This pos..no seatbelt, cell Phone in hand, dog in lap, not looking at the road and crashes into someone 😤 too common now
Putting other peoples lives at risk, just reckless..

u/Oraclethe8ball 7d ago
Driving and holding a dog like this is crazy. Even if you are the best driver on the road, shit happens. A perfectly well behaved dog may still panic and run into traffic after an accident too
Kennels or harnesses that clip into the seatbelts are way safer for them

u/TroubleFlat2233 6d ago edited 1d ago
working in collision teaches you that anything not strapped down or tied down including babies or dogs and especially full grown humans turn into projectiles. Fatalities can occur in accidents as slow as 30 mph. Whenever I see a dog with it's head out the window or anyone not wearing a seatbelt or a child not strapped into a booster seat, I've seen first responders picking up dismembbered body parts of people and animals off the road and those images never leave your mind.
Also anyone not buckled up in the vehicle becomes a danger to everyone else buckled up in the car. People don't recognize the risks they take by not buckling up.
2
u/Sbuxshlee 3d ago
Ive has to explain this to both my parents and in laws....my car doesnt move unless everyone is buckled because your stupid ass isnt taking me out with you
3
u/Freudianslipangle 6d ago
The biggest trouble with dogs on laps is the airbag deploying in an accident.
They are in the direct path between an explosive and the person.

Not all people deserve dogs.
That person, that person does not deserve a dog.

There is a dog in the lap of the lady who rear ended the cam car.
1
u/Mad_Ronin_Grrrr Community Regular 6d ago
How can you tell?
6
u/2sAreTheDevil 6d ago
You can see it sitting in her lap, between her and the door, just before impact. Little brown feller, looks like a dachshund.
3
u/Mad_Ronin_Grrrr Community Regular 6d ago
I see it now.
4
u/2sAreTheDevil 6d ago
Yeah. People mistreating dogs frustrates me a lot. My girl rides in the back seat all the time, but she's still secured with a leash and harness for this exact reason.
Plus, despite being ninety pounds, she insists she's a lap dog, and we can't have that while driving.
2
u/Man-of-goof 6d ago
Where do you see it? I still only see the airbag and the persons hair.
2
u/Mad_Ronin_Grrrr Community Regular 6d ago
There's just a little bit of brown by her lap right next to the door and then you can see it during impact on the bottom door side of the steering wheel. I wish I could find some sort of article about this. It kind of looks like a dog but could also be a purse. Idk

I was the passenger in a car that got rear ended this year. The driver was also distracted by the dog in his car. I wonder if this happens often.
3

2
u/Timely-Helicopter244 7d ago
It does happen often. Animals are unknown quantities that will do things you don't expect no matter how well trained. They should never be in the front seat and restricted to some degree no matter what for basic safety of everyone in the vehicle.
1
u/Equivalent-Muscle446 4d ago
Yeah i have a seatbelt clip i tie on the back of the headrest in the backseat. Even if my well behaved and trained dog WANTED to act up, he wouldn’t be able to go very far, jump out the window, climb into the front etc.. which means i can focus on driving and also know he is safe too.
1
u/noxvita83 7d ago
I keep my dog in the front seat. The front passenger seat. With a harness that is buckled in with the seatbelt. She has enough room to move and adjust herself on the seat and to stick her nose out the window.
2
u/CokeBottleSpeakerPen 5d ago
My little creature is super old and just sits there in the passenger seat, but when she was a baby, she was in the back seat because you couldn't be sure what she'd do at any given moment.

This is irritating. I bought a dog net and doggie seatbelts to keep my dogs in place. Got door protectors so they can sniff out the window without scratches. My stepdad was a state trooper and told me the deceased pets and kids always crushed him when he responded to accidents. Made it a point to protect both when I'm driving.

You are never supposed to be so close, or going so fast, as to be unable to stop if the car in front of you comes to a sudden stop for whatever reason. If you rear end someone, you are 100% at fault. That is the way the law works in these situations.

