Super wealthy person punches down on a community that is disproportionately living in poverty or in unemployment. Uses her wealth in support of anti-trans polticians and policies. Then says it's the transgender acitivists who are elitist.

Also disproportionately victims of violent crime. I truly don't get it. Does she also think Voldemort was a righteous crusader against muggles claiming to be magical?

Genuinely, in her first little manifesto she basically says she may have been trans if other people hadn't talked her out of it. I'm convinced this is where it all stems from.

This might be unhinged but I think the closest I’ve ever been (or will be) to this is when you do everything in an open world video game like Skyrim and you’re basically a walking god and you just start doing ridiculous stuff because you’ve won everything and are bored. I think that’s what JK and those in her income bracket are in real life.
16
u/asilentway 5h ago
Well I'd certainly prefer it if she spent her time stacking thousands of cheese wheels like a true daughter of Skyrim should.

Because she sees it as a heroic sacrifice and has enough money that she'll never feel the rammifications of it.
The podcast The Witch Trials of JK Rowling has very good insight into how she thinks and the mental gymnastics she's had to go through to consider trans women to be a threat to women's spaces. I did not like the way that podcast handled things but I'd be a liar if I said it didn't at least give you glimpse into the mold on her frontal lobe.

33
u/TemporaryElk5202 6h ago
If you understand the warped TERF conspiracy theory then you can follow how they construe trans rights to be elitist.
TERFs think cis women = oppressed. TERFs thinks trans women = men who are stealing access to resources intended for (cis) women. They think trans rights = a conspiracy to replace cis women with trans women.
The arguments against trans women have A LOT of overlap with arguments against gay men in the mid 20th century.
Back then, some people argued that if gayness was accepted, then men would always preferentially choose other men over women as life partners. They argued that if you tolerated people not following traditional gender roles (and accepted men doing tasks typically associated with women like housemaking or child-rearing) then women would be replaced - but that the ONE way women couldn't be replaced by men was childbearing.
The TERF logic is the same. They think that if you could choose between a cis woman and a trans women for a job, people will always prefer the trans woman, because the trans woman is "really" a man and is therefore superior. This is also why TERFs harp on childbirth and gametes all the time too, they're like "the ONE way trans women can't replace cis women is reproduction".
So in their minds, The Elite = men, and trans women = men, and they think they are colluding to replace women.
This is also part of why so many TERFs are fascists and neonazis and stuff (like Kellie Jay Keen). TERFdom fundamentally sees men as superior/in control/predators and women as inferior/weak/victims.
A lot of woman TERFs also hate being women. I don't mean that they are secretly trans. I mean like they feel like womanhood or being born female was a curse they had to endure, that they were limited by.
Rowling is very insecure. She tries so hard to meet some kind of feminine ideal re: appearance, yet is also like "I'm cool because I do masculine coded things like drink whiskey and smoke cigars on my yacht, and write gritty neo-noir thrillers".
Seeing trans women choose to live as women, and be accepted as women, really viscerally triggers something in her on a fundamental level, because she feels like she wasn't even accepted as a woman, and feels like it's some kind of stolen valor.

u/smashing_aisling 6h ago

Full disclosure in that I am not reading what she wrote, which I concede means my reply is less meaningful, but I can read between the lines on what she's saying here as it's a commonly weaponized argument.
The "elitist" angle to trans activism is one that comes up a lot; that indulging in this sort of thing is what only privileged, monied people in "safer" societies can do; that it's some sort of dilettantism that those with idle time can deal with.
It reminds me of how often you'll hear people say things like "blue collar workers don't want [trans issues] at their doorstep", ignoring that the trans population has more in common with blue collar/service industry workers in general because they TEND to be.
This actually came up with my employer when, after Trump's re-election, we asked them to validate whether they were still committed to the handwavey DEI stuff from before (I don't want to have to give a shit about my employer being involved there, they're capitalist losers, but you know) and the response was that they were focused on "global" issues.
What that means again is that it's largely a western affectation; "real" people elsewhere don't have "time" to be trans.
Again, not true - trans people exist everywhere. This is all stupid, stupid bullshit that a rich-ass woman throws out instead of doing literally anything else with her time and I'm tired of it.
There's a joke in my community about how we are all just handing money back and forth routinely; so many of my friends need mutual aid help a lot. Trans people are discriminated against by employers (openly and subtly), they're dealing with being alienated from friends/family, they're facing homelessness just like a lot of people. The idea that we're all monied people is just so fucking laughable I don't know why I even entertain any of it with a response but I'm so sick of it

"As everyone knows, I’m in the privileged position of never needing to work again and of not needing state run services, but I once lived hand to mouth. I was one of the women who couldn’t afford to insulate herself from potential physical harm and who fell into the categories of both domestic abuse and sexual assault victim. Large numbers of women who’ve never been poor, who’ve never worked the kind of job where they’d be vulnerable to predatory men and who’ve never needed a rape crisis centre have spent the last few years vilifying members of their own sex for fighting to retain their hard-won rights and single-sex spaces, in ways that have shocked and disgusted me. I freely confess that I feel an extra layer of abhorrence for any woman who claims to be a feminist while doing it.
And so I’ll continue to speak out, continue to use my money to help women who otherwise couldn’t afford to go to court, and continue to ensure that women in my area can still access female-delivered, female-centred support after rape."

"I have to suffer being the miserable motherfucker that I am, so you all have to suffer too. the audacity that you would choose to live with freedom, love, and compassion? no. not allowed. trans people being able to pursue happiness and express themselves while i'm still trapped in my toxic hellmind full of hate and angry spores is evidence that they're privileged somehow. they should get a taste of REAL problems like how my children are worried about me and my castle has this draft in the winter."

Ugh, what a miserable, rotten soul. Sounds like she’s rehabilitating her image and reframing her argument around a fantasy. Are there really trans women trying to access breast feeding support, or is that a straw man argument meant to validate her obvious bias?
Whether she actually believes a mainstream trans activism is corrupted by this need for total equality is irrelevant though. She’s painting a picture of a destructive movement aimed at weakening women’s rights in some sort of gender homogenization initiative.
“They created a climate of fear and intimidation whereby a single misplaced pronoun could see a woman disciplined.”
This is an insane claim, when trans women are among the most vulnerable members of society and just want basic protections for their physical wellbeing and dignity.
She wants to make this about some threat to freedom of speech because apparently respecting someone’s choice of pronouns is a burden bordering on oppression.
The only elitist in this argument is the billionaire, using a vastly asymmetric power she earned selling fantasies, gate keeping who gets to be a person in a world built around an incomplete idea of gender.
It’s not a “where women go, we get to go too”. It’s “wherever society supports men or women, we get similar support”. I would expect any woman can empathize with this need, given how recent their own rights started being taken seriously. Just be a decent human and try to accommodate a class of people who have never had a place to be themselves.

It's especially disgusting that she's published this article right now, because it's just come out that a trans woman named Joelle in the UK died after she was denied cancer treatment for 16 days because the hospital refused to put her in either a women's or men's ward. It truly speaks to the contempt and hatred she has for trans people that she's calling trans activist "elitists", when trans people are dieing as a direct result of what JK's advocated for and and funded. Joelle's blood is one her hands !

Trans women having rights does not take away rights from cis women, she is so bent up on hypotheticals that never happened that it rotted her brain, she judges trans women on the merit of what the scummist of cis men will do an created a "better be safe than sorry" narrative. She abused her power and privilege to bully anyone who is not in the same mindset as her over in the uk that ppl are afread to speak up to her., this women has done more damage to women's rights than any man can dream of.
