Genetics/DNA We're Embark: AMA about our new Mast Cell Tumor Risk Score, now available for all dogs!

Hi all!

We're Embark's science and vet team, and we're here to talk about something we've been working on for a while: our updated Mast Cell Tumor (MCT) risk score.

What's new: Our previous MCT risk assessment could only flag elevated risk, and only for dogs with certain breed backgrounds. Now every dog with a Breed + Health test gets a percentage risk score plus a designation — below-average, average, or elevated. These new results can be found under "Genetic Risk Scores" in your dog's health results.

Why this matters: Mast cell tumors are the most common malignant skin tumor in dogs. The good news? They're also one of the most treatable: more than 80% can be cured with surgery alone when caught early. The hard part has always been knowing which dogs to watch more closely. That's what this score is for.

How it works: Instead of looking at one gene, we built a polygenic risk score that combines signals from hundreds of genetic markers along with breed ancestry and sex to estimate your dog's individual inherited risk. To be clear, the risk score is not a diagnosis: it won't tell you your dog will get an MCT. But it tells you whether your dog's genetics puts them at higher, lower, or average risk compared to dogs generally, and that may change how you and your vet might approach monitoring.

What you can do with it: The single most important step — especially for dogs at elevated risk — is regular body checks. Run your hands over your dog, feel for new lumps, keep tabs on old ones. Your dog will think it's just really good petting. If you spot something new or changing, that's your cue to call the vet.

Here today: (proof)

  • Kari Cueva, DVM, Associate Director of Veterinary Genetics
  • Brett Ford, MS, Senior Scientist in Applied Science
  • Taki Kawakami, PhD, Principal Scientist in Computational Biology

We'll be live from 12:30–3 PM ET and checking back tomorrow and Wednesday for anything we miss. No question too basic or too technical — ask us anything. We'll sign our answers so you know who's talking.

EDIT: Thanks all for the questions! We're signing off for today but we'll be checking back in over the next day or two -- so feel free to drop a question if you came late.

Update 4/16: Correcting something from earlier — the updated MCT Risk score is available for dogs tested from March 2026 onward, not for all dogs tested since the original May 2023 model launched. Dogs with scores under the original model will still see those results. Sorry for the mix-up, and we've edited the affected responses below.

Results - WisdomPanel Bella-Bean’s real results y’all!! Finally!!

Oh my gosh- finally!! Just wanted to share her actual results. Some of the breeds are a surprise, others are not. Also really expected more chihuahua for some reason, maybe bc they’re found in a lot of small mixes. The only thing I’m in confused about on this is that her listed parents & grandparents are all Pomeranian/Japanese Spitz, so I wonder where the other non-spitz breeds came from? If anyone has any theories, opinions, or explanations I’m super interested.

Can’t wait for her Embark results and to see the differences & consistences between the two. Not sure the timeline for results, but I’m thinking it’ll be roughly the same as Wisdom Panel.

Another thing I’d love y’all opinions & thoughts is if I should ask for an upgrade for health testing as well? Since obviously she got another dogs results the first time, and they didn’t want to admit it either, just said “we stand by our results, but here’s a retest”. I don’t want be an asshole or a Karen, but I had to wait a few extra weeks and the extra stress and frustration. I’m leaning towards not asking, since now having Embark a dna + health test.

Here’s a link to the original post, just in case:

I just wanted to take the time to thank everyone who’s followed our journey and taken the time to give your advice, thoughts, & opinions. I’ve really appreciated everyone on here, so thank y’all so much. Y’all really are a great community.

Approximately 3 months old, and found emaciated on the side of the road, hence being lovingly referred to as a ditch shepherd until we get her results back. Any guesses on what my velociraptor might be?

I wasn’t shocked by the results but I am investing in hair care products for when this butchering grows back. My son accidentally acquired this guy from some teenagers who were moving and couldn’t keep all their animals. I melted as soon as he forced a hug on me when I got close enough to greet him. They said he was a “rescue,” we got pretty much zero info on him, they had no idea how old he was or any backstory, but he’s healthy and happy and he barged into my house and made himself right at home. We suspect he’s 2ish years old. He prefers to be held like a baby but is otherwise the most chill.