We’ll never know as it’s now shown. But people break for many reasons from stop signs, to children, to animals, to road debris.
2
u/tribalien93 5d ago
Your seeing the vehicle finish stopping from the rear view. Maybe that is making it seem like an abrupt stop. The camera didn't look like it was jerking around like it would for a break check or a panic stop. Subarus can't stop on a dime.

1
u/FuckOutTheWhey 1d ago
The vehicle that did the rear ending stopped even more abruptly yet the white truck behind them had no problem stopping in time.
Maybe paying attention while driving works after all

1
1
u/Purple_Repeat6977 4d ago
You can mention it but it's not relevant. You should be driving with a safe enough gap to respond to literally any amount of braking, especially if there's an emergency
1
u/WeeklyBanEvasion 3d ago
The speed is not accurate. It was showing 24 mph for 3 seconds while they sat stopped. This was likely a normal stop
1
u/R82009 3d ago
Normal stop for what is the question? looks like they’re on a rural 1 lane highway.
1
u/WeeklyBanEvasion 3d ago
It doesn't matter what they stopped for, if you couldn't stop in time you were following too close
1
u/R82009 3d ago
It does matter as it was a contributing factor to how the accident happened. Doing things on the road that others don’t expect lead to accidents. It’s not their fault but some people want to avoid incidents like this by avoiding legal but higher risk maneuvers all together
3
u/ragingasian15 2d ago
If the vehicle stopped for an animal on the road, would you be questioning the stop?
If the vehicle stopped because there is traffic ahead, would you be questioning the stop?
If the vehicle stopped because the driver had a sudden medical emergency, would you be questioning the stop?
The onus is ALMOST ALWAYS on the following car. This is one of those cases, it's not an exception. The driver was distracted, and had ages to slam on the brakes, even if the stop ahead was unwarranted. The following driver also wasn't tailing, so it's not even one of those brake check situations.
Just stop using your phone and stop being distracted. Pay attention on the road.
1
u/R82009 2d ago
Of course the onus is on the following car, but that is not going to make the driver who got rear ended feel any better or magically fix their car. You folks on here got to see past The who is at fault blame game and realize being right doesn’t mean a whole lot right now for the driver that was hit. If it were me I would have rather hit a small animal and pull over instead of stopping immediately and getting rear ended.
2
u/ramboozer 2d ago
The contributing factor are...the lady had no seatbelt on. was texting while driving. had a dog in her lap.
It literally makes 0 difference ever why somebody stopped.
You dont know if somebody infront of that person is trying to pull in their driveway. if its a red light...a stop sign...you have no idea and none of it matters.
The driver wasn't paying attention and truthfully...after the footage shouldn't be allowed to get behind a wheel again.People forget all to often...Driving is a Privilege
You are driving a weapon
if you cant handle it safetly...
you shouldnt be allowed to do it.1
u/R82009 2d ago
There is a reason why defensive driving is taught. If you don’t understand that just because something is permissible under the law, it still may not be the best thing to do, there is no hope for you.
2
u/ragingasian15 2d ago
I think the guy you replied to agrees with you, my guy. Do you even bother to read, or do you just want to start arguments? And yes, I'm happy to start this argument even though I agree with you because you need to chill if people who agree with you are causing you to crash out.
1
u/R82009 2d ago
Not interested in arguing unless it’s going to be logic based. My point is coming to a full stop in the middle of a one lane highway may be legal but you are probably going to regret it. Not being at fault does not make you immune to the consequences of dealing with an accident, if you have ever made an insurance claim you know you are not going to be made 100% whole. That’s not even including the time and effort it takes to deal with the accident and repairs.

