Winning off of vibes and millennial love lol

161

u/thrussie 9h ago

She has to be a stunt casting. Next episode, cameo from Matt Damon in spy themed dance. I’m not complaining. I love Julia

94

u/quail_challenge122 9h ago

Honestly she's giving us everything we want.

11

u/cire1184 3h ago

That's Jason Bourne!

672

u/Brutalitops99 10h ago

Well its good but I'm not sure it'll get her into Juilliard..

20

u/Binford6100User 8h ago

Needs some more hip hop influence :D

64

u/sTevieD247 7h ago

Her dad still wants her to go to U-Dub. Be a Husky. Grrr.. rrrr...

5

u/Rosebud_apothocary 7h ago

😂😂😂

95

u/edencathleen86 10h ago

I saw the movie in theaters back in the day. Still one of my favorites.

Also, they all look smoking hot still. It's crazy.

u/fastballcdm2019 9h ago

Can’t believe he’s been gone 18 years!

42

u/wtchking 8h ago

Stop. Stop it right now. That can’t be, 18 years??? 😩

26

u/fastballcdm2019 7h ago

Yup - Died: January 22, 2008 (aged 28)

16

u/BlackShepperdd 6h ago

Oh God, dude was just 28 years old? I'm 32 and can't believe I'm older than joker

5

u/wtchking 4h ago

This is how I find out it’s been 18 years since I graduated high school btw… devastating on many levels

8

u/Sad_Visual_8727 7h ago

God damn....feels like just 5 years.

7

u/chronically_varelse 3h ago

I saw the other day that Robin Williams left us in 2014 and that also just seems like last year.

we miss them.

136

u/after_Andrew 10h ago

She has to win, right?

189

u/613Flyer 9h ago

Of course she will win she graduated from Juilliard

31

u/thebluediablo 9h ago

Sure, but how's her chicken impression?

5

u/Icy-Entertainer-1422 3h ago

has anyone in her family ever even seen a chicken??

-26

u/battles 9h ago

She went to Columbia, and has an English degree.

24

u/Mister_Schmee 9h ago

Whooshing sounds

5

u/roboticArrow 8h ago

Sensible chuckle

39

u/DelirousDoc 9h ago

One of her most famous roles after "10 Things I Hate About You" was in "Save the Last Dance". She played an aspiring ballet dancer trying to get into Juilliard. She initially fails the Juilliard audition, the plot happens, and then (spoiler) she auditions again and gets accepted at the end of the movie.

0

u/cire1184 3h ago

She didn't infuse enough urban spunk

-19

u/SomeCountryFriedBS 9h ago edited 9h ago

Yeah but Jenna Dewan is an actual trained dancer.

14

u/Colon_Oscopy_74 9h ago

that's not how it works on DWTS, it's about heart and growth, those carry more weight that technical merit only, but kudos to Jenna D, as she Is trying her best to score in that aspect as well. Having said that, Daddy big bucks Disney Duck will decide one the winner anyhow.

2

u/DelirousDoc 8h ago

Going to be real honest with you, the coaches are also likely told the range they can score contestants through out the season. Early in the season they aren't going to score them high, even if they did very well so they can promote that growth.

(Karate/martial arts tournaments often use the same idea. As a black belt I have had to be on hand as a potential judge for the kata sections. We are told that beginner belt scoring has to be within 6.0-7.9, Intermediate & advanced between 7.0-8.9, blackbelts 8.0-9.9. The idea in these tournaments is to not disrespect the higher levels with lower level students earning higher overall scores. Even when everyone can see beginner students are performing much less technically difficult kata. In DWTS case, it would be potentially insulting to score a newly trained dancer in high 9s as that suggests the routine was exceptional on even on technical level. Additionally because it is TV they want to create both tension in all scores being close enough that it is suspense to see who may be eligible to be voted off and create that idea of progress. Most general audience members aren't going to be able to tell the difference in technique growth after a certain point.)

As someone who danced for 15-years and taught. She’s absolutely phenomenal. Her lines and extensions, combined with flexibility, along with control and awareness, makes her an incredible dancer. But her emotions and freedom of movement make her beautiful and graceful to watch. I only wish that Joseph had joined in, he’s an accomplished dancer and has great form with back-tucks.

