The results on the recent ship-wide poll on how strictly Rule 4 should be enforced are in.
Even adding the "Less Strict" and "No Change" votes together into a 'Not Stricter' joint category, just over a third of the community still want stricter posting rules. And looking at core contributer votes, it's a near 50/50 split between "No Change" and "More Strict".
Flat out banning crossposts, random references, and "Red Dwarf in the Wild" posts (where someone shares something that simply reminded them of Red Dwarf) seems a little harsh considering the split. But doing nothing at all would also mean ignoring a large proportion of the community... so...
The announcement is still going on.
INTRODUCING SMEGPOST SUNDAY!!
All low-effort "look at this random item / person / haircut / foodstuff / news article / post nothing really to do with Red Dwarf but here is a title quoting/referencing the show so ehhhhh nudge nudge ehhhhhhh, you see what I am thinking ehhhhhhhhhhhh?" posts must now be kept to Sunday, and be given the Smegpost Sunday flair.
To start with we're hoping we can keep the rule on relevancy pretty loose on Sundays as a bit of compromise and see how that goes, so some smeg that would have been removed previously may now stay up on Sundays, but lots of smeg that would have stayed up the rest week will now be removed... so pros and cons, highs and lows, demons and angels.... if the community response is still that posts are just a little too smeggy even on Sundays we can see about raising the bar again later down the line.
Anyone posting smeg on non-Sundays or misusing the Smegpost Sunday flair will get one reminder, which if ignored, will mean they aren't able to post again. Seem fair?
Oh and we'll turn off crossposts for a bit and see how that goes.

On behalf of everyone here at the r/RedDwarf subreddit, here is a massive THANK YOU to u/DougNaylorOfficial for his mammoth AMA Event on our little corner of the internet here a few days ago! And also, thank you to every single member of this community for being in this sub and making it the awesome place that it is, and double-thanks if you joined in on the AMA itself! Doug responded to over 160 questions and comments over the course of TWO DAYS, which is absolutely legendary. What a guy!
The AMA, at the time of writing, has nearly 600 comments and over 175,000 views, making it by far the post with the most engagement the sub has ever seen, and the highest rated Text Only post we have ever had (yeah that is a real category. What do you mean that isn't a real category? Look it's not my fault everyone around here likes memes so smegging much is it??)
Anyway, I suspect that the answers in this AMA will be combed over, picked apart, and referred back to for the next four decades of Red Dwarf Fandom. We have already had at least one article written using new info gleaned from the AMA making a full circle back to being posted on this sub-reddit again.
While I highly recommend people read through the whole AMA post to see each and every one of Doug's insightful answers, thoughtful comments, witty jokes, and heartfelt responses, I appreciate that 600 comments is a lot of reading, and I would hate for some things to go overlooked. So, I thought I'd do my own, personal, subjective, really-not-particularly-wanted, key takeaways- in the form of a Top Five Ten Twenty Doug Answers List! These are just the responses specifically relating to Red Dwarf that I personally found to be the most revealing new info on hot topics, the most insightful and interesting, or just the most amusing and funny. Enjoy.

back in 2012 had aspirations of being a recording engineer but couldn't find work (or wasn't good enough) so I did cover songs to have something to work with. I'm on guitar but the rest of the instruments are sound library samples plugins. I triple tracked the singer in unison and this is what I got.

Clare Grogan shared the first photo on her socials today with the caption "Smeg Heads Reunited! What a crazy weekend meeting up with old and new friends. So great to hang out with Craig and Chris on Sunday." (@therealclaregrogan)
I thought it would be fun to put it side by side with one from back in the day!

I remember way back, after I finished the dvd set, I went to go back and rewatch with commentary on. Couldn't wait to hear about how they felt of each scene. Thought it would be hilarious to hear their commentary over the funniest bits.
Was pretty good, until I got to one part with Norman Lovett. He talked about how he was mistreated by the show runners and that they were very rude and mean to him. This went on for a while and I really did not like it being in the commentary when I'm trying to watch a funny show and hear them talk about it. Also was very awkward because you can tell the others really don't want to talk about it either, as they're there to provide fun and interesting commentary for the show and Lovett is really bringing it down.
No hate towards him at all, apparently he really was treated really badly, I just wish he didn't bring it there. He did not seem to want to be in the commentary at all tbh.
Since then I haven't watched it with commentary again, because I don't want to hear that part again. It just takes me out of it and makes me feel bad.

Before Holly, Norman appeared in The Young Ones, series 2 episode 6, 'Summer Holiday' June 1984. The guy who works at the penny arcade across the street. 😉

I need to share one post which appeared on Facebook two weeks ago. Instead of ticking on the chosen candidate on the election list, one of our citizens voted like this. Not sure if he saluted and fainted too, or wrote anything about fish. I think he's the real winner of the election. (Photo by Aleš Jeník - thank you for making my day)

Hubby and I only really talked because we both knew of the show. I had it on my Tinder profile and he matched when he saw it. Since then it's the show we watched when we couldn't agree on what to watch at dinner. We quoted it to each other.
In May 2026 he had a heart attack and passed. Everything in my life changed. I moved. I downsized. I cried (still do). I thought I lost everything that really could bring me to smile.
One day I was going through his phone, for some important info for car insurance, I noticed he had downloaded the entire series. All 12. Everything was there in the "to watch" folder.
So for each night I would put on an episode or two. Smile, quote the show, then fall asleep before the credits. It makes me feel less lonely.
Last night I finished the season. Which means tonight I start all over again.

Just bought a car that looks like a coupé and the last 3 digits of the reg plate make you think of a certain soup - so I've nicknamed it "Gazpacho Coop"
If only it were red.

Today I had the immense privilege of sitting around a table with Chris Barrie, alongside just two other people, for an hour-long conversation. Difficult for me to not be just a tad star-struck…!
We spent most of the time talking about Red Dwarf and The Brittas Empire, with Chris sharing some fantastic stories and insights from his career.
He was an absolute delight, incredibly down to earth, engaging, and a brilliant storyteller.
He also mentioned a few interesting things about Red Dwarf, including a previously scrapped prequel idea which would have seen a younger actor playing Arnold Rimmer, with Chris himself taking on the role of Rimmer’s father!
From what he was saying, it sounds as though the current thinking is to move forward with more feature-length specials rather than traditional episodic series (the nature of TV funding being what it is..) There was also mention of a potential Red Dwarf theatre production being worked on, but there were no real details mentioned.
Obviously, take all of this with a pinch of salt! These were things mentioned during an informal conversation, not official announcements. Plans can and very likely will change, so please don’t take any of it as confirmation of what’s coming.
All in all, a genuinely memorable experience, and one I feel incredibly fortunate to have had.
A huge thank you to X-Con for making this opportunity possible!

I know he didn’t, and this is just coincidence and not foreshadowing, but I love the idea that old Lister did lose his arm in the same way that our Lister did but for some reason didn’t have it remade by the nanobots. Years of foreshadowing right there on screen.
But realistically, they probably just thought it was a cool aesthetic to go for.

Rewatching the series and appreciating it's darker side, I was also thinking aboit the whole "monster of the week" tendency, and a question occurred to me. Which is the scariest monster that the boys from the Dwarf encounter?
Part of the comedy value of the show is the way that most of the monsters are all a bit silly, comically low tech, and so on. But which monster - either in terms of what they do in the episode or the premise of their character - is the most "scary", unsettling one in your mind?

Went to a Show Racism the Red Card event in my city today. Peter Beardsley was there. I'm not particularly into football but I'm afraid to say I did not pluck up enough courage to ask him about his time filming Casablanca alongside the legendary Myra Binglebatt...
