Hey!
There's a linguistic phenomenon called linking. Linking happens when a sound connects two words in pronunciation.
“in Haiti”, is not “at Haiti”.

“An” can also be used in a verbal construction like my family.

Example:
Let's pray.
Let's pray together.

Here, “Let's” is the contracted form of “Let’s”.
So, we shouldn't confuse linking with contraction.

Per the title, I am looking to hire a Haitian Creole telephone interpreter who can be available from Tuesday, September 29th from 1-3 PM to assist with a consultation with an immigration lawyer. I am assisting a woman with hiring a lawyer to prepare her application for defensive asylum and have everything lined up for the consultation except for translation. The law office cannot give us an exact time for the consultation but has indicated the conference call will take place in the "early afternoon." I am willing to pay for the interpreter to be available from 1-3 PM (EST) to ensure we have someone available whenever they call. The persons involved (including the lawyer) are physically located in Ohio but I believe the interpreter could be anywhere so long as they are able to call in. If you are not personally able to assist, I would be grateful if you could pass along information for services or apps which provide on-demand interpreting services in Haitian Creole for an individual (rather than a business or corporation, as this is what most of the services I have seen advertised are geared towards) as this need may arise again in the future. I’ve been learning Kreyòl for a little while and I recently moved to a city with a lot more Haitian people so I’m excited to be able get more practice with the language.

I recently noticed that in conversation, when telling people where I’m from (Los Angeles, CA) I default to the Spanish pronunciation of the city. I’m a Spanish speaker and to my understanding many Haitians also speak Spanish so I haven’t encountered anyone who was confused by me doing this, but I was wondering if there is a proper way to pronounce the city name in Kreyòl.

I’d also like to know the proper pronunciations of other American cities like New York, Atlanta, Boston, etc. but they certainly come up in conversation much less than LA since that’s where I’m from lol

Hey everyone! Here are a few essential Haitian Creole expressions, proverbs, and everyday phrases with their literal and actual English meanings. Hope this helps anyone learning Kreyòl!

1. Sak pase? / N ap boule!

Literal: What's happening? / We're burning!

Meaning: "What's up?" / "We're doing great / getting by!"

2. Men anpil, chay pa lou.

Literal: Many hands make the load light.

Meaning: Teamwork makes the dream work.

3. Pwoblèm pa gen klakson.

Literal: Trouble doesn't honk its horn.

Meaning: Misfortune comes unannounced / without warning.

4. Degaje pa peche.

Literal: Making do is not a sin.

Meaning: Resourcefulness / Finding a way to make things work with what you have.

5. Mwens pale, plis travay.

Literal: Less talk, more work.

Meaning: Actions speak louder than words.

I’m a beginner learner of Haitian Creole. I believe I’m around.. 8 weeks in or so? I’m not sure. But I truly love the language and I have a desire to master it and be able to speak it fluently.

I love the language. My native tongue is Spanish, and I speak some French, Portuguese, and Catalan, so I have been able to identify many cognates and correlations between these languages that are so cool. I want to learn more and continue improving both my pronunciation and communication skills. I was wondering if anyone in this forum would be willing to offer me some guidance and help throughout this endeavor.

I am eager to learn and to make mistakes in the process. I have been dedicating about 1 hour every day to studying it online, but nothing is better than speaking to someone who already speaks it, is learning, or is native.