26

u/Any-Blood8949 10h ago

she’s up against an olympics figure skater so who knows? i think they’re neck and neck for the win honestly.

6

u/Miskalsace 6h ago

I love Julia Stiles, but God damn I am always so impressed by the gymnasts and female athletes. That throw where she was hanging off Pasha by her legs and spun and landed was out of this world.

7

u/SomeCountryFriedBS 9h ago edited 9h ago

Jenna Dewan has more dancing experience than Amber Glenn.

Edit: She literally does. She talked about it in the premiere.

5

u/Any-Blood8949 9h ago

hm i guess i hadn’t really noticed her dances enough to clock that. i only know her from the rookie anyways😖😖 i think i just love Amber Glenn lol so forgive the glazing ig😭

2

u/edencathleen86 8h ago

You never saw the original Step Up movie? You're missing out.

1

u/Any-Blood8949 8h ago

i have not seen any of the step up movies lol, guess i have to get on that😭

1

u/edencathleen86 6h ago

Only worth seeing the first one. I didn't bother with any of the sequels lol

1

u/imnotgayisellpropane 6h ago

Step up 2 was awesome

1

u/SomeCountryFriedBS 9h ago

She talked about being a dancer before acting in the premiere.

1

u/Any-Blood8949 8h ago

i skip over the talking/introduction segments if i being so for real with you, i just wanna see them dance and see the judges act like absolute wackjobs lol

1

u/SomeCountryFriedBS 8h ago

Mostly same, especially as it goes on.

10

u/ladeeedada 7h ago edited 7h ago

She's up against 2 professional dancers (non ballroom), and an Olympian ice skater. But the person that is most likely to win is two time gold medalist Paralympian, Ezra Frech. He's an above the knee amputee and by far one of if not the best dancer on the show this season, like truly. His dances are insanely good and not just for a person with a disability.

5

u/Raskalbot 9h ago

I hope so. I didn't expect to tear up to dancing to the stars clips this morning.

4

u/TaraxacumTheRich 8h ago

She's not favored to win at all. I think she stands a chance to make it to the finale, though.

336

u/Impossible_Squash_33 9h ago

She’s one of those actors who I always felt should have a bigger career.

116

u/Hubba-Ba-Loo 8h ago

I think she held that back because she wanted to be more choosy with her roles. And I’m not knocking that or judging her for that decision. She had three of the biggest “teen movies” for me. 10 things, Save the Last Dance, and “O”. And then she was in a lot of the Bourne series. I think a lot of actors like acting, and not being celebrities or the fame of it all, and she is one of those.

I could be completely wrong this is just what I’ve read into different interviews with her over the years.

17

u/ModestMouse1312 8h ago

She was in Dexter too!!

6

u/imnotgayisellpropane 6h ago

Totally forgot she was Lumen!

0

u/ModestMouse1312 6h ago

I loved their dynamic together

Where he was often afraid of having a destructive effect on those around him (righfully so)

He actually did heal someone

0

u/Tigger_Tinkerbell 4h ago

She was a really interesting character, I really enjoyed this story lines.

50

u/Epic_Elite 8h ago

I can't blame any woman in entertainment for doing a Kristen Bell routine, where they dip their toes in and do a decent sized roll. Then step out and come back a full grown woman who can advocate for themselves and pick up awesome rolls and absolutely kill them.

13

u/Narrow_Grapefruit_23 6h ago

When did K Bell ever dip out???? Lol.

19

u/Atlientt 5h ago

lol I feel like Kristen bell is the polar opposite of stiles. So overexposed. And on a personal level too, she and Dax are such oversharers and he’s just awful. And I used to love her.

1

u/Epic_Elite 5h ago

Yeah, so apparently she was in a whole other show beside Veronica Mars that I've only learned about just this moment. I also didnt realize VM went for over a decade.

I guess I really havent followed her career closely enough.

All I know is The Woman In The House was amazing. One of the few shows my wife watched that I also found entertaining.

