advice Gentleman 101: Day 6 | Remember Names

Wednesdays are for etiquette. Today's lesson costs nothing and people notice it right away: remember their name.

Most of us lose a name about four seconds after hearing it because we're busy planning what to say next. Ways around that:

• Say it back right away. "Nice to meet you, Lauren."

• Use it once more before the conversation ends. Once. Every sentence gets weird.

• If you missed it, ask immediately. "Sorry, I didn't catch your name" is fine in the first minute. Three weeks later, it's awkward.

• When you know both people, make the introduction.

"Mark, this is Daniela. She ran the food drive at work last year." Give them something to talk about.

If you do forget, own it. "I'm sorry, your name has slipped my mind" beats dodging it all evening.

People feel respected when you remember them. It's that simple.

advice Gentleman 101: Day 5 | Find a Good Tailor

Tuesdays are for style, and the biggest upgrade most men never make is tailoring.

A $300 suit that's been properly fitted will look better than a $1,500 suit worn straight off the rack. Fit is what people notice, even when they can't say why.

The usual fixes:

• Trouser hems, so there's a slight break over the shoe instead of fabric pooling at your ankles

• Jacket sleeves, so about a centimetre of shirt cuff shows

• Taking in a shirt or jacket that fits your shoulders but hangs loose around the middle

Shoulders are the one thing a tailor can't really fix. Buy for the shoulders and let the tailor handle the rest.

Most of these jobs cost less than a dinner out. Ask a friend who dresses well where he goes. Once you find someone good, stick with them. They'll get to know your build.

advice Gentleman 101: Day 4 | Start the Week on Purpose

How you handle Monday morning usually sets the tone until Friday.

Habits worth building:

• Lay out your clothes the night before. Shirt pressed, shoes wiped. One less decision at 6:45.

• Eat breakfast. Coffee alone doesn't count.

• Write down the three things that must get done this week. Not twenty. Three. Tackle the hardest one first.

• Make your bed. It takes a minute and it's your first finished task of the day.

• Get to your first meeting or shift ten minutes early.

• Say good morning like you mean it, including to the security guard and whoever's at the front desk.

This isn't about grinding harder. It's about walking in calm and ready while everyone else is still finding their feet.

advice Gentleman 101: Day 3 | Learn to Actually Rest

A gentleman works hard all week. He should also know how to stop.

Four hours of scrolling on the couch isn't rest. You get up tired and a little annoyed with yourself. Real rest takes some intention.

A few ideas for today:

• Go for a long walk. Mid October is the best time of year for it, and the colours won't last. A conservation area, a stretch of a hiking trail, or just your own neighbourhood.

• Read something printed on paper for an hour.

• Cook a proper Sunday dinner and eat it at the table with your family.

• Call your parents. Not a text. A call.

• Leave your phone in another room for one stretch of the afternoon.

Mon projet : La maison du gentleman.

Salutations 🎩

Gentleman 101: Day 2 | Buy Real Winter Boots

Saturdays are for purchases worth making, and with November around the corner, this one is timely.

This is if you have a real winter, if you're not in an area that snows, this one isn't for you.

Sneakers in January slush aren’t a look. Neither are the cracked rubber boots from 2014. A gentleman owns one pair of proper leather winter boots that can handle salt, slush, and dinner out on the same day.

What to look for:

  • Full grain leather, not suede, unless you enjoy white salt lines
  • Waterproofing built into the boot, not just sprayed on
  • A real grip sole with deep tread
  • A plain design in brown or black that works with jeans or wool trousers

Expect to spend $150 to $400. Brands like Kodiak have been at this for decades, and a good pair lasts many winters if you look after it.

Care is simple. Wipe off salt with a cloth dipped in equal parts water and white vinegar, let them dry away from the heater, and condition the leather a few times a season.

Buy now. By the first big storm, the good sizes are gone.

advice Gentleman 101: Day 1 | Plan the Evening

It's Friday. Whether you're three dates in or fifteen years married, there's one question worth retiring tonight: "So, what do you want to do?"

It sounds polite. What it really does is hand her the job of planning, deciding, and taking the blame if the night falls flat.

Do the work instead:

• Pick the place and book it. Know where to park or how long the walk is.

