Endings and Weak Consonants

Hi guys,

I have questions about word structures. I try to understand how to differentiate between the root of a word and the ending. With feminine nouns it is quite easy, knowing that most of the time a X1 is somehow used to end the word.

But for masculine nouns e.g. in singular we have endings (source J.P. Allen)
- no ending
- j
- w

But I guess not every j or w is automatically part of the ending. I have specially problems with ideograms which contains this endings, like A1 for zj “man”. Is it a z.j or a zj?

1) Are there any cues or rules to identify reliable the ending?

Other problem is: when a word contains a weak consonant how can I identify which hieroglyph would be used? I tried to compare the word with alternative writings, but they are not always available.

For example: X1 is also an Ideogram for jt(j) “father”. Normally written with M17, X1. Budge also shows a writing with M17, X1, M17. So I guess the last M17 is the omitted weak consonant.

2) Am I completely wrong with this way of thinking? Is there a rule for words where I don´t have any alternative writings?

Thanks for helping!

Прошу совета у знающих людей.

Hello. I'm an artist and have just started painting two separate female portraits in the style of Klimt: a mother and her daughter. I'm planning to place their names as cartouches. Could someone show me how to spell the names "Polina" and "Evgenia"? It seems the name "Polina" is impossible to spell, so perhaps you could show me how to spell "The most beautiful and beloved"? If I've broken the rules, please apologize and delete my post.

God damn it and my limited knowledge of the matter. How does one tell apart a freaking verb from noun.

Out of curiosity can someone tell me what these symbols mean? I’m reading the Law of One “The Ra Material” and every book has these hieroglyphics. Mostly interested in the beetle and anke one but all would be great to know

Looking for a hieroglypic tattoo

Post image

This is just a quick sketch of a phrase I like to get as a tattoo.
I should read something like: The form in which you have come into existence is already good

Which is a more poetic way of saying: You are good just the way you are
Not sure yet on how detailed I want it to be, I want to place it on my wrist so it won't be that large.

I would like some advice on the phrase, is it correct this way?
Any idea if you can group it different like in quadrats that the ancient Egyptians did?
Should I write the ḫpr phonetic? I like this a better because it is shorter.

Are there any YouTube channels that are good supplements to the Bill Manley and Mark Collier textbook?

I'm literally just grazing the surface of How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs as of tonight, and so far so good, I'm actually finding the language to be nowhere near as daunting as I was expecting, but there's a couple of pronounciations I'm not fully able to hear in my head based off text alone, and I'm sure it's gonna get really tricky really quickly. I learn much quicker when there's visuals and audio, so it'd be awesome if there was something that could accompany be digging into this jawn.

Can anyone translate the hieroglyphs on this coffin panel? I feel like most of the black signs are clearly readable but I didn't get very far with Fabricius or any other tool.

An improved phonetic speller

Hi All,

This is posted with the consent of one of the Mods here in r/EgyptianHieroglyphs. Please note that no AI Slop was used or harmed in the making of this App! Neither was any AI agent used in coding.

Nearly every day someone in this /sub or one of the other Egypt-related subs is requesting a “translation” of a piece of jewelry which is usually a name. Of course, the jewelry is actually a phonetic spelling of an English name or word, not an actual ancient Egyptian word.

There are also plenty of requests by folks who want to design a tat or artwork for a story.

There are a bunch of web sites and apps which can do simple conversions to glyphs. But none of them do it the way an Egyptian scribe would! These simple converters use what’s called the Egyptian alphabet which are just 20 or so single consonants. But Egyptians loved economy and efficiency. There are literally hundred of glyphs which represent two or three consonant sounds at a time and Egyptians loved to use them! Egyptians were also extremely fond of stacking glyphs together to save space, but the simple apps don’t do this.

Aviametrix just built an app which creates phonetic names the way we think an Egyptian would. Using the great databases created for the Aviametrix dictionaries, the app has about 700 hieroglyphs (biliterals and triliterals) for different spellings which all sound the same for a given name or word. You can then pick the version which most appeals to you and export it. Along the way, the app teaches you a little bit about the different glyphs.

The App is in the Apple AppStore and it’s called “Spell it in Hieroglyphs”. If there is enough interest, Aviametrix may try an Android version.

Translation request

Post image

My brother took a vacation in Egypt and brought me back this papyrus artwork of Thoth. I tried plugging it into Google to translate and got "Thoth lord of Hermopolis, lord of the divine words".

Is that correct? I don't trust AI without at least trying to verify with a person.

Are the hieroglyphs here accurate?

Post image

I don't trust anything that looks like this (plus it came from some random insta account). I believe it comes from the maxims of ptahhotep and I found a selection online with parallel texts but it wasn't exactly the same. I found further hieroglyphs on other sites for the quotation that likewise were different.