9

u/cire1184 3h ago

You should watch The Good Place.

2

u/Pretend-Sundae-2371 3h ago

Biggest thing she is known for is being Anna in the Frozen movies.

5

u/Impossible_Squash_33 8h ago

Now that you mention it, I think I remember reading something similar. I just always liked her.

35

u/antisocial_empath 8h ago

Sh probably didn’t want to perform sexual favors for the gatekeeping elitists in Hollywood. I think this about lots of talented female celebs who sorted of faded into obscurity.

31

u/figuringthingsout__ 7h ago

She's focused a lot of her life off camera. She's worked with Amnesty International, and Habitat for Humanity. In 2016, she got married and now has three children.

1

u/Planktonic8647 8h ago

She moved into directing and prioritized family life over acting. Though her movie got like a 30% on RT so…no wonder DWTS.

52

u/Historical-Solid8665 10h ago

My Millenial heart jumps with joy! So beautiful!

55

u/tgillet1 8h ago

I love the way the choreographer worked in Heath’s dance moves from the movie, a mix of graceful, silly, and heartfelt. Bit of a shame how staged and rushed the tribute right at the end felt, but that’s showbiz and at least the cast had a nice opportunity to reunite and allow us all a chance to remember Heath and the movie along with them. It got me a little teary eyed.

The What Went Wrong podcast had a great episode on 10 Things recently which gives some nice insights into the process and how the cast got along and what they put into the movie.

7

u/PastlifeloversApt304 4h ago

It got me a little teary eyed too. I saw Ten Things in theaters and Julia’s character Kat was such an influence to me as a teenager lol

185

u/casual_creator 10h ago

Haven’t seen Stiles in years. Doesn’t look like she aged a day. She took that spinning move like a champ - I think I would have fallen on my ass after that lol

51

u/nikatnight 9h ago

She was pretty prominent in dance films back in the day. She’s no slouch.

27

u/SomeCountryFriedBS 9h ago

She admitted to doing very little dancing in those. Doubles.

13

u/Lycaenini 7h ago

She doesn't look older to us because we have aged along with her. 😉

7

u/HappyHavoc20 10h ago

She was in an omen movie in the last decade, that’s the last time I remember her being in a film

6

u/Captain_Futile 8h ago

The Omen was in 2006.

1

u/HappyHavoc20 8h ago

lol. I think actually I was thinking of the latest orphan movie, but I definitely didn’t think it was in 06 yikes

12

u/karma_the_sequel 10h ago

C’mon, now. She looks great, but she has definitely aged.

2

u/cire1184 3h ago

I saw her in that movie she was a reporter doing a story on strippers in New York robbing dudes.

34

u/laurenbettybacall 9h ago

I notice how the dress resembles her prom dress in the original movie! Nice touch.

2

u/PastlifeloversApt304 4h ago

I agree! Even her hair with the long curls.

68

u/AthenianWrangler 9h ago

Best adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew.

12

u/SnarlyDolphin 8h ago

I think this was probably the best of all the historic-literature adaptations into 90s teen movies. And there were a LOT.

2

u/Omatzus 9h ago

Have there been others of note?

8

u/EcstaticTill9444 9h ago

Still technically the best though

3

u/yagirlsophie 5h ago

Well if you count stage productions there sure have been

0

u/[deleted] 3h ago

[deleted]

1

u/Omatzus 3h ago

Adaptations of Shrew, not in general lmao

1

u/truzen1 3h ago

Ah, missed that. I thought they were asking about general adaptations, as you pointed out.

23

u/that_name_is_taken 9h ago

I love that story of how she cried while she was delivering those iconic lines when the script didn’t call for it but the producers kept that in the film because it was so heartfelt.

35

u/JennHatesYou 8h ago

I know the joke forever has been that Julia cannot dance but you’d have a hard time convincing me that’s not just a joke someone told years ago that stuck based on the way she moves in this. I’m sure some pro dancers will come and explain to me exactly why that’s not true but until then I thought she looked graceful and at times effortless and I thought it was beautiful. Not just the dancing but the whole piece. A touching tribute for sure.

