Dear Diary ✍️🏻 Got mansplained that "Last Christmas" isn't a Christmas song
Earlier today I was having lunch with a guy and he asks me, "What's your favorite Christmas song?"
I answer, "Oh, definitely Last Christmas by Wham!"
He looks me dead in the eye and goes, "That’s not a Christmas song."
I was completely confused. It's literally one of the most iconic holiday tracks in existence. When I asked him what on earth he meant, he doubled down: "It’s just a heartbreak song. Just because it happened on Christmas doesn't make it a Christmas song. If it happened on any other day of the year, it’d just be a break up song."
Ngl I got a little defensive and started debating him because the fuck you mean my favorite Christmas song doesn’t count? "Okay, so by your logic, All I Want for Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey isn't a Christmas song either. If you take away the holiday date, it's just a song about wanting to see her partner really bad."
He immediately got defensive: "No! The song mentions mistletoe, sleighs, and Santa!"
"Right," I replied. "And Last Christmas mentions wrapping up presents and saving it for someone special on Christmas. They literally both use holiday tropes."
After a little back and forth we both eventually gave up. So I asked him the obvious follow-up: "So, what's your favorite Christmas song then?"
Without a hint of irony, he looks at me and says, "Baby, It's Cold Outside."
Are you fucking kidding me?! By his own logic, that song doesn't mention Christmas, Santa, presents, or the holiday season AT ALL! It’s literally just song about it being cold outside! It could be cold on November 23rd or January 15th!
The audacity to lecture me on what counts as a holiday song, only to name a song that fails his own stupid Christmas song rules, is insane.
Am I crazy, or is this some kind of mind fuck Christmas gatekeeping?

There are some comments explaining that in the context of the time it was written it isn't actually rapey and moreso actually playing hard to get as an actual courting ritual. But even that just means "I'm going to act like I don't want this so that hanging out with you for a night doesn't ruin my reputation" so it's still kinda sleezy since Dean Martin has nothing to lose.
I tend not to trust anything that is 1 degree of separation from the Rat Pack. The main exception is Satanism and Christopher Lee since Sammy Davis Jr. was a Satanist and he was also good friends with Christopher Lee.

If he had said "Baby, it's cold outside" with the ironic tone, the joke might have been clear and if the mood was right, the troll might be hilarious in retrospect.
The lack of irony proves he was doing this not to be a fun troll, like that guy in the 1950s that sang the "Trololol" song. He was doing it because he enjoyed watching OP suffer through the conversation, like a cave troll that enjoys breathing into someone's face and watching them flinch at the stench of their rotted breath.

I had a guy tell me unironically that "Baby, it's cold outside" was his favourite Christmas song, after he spent our whole date negging me and basically telling me that all the things I enjoyed (music preferences, hobbies, my job etc.) were inconsequential and stupid. I looked him up and down and said "yeah, you definitely look like the kind of guy to pick the song about a man who doesn't understand consent," before slapping $20 on the table to pay for my drink and leaving.
He actually texted me while I was in the Uber asking me if I was coming back. No thanks buddy, if I wanted to be gaslit for Christmas, I would visit my mother and attempt to talk about my childhood traumas.

If you interpret "Baby it's cold outside" to be a consensual song, then that hinges on the idea that the woman's body language is screaming "I want to stay here with you, and what we're doing now I'd a fun little role play where I pretend to play hard to get". Times have changed, things were really dumb back then.
That guy obviously couldn't read body language from you if he asked if you were coming back (what the actual fuck???), so if he found himself in the lyrics, it's because he interprets it in the non consensual, "all women love being coerced" kind of way.
I hope the drink was worth the $20 cause he sure wasn't

I'd actually take this as truth but it's performed by Dean Martin. Not exactly a champion of feminism. He was a member of The Rat Pack. A bunch of pervs and racists that got away with it because they publicly were sometimes nice to Sammy Davis Jr.
But Frank was a monster to him off the stage and away from the press.
Someone favoring this song is as much a yellow flag for me as someone favoring any divorced dad rock song that's about underage girls. I'm not going to give those a pass just because "the culture was different back then". Recognizing how messed up a lot of our culture was back then is how we grow culturally.

not to be all “achtually 🤓” about this song, but it’s really important (imo) to view it through the time it was written in.
it was originally written by Broadway legend Frank Loesser to sing at parties with his wife, Lynn Garland. it was an inside joke thing between husband and wife, and was NOT date-rapey in the original context. they would sing it at their own parties or friend’s parties & often swapped male & female lines for comedic effect. mainly, it can be viewed as an equivalent to “closing time” by third eye blind - aka the gtfo song they played at the end of the evening.
Lynn actually felt super betrayed when Frank sold it to be a song in the feature film Neptune’s Daughter in the late 40s because she felt like it was “their song.”
in that movie, it’s made v clear that the main lady & main dude like each other a lot and are consenting adults, but it was filmed at a time when reputation mattered a lot & neighbors were much nosier. the lyrics are just them both making excuses to stay, essentially rationalizing her spending the night because it’s “cold outside”

If you actually look into the context and history, the song is about 2 people who want to spend a night together during a time when it wasn't socially acceptable, so they have to come up with excuses that are politely declined until finally it reaches "well I guess I'll just have to spend the night cause of the weather", turning it to acceptable. Out of context it comes off incredibly creepy. For it's time, it's how society worked and was considered to be a conversation of romance. It's not that different than my husband and I in bed in the mornings saying how it's cold out of the bed and that's why we we shouldn't go to work.

Long ago in the era of watching TV free via waves in the air, there were several movies that played every year during Christmas break. Sound of Music was one, Wizard of Oz was another. For 80’s kids they are just linked to Christmas even though they are not at all Christmas movies.

- "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" - Mentions pumpkin pie, so it's a Thanksgiving song.

My dad loves the Beatles and Spanish is his first language. He actually learned English mostly through their music. However, he hates Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime". I asked why. He said it is a weird song about a party and seems cheesy and off-brand. I had him listen to it again, paying attention to the lyrics. He had somehow missed that it was a Christmas song this whole time! I like it, but that's because it sounds pagan to me.
