Good Vibes POV: Buzz Lightyear realizing that we can sign.

It's even more special when you think about the fact that deaf people are some of the only people that get to talk with the characters like this. Everyone else just get mimed at because the cast members aren't allowed to talk with their voice.
Core memory for these kids
EDIT: Corrected my wording
208
u/Dadittude182 2h ago
That rule applies for the characters wearing costumes if animated characters. My daughter had a fairly long discussion about the Force and female Force users with Ahsoka Tano in Galaxy's Edge. We also had a good dialogue with Red Guardian as well because my daughter's favorite character is Yelena, which promoted a hilarious back and forth.
But, you're not wrong. As someone who works with with deaf and hard-of-hearing folks, you're absolutely correct about this being a core memory for these kids. Good for them, and good for the actors for learning how to sign.
92
u/FederalWedding4204 1h ago
If they are a “fur” character they don’t talk, but if they are a “face” character, they do.
Basically if you can see their human face, they talk, otherwise they don’t.
14
u/chicklette 1h ago
Yep, Mirabel and I once discussed the varying levels of coolness of our glasses. Only the coolest kids are wearing them, you know.
2
u/indiegogold 1h ago
Is there a reason for this? These actors are pretty talented right? Can't they do the voice
10
4
u/FederalWedding4204 1h ago
A lot of them (if not most) do both, so yes they can. I imagine they just standardized on no voices. I honestly can’t say why. Good question
Maybe because you wouldn’t hear them clearly through the suit. You can solve that now with microphones and speakers, but I guess now it’s just the standard not to
4
u/SymmetricalFeet 38m ago edited 34m ago
That, but also it's not necessarily someone who even can mimic the "canon" voice.
For all we know, in the OP, there is a woman with a high-pitched voice in the Buzz suit who could never sound like Tim Allen. But this is an advantage for Disney because you can put any person who fits the suit out into the park, rather than having to narrow selection (hiring, scheduling) down like they have to physically do with the face characters. Someone who is a dead-on Gaston won't pass as Belle, but if they're about the right height ehhhhh they both fit in a Pooh/Buzz/Minnie/&c. suit.

Somebody replied after you, and I have no idea if this is actually the reason, but it would be beautifully simplistic if it is:
The mouths on the costume don't move!
1
u/indiegogold 46m ago
The other person said its because the mouths don't move and it makes so much sense
9
u/Dev0psDude 1h ago
The face characters are selected for their ability to interact like that with guests. There is a pretty narrow set of topics they'll stay on but they're damn good at it. Wendy and Peter Pan were particularly memorable for my family. She was absolutely manic, telling story after story, clearly made up as she went along, for 20 minutes straight.

Ahsoka Tano was an animated character.
Pretty sure you're wrong about something here.

Mind blown.

u/MeltyCrab 48m ago
Sucks the character actors are all paid like shit. The effort and difficulty of the job should be an easy 50-60k/yr salary starting. They make close to minimum wage.

u/MischiefRatt 2h ago
That's super interesting. I've seen this video a lot and never thought of that before.

Fyi, the preferred term "deaf" or "hard of hearing," not "hearing impaired."
7
u/TheWaningWizard 2h ago
Ahhh okay, my fault, I had it switched then. I thought "deaf people" sounded more insensitive than how I worded it. I'll edit now, thanks for correcting me

People tend to not realize the deaf community take pride in their difference and many would take offense at the idea that they are disabled.
For example when I was learning about sign languages we were told this joke to illustrate the difference:
Jesus walks into a joint and sees three guys sitting at the bar. The first guy is blind, Jesus touches him and to his surprise, he squeals “ now I can see”. The guy next to him is deaf. He receives the touch and in delight says “now I can hear.” The third guy is sitting quietly when Jesus is about to reach over and place his hand on him. He darts out of the way and says, “don’t touch me man, I’m on disability!”
There's also a massive debate about the ethnicacy of hearing aides as they effectively destroy the signing community, who very much see themselves as a linguistic group.

u/my_name_is_juice 1h ago
This seems like a silly one to get upset over, why is hearing impaired offensive?

u/Flyingcento 2h ago
I really appreciate how qualified many of these guys are. So wholesome.
162
u/Moon_Flowers420 2h ago
and not paid enough, for sure
23
u/Amori_A_Splooge 2h ago
What are they paid?
54
u/dont-trust-mr-orange 2h ago
Disneyland character performers are paid around $24 to $26 per hour with premiums of up to $4.75 more for some roles, like if you are a "face" character (they show their own faces to play the character). Walt Disney World character performers are paid less.
29
u/wheniswhy 1h ago
That is abysmal considering the COL in SoCal and how uncomfortable and cumbersome those costumes must be in the hot weather. Jfc. These people do it for the love of the game and I respect the hell out of that, but also, Disney, you could triple these folks' pay and it would be a fucking rounding error in your yearly revenue, cmon.
14
u/RivenRise 1h ago
A lot of them also either have higher education or are working on it. I'm a highschool graduate chud and work as a glorified scheduler at a cozy office and i make about the same as they do while having a way easier job, also in cali. It's unfortunate.

u/Ihatereddithatesit 36m ago edited 31m ago
Do a job that you love, follow your calling to make a difference, and get exploited and underpaid for the privilege. The arts are a sick disgusting place in that way. I know very few people that both are able to stay in jobs like this and keep their soul. Most middle aged people in the arts are either suffering or outright the worst people imaginable. Exceptions are rare. Mostly everybody else get used up.