20

u/EvenMoreSpiders 7h ago

The joke of her not being able to dance comes from the movie Save the Last Dance where her dancing is highlighted and awful though the movie pretends like it's the best thing ever. I loved that movie as a kid ngl. It did not age well lol

3

u/browngreeneyedgirl 7h ago

Ssssh we are showing our age 🤭

That movie and the dance were absolutely horrible but amazing in our time haha

1

u/itsathrowawayduhhhhh 6h ago

The late fees I accumulated renting that movie omgggggg lol

2

u/browngreeneyedgirl 5h ago

🤭🤭 I had it with Te things I hate about you

2

u/JennHatesYou 4h ago

Haha I know which is why after watching how well she did in this, if you told me she had always been a good dancer but was acting that she was bad (even though it’s portrayed as good in the movie) I’d believe you.

What I’m saying is that she’s made a vast improvement and actually does have dancing ability contrary to the meme.

1

u/imnotgayisellpropane 6h ago

That was my favorite movie growing up but yeah that dance was awful.

56

u/HonestWeekend89 10h ago

well i cried 😭

16

u/craftylady1031 10h ago

same here

6

u/fingertips-sadness 9h ago

I also shed a tear.

5

u/Green-Z 8h ago

Who’s cutting onions in here?

21

u/planetalletron 10h ago

My elder millennial heart loves this but my elder millennial cynicism asks: isn't Andrew Keegan still running some kinda weird sex cult?

1

u/PastlifeloversApt304 4h ago

Had no idea he ever did. Kind of crazy.

16

u/Colon_Oscopy_74 9h ago

I never heard of that Heath Ledger movie, then again, Broke Back Mountain and Monster's Ball were my first of his viewings. gonna rent this one tonight, thanks Julia & well done dear, & you were absolutely great in Dexter.

33

u/Extension-Rabbit3654 8h ago

Super fun, rent a Knights Tale too while youre at it

25

u/strtrech 8h ago

"You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting."

12

u/Extension-Rabbit3654 8h ago

"Its called a Laaance, helloooooo"

8

u/IndividualFun1892 8h ago

I quote that every time I dump some one to this day 🤣

0

u/tslojr 7h ago

Terrible adaptation. Great movie, though.

2

u/Aeon1508 4h ago

I don't think it really matters what the source material is. banger ass movie

1

u/tslojr 4h ago

Damn straight it is.

I was just making a terrible 14th century literature joke.

17

u/Aeon1508 4h ago edited 2h ago

10 things I hate about You is pretty classic non-raunchy teen romance movie.

it's solid

if you want real classic Heath ledger it's you got to watch A Knight's tale

3

u/DJettster237 3h ago

Was there dancing in the movie?

7

u/rvanasty 3h ago

Yes. Heath sings and dances across the high school bleachers to Cant Take My Eyes Off You during her soccer practice.

4

u/Runs_With_Scissors3 3h ago

Yeah Heath sings!!! I loved “10 Things I Hate About You.” It’s such a sweet coming-of-age movie without too much raunchy stuff.

3

u/Cosmic_Quasar 2h ago

You're the second person to say this... but it was too raunchy for me to watch according to my parents lol. And, tbf, it does have a few things.

Like the teacher (principal?) writing erotica. Julia flashes a teacher (not that you see it). A guy drew a penis on another guy's face.

I love the movie, but it definitely has a few moments lol.

3

u/Aeon1508 2h ago

it's no American pie / EuroTrip / Van Wilder.

It's pg-13

0

u/Cosmic_Quasar 2h ago

Haha no, definitely not. Those are definitely on the more extreme end. I just wouldn't have described it as "not raunchy" lol. "Relatively tame", maybe.

1

u/Aeon1508 2h ago

idk I think what you're describing is risque, like barely. maybe edgey is the right word. Racy?

Raunchy is just in a whole other level

1

u/Azidamadjida 1h ago

Ever seen Not Another Teen Movie? The part where Chris Evans sings on the bleachers is a parody of the scene from this movie

•

u/ravnhjarta 1m ago

Love both those movies, need to rewatch them again.

