Rumi, The Song of the Reed
The Song of the Reed
Listen to this reed as it complains—
it tells the story of separations.
"Since I was torn from the reed-bed,
men and women have moaned at my lament.
I want a breast torn piece by piece from separation,
so that I may tell the tale of the pain of longing.
Whoever remains far from his origin
seeks again the days of his union.
I have lamented in every gathering;
I have become the companion of the ill-fated and the fortunate.
Everyone became my friend from his own opinion;
none sought the secrets within me.
My secret is not far from my lament,
but the eye and ear lack that light.
The body is not hidden from the soul, nor the soul from the body,
yet no one has permission to see the soul.
This is fire, this sound of the reed—and not wind.
Whoever does not have this fire—may he not be!
It is the fire of love that fell into the reed;
it is the boiling of love that fell into the wine.
The reed is the companion of anyone cut off from a friend;
its veils have torn our veils.
Who has seen a poison and an antidote like the reed?
Who has seen a confidant and a yearner like the reed?
The reed tells of the road full of blood;
it tells stories of the love of Majnun.
The confidant of this consciousness is none but the unconscious;
the tongue has no buyer but the ear.
In our grief, days became late;
days became companions of burnings.
If days passed, say: "Go—no matter!"
You remain—O You who have no like in purity!
Everyone but the fish grew weary of the water;
whoever is without daily bread—his day grew late.
The raw never understands the state of the cooked;
so speech must be short—and peace!
Break the bond, be free, O son—
how long will you be the bond of silver and gold?
If you pour the sea into a jug,
how much will it hold—a single day's portion?
The jug of the eye of the greedy was never filled,
until the shell became content, the pearl was never born.
Whoever's garment was torn by love,
he became wholly pure of greed and fault.
Be joyful, O love, our sweet desire!
O physician of all our ailments!
O remedy of our pride and shame!
O you who are our Plato and our Galen!
The earthly body rose to the heavens through love;
the mountain came to dancing and became nimble.
Love became the soul of Sinai, O lover—
Sinai intoxicated, and Moses the ass—thunderstruck!
If I were joined with my own lip-companion,
like the reed I would tell all that must be said.
Whoever is separated from his own tongue-companion
becomes tongueless, though he has a hundred melodies.
When the rose went and the rose-garden passed,
you will no longer hear the story from the nightingale.
All are the beloved, and the lover is a veil;
the beloved is living, and the lover is dead.
When the lover has no care for himself,
he remains like a bird without wings—woe to him!
How can I have awareness before and behind,
when my Beloved's light is not before and behind?
Love wants this speech to be outside—
the mirror is not a tale-bearer—how could it be?
Do you know why your mirror is not a tale-bearer?
Because the rust is not distinguished from its face.
