Anyone who reads Ehrenburg’s article carefully cannot fail to notice that its main points are ill‑conceived and clearly erroneous. The reader cannot agree with his portrayal of Germany as a single “colossal gang”…

Comrade Ehrenburg assures readers that all Germans are the same and that they will all be equally responsible for the crimes of the Hitlerites. The article “Enough!” states that “there is no Germany: there is a colossal gang that scatters when the question of responsibility comes up.” The article also states that in Germany “everyone is fleeing, everyone is rushing about, everyone is trampling on each other in an attempt to make their way to the Swiss border.”

It is not difficult to show that this assertion by Comrade Ehrenburg does not correspond to the facts. Today, everyone has become convinced - and this is especially clear from the experience of the past few months - that different Germans fight and behave in different ways. Some of them, with dull persistence, defend fascism, the fascist party, the fascist state, and the Hitler clique by all means. Others prefer to refrain from actively fighting for Hitlerism, to wait it out, or to surrender. Some Germans wholeheartedly support fascism and the Hitler regime, while others, having become disillusioned with the war and lost hope of victory, have grown indifferent to the wild, reckless plans of the “Führer.” And this can be said not only about the civilian population, but also about the German army. A corrosive acid has penetrated the body of the German‑Fascist army. It is not surprising that while some German officers fight for a monstrous system, others throw bombs at Hitler and his clique or persuade Germans to lay down their arms.

What is happening now in the German army and among the German population was foreseen long before by Comrade Stalin. As early as May 1942, Comrade Stalin wrote: “The war has brought great disappointments to the German people, millions of human victims, hunger, and impoverishment.” The war shows no signs of ending, and the human reserves are running out, the oil is running out, the raw materials are running out. The German people are increasingly coming to realize that Germany’s defeat is inevitable. It is becoming clearer to the German people that the only way out of the current situation is to liberate Germany from the adventurist clique of Hitler and Göring” (I. Stalin. “On the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union,” p. 49).

It is clear from this that there is no single Germany in life, and not all Germans behave the same way..

It is clear from this why Comrade Ehrenburg’s point of view is mistaken, as he portrays the population of Germany in his articles as some kind of unified whole.

Comrade Ehrenburg writes in his articles that there is no Germany, only a “colossal gang.” If we accept the point of view of Comrade… If Ehrenburg's position is correct, then it should be assumed that the entire German population should share the fate of the Hitler clique.

Needless to say, that T. Ehrenburg does not reflect Soviet public opinion in this case. The Red Army, fulfilling its great liberation mission, is fighting to eliminate the Hitlerite army, the Hitlerite state, and the Hitlerite government, but it has never set out and does not set out to exterminate the German people. That would be stupid and pointless. When the Nazis falsify the position of our troops and our state and claim that the Red Army is exterminating all Germans without exception, this is understandable. The ruling fascist clique is trying to use this false argument to rally the entire German population to fight against the Allied forces and against the Red Army, thereby prolonging the existence of the criminal and decaying fascist system. However, when genuine anti‑fascists, active participants in the struggle against Hitler’s Germany, express such views, this seems strange and incomprehensible. The Soviet people never equated the population of Germany with the criminal fascist clique ruling in Germany. Comrade Stalin said: “It would be ridiculous to equate Hitler’s clique with the German people, with the German state. Historical experience shows that Hitlers come and go, but the German people, and the German state, remain” (I. Stalin, “On the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union,” p. 43).

The decisions of the Crimean Conference fully align with this Soviet viewpoint, stating: “Our goals do not include the destruction of the German people. Only when Nazism and militarism are eradicated will there be hope for a decent existence for the German people and a place for them in the community of nations.”

It is clear from this that the lives of Germans who wage war against Hitler or who are loyal to the Allied forces are not in danger. Of course, those who are and will continue to wage war against the Red Army and the Allied forces in order to preserve the fascist order will receive no mercy.