9

u/Omatzus 9h ago

It's a classic!

5

u/Paindepiceaubeurre 8h ago

oooh you're in for a treat, I'd highly recommend it.

4

u/crs7117 8h ago

You must

1

u/Effective-Island8395 5h ago

Available for free on Pluto.

1

u/Azidamadjida 1h ago

It’s really good solely from the cast - it was another of the 90s “let’s update a Shakespeare play with Gen X actors” but also ended up casting relatively unknowns who would go on to big careers so it’s pretty nostalgic

0

u/butterfingernails 1h ago

She's not reading this...

8

u/LooseEndsMkMyAssItch 8h ago

That was an awesome tribute. Whoever thought of this is a genius and has a heart of gold

6

u/leat22 8h ago

DWTS is really milking her fame. It’s fun and I approve

5

u/lemonylol 9h ago

Wow she aged great

2

u/Poneke365 9h ago

She’s such a graceful dancer and I love her hair. Beautiful touch at the end when she honored Heath Ledger and the cast were reunited 🥹

4

u/OrangeClyde 9h ago

I wonder if Kelly Rowland watched this? 10 Things I Hate About You is her fave movie of all time.

4

u/ModestMouse1312 8h ago

I love 10 things i hate about you and how she danced to hypnothize!!

5

u/dannylip 2h ago

Why is this in "mademesmile"?

Mademyeyeswell🥹🥺

2

u/KaeSaid 1h ago

Right? I sobbed last night watching this.

2

u/dannylip 44m ago

I don't watch this show, but my cousins and I were obsessed with 10 Things.. this had us all upset in the group chat

3

u/Minnymoon13 8h ago

She still looks so good

3

u/ElmarSuperstar131 7h ago

This made my childhood sing 🥹 I was so moved by what she said about Heath in her rehearsal package. I lost one of my best friends when we were 22 and I still want to pick up the phone to reach out 😢.

3

u/auntiefuh25 7h ago

Right in the feels!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭

5

u/asyrmou 9h ago

Best thing i've seen on Reddit today (and maybe of all time)

4

u/iabyajyiv 9h ago

Okay, I cried.

4

u/aspophilia 7h ago

I’m not crying, you’re crying.

0

u/PastlifeloversApt304 4h ago

Yup, as soon as I heard her reading the poem, I was done for.

7

u/Fabulous_Log844 10h ago

She's so interesting to me. I did not really find her that attractive when I was younger, but now as we are getting older, she gets prettier and prettier. Very elegant.

4

u/rintzscar 6h ago

In reality, you get smarter and smarter.

2

u/NoLobster7957 9h ago

I had never really seen her in anything before the remake of The Omen and I thought she was so terrific and so lovely in that movie. She seems like a good egg.

1

u/Aeon1508 4h ago

her face has always been a little squashed and a funny way she's like almost really pretty and then just a little bit imperfect.

but that was kind of the appeal of her as a actress. it helps her feel like a real person

1

u/TheBoBiZzLe 3h ago

It’s the RBF.

I married an RBF. Most fascinating, scary, worrying, mysterious, all consuming thing.

2

u/starsNjars 9h ago

This was cool

2

u/becominggrouchy 9h ago

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

2

u/L1mb0 7h ago

They were smiling, I was crying.

2

u/Equivalent_Address_2 6h ago

She’s been good so far and I was really excited to see her this season. Lumen was my favorite Dexter character. It just felt really manipulative to bring out the entire cast.

2

u/DeliciousMovie3608 5h ago

This is so touching. I was shocked about his passing. The tribute is wonderful

2

u/Tigger_Tinkerbell 4h ago

Im glad to see her back on screen and I hope that this produces more work going forward. Shes beautiful and genuinely hasn't aged!

5

u/fazzah 9h ago

it was the first time I saw american "Dancing" and i'm surprised how short the routine was. Our local version makes the people dance for much longer

9

u/T0m_F00l3ry 9h ago

You mean the format for DWTS? This short one isn’t normal either. It’s just because of the tribute aspect and going to commercial.

