I made the first one (check my profile if you’d like lol) and I sketched out this one too. I would’ve put them both in here but I can only do one image per post so I’ll also put some bunny tax in the comments

New Bunny Index

Initial investments

  1. They’re very high commitment.
  2. They are very clever, have excellent memories and will remember things for a very long time.
  3. You cannot punish them like a cat/dog or it will harm your bond.
  4. If well taken care of, a rabbit can happily live to be 10 years old or older.
  5. Rabbits love to chew and dig and will chew and dig just about anything.
  6. They need to chew to prevent their teeth from becoming a health hazard.
  7. They will need their claws trimmed regularly to prevent health hazards.
  8. Rabbits are not a pet for a child and demand a large amount of attention and responsibility, (Do not buy a rabbit for your child for Easter, unless you’ve done your research and are willing to take on 100% of the responsibilities of having one).

Housing/Setup

  1. They love to run around, hop and thrive outside of cages, using them at night is fine but just make sure they get a minimum of 3 hours to run and stretch per day.
  2. An exercise pen setup is often cheaper than a cage and gives more room to run around when you can’t let them out. You can buy one for $59 on Walmart.com (link here), a litterbox for $6 (link here) and a waterbowl for $5 (link here) which is less than $80 for a decent bunny setup.
  3. While we are not against outdoor rabbits here, it is highly recommended you keep your rabbit indoors with you, this prevents predators from being able to get to them as well as gives you much better opportunity to bond with your rabbit.
  4. If you find it necessary to use a cage because of escaping or other needs I would suggest building your own cage as most of the prefab ones are just crappy design and won’t last the lifetime of the rabbit.
  5. A coated metal grate is NOT a wire cage and shouldn’t cause any issues to their feet, you should still provide all rabbits with their own litterbox and other areas to sit/lie down off of the grate.
  6. I personally use straw for litter for my litter-boxes and put their hay on top of that, you can use whatever type of litter just avoid using rock/sand based litter as it’s bad for their feet.

Diet

  1. They eat 95%+ hay such as Timothy/orchard/meadow hay (/alfalfa if they’re young or elderly) and only 5% or less treats like carrots, apples and bananas.
  2. For a small amount of hay I suggest Oxbow which can be bought at most places (Chewy link) or if you have a proper storage method you can get it for much cheaper by the bale at Tractor Supply Co.
  3. Suggested to give pellets daily, 1/4-1/2 cup per 6 pounds of rabbit (so about 1/4 cup daily for a single dwarf rabbit or about 1 cup for a single average sized rabbit).
  4. Recommend high quality food such as Purina, Oxbow, or Sherwood brand.
  5. You can feed a pellet-free diet but just like all animals rabbits require some sodium so if you don’t provide pellets make sure they have access to a mineral lick or other sodium sources.

OK food/treats and foods to avoid

  1. Once they’re over the age of 4-6 months they can also have unlimited lettuce and greens, but never give iceberg lettuce as it gives really bad gas that can become fatal. *greens should not be the primary diet.
  2. Avoid excessive spinach and kale as they can also give gas, but are perfectly fine in moderation.
  3. The best greens are green leaf lettuce, Bibb lettuce, dark leafed lettuces or locally sourced romaine (store bought romaine has a tendency to get recalled...), also herbs like dill, basil, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage, cilantro and parsley are typical favorites.
  4. I wouldn’t give cabbage because it can cause gas similarly to iceberg lettuce.
  5. Never give human foods (except salad), like bread, diary, cheese, meat or sweets, they will make them very fat and don’t need it and could cause severe GI issues.
  6. They should have unlimited hay at all time, they graze pretty much 24/7. *Hay should be their primary diet.
  7. Avoid giving treats with yogurt in them as these will make your rabbit very fat and rabbits are not intended to consume dairy past weaning and can cause bad GI issues.
  8. Seeds are not toxic or generally dangerous to rabbits, I would not recommend giving treat sticks with seeds because they’re very high in added sugar and cause indigestion or extreme gas which can become a serious issue.
  9. Seeds like black oil sunflower seeds are safe and actually beneficial to coat health, (if you’re not sure, search the internet for information before you give it to them).
  10. Do not give nuts to rabbits because they do not need the excessive nutrients and can cause pasty or foul poops. Additionally raw nuts are typically poisonous, like almonds, which contain cyanide if not cooked properly.
  11. I recommend treats such as: no sugar added dried apple, banana or carrot and occasionally a Cheerio is also acceptable. Just be mindful of the amount of sugar you are giving them, even with no sugar added fruits.
  12. Corn is not specifically bad or toxic but whole kernel corn can get caught in the GI tract and cause a blockage, further; corn will make them very fat quickly and I would suggest avoiding giving corn or treats with corn/corn meal/corn syrup. (Corn is sometimes evasively labeled as ‘maize’ on packaging).