DNA has just entered extraction phase (embark).

I already know what two breeds her mom is mixed with (allegedly) but unsure of what the dad was.

See if you can guess what she is from her mom’s side, then give me your guesses as to what else she may be from her dad / what her final results will be from the test :)

EDIT ****

Bond Girl is 6 months old !

I would never have guessed this combo. Ziggy is almost 4 years old and weights 36lbs. He’s a rescue from a shelter in Indiana. He’s very sweet and a little clingy, with a surprisingly deep bark.
Now that I know the results, I can definitely see it in his face/forehead/brow.

Just got our results back for our dog Radar and not totally unexpected but the unresolved portion is interesting as he came from a family member who told us his mother was a GSD and father was half GSD and half wolf. His litter mates look more typical black and tan GSD while Radar looks more like his father. (last picture is Radar's father) we thought the embark breed results may show a % as wolf but it didn't.

Awaiting results Shi-Chi, maybe something else?

I included some puppy pics - she is just over 1yr now! We didn’t get her from a breeder, but were told that she is Shih-Tzu/Chihuahua. I feel like she is tall for a chi, and her double coat/fountain tail and long booty hair throws me off a little. I recently learned about the Greek Kokoni under a post of a dog sumilar in appearance, and I can see a lot of similarities with the breed, but idk. It doesn’t help that my mom’s shi-chi was round and basically bald. 🥹 We are getting her dna tested, but I was curious what you guys might think! Will update. :)

I adopted Sam in college in 2011 when he was 6 months old. When I brought him home to my parents house on break, my dad swore he was a pit, then changed his mind and swore he was a bulldog😆. We told everyone he was pit/dalmatian for years before we did his DNA test. The most shocking part of the results is the Aussie. I currently have 2 mixes with Aussie in them and they can be nuts. Sam was so laid back and had a calming presence. He was quite literally the best dog I’ve ever had. He passed away 2 years ago and I miss him more than words can say💙 RESULTS IN COMMENTS SORRY!😆

Molly’s Embark DNA test is currently in the extraction phase … the shelter said they think she is a border collie mix, what do you think?

The last two photos are her as a brand new puppy, and then pictures of her and her littermates ( the shelter originally named her Miri - her littermates are Dory, Piper, and Cara.

Awaiting results Guess what breeds he is! (Embark in analysis)

My almost 17 year old boy (born March 2nd, 2010), Maxwell! We've wondered about his breed for his entire lifetime, calling him a "Yorkiepoo" (which no doubt I think he has, though there's definitely more in him). I'm thinking he has Yorkshire Terrier, Poodle, Maltese, and maybe Miniature Schnauzer!

I'm also wondering if he's related/shares any relatives to my 73.8% Yorkshire Terrier, 9.6% Bichon, 8.8% Poodle, 7.8% Maltese, Dolly (born December 21st, 2019). It would be cool to see!

Also, how long did it take for your swab to be in the analysis phase to results? I'm so excited!

I really really thought and was hoping that she would have Chihuahua in her. I thought she was Pit Chihuahua. But now I see to Brede in the super mutt that makes her tongue the color it is and her coat the color it is. I’m still surprised that she’s so small only 30 pounds that must be her predominant Breed, because all the other breeds are larger. I’m always just so fascinated with this. She was a dog I rescued from a bad situation. I had no intention of keeping her. After three days I knew she was home. She’s 95% deaf, sassy, devoted and sensitive.

Whiskey is our rescue crack head who even the vet thought was 100% Belgian Malinois but turns out she got a double dose of crazy with Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherd in her results. Her mannerisms are 100% Malinois but she is super sweet and loves everyone. She keeps us laughing most of the time with her goofy personality! She was found as a stray in Texas hill country and was only 37 lbs when we adopted her (see last picture 😭) but she is a healthy 65 lbs of sass and muscle now and spoiled rotten.
