Vent Sesh - No Advice Wanted Over $1k groceries in the trash
Dinner is a "spicy burrito" that wasn't even a little bit spicy but bomb ass bean dip.
We're a family of five. My three kids are 4, 6, and 10. About a month ago my husband asked my oldest to put something in our "big freezer" in the garage. I made it very clear to everyone that he is not to do that. It's old and tricky to close sometimes.
Today we investigated the garage because it smelled rotten. The freezer door wasn't closed. One of the drawers got knocked and prevented it from closing. All of the meat is bad. It was 5 garbage bags no less than 20lbs each full of food. Guestimating at least $1k worth of food just... in the trash.
Then my husband tells me that my oldest got something out of the freezer the other day. He said it was before school and so early and he just wasn't thinking. He let him get whatever it was, he knocked the drawer loose, and didn't close the door. He's been apologizing because he knows I just fucking said that oldest isn't supposed to do that. For this exact reason.
I know he's human, I know he's sorry, I know... but all of our food. We only keep ice cream and ready to make stuff in the house freezer. All of our meat, meal plans, surplus soups and sauces... everything. I just want to cry.

Ugh that sucks so much!
My parents had a latch on their freezer because of something like this. We knew that the latch always had to be shut.

It is very clear that all the responders saying "That's too bad, but you can restock and turn this into a learning experience" have CLEARLY never been poor. $1000 in groceries when everything is 3 times the price it used to be is a BIG DEAL.

Maybe not new poor, but us old poor definitely know what we’re doing. I shop sales, when meat goes on sale, I buy in bulk (I budget $50-100 a month for this), divide it up and vacuum seal it then place it in the deep freezer. Instead of the traditional 1lb of meat per meal, I’ve dropped it down to 3/4, I also buy and cook lentils in bulk puree them then freeze them in cubes to add protein to meals.
Back when brisket was cheaper than ground beef, I would buy the largest in trimmed brisket I could afford then cut it up into other things, stew meat, roasts, taco meat, and some would end up in the meat grinder as ground beef. Then I took the extra fat and rendered my own tallow. One brisket could provide 15+ meals, plus enough cooking fat that I didn’t need to buy oil.
Same with other meats, buy a cheap pork loin and slice it into pork chops, a whole chicken can either be cut up into its various components, or if you want to use the whole chicken for dinner, save the carcass and make chicken stock. I save and freeze my vegetable scraps to go in the stock as well so I’m not buying vegetables just to make stock.

Not only is food not claimable on home insurance but negligence and user error typically negate insurance. Usually has to be out of your control for insurance to pay.

No. Only due to power outage or like a power surge, maybe. But the coverage is less than the deductible even if it is for the covered reasons.
15
u/inanutshell Internet Auntie Sep 12 '26
I could only see this working if the freezer itself broke in some way and even then 1k may not even hit the deductible.
15
u/JicamaAppropriate920 Kitchen Witch Sep 12 '26
Homeowners insurance probably has a $1k deductible, plus cost will go up if you make a claim, if this even would be covered and I highly doubt it.
Homeowners insurance is typically only used for really large claims

This is why I got temperature sensors that communicate to an app on my phone. Losing food like that was a lesson I only wanted to learn once. Anytime the temperature starts climbing above a set limit, my husband and I are immediately notified. Has saved our stand up deep freezer and chest freezer multiple times, and also the fridge. Well worth the $50ish for the sensors and hub.

The husband should have checked, even after telling the oldest to do that.
If the freezer is so old and clunky; it might be time to retire it. If that's not possible, there are alarms that one can buy to put inside that will go off when the door is opened. It doesn't have to be a "smart" appliance for the alarm to be installed

A few years back I had something similar happen, in that all of my food was gone. Maybe about half the cost because it was just me and my then husband, but we had a storm that knocked out power for a good portion of the city for no less than 48hrs. For me, it was 5 nights with no power, and on the 6th day I got power back just before the afternoon.
It was devestating, and luckily for me at the time I was getting SNAP and they gave me my full monthly amount to replace the food, and things were cheaper. I suggest taking a look into your local churches and charities for food pantries, checking out if your area also has any Little Free Pantries (link here for the movement!), also checking facebook to see if there are any community gardens that have fresh foods to share, as well as any BSTF (buy/sell/trade/free) groups and see if anyone is giving away pantry staples or other food, and making a post explaining the situation. People like helping others in their community, and there is no shame in reaching out when something like this happens. Nextdoor is also a good thing to be on, and asking in your local subreddit for any available resources is a great place to start.

Payment plans, getting a smaller one (or two) would be less then the 1k lost in food. I get that it’s food over time, but if you’re one freezer close away from losing all of it it’s worth getting a new one
A 14 ft deep freeze in my area is 350$

Mine did that a year or so ago with our upstairs freezer which is only for meat (and occasionally icecream in the door which is what he wanted)
Then he and his dad went away for weekend. I didnt go to that floor (its just big tv and gaming station there. Or roof terrace). Found it two days. Rancid meat juice all over the floor and our little storage space. We ended up chucking stuff like the fake xmas tree that soaked in all the juice. Plus rib eye steaks wed found at a really good price, tuna medallons, seafood, tons of food. Massively frustrating. I feel your pain

I'm sorry that happened. That's super rough. The time and effort it took to earn the money to buy the food, the planning and remembering everyone's likes, dislikes, intolerances and allergies. The shopping (likely with kids in tow), the things you put away for when you're too tired to do any real cooking, or for when they paycheque is a bit thin. It's not just the food. It's everything that comes with it.
It's not world-ending, but it does really suck. I'd be upset too.

