I am a new gentoo user . I use neovim . I want to ask how can I use the vim syntax use flag without installing vim

The module is currently not in use, so wpa_supplicant can't boot. Any help (and tip) is appreciated.
EDIT : I had to set the driver as a module(not built into kernel) so that wpa_supplicant and NetworkManager could access it.

Is there an eta for the update of PHP in portage (regarding the remote code execution vulnerability)?

Hello again everyone. Thanks for the help so far ! I managed to install everything correctly in half a day. Now, I have been troubleshooting this issue since this morning and i can't find a way to get past this black screen... I have already stumbled on it some months ago on my 1st install and i fixed it by using de kernel binary. I have configured the kernel by hand during at least 3 hours and made several changes and checks, but i really can't solve this problem. Any help (and tip) is appreciated.
Extra info : simple framebuffer driver is on, uefi compatibility was activated in the kernel config and i have re-generated grub after kernel re-build.
ISSUE SOLVED : Forgot to build "Console Framebuffer" inside the kernel.

Linus Torvalds recently used AI assistance while working on a Linux kernel optimization.
Gentoo has taken a cautious approach to AI-assisted contributions, so I'm curious how the community views this.
Should AI-assisted code be judged primarily by its correctness, testing, and maintainability, or does the use of AI itself raise concerns?
Personally, I think it depends on the user and their ability to understand and verify the code.
What do you think?
I'm also curious whether the Gentoo Council might reconsider its current policy on AI-assisted contributions in light of recent developments.
I'd be particularly interested in hearing the perspectives of Gentoo developers on this.
One thing I'd like to add:
This discussion seems particularly relevant to Gentoo because of its existing policy on AI-assisted contributions.
While AI is being discussed across the Linux ecosystem, Gentoo faces a specific question: should its contribution policy remain unchanged as experienced developers begin using AI-assisted tools?
I'm not suggesting that Gentoo should automatically follow Linus Torvalds. I'm interested in whether the current policy still makes sense, and how Gentoo developers and the Council view these developments.

Edit: Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion.
It's interesting to see the different perspectives on code quality, copyright, ethics, maintainability, and developer responsibility.
My intention wasn't to argue that Gentoo should immediately change its current policy, but to discuss where the boundary between AI-assisted development and AI-generated contributions should be drawn.
Regardless of the tools involved, I believe human understanding, verification, and long-term maintainability remain essential.

A couple of months ago, I switched from Win 10 to Linux (like Mint or Artix) due to driver issues with my Amd Radeon BC 160. As it turned out, the transition wasn't just about the drivers. I became genuinely interested in Linux. I enjoy tinkering with the system—something I couldn't really do to the same extent in Windows 10 and after reading about Gentoo, I found myself very intrigued by the latter. I ended up switching to Gentoo recently, and I’m extremely happy with it!!! I’m particularly pleased with the difference in RAM usage compared to other distr. On mint, using xfce, I was hitting like 800+ MB, whereas on Gentoo, I’ve managed to get that down to 500 MB, even with a VPN and other services running, the total usage stays around 600 MB.

Hello, i've been using firefox-bin all along. i'm thinking about switching to compiling firefox from source instead of using the bin package, but i have a few questions.
thanks.-

I use ext4 rn, but i am thinking, would i be better off with something like btrfs or something else? i really just daily drive my pc, i had some problems with gentoo like corrupting my gpt, but really nothing that bad. 1tb ssd, idk, should i just stay on ext4.
SOLVED(?): I added hosts: files mdns_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns to /etc/nsswitch.conf, now everything works (maybe except when I mount it manually, I have to do //XXX.local/yyy instead of //XXX/yyy, I have no idea why it's like that, but it's still better than doing it by IP)
(I'm not very good with network(?) related stuff, so I apologize for any mistakes in naming things)
I had no issues with connecting to the network drive until recently I think? I wasn't using it for a while, now I can't connect to it from Caja (error from the screenshot translation : Mounting the location is not possible, Failed to retrieve the list of resources from the server: Connection refused)
I also tried smbclient, but I get do_connect: Connection to XXX failed (Error NT_STATUS_NOT_FOUND)
However, I'm able to connect to it through the IP address of the drive, mounting it from /etc/fstab also works without any issues in this way. So it works... But in a quite inconvenient way. I don't even know how I broke it (I thought I messed up during kernel configuration, but it also doesn't work with the binary Gentoo kernel 😔)
If anyone knows what's happening, I'll be really grateful for any help 🙏

I added bsd utils to gentoo using bedrock linux and chimera stratum.
Sorry for bedrock linux OS name on fastfetch. I hijacked gentoo to make it bedrock. So it's gentoo

I wanna know how fast I can emerge Firefox (approximately) because I will get a new pc some parts already came. I’m wondering if anyone even can tell me the answer but it would be very much appreciated.
Here’s my specs
NVMe SSD: Netac 1TB M.2 NVMe Gen4 x4 SSD X7400
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR5 6000MHz CL36-44-44-96
GPU: ASUS PRIME Radeon RX 9070 XT O16G 16GB
After 6 tries I finally got Gentoo installed bare metal on a 10 year old machine. Now I just need the full xfce suite then I'm going good! This is neat!

I've been using i3 for a long time. I absolutely love it, and have had very little issues with it.
However, one thing has always bothered me, so recently I decided to zero in and solve it once and for all.
I would say that I have a pretty minimal setup; for example I don't use anything like lightdm and use the "startx" command.
I can use this keyboard shortcut no problem to lock the screen:
bindsym Control+$mod+l exec --no-startup-id i3lock --nofork -c 000000
But for the life of me I can't figure out how to lock the screen after a few minutes of inactivity (say 5 minutes for example).
I've tried using the recommended xss-lock command:
exec_always --no-startup-id xss-lock --transfer-sleep-lock -- i3lock --nofork -c 000000
But that has never worked. I did a little more research, and correct me if I'm wrong but I presume the xss-lock command is more associated with systemd (and of course I'm using openrc)?
I tried using the xautolock package like many others have suggested:
exec_always "xautolock -detectsleep -time 5 -locker \"i3lock -c 000000\""
And while it "technically" works, it doesn't respect when video or audio is running. I've also read in places where people have suggested putting the mouse cursor in the corner to avoid this behavior, and if it's not that, it's some other equally annoying "solution" that in the end just doesn't seem worth it.
Like I mentioned earlier, I like to keep things pretty minimal so I'm also not using anything like sleep or suspend. So I'm wondering if there is some kind of simple and efficient solution that I'm not seeing?
Or maybe I should just give up and start getting into the habit more of using the keyboard shortcut whenever I move away from the computer? I've never really used any of the loginctl commands and I'm open to any new ideas (well at least new to me - I've used i3 longer than Gentoo)?
Of course any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
