[SUB NEWS] New Banned Domain: Vercel.app

1.1k Upvotes

Much to the relief of many people, starting today, we have introduced a blanket ban on Vercel subdomain hosted sites.

Few, if any, sites hosted on Vercel subdomains have ever been allowed to remain on the sub anyway.

(This ban is in addition to the Netlify ban by Reddit itself.)

If you can't be bothered to pay for a proper domain and/or hosting we're no longer willing to sift through the slop to see if it could potentially stand on merit alone (which it invariably doesn't).

Vercel users feel free to proceed to whinge, which we will promptly proceed to ignore.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

[SUB NEWS] Generic and Repetitive Site Submissions.

Hello all,

Many of you have noticed the rise in increasingly generic and repetitive sites - for instance, collections of tools, PDF editors, resume builders, calculators, generators, and timers - that are very easy to create using AI. We understand your frustration; they're ours, too.

In an effort to combat this, we have adjusted our AutoModerator rules to catch more of these before they hit your feed. We will continue to monitor the situation and adjust the filters accordingly if they prove to be too aggressive (or not aggressive enough).

Please note: This does not mean all submissions of the types mentioned above will be banned. As always, every submission held by the AutoModerator will be reviewed by a human who may still approve a post based on its merit.

Additionally, as a quick FYI: We are also considering changes to our 'AI-Generated Content' rule. The exact wording and management of this rule are yet to be finalized, but we will share more information with you in the near future.

An interactive globe that follows 450 years of hookah history through 14 cities, with a source for every fact

It starts in 16th-century Persia and follows the hookah to Mughal India, Ottoman Istanbul (where smoking could get you executed in 1633), Cairo, Beirut, Berlin and more. Besides the globe there's a small museum and 8 chapters to read. Every fact links to its source, so corrections are welcome!

A 3D map of 31,942 human-named colors, from "Crème de la Crème" to "Pick Your Poison"

Hi, I made this!

I started a list of Color Names ten years ago as an open list project.

Mostly collected and invented by myself but also from people all over the world. It's grown to almost 32,000 names, and it's free under the MIT license (npm package, JSON/CSV & a free API).

The site places every color in 3D space (using different color models like RGB, OKLab, OKLCH or HSL), so you can fly through it, search a name or paste any hex to see what it's called. Each color has its own page with its neighbors, complementary colors and public-domain artworks from museums that use it.

Happy to answer questions!

I built an interactive book to explore pi and search its first billion digits — feedback welcome

Thumbnail piexplorer.org

I’ve been working on PiExplorer, a small personal project built around a simple idea: exploring π should feel more like opening an interactive book than using a conventional reference website.

You can read about π, explore its decimal digits, and search for a sequence of digits in a dataset containing one billion decimal digits.

The project is still evolving, and I’d really appreciate some honest feedback.

A few questions I’m particularly interested in:

  • Does the interactive-book format make the experience more engaging, or does it get in the way?
  • Is the digit-search feature useful and easy to understand?
  • What would make you want to explore the site further?

Here it is: https://www.piexplorer.org/

I built it as an independent project and would genuinely appreciate constructive criticism, including anything confusing or unnecessary.

I built Maparium — explore OpenStreetMap features across the entire globe

Thumbnail

I'd like to share a personal project I've been building.

Maparium lets you display thousands of OpenStreetMap features globally, from wind turbines, power plants and castles to volcanoes, spaceports, railway networks and data centres. You can switch between predefined layers and explore patterns that are difficult to spot when looking at individual locations.

I'm using MapLibre GL JS, a Protomaps basemap and custom MBTiles generated from OpenStreetMap data. A big focus has been making the experience fast and lightweight, even when displaying features on a global scale.

I'm building this mainly for fun and curiosity.

It's still a work in progress, but I'd love to hear what you think!

What other OpenStreetMap features would you like to explore this way?

Every licensed dog in New York City, mapped by neighborhood. Search any breed or name to see where in the city it's most common.

Thumbnail
everydog.nyc
58 Upvotes

I built this from New York City's Open Data portal's dog licenses data file, which lists each dog's name, breed, and birth year, and the owner's ZIP code. The 2026 file has 96,459 dogs, and the site places them across 197 neighborhoods (Neighborhood Tabulation Areas).

