I’ve been making beats for about a year and a half, and I feel like I’ve gotten pretty decent at it. I’ve learned piano and spent a lot of time developing my production skills. My goal has always been to become a sort of one man army, capable of creating music from the ground up and developing a sound that’s uniquely mine.
The problem is that I have no idea how to turn my instrumentals into actual songs.
Whenever I sit down to write or record vocals, I get stuck. I don’t know what to sing about, how to approach melodies, or how to articulate what I want to express. I’ve become so focused on making my instrumentals sound good on their own that I struggle to figure out where vocals fit into the picture.
Recording and mixing is another issue. I have a Rode condenser mic, but my vocals always seem to come out distorted, choppy, muddy, or just bad in general. I’ve watched countless tutorials, but everyone seems to have a different approach, and the endless plugins and techniques are becoming overwhelming.
Honestly, I feel like I’m lacking direction. I want to develop my own identity as an artist, not just as a producer, but I’m not sure what to focus on or where to start.
For those of you who started as beatmakers and eventually learned to make complete songs, how did you make that transition?
How did you learn to write lyrics, find melodies, record and mix vocals, and develop your identity as an artist? Did you approach everything at once or focus on one skill at a time?
I’m willing to put in the work, I just feel a little lost on what that work should look like. I’d appreciate any advice or personal experiences that might help me find my footing.
