This isn’t just happening in Tennessee. There are reports of voters in other states experiencing touchscreen voting machines changing their selections from Democratic to Republican candidates.

Please check, double-check, and TRIPLE-CHECK your ballot before submitting it. Make sure every vote reflects your choice. If something looks wrong, alert a poll worker before casting your ballot.

The same country that gave voting privileges to only land owning male whites. Then conceded to give blacks 3/5ths when determining House representation. Then needed an amendment to let women vote? Yeah it’s status quo

So many people seem to misunderstand the 3/5ths compromise.

The North wanted only voters to be counted towards representation, and since black people couldn't vote they wouldn't be counted. The South wanted all the people, even those who couldn't vote, to be counted.

Counting non-voters would have given white landowners an outsized influence in Washington. For example, in South Carolina the ratio of black to white people was about 1:1. Meaning that if the black people were counted, even though they couldn't vote, every white person was getting twice as much representation in Washington as in the Northern States.

Considering there were more restrictions on which white people could vote, the voting pool was even smaller and the representation much higher per eligible voter. A man would cast a vote and it would represent the will of his wife, his children, and a good portion of the surrounding black community.

“The South wanted all people, even those who couldn’t vote, to be counted”

Oh how times have changed.

I mean I think the point here is that nothing has changed. The Southern states didn't want better representation for their slaves. They wanted more power for themselves and wanted their slaves to count towards total population even though they could not vote so that the Southern states could have more representatives and therefore more power and influence, at least when it came to the House.

Fair enough. I just find it ironic how aggressively they’re excluding people now.

I think you may misunderstand their intentions. It was not egalitarianism, at ALL.

You do not understand the 3/5ths compromise. It actually would’ve been better for black people to be 0/5 in that situation.

It was the other way around. The Three-Fifths compromise was in 1787. Slaves had no right to vote. Slave States wanted them to count toward their population for representation, without giving them the right to vote.

I believe their point was, from the modern anti-slavery perspective, it would have been better had the slaves not contributed to their census population. Meanwhile the post they had responded to had a somewhat ambiguous implication that counting slaves fully would be morally better. Both comments should have been clearer about it being slaves than simply black folk, as free blacks were fully counted in slave states.

How many countries in the world had representative government in any form in 1790? Hint: You can count them with one finger.

And universal suffrage didn't happen anywhere until 1893 (New Zealand).

I don't know where you live, but you may want to check your own countries eligible voter history before you throw stones.