Things to try:

  • Type a breed or a name like "Labradoodle" or "Luna" into the search box, and the map shows where it is most common.
  • Put "vs" between up to four breeds, names, or boroughs to compare them, as in "Luna vs Bella" or "Brooklyn vs Queens."
  • Click a neighborhood to see its top breeds and names, along with the ZIP codes its numbers come from.
  • Zoom in far enough and the dogs ride the subway on the real routes. Click a train to follow it!
  • Add your own dog. You get a card comparing them with the city, a subway ride, and a turn in the Central Park or Prospect Park game, and the dog stays in your browser.

A license records only a ZIP code, so every neighborhood figure is an estimate. The code and the method are open source, accessible here: https://github.com/firatciftci/every-dog-in-new-york

I built an interactive 3D map of Prague's entire metro system

I made Metroskop, an interactive 3D visualization of Prague's metro system.

You can explore the entire network, see how deep the stations actually are, follow the tunnels underground, and discover some lesser-known parts of the system.

It's free, works in your browser, and there's nothing to install.

Thought some of you might enjoy exploring it.

Have a great day!

I was interested in the music artists I liked, and wanted to create a much more comprehensive way to view the connections artists may have with each other. It's just a fun project, let me know what you think!

Data comes from Youtube Music public playlists for connections and Deezer for artist info (since spotify/apple doesnt share anything)

Leaning into "wherever you get your podcasts" with a player that runs entirely in your browser

Thumbnail
wherever.audio
11 Upvotes

I got really tired of podcast platforms that build walled gardens between listeners and the open internet. Podcasting works because it's built on open formats and protocols. It's why the phrase "wherever you get your podcasts" works (see this great post: https://www.anildash.com/2024/02/05/wherever-you-get-podcasts/).

wherever.audio embraces this philosophy, deeply:

  • Runs on any device with a modern browser.
  • Runs entirely client-side, including RSS parsing. Nobody decides what you can see or watches what you listen to.
  • Add any RSS URL to https://wherever.audio/show?rssUrl=
  • Installs to your device as a PWA, so you can run it offline or on private networks.
  • No proprietary feed or episode identifiers, just RSS, creator-provided episode GUIDs, and Podcasting 2.0 feed GUIDs.
  • Clips are just start/end times added to the URL. The recipient's player uses range requests to stream the clip straight from the podcaster's server. If you download before clipping, we can even provide word hints to help the recipient find the right offset.
  • QR code sharing; everything is a URL.
  • Strong support for import/export, including OPML. Your data lives on your device and we help you move it wherever you want.

Caveats: a small helper server handles podcast search and CORS for publishers that don't set headers for their feeds. It's one of very few places where we have infra. Requests carry no personal data and logs are deleted after 60 days. Also, the app is not open source.

Given all that, I'm very interested in feedback, either on the player itself or, if you don't listen to podcasts or are happy with your current player, on ways we could more fully embrace the open web. What else would you want to see?

Hey, after rewatching all 25 Bond films I wanted to see every filming location in one place, so I built this. It's a free fan project. I'd love corrections and missing locations, there's a "field report" form for that.

visualize the electro-magnetic field

Thumbnail rotemtsafrir.github.io

I’ve been building this antenna/EM simulator as a side project:

https://rotemtsafrir.github.io/dipole_sim/

The idea is to make it easy to place antennas, change their parameters, and immediately see how the fields and interference patterns change.

Right now you can use:

  • center-fed dipoles
  • Hertzian dipoles
  • small loop antennas
  • linear antenna arrays

The arrays are probably my favorite part so far. You can adjust spacing, phase difference, element count, orientation, etc., and see beam steering / broadside / end-fire behavior directly.

You can switch between electric field, magnetic field, and energy-flow visualizations, and pan/zoom around the simulation.

The antenna currents are prescribed, so things like mutual coupling, impedance, and passive conductors are not solved yet. I’m trying to keep it fast enough to be genuinely interactive.

I’d love to hear what people think—especially if you notice anything physically questionable or have ideas for features that would make it more useful.
