Admin Replied Automoderator code for new community

I worked on automoderator codes for low combined karma, low subreddit karma, and images being posted by low/negative karma accounts but I got an error before I could save it. Apparently, automoderator codes have been disabled from new communities that have never used automoderator codes before. But my community is a year old.

Of course I have strong filters activated and automations, but is this how Reddit works now?

yeah if that doesn't work for you, try using automod neo instead. That's what I did for my community (PS : reddit sucks for implementing the change, i hate how automod is mostly useless)

Yeah, they killed it off for new subs. You're basically screwed if you aren't already using it, but it won't be long until we are all in the same boat. Some of us just have a little bit longer with usable tools.

Wonderful news 🫥😅

The functionality won't be replicated - they don't want us doing those things anymore. Perhaps automod neo will stick around, or perhaps they will eventually target that too.

Filters work really well but occasionally they don’t work properly somehow. A couple of rude first time posters and two spammers already made in

I got frustrated and forgot to install the anti-ai app. We are a history related sub so we have been receiving some AI content as well.

I don't think you are understand what Emily is saying. It will not be long until automod does not do what it needs to do and many, many mods are just going to give up on Reddit.

That is not the good thing you might think it is.

Do we really need to add /s all the time at the end of a sentence to avoid being lectured lol. 😆 I was being sarcastic Mr Maximum Jones

Mansplaining is rude

Wow, so is misandry. 😳

Sorry for being a bit late, but just wanted to let you know AutoMod Neo will be staying around. That was created using Devvit, and I believe Reddit is actually encouraging moderators to use Devvit, which is one of the reasons they are trying to get rid of classic AutoMod. Only a few very specific classic AutoMod features aren't supported.

Yes, basically. You can use automod Neo

Thank you for sharing. Duly noted.

Install automod-neo to your sub here, it works exactly the same automod in rule enforcement and uses the same YAML code https://developers.reddit.com/apps/automod-neo

Hi. We announced in this post that there were going to be some changes to automod.

For newly created communities and communities that have never used automod, automod enforcement capabilities – specifically Report, Filter, Remove, Mark as spam, and Approve – will be disabled and Rules Hub and Automations will become the default path for rules enforcement. Automod’s non-enforcement capabilities remain available and unchanged.

u/nullifiedsam 1d ago

Rules Hub's AI enforcement is not accurate at all, it flags comments/posts that don't break rules, I stopped using it months ago. Automations is somewhat better because you manually figure out and wire the logic together so that there wouldnt be any mistakes in modding

Hey! Thanks for the heads up! First I'm hearing of this, so I'll find someone to take a look!

12

u/nullifiedsam 1d ago

when it was first introduced to some subreddits for "testing" i think many users reported the issue? anyways I don't know what it's like now, I will have to use it again for checking

2

u/TheOpusCroakus Reddit Admin: Community 1d ago

I'm asking around right now, so I'll report back when I know something. Appreciate you bringing it up!

Rules Hub is hallucinating, I can't even turn it on for my "No Profanity", "No NSFW", or "No Hate, Harassment, and Brigading" rules as it marked it as "we can't enforce rules that have to do with post flair"or something like that but somehow it can enforce my "Limited Promotional Post" that actually requires to know about timezone which is handled better by the automod-neo and it does actually requires post flair and user flairs... the one thing that Rules Hub said is unable to act on 😂

3

u/TheOpusCroakus Reddit Admin: Community 1d ago

The team that's in charge of this feature would like to know what subreddit this is happening in.

12

u/WalkingEars 1d ago

Is the rules hub LLM based? LLMs are not deterministic the way automod coding could be, and LLMs are also often huge wastes of electricity. It’s very frustrating to feel essentially forced to rely on this technology that in many ways is fundamentally misrepresented by those with financial incentive to hype it up

3

u/Ok-Commercial3640 1d ago

With rules being written in plain language, I don't see how it could be otherwise. (Maybe, at best, an LLM trained specifically to convert plain text into checks and actions, that does that task once on activation of the rules hub, and then a deterministic system uses that for enforcement, but then... that's just automod with the human removed from the loop

5

u/emily_in_boots 💡 Top 10% Helper 💡 1d ago

Rules hub is LLM based. It’s meant to intelligently interpret the rules and enforce them, not just follow specific text. The text filtering function of automod will be partially replicated via post and comment guidance, although those are far less powerful. It will allow filtering certain words to queue (no filtering yet but that is supposed to be added). A lot of the more complex aspects of automod will not be replicated though.

I don't actually know! I could try to find out, though!

Would have loved a bit of a heads up before it happened. I know it’s not your fault, but can you give that feedback that reddit didnt give anyone a chance to add it before removing the feature. Thanks.

3

u/Merari01 15h ago

They did that on purpose.

It's absolutely deliberate they enforced it just before announcing it.

It's also on purpose that they lied when they said they wouldn't restrict automod before replacement tools were up to standard.

The replacement tools can't even do 5% of automod functionality and they took it away anyway.

So do not expect any of its current functionality to come to the new system.

We. Are. SOL

u/Froggypwns 2h ago

I don't think it is a coincidence they killed off the mod council before rolling out changes like this.

I get where you're coming from! I'll tell 'em. =/

And is there someplace where we can voice displeasure with this?