21
u/Moon_Flowers420 2h ago
idk, but considering their work conditions, and that it's fucking Disney, not enough.
8
u/redditsellout-420 2h ago
From what i understand not much more then normal acceptable wage ($15 per hour)
Far from what these people deserve, they literally give it their all.

u/ThrowingShaed 9m ago
that was like my first thought even though ive never been a place like this and dont really know
29
u/EveryDisaster 1h ago
Fun fact, Disney offers ASL classes to their cast members specifically for this reason :)
2
u/Ihatereddithatesit 40m ago
A problem also exist if they're too 'good'. They get cycled out of roles if they become too popular and recognizable. As a performer you must be good, but not noteworthy enough that people specifically post about you rather then the character. It's a very delicate tightrope and actually very demanding talentwise to do so.
•
u/mattcoady 13m ago
Side question, how do they see out of those costumes. It doesn't look like it has an obvious lookout area.
•
u/ThrowingShaed 10m ago
theres a lot of cool people out there and a lot of people really good at their jobs and some days its easy for me to forget that a bit

You can't see the facial expression of the person but from the body language, Buzz seemed so excited when he realised he could speak to them in sign

This is the whole point of Disneyland. Not the rides, not the photos… it’s moments like this where the characters actually connect with the kids.

Last time I I went to Disney, I saw Pluto and as a 30 year oldest guy went all over up hipply hopping mode to hug them! It was the best, we had a little dance and my day was great.

ASL should be taught in all north american schools by default and I'll die on that hill
19
u/SnoopySuited 2h ago
Achieving 'fluency' can be difficult, but both my kids learned the basics and could communicate after literally one class period.
2
u/wetfloor666 2h ago
I was taught it 30 or so years ago in school and all my kids were taught it as well within the last decade. Regional thing maybe? I am in Canada myself, so not sure if that is a factor.
2
u/Mobile_Morale 1h ago
Definitely regional. At my highschool you could graduate with several certifications. I graduated as a journeyman carpenter right out of school. Also took agriculture and cut off a calfs balls for a test.
Also could become a nurse right out of school from the nursing program.
I've talked to a ton of people who's school only offered basic classes and nothing additional.
I like to hit them with "I drove a tractor for a test grade" to show our school difference.
1
u/KahBhume 1h ago
I took one class in college, and even that little bit would let me communicate similar to Buzz here. Very basic, but can really make an impact to a deaf person!
2
u/Secure-Persimmon-421 2h ago
I’m with you! I hoped we would all learn ASL during Covid. But people are lazy. (I’m from the USA.)
2
u/mtheory007 2h ago
My partner has been in early child care for a very long time. Before children have their first words, they are often able to sign wants and needs that she teaches them. She teaches the ASL signs for those things. It would be great if that was carried on and expanded throughout their lives and taight in schools.
77
u/MuchoRed 2h ago
Dude was SUPER excited about signing with that kid
11
21
u/JC_Hysteria 1h ago
Well, Buzz is either deaf himself…or he used his own time to learn a new language for other people- like this kid!
Must be nice to see it bring a smile…

u/sunshinecunt 15m ago
Children of deaf adults (CODAs) are also extremely proficient at signing. That would be my guess.
1
u/ishigyoudig 1h ago
masked characters aren't allowed to speak so having a convo by signing is a cool loophole that they probably enjoy being able to take advantage of

u/mca1169 2h ago

Man this pulls at the heart strings. The look on that kids face when they started signing, he just started glowing and opening up. That will be a core memory for him.

u/Moon_Flowers420 2h ago
10000%, that actor isn't paid enough.
You ever watch Papa Meat's video on Disney actors? That's some hard work.
17
u/cire1184 2h ago
None of them are. Disney is notorious for under paying and especially fur characters versus face characters. They just take advantage of people that live Disney and think their dream job is being a Disney character at the parks.
11
u/Fearless_Dependent29 2h ago
Christ you can tell this person works there purely to brighten up people’s days, I agree with all the comments this person 1,000,000,000% deserves a raise but I think they’re happy just seeing the smiles from beautiful interactions like these

I want to learn to sign just to hold basic conversation. Just don't know where and how to practice it.
Also I learned that ASL in Australia is completely different to what's practiced in other places like the US, although I don't know if there are similarities!
13
u/The_Late_Arthur_Dent 1h ago
Yes Auslan (Australian sign language) is its own language completely separate from English and ASL. I don't know any resources but I bet the good folks at /r/auslan can help!
For anyone looking to learn ASL, I highly recommend lifeprint.com and the lessons taught by Deaf instructor, Dr. Bill Vicars!
7
u/A_Curious_Skeptic_ 2h ago
Yes, the ‘A’ in ASL stands for American, so ASL is American Sign Language, specifically. This blew my mind when I first realized lol.

Buzz learning to sign just to connect with them is such a sweet moment. The little boy agreeing that she’s beautiful made it even better.

Love this - since characters can’t talk with their voices, it’s nice to see them communicate, albeit silently. Very cool they know ASL

realistically, how long would it take to carry a conversation in ASL?
•
u/Key-Championship5998 2m ago
It is kind of like typing. For those that it is their first language or are conversationally fluent, it is the same speed as talking (with the normal range of slow drawl to caffeinated squirrel chittering). For those who are learning or don't get lots of practice it can be very slow. A fun thing to look up is Rap God in ASL. The translator matches the pace 1:1 for the whole song.
