It wasn't politically smart to say that during her campaign IMO, I think even Bill allegedly said something to her about it, but she was nevertheless dead-nuts correct. Only thing I quibble with her over is the percentages.

So many of us found her relatable. For every 100 people that called her "elitist", there were at least a handful of us that watched her, the educated, sharp as a razor political operative, being stuck in the same hell we were, only broadcast on live TV.
And I'm not even a woman. It's only because of empathy that I have the barest inkling of this being the lived daily experience of pretty much every intelligent woman in the USA.
But then we have had this archetype since the tale of Cassandra.

The sentiment and the statement was correct and the issue was that no one ever listened to the whole quote:
ā
But the "other" basketĀ ā the other basketĀ ā and I know because I look at this crowd I see friends from all over America here: I see friends from Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and Texas andĀ ā as well as, you know, New York and CaliforniaĀ ā but that "other" basket of people are people who feel the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures; and they're just desperate for change. It doesn't really even matter where it comes from. They don't buy everything he says, but ā he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won't wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they're in a dead-end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.ā6

It can be painful to hear the truth, especially when the truth directly destroys someones self perception.

u/Imaginary-List-972 4d ago
I never buy that reasoning. She was talking about Maga, Trump supporters. They're voting for Trump no matter what. "I'm a Maga Trump supporter, but I was going to vote for Hlllary until she said that". And she said that about the racist/sexist/homophobic section of Trump supporters. So "She said racism is bad, so I'm not voting for her". So you gotta act like you're for racism to get the racist vote and act like you are against racism to get the non racist vote. I always love that she said SOME trump supporters are racist and we call them deplorables, and they said "Hey she just called me deplorable". But again I don't buy "they were racist trump supporters but they would have voted for her until she said that about them". If so, why don't we now get "Trump called them Dumbocrats, they would have voted for his maga candidates until he called Dems dumb".
→ More replies (1)2
u/WhompBiscuits 4d ago
Yep. Because if you were Maga then and heard what she said and immediately identified with the latter part of what she said, then you're guilty of it.
And it's not like she didn't know what she was talking about. Although she is originally from the Chicago area, she lived in Arkansas for a large portion of her adult life. She saw more than enough.

She knew because they had been turning their ire at her all her career, ever since she suggested universal single payer healthcare until Bill Clinton, which never got implemented.
But the far right lost their shit and invented lies about her ad infinitum ever since.
Because she wanted people to not die from treatable ailments nor go bankrupt, and all it would have cost was people like Elon musk a few fewer billions than he has, which are already too many billions to ever need.
She knew because they went after her before they went after the rest of us.
But she was never wrong about them. She was right to call them out, but not enough of us had her back on that.

I know I'm getting downvoted for this
Why are we pathetically nostalgic for the single most damaging campaign to the DNC ever, even more than 2024? They had to back pivot to Biden to barely take the presidency back. Its this groveling for a "we didn't win this one but we should of" past that really brings home how screwed we are. You guys do realize this popularized party in-fighting to the point that people had to say vote blue no matter who to essentially beg people to vote them in? This is not how people win political campaigns. Republicans do not have this problem, and they vote in lockstep....even considering how bad is Trump is polling. In the end this is just a picture of a war criminal you're using to karma farm op

Tangent: Clinton may have ran a lacking campaign for the Democratic nomination against Obama and the other candidates (maybe her team arrogantly believed that Clinton winning the nomination was set in stone), and Obama (while being an underdog candidate) had everything else going for him (a young, handsome, and charismatic black senator with no political baggage, who was also a great public speaker), but I feel like sexism played a huge role (media coverage really nitpicked on Clinton that they didnāt against Obama)
Too bad we didnāt get the ā16-Year Democratic Idealā (Clinton in her prime followed by a more experienced, popular Obama)
Maybe 24 years if Goreās victory had not been stolen

People need to pump the breaks on internet narratives. She was one of the most famous politicians in the country and a good chunk of Democrats had very fond memories of the Clinton era and wanted her.
In 2008 she ran a primary vs Obama and she lost 48.1% to 48.0%. and had only 50k less votes countrywide than him. She got nearly 17 million votes in the 2016 primary and crossed 55%.
This idea that she wasn't a heavy favorite and someone the majority of Democrats liked at the time is just revisionist. Bernie moved the overton window and now Clinton and Obama style politics are out of vogue (which ultimately hurt Biden's admin as well), but she was popular and a favorite and most Dems were afraid to run against her in that primary. Bernie didn't even want to run against her. He was lobbying Warren to.