Hydration

  1. Water bowls are easier on a rabbit but are not strictly required, I have both bowls and bottles and they use both.
  2. You should clean your water bowl/bottles with either bleach or vinegar at least once a month.

Necessity for another bunny/Bonding

  1. They thrive in pairs and love companionship of another bunny, if you cannot provide constant attention it is highly suggested to have more than one rabbit. Think of them like little horses, horses need to have another horse around.
  2. Do not allow non-bonded rabbits to be together unsupervised as they can fight and cause some very serious damage to each other.
  3. Do not put more than one rabbit per cage, if they’re bonded and it’s an open enclosure then you can and they should be fine.
  4. For more information about bonding rabbits, I would suggest checking out the excellent resources on rabbit.org (link here)

Spay/Neuter/Responsible Breeding

  1. Many people feel strongly about castration as it helps to calm their hormonal rages and also there are studies that say castrated rabbits live longer.
  2. We are not against responsible breeding but it is a huge, huge commitment and you must be willing to take that on and find all the babies forever homes that love them as much as you do - don’t let just anyone have them.
  3. You can wait a while to castrate your rabbit if there are no behavior issues but it’s best to get it done before about 4 years old as that is when cancer risks become an issue and any older it could be too risky.
  4. If you want a rabbit that is already castrated consider a rescue rabbit, there are thousands of rabbits in rescues in need of forever homes, most of which are already castrated and sometimes even in bonded pairs/groups.
  5. If you are experiencing behavioral issues such as humping, marking, peeing or pooping outside the litterbox a castration will help immensely.
  6. If you decide you want to try to responsibly breed you need to keep three main commitments in mind:
6A. have them as a pet that is also allowed to have babies, they’re not baby factories.
6B. Make a commitment to keep all your rabbits out of shelters; allow no questions asked returns.
6C. Make sure they get a forever home with someone that loves them as much as you do; even if it takes more than one try.

Chewing/Digging/Enrichment

  1. I would recommend untreated wood chew balls or fruit flavored balsa blocks for enrichment.
  2. If you can set up an outdoor pen for your rabbit they would love it and nothing is more satisfying than digging in real dirt, (remember to watch them at all times, also if your area has RHDV around I wouldn’t allow them outside for now).
  3. If letting them outside is not an option there are things called “dig mat, “dig meadow” or “nibble and dig” and they are literally a piece of dirt made for rabbits to satiate their desire to dig.
  4. There are many options for rabbit enrichment and even something so trivial as a cardboard box may be plenty to keep your rabbit happy.
  5. Avoid the “chew toys” that contain seeds and other treats as they are that - treats, despite being advertised as a toy, they are more of a treat.

GI stasis and prevention

  1. GI stasis is a very serious and commonly fatal condition for rabbits, but can be prevented and treated if caught early.
  2. Watch your rabbit’s dropping at all times, if their poops do not look healthy, are odd shapes, pasty, extremely dark, have not pooped in the last 4 hours or are otherwise concerning it is recommended you take your rabbit to the vet as soon as possible, time is of the essence.
  3. Dark colors in urine (including dark red) is normal for rabbits, watch for specks of blood and only be concerned if you see blood.
  4. Watch your rabbit’s routine and body language, if they don’t eat their favorite food or their pellets you can surely know something is wrong.
  5. If they are laying in an odd position like on their side or acting lethargic you should check them for gas by giving them a gentle belly message and if they do not return to normal soon, take to the vet.
  6. Infant Gas Drops are available immediately in most pharmacies or online (Walmart link) and are a safe way to relieve gas in your rabbit and cannot be overdosed on, if however, three doses does not return them to normal, take to the vet.
  7. It is always good idea to have emergency food on hand in case of a GI stasis, there is Oxbow Critical Care (Amazon link) and also Sherwood SARx (Amazon link).

