I find the lack of details …. Concerning.

619

u/chris_decker08 Plex Employee Sep 02 '26

Its bad practice to disclose details that attackers can use without giving users a decent amount of time to update. Details will be disclosed at a later point in time.

14

u/TheUnfortunatePanda Sep 02 '26

what are the affected versions?

14

u/jbygden Lifetime PlexPass Sep 02 '26

The post says to update to 1.43.3 for Server and 1.115.0 for client - isn't that enough?

14

u/basicKitsch Sep 02 '26

that'd be really odd since 1.43.3 has been out for months and for something significant enough to send an update today not to be related to a more recent or specific release. like super odd

9

u/KerashiStorm Sep 02 '26

It's probably a third party code library that was updated in that version which had a vulnerability. This may or may not have been because of security concerns. 1.43.3 is just the minimum version without the vulnerability.

5

u/everyoneisadj Sep 02 '26

the upstream attacks over the last couple of years have been terrifying. The XZ backdoor one in particular... yeesh

Assume it’s related to these “fixes” In 1.43.3.10861…

(Security) Address potential vulnerability in the CompanionProxy. (PM-5763)

(Security) The TranscoderH264Options and TranscoderH264OptionsOverride preferences can no longer be modified over the network. (PM-5766)

Generally speaking zero days are reported to the owners of the product, they have some disclosure period to release a patch (which Plex has done), or if a patch is not possible within the disclosure period they can release a mitigation (a config change, or turn off a feature, or add a firewall rule etc which prevents the exploit). At the end of the disclosure period (after ample time to get the patches out) the zero day is published (generally an explanation and proof of concept to recreate) in which time it is no longer valuable to anyone looking to leverage it to attack servers.

43

u/xylopyrography Sep 02 '26

Standard practice, and becoming even more so. Patch notes are going to probably be pushed months past when you need to update in order to slow down attackers.

It's getting hard for humans to keep up.

14

u/AdRevolutionary2679 Sep 02 '26

Not really. Giving a lot of details would be literally saying « here’s how to hack not up to date Plex server ». It to let time to users to update their servers before a complete communication

5

u/parkertyler Sep 02 '26

CVEs have been requested and we’ll reply to this thread with more details once they’re published.

5

u/janesmb Sep 02 '26

Disturbing even.

1

u/naxhh Sep 02 '26

big enough to tell you and nto say whyso likely some kind of remote access or privilege escalation or a mix of both.so better update

My plex just won't run at all. Have to open the hood and see what's up

1

u/Boss_Hoss90 28d ago

My portforward no longer works. Did you find anything?

2

u/Palabaster 28d ago

Yea, use a different media center software

0

u/Boss_Hoss90 24d ago

I actually found the problem like an hour after asking you. Going into my plex folder, one of my certifications was bad. I deleted it, launched plex and it redownloaded the certificate. My port started working instantly.

97

u/Meh-Gyver Sep 01 '26

They late. I did this last week.

25

u/CLOBBERTIME Roku Sep 02 '26

Fuck me I hit the skip button in my client because I was trying to watch a movie when it came up

24

u/StringFood Sep 02 '26

i took your glasses because you didn't update your plex. go ahead and check. you will find them quite gone

2

u/strixtle 2xDS1019+,1xDX517,1xDS1821+ Sep 02 '26

If you do accidentally hit the skip button (as I did), is there a way to override that and force the update. Though I am on 1.43.3, so it seems like I'm good, but other than manually downloading the file, there's no way to get Plex to force an update once you hit skip?

3

u/CLOBBERTIME Roku Sep 02 '26

Pretty sure you can just go to the server and “check for updates” or log into the Web UI using a browser while on the LAN and do the same but idk

2

u/strixtle 2xDS1019+,1xDX517,1xDS1821+ Sep 02 '26

Check for Updates is greyed out if you skip the latest release.

6

u/magkliarn Synology DS218+ Sep 02 '26

I checked my changelog and the earliest Public channel 1.43.3 version (1.43.3.10828) was released July 13th. So it's not exactly brand new code.

4

u/sellera Sep 02 '26

you're on 1.43.3.10896 too? do you know if that's the latest version?

i'm running plex on a rasperry pi and updated it last week, iirc.

