Welcome to Bahrain Malaysia 🇲🇾, F1 folks!
If you’re coming to Sepang this weekend for the race, Selamat Datang and Welcome! You came for the F1, but we strongly recommend you stay for the makan.
Malaysia is a small country, but our food scene is quite serious. We have Malay, Chinese, Indian, Peranakan and many other food traditions all living together. And somehow all of us have strong opinions about where to find and what constitutes the best version. 😆
You can makan at a roadside stall, kopitiam, mamak, pasar malam, hawker centre or fancy restaurant. Sometimes the best food is served in a shop that looks like it hasn't changed since 1987. A reliable rule of thumb is if there is queue of locals, that stall is good.

If this is your first time in Malaysia, start with these:
Nasi Lemak:
Our unofficial national obsession. Coconut rice, sambal, ikan bilis, peanuts and egg. Add ayam goreng (fried chicken) or ayam/daging rendang (chicken/beef rendang) if you're hungry.
Roti Canai:
Flaky, crispy, oily in the best possible way. Eat with dhal or curry. Perfect breakfast. Perfect supper. Actually, perfect anytime.
Try Roti Tissue and Roti Pisang too (variants of Roti Canai). By the way, the pronunciation is char-nai not car-nai.
Satay:
Grilled skewers with peanut sauce. Easy introduction to Malaysian food and dangerously easy to finish 10 sticks without realising.
Char Kway Teow:
Flat rice noodles wok-fried with that smoky wok hei. If you see someone cooking it over a roaring flame, pay attention.
Laksa:
Important: there isn't just ONE laksa. Curry laksa, asam laksa, Sarawak laksa, Laksa Lemak, Laksa Johor and others all taste quite different. Go explore.
Nasi Kandar:
Rice drowning gloriously in different curries. Add your choice of meat and sides. The more kuah, the better.
Banana Leaf Rice:
Rice served on a banana leaf with vegetables, curries and various sides. Eat with your hands if you're comfortable, it's part of the experience (just remember to wash your hands thoroughly beforehand).
Teh Tarik:
Pulled tea, sweet and frothy. Best enjoyed at a mamak while lepak.
Cendol / Ais Kacang:
Because Malaysia is hot and you will probably need something cold after walking around KL. PS: 'ais kacang' is pronounced 'ice car-chang' not 'ice car-kangaroo'
-
Some areas worth checking out:
Kampung Baru: Malay food right in the middle of KL's skyscrapers.
Petaling Street / Chinatown: Lots of Chinese-Malaysian food and old-school kopitiam vibes.
Brickfields: Malaysian Indian food, banana leaf rice, dosa, roti, curries and more.
Pudu: Plenty of old-school hawker and kopitiam food.
Chow Kit: Markets, hawker food and proper local neighbourhood vibes.
Jalan Alor / Bukit Bintang: Touristier, yes, but convenient if you're staying around the city centre and want to see KL at night.
Bangsar: Mix of Malaysian food, cafés, restaurants and nightlife.
And don't be afraid to get out of the tourist areas. Some of the best makan spots are just in ordinary neighbourhoods. Follow the crowd, look for a busy kopitiam, and see what everyone else is ordering.
Please refer to the recommendations by our MalaysianFood sifus in the comments below.

While Malaysians are conversant in English, but dropping a few words will definitely earn you some smiles.
“Makan!” : Eat / food. Also used as an invitation: Come, let's eat!
“Sedap!” : Delicious! Your most important word.
“Berapa?” : How much?
“Nak ini.” 👉 : I want this. Very useful when pointing at something delicious.
“Terima Kasih.” : Thank you. (Literally means I receive your love)
"Pedas" means spicy. And yes, sometimes it really means spicy. If you dont want it spicy, say 'Tak nak pedas'.
-
If you have dietary restrictions, ask before ordering. Malaysia has halal, non-halal, vegetarian and many other options.
And one important thing:
Don't assume every Malaysian dish is the same everywhere.
Ask Malaysians what the "real" version is and you'll probably get 17 different answers. That's also part of the fun.
-
If you're Malaysian or a regular KL foodie, drop your recommendations below for our F1 visitors.

Let's show our F1 visitors what Malaysia is really about.

