Job Search Discussion Research volunteering/Ways to get into research after BScN

• Upvotes

I recently graduated from my BScN program and got my license. However, unfortunately I didn’t have any research experience during my undergraduate program and now I want to get involved. Aside from volunteering, are there any other ways to build research experience as a beginner outside of school?

Job Search Discussion Has anyone just bravely quit a job they hate?

RN with 4 years of ED experience. Dropped from full time to part time (plus casually working at a family clinic but they don’t pay as well) and now currently on parental leave. Trouble is, I really, really, really don’t want to go back to ED or even inpatient after my leave ends.

Considering going the NP or masters route but not sure how being in school will fit with family planning, potentially going back part time ED, etc etc. I’m thinking I might just quit and apply to miscellaneous non-hospital / LTC jobs, but I’m afraid to.

Not in the GTA, so I’m worried that there will be less opportunities here. Spouse can financially support us either way, but will of course take a hit financially either way so I’m not sure.

Just want to hear people’s experience with feeling burnt out and braving the current job climate.

Nursing School Nursing Transformation: RPN to BScN OntarioLearn

I'm looking into doing the OntarioLearn RPN to BScN nursing transformation for bridging. I'm curious to know people's experiences with the 6 bridging courses and doing it while working full time. Were the courses easy and were you guys able to get accepted into year 3/semester 5 at an affiliated school?

Nursing School Took my REx-PN today, got all 150 questions, and feel like I failed. Anyone else?

I wrote my REx-PN today, October 21, and honestly, I feel terrible about it.
I studied for almost a month. Before my exam, I got Pass on NurseAchieve CAT and On Track (85th percentile) on UWorld CAT.
But the actual exam felt so much harder than both. I got all 150 questions and finished with over an hour remaining.
At first, I felt okay, but the questions seemed to get harder and harder. Most of the time, I could eliminate two answers but struggled to choose between the remaining two. I also had unfamiliar medical terminology and medications.
Now I keep remembering questions I probably got wrong, and it’s making me feel like I failed. I was mentally exhausted toward the end, but I tried my best to stay focused.
I’m waiting for my CNO results, and the anxiety is honestly terrible.
Has anyone passed the REx-PN on their FIRST attempt with all 150 questions, even though they felt like they were guessing most of the exam?
Please share your experience. I’m looking for honest answers, not just reassurance.

Job Search Discussion Sunnybrook References

Has anyone applied to Sunnybrook recently as a nurse? Was just wondering what their requirements are for references. For example, if one of the references have to be a current manager. Or if I will need to find a supervisor to be a reference, or if preceptors/clinical instructors/colleagues are fine. I'm thinking of applying, but am afraid of my current management finding out that I am trying to look for another job. Thanks in advance.

Nursing School RPN Operating Room

Hi there,
I’m moving to Ontario next month as an LPN/RPN who has worked solely in LTC for the last 7 years. I was planning on applying to Humber’s OR program but it appears I need to have previous acute care/employer recommendation in order to apply. Does anybody know of any other OR programs I could apply to that do not require this?

General non job search discussion How safe are jobs outside the hospital?

I’m in the gta and have only ever worked in large hospitals, both as a student and an extern but only places hiring atm are home care or private companies. How safe are these places for beginners, I want to work and need to work due to my finances atm lol but im very scared to be in a non hospital environment and potentially 1 on 1 with zero support.

Even in consolidation when my preceptor couldn’t do somthing she could easily get another nurse or someone else to help but me with no experience im very afraid to lose my license or hurt someone. Am I overthinking it or are they just as safe as the hospital?

General non job search discussion Mount Sinai L&D

Hi everyone! I have an upcoming interview at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto for a Labour and Delivery RN position, and I was hoping someone might be able to share some advice!
I haven’t had a direct Labour and Delivery placement, but I do have some adjacent clinical experience in NICU and postpartum, along with experience working in paediatrics.
I’m really excited about the opportunity and would love to hear from anyone who has interviewed for L&D, whether at Mount Sinai or another Ontario hospital. Are there any specific clinical topics, scenarios, or interview questions you’d recommend preparing for?
I’d really appreciate any advice. Thank you!!

Nursing School To NP or not to NP

I’ve been an RN, primarily working in public health with a focus on communicable disease control for the 7 years since graduating nursing school. I haven’t used any acute care nursing skills since being a student. Lately, I’ve been more interested in the idea of being an autonomous provider for patients diagnosed with infectious diseases (STI’s and TB in particular). I find that my critical thinking and analytical skills could be better utilized as an NP. Once I started looking into NP programs and jobs, I saw the NP demand is still PCP-focused which I am not interested in pursuing, nor do I have the background/experience in that area. I’m worried that if I were to end up pursing this major career change, I’d get pigeonholed into working as a PCP. I also don’t know NPs in my professional life so hoping to get advice from one :)

Nursing School OR course at Conestoga college

Is anyone taking it currently or has taken this course in the past? I’m wondering how difficult it is to get into? It looks like you need to write a letter and have work references to be accepted to the program. Once you’re in the program, how much of it is in person vs online? Are you/did you enjoy the program? Thank you

Job Search Discussion RPN pay

Hi all!
I got hired at one of the big hospitals in the GTA and the RPN pay is different from other positions posted under the same union. Just curious, is there a reason for this? Why am I getting $1 or $2 less than other RPNs working within the same union regardless of experience?
