Why? Is it impossible for two people of opposite genders to have a platonic relationship with each other unless one is gay?

When i broke up with my ex, I called my mate about it and the first thing he said was;
"Why don't you try to get back with her"

u/Meet_Foot 13h ago
Extremely unhelpful haha
16
u/ManoliTee 5h ago
Some friends give the worst advice, for real. I never met my dad (never want to, he's an actual POS), and one of my mates was like "Yeah but you only get one life, you never know" 🙄 bro wtf?
4
u/Meet_Foot 4h ago
Man, that advice is borderline meaningless! Like, I only get one life, so why waste it trying to connect with a pos? If the advice can justify anything, it justifies nothing.
3
u/ManoliTee 4h ago
Thank you for saying that! That advice made me feel crazy sometimes, like "am I in the wrong?". Some people have some dumbass takes

Your perceived social image will seem so unimportant when you're older but the connection you didn't chase may haunt you forever. I let a lot of good slip away because I was worried how it would look.

Lol the comments about male-female friendships aside. Redditors don't have friends jokes lol
Recording yourself/taking pictures of yourself crying is gotta one of the top 10 narcissistic things.
Idk am I alone in this?
106
u/Tacos4Texans 15h ago
Depending. After my Mom died earlier this year, I got tired of being a crying little bitch (still am) and decided to take a picture of my ugly cry face and actually got a good chuckle out of it. But posting said picture is where I feel the narcissistic behavior starts.
43
u/Crispy_p_bacon 14h ago
Ahh I should've clarified, I mean exclusively about the posting part/sending to others. Doing whatever for personal reasons is none of anyone's business. I'm sorry to hear about your mom. If that's what gets you through then that's what gets you through. It's on your phone for you. Personal stuff. You're not a little bitch! That's an extremely difficult thing to go though and I hope you're going to be okay <3
18
u/Tacos4Texans 13h ago
I appreciate it fam. I'm just living to make her proud. That's all I can do.
14
u/Crispy_p_bacon 13h ago
Rip to your moms, I bet she was already proud of you.
Keep making her proud!
13
u/Eastern-Peach-3428 10h ago edited 9h ago
Not a "little bitch"! I'm 60 so I have far fewer days ahead of me with my mom than are behind me. I know without a shadow of a doubt her death will crush me. Anyone calls me a little bitch when I'm grieving is going to get the not so nice aspect of my personality in return.
You grieve my friend and tell anyone judging you for it to fuck off ... even that spiteful voice inside your own head calling you a "little bitch".
Much love from me to you. Take care of yourself.

u/_CharDeeMacDennis__ 6h ago
Man, my mom died in 2012. I was 28 and I still cry about it.
Not daily, but it’s something that will always make me sad as fuck.
19
u/Psychic_Hobo 14h ago
I feel like in this case it's not too bad, as it's basically used as a build up to the story about how her friend cheered her up in a really weird way.
25
u/burtsbeetreethree 14h ago
It makes me a bit uncomfy as well but maybe that's just societal conditioning? Like why tf are we allowed to share pics of ourselves smiling and having happy times but crying is not okay?
7
8
u/NotTukTukPirate 14h ago
Equally, I think people need to stop downloading random Instagram stories/posts from other people and sharing them as their own.
Our society has turned into this pathetic, karma/attention-seeking, validation-obsessed culture where originality has taken a back seat to the desperate need for likes, approval, and the illusion of having something interesting to say. It's become less about genuine self-expression and more about manufacturing a personality for an audience.
5
u/Braysl-March 10h ago
I read someone explain once that they record moments like themselves crying or being happy etc for their instagram not necessarily because they think their thoughts and feelings need to be seen by others, but more because it gives them catharsis from sharing those emotions. Like writing in a diary, except that diary is public. They probably also get that dopamine hit when others acknowledge their posts, which isn't necessarily narcissistic seeing as humans crave social interaction.
Idk, I don't put images of myself going through tough times online. But I can see how people might use it as a way of self expression.
2
u/_CharDeeMacDennis__ 6h ago
Yeah, I hate crying in front of so I will never understand wanting to cry in front of a camera for sympathy/clout.
It’s fucking weird, man.

I love taking photos of myself crying. Sadness is such a beautiful emotion. I am very aware of myself when I am sad and crying, amd sometimes look in the mirror when I get a tissue or something and think, "oh seasons of life, huh?"
We discount how beautiful sadness can be because of how beautiful joy is. Especially grief. Grief is so beautifully heartbreaking.
I'm really tired and having a hard time describing it, but I take photos of myself crying but because I think sadness is beautiful.
But as far as posting them; I don't judge. I'd rather someone post a photo of them crying than to not reach out to anyone at all. Whatever gives people community, it's ok. 🫂

u/0202_tihssitidder 9h ago
I really love the experience of just doing fun/weird/random stuff.
When my step kids were little we'd face paint...just random days. It really bonded them. They got blue faces and went to their friend's house next door. They came back and everyone got blue faces. They went walking around the neighborhood and we ended up with about a dozen kids with blue faces (one mom got angry...meh).
They would do animal faces and clowns and whatever. They'd go out to dinner like that. Even as high schoolers they did it. I got a pic last month from them with kabuki face (both are in their 20s now and live across the country).

some of the guys in these comments have never experienced the warmth of female friendship and it shows
28
u/SpiderSixer 9h ago
All of my friends are girls. Granted, I'm in a female-dominated career, so the pool of guys isn't exactly huge, but I've also never cared about that. So many of my best friends have been girls. They're just... people. It's actually insane to me that there are people out there that think guy-girl friendships can't/shouldn't exist. Like wtf, you're depriving yourself of love and affection willingly?