Thanks! Side note, but can you check on a ticket you all haven’t answered yet? It’s from July 15th which is an incredibly long time to wait for a response. (No idea why this didn’t post as a reply and went to theOP lol)

u/TheOpusCroakus Reddit Admin: Community 1d ago

I don't generally work that side of the street in ModSupport. If you have a question, feel free to send a mod mail message to this sub.

6

u/RandomComments0 💡Top 25% Helper 💡 1d ago

There’s the rub lol. I did post my question related to moderation, but it was removed. I sent a mod mail about it too and it was ignored. I just kinda gave up, but you seem more interested in helping so I figured a shot in the dark!

I see you and Max responding the most here, which we all appreciate.

You generally seem like the everything admin, you seem to have a finger in every pie! (complimentary!)

3

u/TheOpusCroakus Reddit Admin: Community 1d ago

Thank you! I love pie! lol

3

u/Nanakurokonekochan 1d ago

Thank you. I guess I should have activated it a month ago.

u/TheOpusCroakus Reddit Admin: Community 1d ago

You may want to try using automod neo that u/SampleOfNone and u/nullfiedsam suggested.

14

u/fsv 1d ago

Is this Admin endorsement? Wow!

7

u/TheOpusCroakus Reddit Admin: Community 1d ago

Devvit can do a lot of stuff and I am here for it! I didn't know that was yours, but I'm not surprised! lol

9

u/nullifiedsam 1d ago

even the admins don't like the recent change /s

12

u/fsv 1d ago

I first heard rumours months ago that something might happen to Automod, so I started work on Neo at that point. I'm so glad that I was able to make something stable in time for the changes.

3

u/nullifiedsam 1d ago

that's cool, can neo do everything that automod used to do? i only use it for removing posts/comments for users that have low comment karma or account age

7

u/fsv 1d ago

Nearly. There are a few things that it can't do like CQS, Temporary Events, Media Description checks and OC checks/actions. Most rules can be used as-is without any changes. You can see the full readme here: https://developers.reddit.com/apps/automod-neo

6

u/RandomComments0 💡Top 25% Helper 💡 1d ago

Can’t do it yet you mean. I appreciate you!

5

u/fsv 1d ago

I’m relying on changes to the dev platform for the gaps, if it was possible right now I’d have made the changes already!

You have to remember that admins we talk to are not all in agreement on everything - they are just different people who work for reddit and they have their own opinions, but when commenting as admins, they have to toe the party line. Many admins didn’t support adding mod limits and many probably don’t support removing automod (though I don’t know that for sure). So don’t hate on the individual people who have to explain the policies - think of your own workplace and the last time someone implemented some really bad policy and you couldn’t really voice public opposition to it - you just had to accept it. That’s how it is with them too.

These changes that are killing moderation on reddit are coming from very high up based on driving shareholder value through increased engagement and due to paranoia about scraping data affecting profit. Even spez answers to shareholders now. This is just the way of things, even if it sucks.

2

u/Nanakurokonekochan 1d ago

I like the one with the cat, the admin with the cat seems nice

1

u/Nanakurokonekochan 1d ago

Thanks I’ll look into that

Just asking, sorry if it is a dumb question/doubt but is using automod neo to auto remove links to external servers commented by sub members that the sub is not currently partnered with considered legal on reddit, like are moderators officially allowed to program the automod neo app to do that?

3

u/TheOpusCroakus Reddit Admin: Community 1d ago

I'm not totally sure that I understand the question.

But moderators are allowed to remove content within their sub, as long as they're operating in good faith under the Moderator Code of Conduct.

1

u/Wonderful_Stay9503 18h ago edited 17h ago

Sorry maybe I should have worded my previous reply better, but can you check if the following code that I am thinking to run on automod neo is allowed by reddit or not, what I am trying to achieve is basically auto remove invite links to servers that the sub is not partnered with, in this case automod neo removes every invite link that does not have my invite code on it i.e. Ab....3, I didn't find anything mentioned in MCOC about this and I am new to automod stuff so I am not sure if reddit allows mods to automate such removals where I program neo to remove everything other than my own server, so I thought I should gain permission from official ADMINS before I try to actually implement this

```
Rule: Remove external Discord links but allow our own server
type: comment body (includes): ["discord.gg", "discord.com/invite", "://discordapp.com"] ~body (includes): ["Ab....3"] # invite code of my server, the one I am partnered with currently moderators_exempt: false action: remove action_reason: "External Discord invite link removed" comment: | Hello {{author}}, your comment has been removed.
We do not allow external links or any self promotional links here. If you have any queries regarding this removal or wish to ask for explicit permission, please contact the mod team via Modmail.
``` Like will this be considered abuse of automod neo's power, since I am basically auto removing everything other than my own server, should I refrain from programming it like this ? Or are mods allowed to do such things ?

Since I was confused with this, so I thought I should reach out to an admin to seek clarity on this matter

Hello u/TheOpusCroakus, extremely sorry I don't wanna disturb admins in any way but can you please take a look at my this updated reply above about automod neo, and give me some insights on this please. Thanks in advance

u/emily_in_boots 💡 Top 10% Helper 💡 1d ago

I don’t totally get your question but you are allowed to use automod neo to remove any content you like at this time. If you want to remove links, have at it.