2

u/GeneralEffective 8h ago

I'm not sure if you mean that the US version was the original one, but in case you did- it actually isn't. It's the American version of the British show Strictly Come Dancing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strictly_Come_Dancing

3

u/T0m_F00l3ry 8h ago

Nope. I was just responding to the comment about this particular dance being very short.

1

u/GeneralEffective 8h ago

Ah, apologies for "well actually-ing" you!

•

u/KaeSaid 18m ago

It's still kind of early in the season and there are a lot of contestants. They get longer toward the end.

5

u/Aeon1508 4h ago

kind of a cheap way to get votes in a competition show. lol

yes I get it I'm the hater.

2

u/Mahaloth 2h ago

I, uh, kind of thought that as well. However, I also would hope she means well.

•

u/Aeon1508 16m ago

oh I know she does.

1

u/Mottled_Paws 35m ago

Haha. I thought it was awesome just now. But I also thought she could have absolutely bombed this and there's no way she's getting voted off.

•

u/KaeSaid 17m ago

It's a dedication night. Lots of stars do tributes to dead family, friends and co-stars.

3

u/FatFaceFaster 6h ago

I’ve only seen this and her save the last dance clip, but isn’t it a bit unfair that she gets to use other celebrities, movies she was in and the death of heath ledger in her dances?

Do other contestants have this opportunity?

3

u/naywhip 4h ago

Yes they all have the chance to do it. Tatyana did hers to uncle Phil from fresh prince and Alfonzo was in her dance. ♥️

3

u/bongo1138 9h ago

Is that Olivia Colman? Is she in that movie and I'm forgetting?

12

u/Competitive-Tea-6141 9h ago

Beside Julia? Larisa Oleynik

8

u/ALIENANAL 9h ago

My childhood crush, Alex Mac.

1

u/Colon_Oscopy_74 9h ago

IMHO, after viewing the show since the beginning of time, the bottom scoring leaderboard dances were all the best last night. those 8's should have been 11's. talk about segregation of the pack.

1

u/parkerkudrow 9h ago

😭😭😭😭😭

1

u/OrangeClyde 9h ago

Fuck, Andrew Keegan is still SO fine

1

u/Kind-Shallot3603 8h ago

Andrew Keegan huh....where's he been lol

1

u/Psychological_Mix594 8h ago

Very nice. Thanks for sharing

1

u/WorldTravelBucket 8h ago

No David Krumholtz joining them?

1

u/ProjectOrpheus 7h ago

Heath is my idol. The eay coming across this made me feel is...therew no words

1

u/itsathrowawayduhhhhh 6h ago

When someone told me she would probably do the bleachers performance and I said “ohhhh Janie’s got a gun?! Annnnnnd that confirmed how much of a millennial I am hahaha

1

u/DJN2020 6h ago

She's always been so beautiful to me. So unique.

1

u/tataniarosa 4h ago

That was lovely. Sigh I miss him. 😔

1

u/LexSlings 4h ago

Why don’t they have shoes on 😩

1

u/RamadanSteve01 4h ago

I was expecting a joker twist lol

1

u/WorldNo7931 2h ago

I will be watching this over and over til I die. Its the perfect combination of excitement followed by tears.

1

u/raymondo1981 1h ago

Thats pretty damn awesome.

1

u/Fluffy_Fondant1975 1h ago

The reunion at the end is kind of weird.

1

u/Gelby4 52m ago

It would've been cuter if they played Heath's version he sung in the movie

1

u/shaft_of_lite 45m ago

That was beautiful. Can we get the table dance now?

1

u/thecrius 31m ago

Wow, leveraging a beloved dead guy for compassion points.

Good for her, 10 things I hate about you is still a great movie.

However, I lost most respect for Joseph Gordon Levitt when it was revealed he is part of that Peter Thiel group.

Levitt is not “part of that Peter Thiel group”. It was a conference he attended along with many others that Thiel was originally part of putting together over a decade ago. It was only “secret” in that it was invite only which is not uncommon. Levitt is legit and has put his efforts into a number of real progressive causes.

He also left the gathering saying he’s worried about the people creating the AI. lol doesn’t really sound like he’s in the “in-crowd” with the lizard people.