• Have a second option ready in case the first is packed or she's not feeling it.

• Offer a choice between two things you've already sorted out. "Thai, or that pasta place you mentioned last month?" is a gift. An open question is homework.

• Remember what she's said she wants to try, then actually take her there.

• Phone in your pocket. Not face down on the table. In your pocket.

Married guys, this matters more for you, not less. Planning a night out tells her she's still worth the effort.

What's your favourite Friday plan? Share it below.

Man cave

How many of you have a man cave? What you use it for and how you decorated it or what kind of furniture do you have? I find rugged dark oak polished furniture very appealing.

advice Suitable outfit change for a groom?

I’m getting married in April with the ceremony in a very traditional Chapel (UK) and the reception in a Wine Estate.
I’d quite like to go traditional for the ceremony (probably morning dress), but that isn’t meant to be worn after 6pm. Our party will be going until midnight.
I also wouldn’t mind being in something that stands out if I changed clothes before the evening. Is the second suit appropriate for a groom and does it actually work?
Our wedding theme is beachy blue/sandy colours

Thanks

Advice On Avoiding Meaningless Content and Interactions

One of the ways to manage time is to avoid meaningless content and meaningless interactions. Time is the most valuable resource and if you waste it you will never have that time ever again. Meaningless things are things that are worthless and insignificant. What do you consider to be meaningless content and meaningless interactions?

Am i just overthinking?

There was a situation where I was asking for spoon from a canteen. There was this one girl or young woman may I say behind me who was still getting her food. The area was a little crowded behind us about 2 horizonal lines of people, she looked to leave the area as she got her food and it was a little difficult for her to leave which didn't looked like a big deal (which what was I thought or maybe it was). I thought of helping here leave by leading the way as I was somewhat beside her but I was hesitant as I also hadn't received my spoon. So she eventually got herself out.

My motives were out of kindness but I also thought it might be a little overboard to help in what I thought was not of much difficulty. If I was a line of four then your boy wouldn't have hesitated🥲. She was kind of cute not gonna lie so I'm over here thinking if I had fumbled by not lending a hand. I kind of wanted to help but I also didn't want to come off as a simp.

Help me out ladies and gents🥲 so I can be BETTER! Thanks!

5 Rules High Value Men Always Adhere To

High value means you provide value to society and the people around you. These are rules high value men always adhere to.

  1. Never chase women, chase just purpose. Use the energy and time you would use to chase women to do productive things. Achieve your goals, build a career, exercise, become a better man.

  2. Always have self-control. You ought to move autonomously during your entire life. That means whatever you set your mind to you are able to do. If you want to get in better shape exercise, control what you eat, get enough sleep. If you want to be rich control how you use your time.

  3. You never look down. When you walk anywhere always hold your head high. That demonstrates authority and confidence.

4.You admit defeat. Be truthful with yourself. Admit nothing is stopping you from achieving what you want to accomplish except yourself.

  1. Always be loyal. Be loyal to people you get along and your family. Always give all your effort with everything in life.

advice To: My Esteemed Gentlemen

Thumbnail

My dear Gentlemen,
I trust you have attained the most prodigious success in the several pursuits of your lives. Might you be of the opinion that a gentleman ought to select, as the occupation by which he shall earn his bread, that which lies nearest to his heart and affords him the deepest recreation, when, under the enchanting influence of Lady Mary Jane, his leisure hours are otherwise so agreeably consumed?
This gentleman, being exceedingly bewildered in this particular matter, desires only to seek the counsel and wisdom of his brethren.

What’s one habit that made you feel more like a gentleman?

For me, it was learning to take a little more care with how I present myself without making appearance the main focus.
I started paying more attention to simple things like keeping clothes clean and well maintained, choosing pieces that actually suit the occasion, and making sure everything fits properly. Working with StudioSuits also made me appreciate how much a well-made, properly fitted garment can change the way you carry yourself.
But the bigger change was realizing that dressing well only matters if it comes with good manners and respect for other people. Being punctual, listening when someone is speaking, keeping your word, and treating people well have a much bigger impact than wearing an expensive outfit.
For me, dressing properly became less about impressing people and more about showing that I care about the situation and the people around me.