4

u/southave Sep 02 '26

that's the version I'm on and I updated last week too

47

u/merlinus Carthago Delenda Est Sep 02 '26

I did this last week too in my normal routine maintenance updates. But glad you are posting here.

21

u/yibbida Sep 02 '26

Im on 1.43.4 from the update the other day.

9

u/human-derp Sep 02 '26

same. my auto-updater did it! had me confused about this post

2

u/KnifeFightAcademy Sep 02 '26

Auto Updater? ...I would like to know more

2

u/butterhorse Sep 02 '26

for me it's unraid plugin "CA auto update applications"

2

u/Viver1 Sep 02 '26

I just updated it to the same version. We are ahead!

46

u/arewecooked Sep 02 '26

“a number of security issues”

that bit and the overall tone of the email… awesome!!!

10

u/bfodder Sep 02 '26

You should be more concerned about any software you use that DOESN'T patch "a number of security issues" because that means they are either ignoring them or ignorant of them.

2

u/arewecooked Sep 02 '26

It’s possible to be equally concerned for both.

2

u/bfodder Sep 02 '26

Sure, but it would be silly.

12

u/TheUnfortunatePanda Sep 02 '26

I want them to tell me which versions are affected for the vulnerability. Is it all versions of PMS? They can at least say that clearly.

4

u/jgpkxc Sep 02 '26

Thanks for making me aware.

6

u/Kainzy Sep 02 '26

Updated my NAS build a few hours ago. Plex remote access was then broken. Cheers. I'll revert back in a bit when I get home.

3

u/ArcticBeavers Sep 02 '26

I've been having issues with remote access for a while. Figured I would have to delve into port forwarding. Does this new version break it even further?

8

u/obogobo Sep 02 '26

Annoying their apt repo still has 1.42 as the latest. Had to dpkg -i it manually

8

u/kgb499 Sep 02 '26

4

u/Zenuka_ Sep 02 '26

Thanks for this, didn't know!

1

u/KerashiStorm Sep 02 '26

This does not inspire confidence in the statement "You’ll only need to complete these steps once." which is found in that post.

1

u/J0k350nm3 Sep 04 '26

Thanks for this!

5

u/Breatnach Sep 02 '26

Thanks, I thought I was going crazy when doing an apt install didn't change the version number.

6

u/human-derp Sep 02 '26

im confused. am I late? did they already release another? im on 1.43.4.10903

5

u/FanClubof5 Sep 02 '26

I think the announcement is actually the late one. My docker container which is 1.43.3 was released on Aug 4th so if you updated in the past month or so you should already have the security patches.

3

u/Brandi_yyc Sep 02 '26

This is the same version I have, I think I updated sometime last week?

11

u/bulyxxx Sep 01 '26

Already did

3

u/Krojack76 Sep 02 '26

Weird. I'm already running Version 1.43.3.10896 and it seems like the last time I updated was a few weeks ago.

3

u/i3903 Sep 02 '26

Started getting intrusion prevention alerts on my Plex server less than 24 hours prior to their notification. Something is going down.

9

u/wyrdone42 Sep 02 '26

With the release of Anthropic Mythos, which has been fed all open source code and a large swatch of proprietary code from many vendors, new exploits are being found and patched at a highly increased rate.

It's going to be a long and bumpy ride, but in the end more secure code is the end goal.

7

u/Imnotyoursupervisor Sep 02 '26

It’s not ideal but containers, Linux, watchtower on the nickfedor build.

I’d rather have security patches solved as soon as they come out than complain about UI / UX updates.

2

u/paintballboi07 Sep 03 '26

I've been meaning to look into watchtower further since the main release was abandoned. Appreciate the info.

25

u/SamURLJackson Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

The last two releases have stopped responding to client requests entirely for me. No thanks

Edit: my working version is 1.43.2.10687

I have tried the two releases after this one and neither worked so I downgraded back to 1.43.2.10687 both times with great success. The app and logs didn't show me any indication that anything was wrong, but it didn't respond to any requests. Restarting the service worked but only for a minute or two

24

u/PokemonCrazy Sep 02 '26

How are you running Plex? I use Docker and have never had any issues like this.

