult body in my 30s that's far from overweight but what matters is that I'm mostly healthy

I'm absolutely convinced that modern beauty standards for both men and women are created by people of the same gender. Men aren't taking steroids for women and women aren't starving themselves for men.

25

u/DeterminedQuokka 6d ago

The research backs you and has for at least 30 years women want women to be smaller than men do. And men want men to be more swole than women do.

71

u/Asherandai1 9d ago

No disrespect intended, but that’s easy to say when you have them.

If she got with you before you had them, then it’s more believable. But so many people will say things like “x is just a bonus”, but never even consider someone that doesn’t have “x”.

I think it’s easier to fraud pictures when you’re skinny. I’m underweight (gaining weight!) and I can easily pose and dress to make myself look curvier and less underweight than I actually am, it’s easier to add lbs than remove them in pics.

I used to be around 20 lbs underweight and malnutrition wasn’t visible in photos, definitely looked way more sickly irl. Healthy weight is always most attractive

→ More replies (3)

56

u/Short-Cause885 9d ago

I've once heard a guy explain it as: well they get fatter after pregnancy, and I trust the super skinny person more to lose the weight.

19

u/teraechopuff 9d ago

Couples often gain weight when they start dating. I think that’s probably a better indicator than whether someone is skinny before pregnancy. A lot of skinny people end up fat later in life. If you’re in a healthy relationship these are also conversations you can simply have with your partner.

12

u/alphajugs 9d ago

And most skinny people I know aren’t skinny because they were fat and lost weight. Many of them are slim because they’re active, but many of them are slim despite being lazy. So a person’s current weight is a terrible gauge for how easily they’ll lose weight after having a baby. 🙄

As much as people on Reddit like to claim think otherwise, there is a reason why stereotypical preferences are stereotypical. It's because the majority of people find them attractive, at least in the west. For better or worse, mind you.

My taste in women tends to align with that of other men on Reddit, but we tend to think that we're the norm when in reality we are very much so the exception.

Same with stuff such as breast size, butt size, etc. There is a reason why these categories are so popular on porn, cam, hentai, etc sites.

I often feel like there's a lot of men on this platform who kind of behave in a pick-me manner. They think that them voicing their moderate and 'noble' preferences wins them points with others. No doubt many of them also absolute do prefer the things they do, but it still often feels a little bit.. off.

Also, there's too high of a number of men here who also feel the need to raise up some women by shooting down others.

I usually hesitate to make any sweeping generalizations, but a hill I’ll die on is that most women prefer a dad bod to super swole. So yes, a little bit of extra tummy is 10000% acceptable

149

u/throwawaybunny99 9d ago

Yea but women will say they like a dad bod, but then when they’re asked to show what that looks like it’s a pretty fucking swole physique. So that means nothing actually.

65

u/Charming-One583 9d ago

What I see many women label as a "dad bod" is actually a guy who does lift heavy and goes gym regularly but they eat whatever they want so they have some body fat but also have a lot of muscle. I think the misconception comes about from women who aren't deep into fitness so they genuinely don't know.

At this point, I have been single long enough that I don't have preferences anymore. Just give me someone decent looking and nice personailty

Edit: for those of you seething at the the fact that I said 'no preferences' and then mentioned wanting a 'decent looking girl with a nice personality'. I may have mistaken a few things. So let me confirm, I am a decent looking guy(ad I am told) who people enjoy being around, so when I said that, I meant that I have no preferences, as in I don't have a "type" but I still do have standards and believe that I should be with someone who at least at my level. Please forgive my ignorance

When women say looks don't matter. I assume there is a "within reason" caveat. I assume it means they won't turn down a guy for being bald, or a little overweight, or a non traditionally attractive face.

However, I assume there is a line they will not cross as concerns physical appearance, no matter how glowing the personality of the person may be.

Well, speaking personally.  It "feels like" women are always told that thinner = better.  Any woman I've ever been close enough to (even platonically) have an honest discussion about such things, this is the consistent feedback.  And movies/tv/etc seems to mirror this and in my experience women feel this constant pressure and it is unnecessary and can be destructive.

Also (in my personal opinion) wrong.

I don’t think it’s pride, more awareness. Women do so many drastic things to themselves to change what they think is unattractive, most of the time they make themselves look inhuman. People look better natural (excluding extreme cases).

I was watching a TV show and a 24 year old woman was saying she wants Botox on her forehead because she sees lines when she frowns. She has already had 7 lip filler injections, breast augmentation surgery and chin surgery. She’s a pretty girl and it just seems so sad to me that she’s doing all these things that will inevitably make her look worse. Shes so young and in the prime of her life but sees problems where so many would be jealous of her for how she looks.

There are lots of posts like this because people are imploring women to love themselves and see their own beauty like men do, (excluding the Tate minority).

Worth noting this woman is younger and has an hourglass figure. So she carries that tiny bit of pudge extremely well. If she keeps eating junk food and drinking white claws she's not going to be looking like that in 10 years.

Ok heart me out......slim girls with snatched waist looks good if u have nice size on the boobs and ass....but a little tummy can also look good if u got a big bigger /wider hips....it's all about ratio....a skinny girl with skinny Waist and no ass wouldn't look sexy and same with a girl who has average ass but got belly fat that doesn't look sexy either.... It's all about symmetry and toned body.

There is a bit of fat on it that actually skinny girls don't have. Nothing wrong with noticing it.

Wow what an ugly ass ho. I envy people like Michael Dell who gets to wake up next to his beautiful wife every day.

We like’em thin, normal, chubby, big butt, no butt, big bitties, bee stings, long hair, short hair… we like’em all. With the right personality, almost every woman can be irresistibly attractive.
