If you are experiencing removals, this is most likely because your account is new and you have no karma, and therefore you are running into community restrictions.

Short answer: it depends on the sub, and most of them don't tell you.

There are roughly three patterns in the wild — combined karma (post + comment added together), comment karma only (common where mods got tired of low-effort posters), and account-age gates that stack on top of whatever karma number they use.

The safe move is to get to 10+ comment karma, because that clears both the combined version and the comment-only version. It's also the faster number to build: a genuinely useful reply in a small sub can pick up 5-10 upvotes within an hour or two.

And if you get auto-removed anyway, read the removal message carefully — it usually names the exact rule the automod applied. That message is the only reliable spec, since requirements aren't published anywhere central.

Thanks. The sub rules don't go into details but I was thinking it must be comment karma.

They probably mean just the combined karma total

Core Types of karma. The main types of karma you'll see referenced on Reddit are:

  1. (Combined) Karma (comment and posts on all of reddit)
  2. Post karma (karma only from posts on reddit)
  3. Comment karma (karma only from comments on reddit)

What Karma to Build Generally you want to focus just on 1. Combined Karma since that is the main metric most requirements use. The easiest way to build that I think is 3.Comment karma.

Rule 6: Refrain from asking for votes or karma, naming free karma subs, or sharing how you are voting

  • Please do not ask for karma or votes here, it is against our rules and is generally discouraged as karma is meant to be earned. See Our common questions to learn how to earn karma.

  • We do not allow mentions of free karma subs (karmafarms) or any suggestion to use them, and caution against their use because it may lead to bans in other subreddits.

  • Thank you for trying to help, but please don't share how you have or are voting. We encourage earning karma genuinely from relevant comments and conversation. Asking for karma is discouraged as it violates our subreddit rules.

The Reddiquette also discourages mentioning your vote or asking for votes.

Thank you!
