Question What happens to Lineage if Google makes Android completely closed source like Apple?

Things have changed a lot since I first installed LOS probably a decade or so ago(back then I think it was Cynogen mod).

And even before Google took over Android, android still worked pretty well.

After that a lot of changes has happened in LOS and I am not that technical but I see a google folder in META-INF/com inside the LOS package for sweet/RN10Pro which might not have anything to do with google, not my point.

What I am trying to determine is with google's insistance on making Android just like iOS, what happens to project like LOS?

Question Would it be a bad idea to try installing LineageOS without experience installing custom ROMs?

Yesterday I was watching some videos about custom ROMs and LineageOS caught my attention.

I have some experience formatting computers and have been using Linux daily for over a year, and I'm curious to try an open-source ROM on my phone, but I believe that installing a custom ROM on a phone isn't the same as installing a Linux system on a PC.

Most importantly, I think it's worth noting that I currently only have access to one phone, which means that permanently damaging it would be a big problem.

Do you think it's worth trying to see if the custom ROM works for me?

Question Budget device for banking apps

I need a new device as the older one got stolen. Unfortunately I don't have the budget to get even a decent phone as the prices of phones are skyrocketing right now.

My only requirement is that I need to use some banking apps which require google play services and it worked well in the pixel that I had before which was using some other os.

Does LineageOS has an option of setting up a container or something in which a user can allow play services for certain apps?

If yes then can u recommend a phone around $200 in which its possible to install LineageOS?

Question The best camera app?

I flashed LineageOS 23.2 yesterday on my Moto G10 Power and It's such an upgrade, now I finally have something to look forward to in life. (Thank you devs!). I was wondering what y'all would consider to be the best camera app as an alternative to the default and I also wanted to ask if I'll be able to take ultrawides, macros etc from the dedicated sensor if I install GCam. Not that it matters just curious.

Question Budget $200 range phones, with factory unlocked bootloader, available online today, that support latest Lineage OS?

I've had a Motorola moto one 5G ace, codename "kiev" for four years now.
It's been running Lineage OS for MicroG 19.1, and it was time for an update.
Well this phone will not boot any current Lineage 23.2 (Android 16) builds. Boot loops.
I've flashed recovery, run copy-partitions, factory reset, installed from microSD. Nope x3.

I loved how easily the OEM unlocked the bootloader before, so months ago I ordered my phone's sidegrade, a moto g 5G 2024, codename "fogo", with the intention of installing the latest Lineage OS version. But today Motorola says, "sorry, this new phone model, is not supported by our unlock process". Well I just threw away about $160 on a "unlocked" phone that the OEM won't unlock. I'm sure I could have had Lineage running on it today, with that bootloader unlock. Motorola won't even tell me, which models are eligible, for their bootloader unlocks.

What's a $200 range phone, with an unlocked bootloader, or bulletproof unlock process?
Searching for exactly matching model numbers online, usually results, in sparse 'in stock' results.
Has someone bought a budget phone recently, and had a smooth Lineage OS install process?
I'd prefer a Nothing Phone 2, but cannot justify or afford to spend $700 on a phone.

Question Would LineageOS save my pixel?

Just like the title says, would flashing LineageOS save my pixel from Google's "lock down" that's going to happen soon?

I'm aware that it'll be (maybe) a one time 24hr wait period until you can sideload whatever you want but, given that big tech companies don't always keep to their promises or to their word, I'd rather just avoid it all together by flashing a ROM I'm interested in. I tried looking in different communities to see if someone may have asked a similar question to mine and possibly gotten an answer but, unfortunately I haven't seen anything that answers mine or similar questions (well there were answers but the way it was put didn't seem like it was informative or helpful).

I've done some research into this ROM specifically and I like it a lot. I've practice on my pixel 8 and I love how much more optimized it is. I flashed it I believe two or three days before October 1st and as I was flashing it I was also charging it and since then I literally haven't charged it at all, like that's how amazing this OS is!

So, to end my post, I hope my main concern and hopeful solution of flashing LineageOS on my pixel 9 pro will save it from Google's "lock down" and if you'd like you can leave your favourite alternative app or OS in the comments.

Thank you in advance šŸ˜ŽāœŒšŸ¾

Question Risks of Lineage-ing Primary Phone?

Recently got a new phone (Sony Xperia 5 IV) and due to the upcoming Google sideloading block, I hope to switch it to Lineage. However, I see a lot of people recommending against doing it on your primary phone. What exactly are the possible risks?

I'm tech-savvy enough to follow instructions and troubleshoot. I don't use Google Pay, I don't need my banking app, and my old phone has been on Android 9 for years so I don't care if stuff like face unlock or any of the other doohickeys work. Is there anything I'm not thinking of that could pose an issue?

(P.S. I read an article suggesting that Google might be able to enforce the sideload block via third-party gapps packages. I haven't fully committed to degoogling because of youtube and gmail. Is it worth the trouble of finding alternatives to avoid gapps entirely for this reason, or is this unlikely enough that risking it should be fine? I'd like to totally degoogle one day for privacy reasons, but for now I'm too busy to dedicate myself to it.)

Thank you for your time!

Question Is there an active community developing Android ROMs?

Is the development of Android ROMs kinda dead, or did I not look well enough?

I got to this sub trying to find CyanogenMod. I used CyanogenMod in a lot of my previous devices, and was trying to get back on it for fun. However, besides this sub and LineageOS website, I didn't find anything on current developments. I remember when CyanogenMod was around, the XDA forum was booming with mods and people developing for current phones, and I couldn't find that.

Edit: thank you all!