u/kris_deep 15h ago
Fr, when dealing with some tough times, like interview rejections and job breakups, the response of my male friends was that I should have tried harder and gone to the gym. My female friends gave me comforting words and support, and told me that I'm worthy and will find great things

honestly yeah some guys never had a friend just sit with them while they fall apart and it really shows
29
u/Kracus 13h ago edited 13h ago
Yeah, because that's how you lose friends. We don't get that luxury, we're expected to tough it out and be stoic and if we aren't then we're seen as failures. Not just by male friends but by females as well.
Just as an example, I work in a very stressful environment and I don't feel like I've been given a proper chance to elevate my career. This isn't like, unique to my employer or anything but rather throughout my career, which I'm sure by many I'm seen as successful but for me, I feel like I've moved mountains only to accomplish mediocrity. One of my co-workers is a girl I went to highschool with and we chat once in a while and one time, I mentioned to her a slightly existential opinion about the reasons we do what we do and the pointlessness of it all given the current political and social atmosphere.
She reported me to my boss. I had to talk to my boss about if I was happy at my work because there were concerns I wasn't. Nothing disciplinary but still. That's what I expect if I open up to someone. Not kind words and understanding.
edit: Thanks for the downvotes, really proving my point.
8
u/cracktackle 13h ago
That's rough man, I know it can get really tough at times. But I believe in you, and that good things are coming your way!
12
u/dreamception 9h ago
I want to ask - when was the last time you tried to be the change you want to see in the world? and also a follow-up question, "because that's how you lose friends." How did we arrive at the conclusion that those were friends worth keeping around, as opposed to, let me find people who don't do that?
I've had many experiences of people reacting badly to when I opened up. You know what I learned? This person does not have the emotional capacity to handle that sort of conversation, so therefore I'm not going to open up to that person anymore.
4
u/Ok_Photograph6398 12h ago
That blows. I gave you an upvote. Did your relationship change after she reported you?
5
u/Kracus 12h ago
Thanks and yeah we don't casually talk anymore which is what I'm saying generally happens to men if they open up which is why most men won't.

"We dont get that luxury"
Find better friends and stop interacting with conservative men.
11
u/Kracus 12h ago
I honestly don't think it's a trait that's unique to a political affiliation.
3
u/Threedawg 12h ago
It 100% is.
Leftist men, mostly, are not trying to out-masculine each other, are not afraid of talk about emotions, and not terrified of femininity. There are of course exceptions.
Conservative men are universally uncomfortable with these things, its a core tenet of conservatives. There are no exceptions here. You cannot have emotional intelligence and be conservative, they are polar opposites.
9
u/DingleDangleTangle 10h ago edited 10h ago
There is something ironic about judging people’s emotional intelligence in the same comment that you group everyone on earth that disagrees with you politically into having the exact same emotional state and views without exception.
Is “If they have my political views they have good emotions, other political views are bad emotions” what you consider “emotional intelligence”?
1
u/Threedawg 10h ago
Emotional state and emotional intelligence are not the same thing. There is no such thing as good emotions or wrong emotions.
This is exactly what I am talking about. Thank you for demonstrating the conservative example for everyone.

u/SaintJewiub 14h ago
I agree, but you see for many this is kind of an example of why many men dont keep them. Growing up I was friends with a lot of girls and generally speaking there was a lot more of me being there for them then the other way around. I can count on one hand the number of similar times that ladies went out of thier way to be there for me in a similar matter. My male friends have done me massive solids in comparison and it feels like a far more even playing field, at least in my own anecdotal experience.
Maybe its just kind of the type of people I connected with though. There is only one friend as a woman still in my life from that time outside of my wife, and the only times I tend to have her actually show up for something I invite her too usually ends in her wanting help with something.
3
u/ylogssoylent 9h ago
Yeah I think it depends much more on the individual and group than the gender of the person. My male friends have seem bewildered during my worst times for the most part, where my female friends were easy to open up to
8
u/Ripplerfish 13h ago

Literally will never understand demonizing men for wanting to form a relationship with someone they're good friends with.
It feels like you guys think hooking up with a random girl at a bar shows more character than wanting to date someone you've gotten to know and like on a personality level
11
u/soryu0 12h ago
You and other people are treating this as a black and white situation. Yes it’s ok to romantically pursue your friend. but you all are acting like it’s only possible that this guy is in love with the girl and there’s no chance that they’re just good friends. i hate when some men act like there’s no chance a man and woman are just friends and they don’t secretly want to fuck.

It's not about the development of friendship into a romantic relationship, but the pursuing of that friendship as merely a means to get into bed with someone, and then refusing to interact with that person when they're not interested in you sexually.

Yeah, I feel that. It's absolutely wild that some people simply can't seem to comprehend that a man can be friends with a woman without wanting to get into her pants.
And that's also the reason why it becomes more and more difficult for genuine men who actually aren't assholes because women are becoming more and more cautious.
I'd love to say that they shouldn't but seeing the world we live in at the moment... it definitely is a very understandable reaction.

Still surprised at how many people can't fathom opposite sex friendships that stay completely platonic.
6
u/absurd-lil-dinkus 9h ago
To put it in perspective, many guys haven’t been in relationships where their girlfriend would be okay with them playing this role—being body painted green by a recently heartbroken female friend.
Many boys growing up do not see their fathers being willing to do this for female friends while moms not there. They see this as a single guy activity. So to be surprised at comments being suspicious of this is to be ignorant of how boys are brought up and interacted with in this world.
Sure he could be a gay best friend, but that’s not relevant to the “platonic relationship” discussion as these relationships are platonic definitionally (gay guy/girl).
