I think there's room in the market for a back to basics car company that takes out all this bs, goes back to crank windows and all that crap and sells new vehicles for an affordable cost with a good warranty.

It would probably crush today.

Edit: I got like 400 responses saying "slate" ok I get it you can stop

Look at Dacia in Europe, they are exactly that. Maybe not crank windows, not sure.

I had a Dacia as a rental in Martinique, and the rear windows were crank windows. It was a cheap car, but nice to drive. I would certainly buy one as a commuter, for sure.

rear windows were crank windows

Those Dacia Sandero were amazing, up until a few years there were lot's of them still in the streets of Bucharest with over 1 million km on the pedometer.

It is a tragic consequence of yanks not spelling things correctly

It's not tragic, we Brits are actually behind the whole scheme, makes it easier to identify the Americans.

For simplicity and cost savings the Dacia Sandero had crank windows and no engine, just a hole in the floor to stick your feet through.

It's a Flintstones style car. Truly green.

“Odometer” in the US, “clock” in Britain. A pedometer counts your steps when walking or running.

It's apparently also useful for identifying presidents

Not plural, thus far.

Thay's...an odometer. Pedometer reads steps. Hence "ped" like bipedal

I recommend looking at Euro NCAP rating and crash videos of any Dacia car. I value my life more than the price difference to any reputable car company’s cheapest acceptable option.

They have decent safety record and perform well in crashes. The issue with modern NCAP is lack of bicycle detection autobreaking etc.

No, they don’t. Look it up:
https://www.euroncap.com/assessments/?assessmentType.code=CAR_SAFETY&limit=20&make.code=DAC&path=%2Fassessments&sort=ratingYear%3Adesc%2Cmake.name%3Aasc&view=grid

Dacia’s highest rating it 3 stars for one model and regularly 1 star, while Volkswagen or Toyota has regularly 5 stars and in the worst case 3.

Again they perform well in crash test.

The issue with 1 star models is lack of active safety / driver assistance. For example radar on those Dacias does not track bicycles and pedestrians.

Thanks for pointing it out. Then I retract my unfair accusation of Dacia!

My Ford Focus has cranks in the back

What’s your standard on a nice car if you thought a Dacia was nice, especially for a daily?

not everyone marries their car

Okay? How does this answer the question? A daily driver still has to meet a certain standard of functionality and comfort. Even if the functionality is fine as barebones as it is, the comfort of Dacia's is so bad I think it’s a valid question on what such people have as their standard. Or maybe it was a brand new Dacia (like 2026 or 2027 model) which I haven’t driven yet and perhaps those got better?