-6

u/SamURLJackson Sep 02 '26

I don't use docker for Plex. Just a straight install

These last 2 releases it just stops responding. It is running, but my media shows as unavailable. I have to restart plexmediaserver and it is available again for a couple of mins. Over and over. I've kept it downgraded to a version from like Aug 2 and have had not had this issue since that downgrade

6

u/chris_decker08 Plex Employee Sep 02 '26

Do you happen to have multiple servers on your network? Or are you behind a cgnat?

2

u/SamURLJackson Sep 02 '26

Not behind cgnat. This is my only plex server. The same host runs other applications, but downgrading the plex software fixing my issue, to me, means it is the software causing the issue

5

u/chris_decker08 Plex Employee Sep 02 '26

are you willing to reproduce then DM me your logs? you can send them via the plex forums if that makes you more comfortable. We have seen a handful of users reporting this issue but have not (to my knowledge) found anyone willing to work with us to track it down.

1

u/SamURLJackson Sep 02 '26

I updated to the current version yesterday, so if it does show these symptoms again then I will definitely DM you, thank you

4

u/wiser212 Sep 02 '26

If you are running Kometa or anything that uses the same token as Plex, it will advertise as Sync on Plex side. You need to generate a separate token for Kometa and the likes. This was not a problem before but the latest updates have this restriction now.

2

u/SamURLJackson Sep 02 '26

I don't run kometa but I do have some apps that ask for plex tokens so that may be a possible cause, thank you

1

u/nbfs-chili Sep 02 '26

Is this true for tautalli?

1

u/wiser212 Sep 02 '26

Don’t think Tautali uses a token.

-1

u/General_Problem7957 Sep 02 '26

I had the same problem when 1.43.3 first came out. I went back to the previous version of 1.43.2. Until that issue is fixed. I'm not updating.

6

u/solidfreshdope Sep 01 '26

What was the issue?

3

u/primeweevil Sep 02 '26

I run plex locally on a Linux server and have had the same issue. TVs and Roku won’t see the server downstairs even though they are on the same network. 1.43.2.10687 is the only version that continues to work.

Guess I’ll just close up my whole, not like I was sharing with anybody anyway.

3

u/BlackLodgeBrother Sep 02 '26

Same. It’s been such a headache.

1

u/AfterMasterpiece9122 Sep 02 '26

I am also bakc to this version for the same reasons

18

u/mehalywally Sep 02 '26

After the disaster of the fire tv app update, I don't know if I ever want to update Plex again.

I know this is the server and not the player app...

27

u/CIDR-ClassB Sep 02 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

After the disaster of the LastPass breach because an idiot engineer didn’t update a plex instance, I don’t know if I’ll ever delay updating Plex.

You and I may not have the massive troves of data that LastPass lost, but security patches exist for a reason.

19

u/TheSpineless Lifetime Plex Pass since 2014 - hates the new app Sep 02 '26

While Plex maybe have been the tool to breach LastPass, the fact that LastPass allowed unrestricted devices to access their production environment is beyond stupid. That’s some start-up mentality, where being extremely fast and agile are more important than anything else.

4

u/CIDR-ClassB Sep 02 '26

You won’t find me defending them. I worked for their parent company prior to that and the entire place is a dumpster fire.

8

u/ReverendDizzle Sep 02 '26

Was that the attack vector? That’s crazy.

1

u/CIDR-ClassB Sep 02 '26

From some articles about the post mortem, that’s what it sounds like.

Are updates already pushed for docker?

2

u/pandius Sep 02 '26

I actually didn't know that Plex server updates are now available through package manager on a NAS - I was still updating the old fashioned way downloading the update to my desktop and then installing it from there.

Thank you for providing this information.

Did anything break? The last time I updated Plex on my Synology, I had to reconfigure permissions on my media folders.

2

u/vpsj DS224+ | 5 TB | RD Sep 02 '26

This is where having Plex on docker + watchtower comes in handy a lot.

It's just way easier to update and can be as automated and seamless as you want

2

u/Western_Suggestion95 Sep 03 '26

So I’m new to having a plex server and am currently using a UGREEN nas to host mine. How would I apply this update since it says it needs to be installed manually

3

u/sellera Sep 02 '26

i just got the same e-mail, but i'm on 1.43.3.10896.

sudo apt update shows nothing new.

do i have to add another source manually, like some time ago, when we all got disconnected from our servers?

