Because the "radical" left in this country would be considered centrists literally anywhere else. The right wing has done such incredible damage to this country that centrist policies that benefit everyone seem extreme to them.

You want to know the most interesting part? His city run grocery stores are so controversial, yet its a policy partially borrowed from the deep south red states, who have controlled the distribution of liquor through ABC stores for 30 years+ (see North Carolina, for example). Conservatives really are just that farking stupid to disagree with a policy because of the person, not the substance
17
u/Bearwhale Sep 05 '26
They did the same when Obama basically copied Mitt Romney's healthcare plan.
7
u/jakeStacktrace Sep 06 '26
Exactly. That's why it is a marketplace with competition because it sounds like a good solution to conservatives embracing a capitalist system when that's what we have been doing and why we pay twice and have a lower life expectancy. But if you have a black man propose that, death panels!

Racism and fear of communism. Thats literally the only reason why. Much of what he has done is already well established policy in european cities, the main reason he is hated is because of good ol "fuck muslims" sentiment and 60s/70s propaganda that tought Americans to fear anything even remotely benefiting the lower classes as communism.

Itâs mostly cult brainwashing here in America. You can ask our conservatives if doing âXâ thing is bad and theyâd agree, but tell them Trump did âXâ and theyâd start making all sorts of excuses for him. Not sure why this conman has that much charm to our conservatives, but he does.
2
u/Dotcaprachiappa Sep 05 '26
The status quo is sitting on your butt all day and hoping the city doesn't collapse under your term, or at least if it does that your wealth is not affected. Anything other than that is to be radical.

Yeah, the question is now âis it sustainableâ? Most of these changes were planned out in advance and are just finishing up during his stay in office. So the question is will all the new policies negatively affect NYâs budget and will taxes have to compensate? If taxes have to compensate then you could see companies move out of NYC to avoid taxes which would cut down NYCâs revenue.
All and all itâs probably too early to say itâs successful but so far itâs looking good. Time will tell though and if it remains successful Iâd like to see some of his policies expanding to other places.

Once you have someone in power who actually uses their power to serve their community, people start to realize that things actually can improve and the reasons their lives havenât improved is because the people in power have no interest in actually improving your lives.

This program was started by the previous mayor, which makes the reply extra funny. This has been posted and corrected dozens of times already.
Good for Mamdani for continuing to fund this project so it can become a reality. But that is all he did.

u/Thestaminakingdom Sep 05 '26
Sometimes the low hanging fruit tree gets chopped down instead of watered. Just ask the Trump admin.
24
u/whichwitch9 Sep 05 '26
At the same point, the previous mayor dragged his feet and never actually implemented it.
That's kind of the difference. A lot of the projects Mamdani is doing had funds already earmarked or had been approved. Part of what he's doing is looking for these projects and making sure they actually get done. Mamdani has been way more successful at navigating the red tape and getting the physical labor done than some of his predecessors. And part is because the dude is legit in his office working everyday to manage things
2
u/Not-So-Handsome-Jack Sep 05 '26 edited Sep 05 '26
More than a 1000 where placed, which is the same amount Mamdani is planning to place this year. These are also paired with custom designed loading trucks that also had to be developed by Adams.
All the red tape of developing the program was already finished. What red rape did Mamdani solve? The program exists, the design and manufacturing was done, ... all the hard parts were done. It's just a matter of trowing money at it. Its great that he will, and that it will be expanded even more. These bins were actually a small part of Adams program. He made stricter regulation requiring the landlords to purchase over a 1 million trash bins. There bins were available for purchase in stores all over NY. Making landlords pay for them is a plus too.

Which, to be clear, is not a bad thing. We definitely need more politicians who aren't shamed into being Republicans Lite to the point that even inoffensive improvements are paralyzed.