To everyone visiting this weekend:
Selamat datang, welcome, and enjoy your makan! 🇲🇾❤️

Thin raw slices of pork blanched in the broth so it cooked perfectly. Still tender and slippery. I opted for dry style noodles on the side. Sambal was so good and packed a punch

It is my birthday today 20.10.19xx. I am thankful I am alive, although I'm sick. I hope I can hold on for another year.
I got so much to say but what's the point. Dear self, thank you. You've been strong. Just...don't give up. Don't commit to temptation of ending your life.

I wanted to know what people order at Oriental Kopi, so AI read 1,497 random Google reviews. It also read 856 one- and two-star reviews to see what goes wrong. My own project.
What I found:
- The egg tart is named in nearly 1 in 5 reviews (295 of 1,497), more than any coffee (223). Then nasi lemak (170), toast (94) and the polo bun (81).
- Toast gets the fewest complaints. Of the 94 reviews that name it, 4 complain about it and 77 praise it. The other four dishes sit at 12% to 14%.
- Happy reviews praise the food most (63%), then the drinks (14%) and the room (13%).
- The catch is the service. Of the unhappy reviews AI read, 62% blame the service and 31% the food. The top complaint is food that came slowly, in 27% of the 856.
- In 2022, 39% of unhappy reviews complained about the taste. In 2026, 13%. Slow food went from 19% to 31%, and rude staff from 9% to 23%.
- Its most-reviewed outlet is in Bandar Puteri, Puchong (3,617 reviews). Its reviews praise the room nearly twice as often as the next 9 outlets.
- Its best-rated is Queensbay Mall in Penang, 4.8.
How I did it: code pulled every Google review of every outlet on 18 October. AI read 1,497 random reviews from before 13 October for dishes and praise, and 856 one- and two-star reviews for complaints. A second AI read checked samples. Only 73 unhappy reviews from 2022 were read, so that year is a rough guide. Reviews show what people wrote, not what most people order.
What do you order there?

I’ve been messing around in my kitchen learning to cook eggs. Some of the results seem to look ok but I’m still working on my consistency, for example, trying to get the omelettes in a perfect roll, managing the heat etc… but one of the most annoying things to get right is poached eggs.
Because I want to try to scale this, sous vide poached eggs seem to give the most consistent results but still depend greatly on the freshness of the eggs.
My best results have been through using QL eggs day 1 egg delivery service… but the eggs took 4 days to arrive (some broken) and at 28.50 for 30, it’s very expensive. And I really want to try getting real farm fresh eggs at a fair price..
Does anyone know of good egg suppliers who can guarantee freshness, or better yet farms where I can go myself to pick up some good quality eggs?

KL cake reviews keep praising staff by name. I wanted to know how many, and what those reviews tell you.
So I had AI read 1,200 random reviews of 2,810 cake shops, bakeries and cafés with cakes around the Klang Valley: 600 from 2018 and 2019, and 600 from 2025 and 2026.
Short answer: they give more 5 stars and say less about the food.
What I found:
- 72 of the 600 recent reviews praise a staff member by name (a staff shout-out). In 2018 and 2019, 4 of 600 did.
- Staff come up in 45 of 100 reviews now, up from 27. The cake or food: 43, about the same as before (46).
- Reviews that praise staff by name give 5 stars 93% of the time. Other recent reviews: 78%.
- Only 23% of them say anything about the food. Other recent reviews: 46%.
- Chain outlets get more than their share: 44% of the shout-outs, against 28% of all recent reviews. The shout-outs came from 46 different places.
- Cafés not known for cake went the same way: 66 of 600 recent reviews praise staff by name, up from 3.
- Five stars got easier everywhere, so a 5-star shout-out tells you even less. From 2018 and 2019 to 2025 and 2026, the 5-star share went from 47% to 82% at cake places, 48% to 82% at cafés, 55% to 91% at car workshops, and 34% to 59% at mamaks.
- None of the 1,200 reviews says the shop asked for it. So the reviews can't tell me why this happened. Maybe service really got better.
So when I pick a cake shop, I'd read the reviews that say what someone ate and how it tasted.
How I did it: code pulled every Google review of the 2,810 places (531,550 reviews, up to 16 October 2026) and counted the stars, and the same for cafés, car workshops and mamaks from my other studies. AI read the random 1,200, plus 1,200 café reviews the same way, and marked whether each one names a staff member, talks about the staff, or says something about the food. Every cake review it marked as naming staff was read again: all of them name someone who works there and praise or thank that person. With 600 reviews a period, a few points either way is noise.
Has a cake shop or café ever asked you for a review? What did they say?