3

u/Krojack76 Sep 02 '26

Yeah I'm also on that version. I run the Docker image lscr.io/linuxserver/plex:latest and it looks like 1.43.3.10896 came out about 2 weeks ago in that image.

2

u/sellera Sep 02 '26

We’re out of the woods, I guess!

2

u/CIDR-ClassB Sep 02 '26

You can check the details for your system from this forum post.

I did, thanks, but i couldn’t find any instructions for my system!

2

u/Mycat8meagain Sep 01 '26

4

I don’t have this option to update

3

u/coyote_den Sep 01 '26

Tl;dr: this email is going out to people who still haven’t updated their servers. If you updated to 1.43.3 in the last couple of weeks you won’t get it. There is no new update.

Yep, same version, no email, no update when you check and the front of their website also states that is the latest version: 1.43.3.10896.

1

u/coyote_den Sep 02 '26

Same. No email, I pulled an updated image as soon as the server told me there was an update. Some who have updated are getting the email anyway.

Plex being plex. They try hard.

Ah, thanks.. I was a little worried, so I checked my server version and it matched. Then I noticed on their site the update was posted Aug 12th, and I had updated a week ago according to my Bash history.

2

u/AlaskanDruid Custom Flair Sep 03 '26

It is unethical to "update" without a complete list of changes.

2

u/modest-pixel Sep 01 '26

What’s special about this update compared to others? Just based on having a life I think I catch every third or fourth update.

18

u/ExtensionMarch6812 Sep 01 '26

In 1.43.3.10861 they noted these two security related fixes which may be related to the issues they note they will provide more details about…

(Security) Address potential vulnerability in the CompanionProxy. (PM-5763)

(Security) The TranscoderH264Options and TranscoderH264OptionsOverride preferences can no longer be modified over the network. (PM-5766)

RFN > PDQ

5

u/wenestvedt Sep 02 '26

PDQ is "pretty darn quick[ly]" -- install it as soon as possible!

A CVE is the standardized description & serial number for a given security vulnerability. (It actually stands for "Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures.")

5

u/Kougeru-Sama Sep 02 '26

I'm older than dirt and have never seen anyone use "pdq"

4

u/modest-pixel Sep 01 '26

Well I also didn’t get the email but I think that might be because I have my email spam filters set to the same sensitivity of my dog looking for squirrels in the yard.

4

u/Tregonia Sep 02 '26

1

Updated before they sent a comm to update and now my plex is broke. Crappy.

3

u/CIDR-ClassB Sep 02 '26

In what way did it break? (So I know what to look out for)

2

u/donjamica Sep 02 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

Just quits. Restart server and it quits. Using a Roku.

2

u/catinterpreter Sep 02 '26

It's annoying that Plex has cultivated enough distrust that I have to wonder if this is a ploy.

4

u/flecom Sep 02 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

yep, I am waiting for the CVEs, if they are not that bad, let it ride! I think I am still on 1.3 something

plex doesn't have access to anything anyway, just RO to my media server

5

u/Mattius14 Sep 02 '26

I can't help but feeling the same way. They pour their ENTIRE effort into trying to siphon my attention away from my own media and toward their live services, removing features that I regularly used -- I actively have reasons to not update.

4

u/catinterpreter Sep 02 '26

Better yet, they routinely sneak feature flags into the server long before they go active. So to avoid unwanted changes, you have to be many versions behind.

u/Ichorous_Allsorts Sep 02 '26

Just wondering about the HDTV app in Windows 11. I've only been using it a few weeks and got it through the app store. Before I'd just download the regular app from the Plex site.

Unless I'm missing something, Microsoft appstore doesn't give an update option in the store, and all I could do was open the already installed app. But it doesn't have an update setting like the old app; at least not that I can see. I've updated my remote server without a problem and I did start some updates in Windows, but I think that's just .NET updates.

Any help from anyone familiar with this HDTV app would be great.

1

u/fattomic Sep 02 '26

Just tried (Fedora, using the offical PlexTV repo) - and it's not there, yet?