I'm with you on this one. This is how a lot of insurance scams work. It just seems weird to slam on the brakes in the middle of a highway. I hope the driver and the dog are okay.
1
u/GarGonDie 2d ago
You have to leave enough distance to be able to brake in an emergency, that’s all there is to it; if you don’t, it’s your fault.
1
u/BungleBums 2d ago
Doesn't look at all like they made a sudden stop, more like the lady didn't realize traffic was slowing ahead of them and continued at speed. Relative velocities and such,
1
u/FlawlessWings8 5d ago
Surprised nobody else mentioned this. The car even rolls forward after the collision so it’s not like there was sudden traffic in front of them. This looks like a brake check.
2
u/RestDismal7805 5d ago edited 5d ago
No one mentioned it because it is not irrelevant.
1
u/FlawlessWings8 5d ago
How is it irrelevant? It’s reckless driving. Brake checking is illegal in several states for a reason.
3
u/RestDismal7805 5d ago
You have rear ended someone before, haven't you?
2
u/FlawlessWings8 5d ago
Nah. I’ve T-boned a neighbor that left their stop sign while my street had no stop, though. Even though my car was going faster and ran into hers, she was found at fault for pulling out in front of me.
Why are you suddenly not against irrelevant topics?
1
u/RestDismal7805 5d ago
She was 100% at fault.
When you rear end someone they don't have to provide reason why they stopped. The "brake checking" you are talking about is not the same as suddenly coming to a stop and being rear ended.
Hope this helps champ.
1
u/FlawlessWings8 5d ago
“When you rear end someone they don’t have to provide reason why they stopped”
According to who? The dash cam shows they went from 35 mph to a sudden stop and there was no white line, crosswalk, or seemingly anything in front of the dash cam car. You think if you suddenly stop in the middle of a highway and someone hits you that the investigators aren’t gonna ask why you stopped in the middle of the highway?
1
u/tribalien93 5d ago
The speed shown isn't accurate. No way a Subaru stops that fast from 35. It shows the car moving 24 mph after its stopped for a second.
→ More replies (1)1
u/RestDismal7805 5d ago
When I got rear ended by someone going similar speed no one asked me why I stopped.
Reddit is full of people that think they can tailgate and it's on the person in front of them to prevent a collision. That makes no sense.
"Brake checking" isn't as common as you want to believe. This woman was driving phone in hand no seatbelt dog on lap and rear ended the person in front. It's her fault. No one cares why the vehicle stopped. It's not illegal to stop on a road.
2
u/Acceptable656 4d ago
Exactly. Somebody stops because they thought they saw someone trying to cross. Maybe that was a mistaken impression. Maybe it was a flash of light that confused them. It's not wrong to slow or stop if they think "what the hell is that" rather than get into a possible accident.
It's the job of the person behind them to always assume "that car ahead of me could stop at any time" and leave enough room. You don't know what could happen. The person driving the car ahead of you could have a heart attack and keel over in the seat.
1
u/Acceptable656 4d ago
You could say you thought you saw someone trying to cross the street. Doesn't matter if that was just a mistaken impression. You have the right to stop whenever you feel it necessary and nobody can prove you wrong.
Which is why you better stay well back of anyone so you can stop in time.
1
u/Acceptable656 4d ago
That's not the same as rear ending someone because you didn't leave enough space.
1
u/R82009 2d ago
I’m guessing that just because you weren’t at fault the situation wasn’t magically over. You had to deal with a lot of inconveniences that you won’t be compensated for. It’s crazy that people on here think that the discussion just ends at who is at fault. Being right doesn’t mean not exclude you from consequences, it just makes them a bit more manageable.

" Brake checking is illegal in several states for a reason."
Tell me you're a bad driver without telling me you're a bad driver. The black car was pretty far back, absolutely no reason to think they were brake checking. Also unless you have undeniable proof, brake checking is very hard to prove legally. Yet you're here like yep they were probably brake checking! Also that black car had plenty of time to stop because they weren't tailgating, just weren't paying attention clearly.
1
1
u/ragingasian15 2d ago
There's plenty of distance, so it was not a brake check. There doesn't need to be a valid reason for someone who is distracted and at that distance to not slam on their brakes and stop.

There is a way to have a cell phone conversation in a car. It's called speakerphone. There are even things that you can put into your car where you can attach your cellphone to so it works with your car's stereo. Hell, you don't even have to plug anything anywhere these days, just have your phone with you and bluetooth on and it will automagically connect once you have paired them just one single time!
Most modern (read: built after 2015) cars have that as a standard feature... dunno about US made cars, but the rest of the world HAS arrived in THIS century by now!
There is really NO excuse anymore to hold a cellphone in your hand and be distracted while driving!
