Sweatshirt caught fire while welding

IT WAS 100% COTTON.

I was dumb and leaned over a hot weld. Went up in flames. I was around 7 months pregnant too. Day of and the last photo is day 6. Surprisingly didn’t scar.

This why we wear FR. So it burns off you and not into you when it catches.

things like this is exactly why you shouldn't wear polyester when there is a risk of fire

Years and years ago (I wasn’t even born yet and I’m almost 30 now), a friend of my mom was playing with her siblings close to a bonfire. One of the boys was wearing a polyester t-shirt. Long story short, the shirt caught on fire, bcuz it was “plastic” the shirt glued on his skin. The boy didn’t survive.

Now most of our clothing is just different types of plastic. You try and find a cotton shirt at a Ross lately? You gotta hunt for it.

I can barely find 100% cotton T shirts anymore. They use to print it on the label, now there are no labels just print directly on the shirt so you have to look on the packaging. (edit correction)

Why do you need 100 shirts?

2

u/maybeharmfulorfatal 21d ago

Correction 100% cotton

u/JakBos23 26d ago

Yeah, I was learning to weld and my boss and the welder didn't mention my shirt could catch fire. No injuries though so it was pretty funny.

You do know that there is better ways to shave you pits, fire is not the answer.

u/cuntybunty73 28d ago

Thank god he didn't try it elsewhere 😭

I don't think you should be welding your armpits

9

u/Ram2145 28d ago

My armpits has a gap, so gotta fill it.

3

u/Battlejesus 27d ago

That's what JB weld is for

15

u/yewkaka 28d ago

We had a guy at work get burns to about 40 percent of his body after his oily polyester jumper went up when a spark caught a bin on fire. Even the guy who put him out had 3rd degree burns to his hands. I’ll only weld in drill cotton clothing now

100% cotton, wool, or leather only for me.

15

u/bubbav22 28d ago

What material was the sweatshirt? We were not allowed to wear certain shirts in school like polyester because it's more flammable.

2

u/kazeespada 22d ago

Cotton is actually more flammable but polyester melts into a sticky goo when lit.

And synthetic cotton blends have the best of both worlds. The lower ignition point of cotton and the sweet sticky situation of polyester.

Wear your leathers and proper helmets guys, a safe workplace is a fun workplace.

I usually wear a welding jacket. So no burns. You should try one, you wont regret it.

11

u/tweakingforjesus 25d ago

You were inhaling welding fumes at seven months pregnant?

2

u/ThisIsntOkayokay 24d ago

Bills don't too... Sad now

5

u/Surraucus 26d ago

Impressive it got all 3 of your pits, hope they're doing better

5

u/xxMercilessxx 25d ago

When you're dumb, you gotta be tough

10

u/lostsharpie 28d ago

Safety third.

4

u/VergilArcanis 27d ago

Oww. And yeah, this is why two hoodies of mine in particular are pure cotton. I even went blacksmithing in the one and it was great. Saves me from close calls constantly.

Beyond that leather is friend.

u/XortTheGoblin 28d ago

Hope your recovery is quick and easy.

Least it was from welding and not dragon fire like these two

6

u/the__party__man 28d ago

That’s one way to take care of stubborn arm pit hair

7

u/InevitableOk5017 28d ago

Pretty crazy how people don’t wear proper Ppe when doing things with equipment.

3

u/Caliberman53 25d ago

Ow, that looks very sore. I hope you heal quickly.

2

u/yes_maybe_no__ 28d ago

At least it's in a comfortable place..... Hope you heal up quick.

2

u/amorphousfreak 28d ago

Why weren't you wearing FR longsleeves?

2

u/1bi001 27d ago

Lesson 1 - don't wear synthetics while welding, lesson 2 through forever - don't wear synthetics while welding. The end.

2

u/LordGRant97 26d ago

I've caught myself on fire several times while welding. But I've never actually gotten burned from it. I'm slightly impressed

2

u/Finna-bust-the-nut 26d ago

Welcome to the job. You’ll catch on fire more than you think.

1

u/cupcaketea5 22d ago

I am glad I am not pursuing welding, because what?!

2

u/Stage06 26d ago

Fire blankets are your friend or leathers

2

u/Roneyrow 25d ago

Now that's a fire pit.....

2

u/Happy_Conference6675 24d ago

I hope it healsquickly, speedy recovery.

2

u/poncho5202 23d ago

4

u/GruncleShaxx 28d ago

This is why they make welding coats

2

u/jackandsally060609 28d ago

Right in the perfect area for some chafing on the blisters too. I'm so sorry.

Dude is going to have his arms in the hair, and shake them like he just don’t care.

1

u/PositiveRest6677 28d ago

Third picture is worse than death

1

u/Accomplished-Cook981 28d ago

My oily pants caught fire once managed to pull them off before I got burnt to baldy

1

u/TimoBRL 28d ago

There’s a lot of loose skin. You should rub that off / remove that. It’s an infection risk.

1

u/Alimovic 28d ago

Bad place

1

u/nartchie 28d ago

Thought it was both arms for a sec.

Speedy recovery

1

u/menthol_patient 28d ago

Oh damn. I can't think of many worse places to get burnt.

1

u/Blacketron 28d ago

Good work

1

u/bearboyjd 28d ago

Next time I recommend taking the sweatshirt off before catching fire. Hope this helps.

1

u/Punisher1971 25d ago

Beeing pregnant then, Dude is a woman! Taking cloths off in the workplace, might be „irritating“ the workplace.

1

u/roundguy 28d ago

I have a scar on my forearm. My glove wasn't covering my nylon lined flannel shirt. Sparks went down my sleeve, and i sensed something not normal was happening. Lifted my helmet and saw my sleeve was on fire. I slapped at it to put it out, which caused the melted nylon to stick to me. That hurt 100x more than the flames. Several mistakes were made

1

u/Phoxey 28d ago

Don't wear plastic (polyester) to your welding job in the future, god speed.

1

u/westcal98 28d ago

Sorry to hear about your shirt, but why were you grilling your arm pit?

1

u/Darthbane8488 28d ago

Fucking owe

1

u/RemarkableChest4638 28d ago

1

u/str8frmthacr8 26d ago

You ought not do that.

1

u/Brewtech3 23d ago

Not unexpected with this one.

1

u/Colegunter 23d ago

Just did this to my belly button, was underneath a car welding overhead and it dropped a bit of slag on my shirt and I had no idea cuz I was still welding hood down, eventually it breaks through my shirt and hits my skin and when I look down my whole lower half of my shirt was on fire and I was just now feeling the heat of it lmao

u/Shoushiko 23d ago

Silicone bandages or patches can help to minimize scarring while the burns heals

1

u/rrrrrrrrrrrrrroger 23d ago

I always wondered, does a pregnancy and the extra hormones help accelerate healing?

1

u/deliciduous 22d ago

Did the cooked pit have a different aroma? I wonder

1

u/mk4-tdi 17d ago

Good lord that looks painful. You poor thing you!

1

u/UnableAbbreviations2 8d ago

Prayers and best wishes. Hope you are healing well.

1

u/Noff-Crazyeyes 28d ago

Sigh. Unzips.

u/relentless_dick 28d ago

Instructions unclear...

0

u/CreativeSame 20d ago

Had a burn similar to that, I'd say it's one of the most painful things you can feel without it looking too bad 😭