When we switched from a chest deep freeze to a standing we had this almost happen, we lost some stuff in the door but it had been cold enough we saved most of it.
Not even a month later it happened again and lost everything. We got a really loud and sensitive alarm that honestly goes off too quickly but in the 7 years we've had it, never happened again.
Im so sorry you lost all that food. Losing so much in this day and age is rough

Oooooo, girl.
My husband did this over the summer. It was awful. All the food.

I'm so sorry that super sucks.
Please buy a temperature alarm. This is not your fault and you and your husband knew it was a possibility with your old fridge (could also happen for a number of Mechanical and electrical reasons). The real answer is to buy a Wi-Fi alarm and have it never happen again.

I have been in your exact shoes with my freezer and my eldest leaving it open. He did it a few times. First time is when I lost over 1000oz of breast milk I had pumped for his baby sister. Then another time with the milk. I put a latch on the door and made it clear he wasn’t to open the door. He’s left it open or not latched causing us to lose some meats but not everything. The last time was last year when the door was left open and all the meats went bad. This was after I had spend months stocking up on meats because of the election results. I was prepping. This has all happened over the course of 8 years. I’m constantly.checking the freezer when I go to bed. And it’s made me a bit neurotic but I can’t be mad forever or blame him. I do remind him a lot to make sure the garage freezer is closed but then I double check just to make sure. I figure if I remind him then it’ll eventually stick.
Hope you’re doing well. You will recover. It’ll just be slower than before.

Bet the kid feels bad and the husband doesn’t. Both should pay out of their allowance to feel consequences. Quarters for the kid. Big bucks for the dad.

Really sorry you're dealing with all of that. It's completely understandable that you'd be feeling heartbroken and defeated. I would be feeling the same way. I'd also be feeling very let down by my so called partner but this isn't an advice post so we will leave that be. Just know you are justified in all your feelings. Including in that your burrito should be spicier!
So, does the "no advice wanted" include pointing to freezer smart that will ping your phone if the temp gets out of range? Because after having this same deevastating discovery happen one tim, I swore never again. Especially where I live in Phoenix, a freezer being left ajar or suffering a mechanical failure makes spoilage happen so much faster than I would discover it. I didn't want to risk all my food and the freezer itself rotting if I couldn't catch the temp being out of range in time so I bought a smart sensor for it.
I don't buy into a lot of the smart home things because I don't want to make my life more expensive to have it be slightly more convenient or techy, but this was a purchase I felt good about right away

My toddler has turned off our deep freezer at least 2x this summer where I didn’t catch it in time. We have a baby gate keeping him and the dogs from the kitchen, but it gets left open sometimes.
People always ask, how did he turn it off why was he in the kitchen, just so many BS questions trying to assign blame. It’s got the dial right on the front, after the second time I taped over the dial so it can’t be turned.
Accidents happen, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t cry as I threw out several months worth of meat. The second time, I hadn’t even started restocking the freezer which was better for my pocketbook but worse for my nose because the only thing in it was frozen vegetables. When I freeze meat I vacuum seal it, rotten broccoli is 🤮.
I’m considering temperature sensors just incase, but the tape solution seems to be a low tech and cheaper solution.

Parent here, and i feel your pain and frustration. Since damage is done already and there's nothing yall can do about it, you can either make this a positive learning experience for your son and yourself or keep blaming him and showing frustration which won't benefit you both. About restocking, you don't have to do it all at once. Gradually buy items little by little and before you even know it will be fully stocked. You can have him help grocery shopping or meal prepping with you as he's responsible for the damage. Sorry about your situation!

u/Silaquix Kitchen Witch Sep 12 '26
You misread. A month ago she told husband that the oldest isn't allowed to get in the freezer because it's tricky to close.
Husband forgot/wasn't paying attention and let kid get into the freezer by themselves a few days ago. Husband failed to double check the freezer and also failed to tell OP until after all the food rotted

She said a month ago she let her husband know their oldest isn't allowed to open the freezer. I'm assuming to establish that it's a known rule. She then said her husband admitted that he let their oldest get something from it a few days ago. Not a month ago.

Exactly. How presumptuous to assume that this stash wasn't built up over time, too. Groceries are expensive these days and a waste of food in that amount would leave anyone choked. These comments about "perspective" are incredibly sanctimonious.

I mean if it’s frozen it’s likely been a lot of stuff saved over time. You’re acting like they bought $1k worth of groceries all at once. Although, even if they did, that’s still $1k worth of food gone to complete waste

I collected all the food when I was working, which I'm not anymore. We're a single income family and have been for months. The food there was our reserves and now we have nothing.
My perspective is I have to choose between essential bills and feeding my family when I worked five 12.5hr shifts a week for months in order to stock up on food in preparation for me not working... and all of that is in the trash

u/katleessi Tiny Bodega Rat 🐀 Sep 12 '26
Just because someone saved food in their freezer doesn’t make them privileged, nor does it merit that they need to feel bad for you for living paycheck to paycheck. They didn’t post their financials so it’s ignorant to assume.
I’m not rich by any means, but I shop for groceries on the apps and sometimes they have BOGO, buy one get one 50% off, etc. if I can, I buy in bulk.
Doesn’t mean I’m living in dang luxury having a fully stocked fridge. OP also explained they aren’t working and that had been saved up for a while now (hence freezer).