Question Why doesn’t LineageOS make its own phone?

I really like LineageOS. It’s lightweight, fast, and feels way less bloated than most stock Android ROMs.

So I was wondering, why doesn’t the LineageOS team make their own phone?

I feel like a phone officially built around LineageOS would be pretty interesting. Would anyone else buy one?

Question How do I build LineageOS for an unsupported/unknown Android device?

I’m pretty new to custom ROM development and just want to try building LineageOS for my device.

Is there an easy way to do it, especially if there’s no existing device tree or official LineageOS support?

I have the stock ROM and can get the device specs/kernel info if needed.

Would appreciate any simple guide or advice for a beginner. Thanks!

Question Banking Apps

I'm planing to migrate to LineageOS because One UI is upsetting me lately, one thing holding me back is because I see a lot of people saying there can be problems with Banks.

Can I migrate and still use my bank apps normally? (I'm from Brazil, if this information is relevant)

Question Is LineageOS going to continue to support APKs from unverified developers when Google starts forcing verification?

This has me worried: https://www.androidauthority.com/android-developer-verification-requirements-3590911/

I use FOSS apps on my phone all the time, and I'm really hoping that LineageOS will give me a way to bypass these restrictions when Google starts implementing them, because I have a feeling they are NOT going to back down.

EDIT: I'm aware LineageOS doesn't ship with Gapps by default. I'd like to have the option of using it as well as my FOSS apps, instead of having to pick and choose between one or the other.

Question Which is the best phone brand for custom roms?

I will be getting a new phone soon, and I’m trying to decide which brand to buy. Which brands have a good community support and custom ROMs?Ā

Additionally, I’m considering getting a budget phone that I can modify to resemble a Pixel 1 in order to gain more storage. Which brand would be best for this purpose?

Question Given that LineageOS has a desktop mode when connected to PC, can we say that the bulk of work to be done to make LineageOS run on a PC form factor is already done? A LineageOS PC version running natively on PCs with ARM chipsets would be great.

With the launch of Googlebook PCs, Android running on PCs could become mainstream(but Googlebook's AndroidOS modified-for-PC is not yet open source and cannot be run on any hardware other than the laptops shown during launch day)

There are "made and optimized for desktop" Android apps shown at launch and Google said a full fledged Linux subsystem for Android is also present in the Googlebook PCs.

I would like to run Android natively on PCs but projects like BlissOS seem to be inactive. The latest Bliss OS release is 3-4 years behind.

Windows PCs with ARM chipsets are becoming mainstream because of better battery life and running AOSP Android on those ARM PCs would be far more power efficient than Windows, not to mention no Microsoft bloatware.

Open source Android can become the everything OS running on mobile, desktop, tablets, smart TVs, smartwatches etc.

Question How is lineageOS for someone who is degoogling and someone who enjoys Linux level customizing

So in the nearish future (a year or so) I am going to be ditching my iPhone and swapping to something FOSS and more privacy focused. And seeing how lineageOS at its core is just a truly free version of android it’s peaked my interest.

I’ve been reading into different alternatives for me and currently grapheneOS seems to be the best option for what I want and /e/OS is a close second. But grapheneOS and /e/OS (to a lesser extent) has one major downside: hardware availability. It’s currently locked to only the pixel (for decent enough reasons but still) and /e/OS to a lesser extent. I don’t want to feel like that is my only option when looking at potential replacement for my phone.

That’s when I stumbled into lineage. And seemingly this android distro can do what I want it to do which is remove google services and use FOSS alternatives primarily while not limiting me to only a few devices. Now I’m not a total privacy, security nut who NEEDS grapheneOS BUT I do like to have control over what data is sent out and where ā€œhints why grapheneOS sandboxing features resonate with meā€. So with lineageOS can i achieve ā€œdata sovereigntyā€ to the extent of a degoogled average Linux user?

Also I see a little blurb on the website about individuality. How far could I push it? Currently I’m running omarchy (already heavily riced) with some custom apps i built and custom themes I’ve made as well as customizing how my windows appear and move using hyprland on my laptop. So how far could i push customization within lineage? Is it similar level to something like arch Linux where I can open up my machine and make it do whatever I tell it to do ā€œbreaking it or not in the processā€ or is it a bit more restrictive to that of like Apple where you can change the look a lot but nothing major behavior wise under the hood?

Just fishing for info, experience with lineage, and resources that may help me in making a decision.

Question Coming from GrapheneOS, wondering about Privacy concerns before shifting.

I have been using GrapheneOS for last 2 years and I am pretty satisfied the OS, but now my phone is having hardware issues thus it needs to be replaced and honestly, I don't want another Google Phone from the perspective of Hardware Specs vs Price and the reliability that is deserving of such price.

Now, I am looking to move towards LineageOS but my current research is limiting my understanding of Privacy provided by the default installation. I mean I know I wont get the sandbox experience here but I read that LineageOS can be made more secure based on the method of Installation like using MicroG instead of G-Apps.

Can someone explain to me what privacy risk is there with LineageOS (without being a biased fanboy) and what methods are there to mitigate said issues (if any). And what precautions should I take when installing the OS?

Resources for the same, if can be provided, that would be great

Question Does a Switch running Android run like a phone?

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with mobile app penetration testing and could give me some insight on if using an old switch I have laying around with android on it would work just as well as a physical phone would. I don't have a phone that works for testing currently so I would need to buy a Google pixel 6a, but I would like to see if this is an option first. From what I can find, it should mostly work, but if anyone has actually tried and could share the experience before I either mod my switch or buy a phone, that would be appreciated.