1

u/Silent_Zai Sep 02 '26

I updated to this version a week ago, after a year of no updates 😅

1

u/DallasDub94 Sep 02 '26

Updated to this version 2 days ago. Docker on ugreen NAS 🤷🏿‍♂️

1

u/HopelessRespawner Sep 02 '26

Man TOS doesn't update frequently enough, the available version there is still 1.43.1 🫠

1

u/tornade69 Sep 02 '26

There's a few posts on their forum about this. They claim is plex responsability to bring the update to them... On plex website, last version is avalaible for tos 5&6, i'm on 7... Well, i think it's going to take long time, as you said they don't update frequently

1

u/HopelessRespawner Sep 02 '26

Yeah I'm on TOS7 as well, it would be nice to have a manual update option that doesn't just wipe and overwrite your existing install 😑

1

u/tornade69 Sep 02 '26

I should have went with the docker way instead of their apps 🤷

1

u/okayfuckitybye Sep 02 '26

How screwed am I if I can't update this for another 4 weeks? Working very remotely, and apparently the Docker script I did isn't forcing the Plex container to update.

1

u/propho1 Sep 02 '26

Just checked. I'm already on 1.43.3.. Does it matter that there is another update (1.43.3.10896) but I'm on 10861? I'll update it eventually, I just like to wait for a while to see if there are no server breaking issues with it.

It caused me a lot of tediousness the last time when an update caused the database to balloon up to 40-50 GBs

The official plex docker is a bit different than most docker containers. They very very rarely update the image but the image has a built in function that it updates your actual image automatically at startup. So a quick restart will get you the latest and greatest without any additional container update.

I'm cooked, guys... I'm on TOS 7, and there's no update for that OS.

Plex updates have a history of making things worse so I'd really prefer they tell me WHY before I risk breaking shit on a perfectly working version. Does this exploit require remote access? Give us SOMETHING. Updates are too risky in the current era

I hate updating plex, they keep removing stuff and ruining the UI

u/Bonkzzilla Sep 02 '26

This. Every time there's an update, the UI gets worse.

The newest one I thought I heard was getting reversed because of the complaints

I just did the update to the latest PMS (Windows) per the email that was sent out and I had remote access issues with it showing remote access available but with an unknown IP address. Remote client (my phone) could not see the server, but Plex dashboard app could connect fine. I fixed it by signing out of PMS on the Windows PC, rebooting the server, signing back in, then disabling and re-enabling remote access. I also had to log out and back in again on my phone to get a new token. Hopefully this helps anyone who has the same issue.

Do i have to? I'd gladly tithe 10% of my cpu power and bandwidth to a Chinese botnet if I don't have to mess with updates again. 10% botnet passport when?

Sorry, cannot update PMS without know what it is patching. Patching something without a brief description of the issue or solution, and no way to revert back or undo the changes is a big cybersecurity no no 101.

DO NOT UPDATE Mac client away from 1.109, all versions since still have a horrendous unwatchable video bug.

If you accidentally updated your client and are unable to watch any video smoothly, old versions can be found here

Edit: It's not just me, you can suck your downvotes.

lol - I am on the mercy of Synology for any updates on their Plex App.

Do a manual update/install via package center. Download the package for your DSM version from plex and you can install it.

Give this a shot it was just a few clicks for me

Install it manually. I do that for every update.

Watch out for the following change included since 1.43.3.10768:

(Network) IPv6 support has TEMPORARILY been made a plex pass feature (PM-5140)

Ready to move to something open source

3

u/CIDR-ClassB Sep 02 '26

Open source is no less vulnerable to security issues than Plex.

In fact, plex likely dedicates far more money and resources to finding and fixing security issues than Jellyfin or Emby.

u/catinterpreter Sep 02 '26

Plex has a record of inept development. They aren't the crack team you're imagining.

1

u/mikebones Sep 02 '26

You say that very confidentially when we dont know the status of their repository, code scans, pr process, vulnerability scanning, etc etc. Open source is arguably under more scrutiny and active contributors can work towards a better project. Thats why it's no surprise some of the most wildly adopted applications and software trusted by enterprises far bigger than plex not only rely on open source, but also open source their own projects.

My server is almost always up to date. It is a trivial process and never seems to break anything (recently) on Mac. Why wouldn’t you?