I am by no means an expert but I can answer questions as best I can and find sources and people who are experts. So if you have any further questions feel free to DM me.

Mourning My girl passed

I was finally able to get Ruby spayed, everything looked great and she seemed to be recovering really well, until one day she stopped eating and was cold to the touch. We rushed her to the ER and found out she (likely) had a kidney stone totally unrelated to the spay that caused her kidneys to crash. We tried fluids for a day in case it was extreme dehydration but she just kept declining so we opted for euthanasia.

Her bond, Edward, was also diagnosed with probable cancer, he has a mass on his arm that the doctor is not able to fully diagnose unless we do a biopsy, since i already had to spend nearly $2000 on Ruby between er care and spay, the $400-$800 cost of a biopsy is not possible for me. Our plan now is to just keep an eye on him until his quality of life declines, especially now that his bond has passed.

Its been a hard week, she was at least 5 and I rescued her off the street 3 years ago. He is also around 5, also rescued from the street (ive had him for 5 years). Going through her euthanasia was hard and knowing I will have to go through it again probably in the near future, im struggling with it. Im also feeling guilty that he is alone though he hasnt shown depression symptoms, I brought her home before and after the euth so he could have an understanding of what was happening.

I really thought she was in the clear after her spay so for her to decline so quick, im still reeling a bit. Its been a hard week

Injured or sick My baby has a vaginal tumor. We don't know if she can be operated. Advice on palliative care and quality of life.

So. This might be long and maybe no one will read it, but I want to explain my bunny's health situation so that maybe it can help people give advice or i dont know, while we wait for the vet's answer. My baby, Salem, is a 6 years old female bunny.

When we first got her, we were badly advised by the people who gave her to us. We fed her pellets and hay, no greens. We were led to believe they were snacks, instead of the other way around. And they told us the only reason we would have to sterilize her was if we had a male one.

When she was two, we brought her to the vet for a check-up. She was obviously very overweight. We did out best to make her eat greens, tried to find out what worked for her and what didn't, and so on.

In a year and a half, she was of a decent weight again, though it kept fluctuating We started to ask about sterilization, but our vet seemed unsure (we later found out he treats bunnies but has no special qualification or anything, though he is competent for routine checks etc.), and the only actually specialized one was too far away so we were unsure of making her travel that long for a difficult operation. Between high temperatures that made her feel poorly (she was always kept in the only room with air conditioning), a small problem with sore hocks due to the flooring (we solved it), etc., she was four and still unspayed. She never missed a vet visit, and I always spent the biggest part of money on her. She had treats, a room entirely ful of toys and stuff, and she has always been very well loved. So, believe me when I say I wanted to spay her. But the words of our vet scared us off a bit: he told us it was our choice, and to wait off if she had any weird symptoms, because the chances of her dying during anesthesia were high. He repeatedly told us that bunnies are no cats or dogs, and that it was a very high risk procedure.

I kept feeling uneasy about it, but I belived it was best not to make her have surgery if the vet himself was not that sure.

Now she is six. She started having a teary eye, which led us to investigate for dental problems. Reluctantly we had to take her to the much further away yet specialized vet for a CT scan -she trembled a lot and scared us deeply, but she recovered from the anesthesia (and we found out they have a great protocol for anesthesia... that vet truly is great.) They removed two teeth, and emptied an abscess that was bothering her. We wanted to spay her next thing, as we were much more confident on her being able to go through anesthesia no problems.

Unfortunately, they found a mass, not on her utherus, but on her vagina. We are waiting for the vet to tell us if surgery is possible, but I am not so optimistic.

I can't stop crying honestly and I'm staying awake almost 24h everyday so she is never alone for a second (i am currently briefly unemployed). She is somewhat energetic, and a content bunny who loves cuddles, people singing, and arugula. But I know it will not last.

She is experiencing some signs she might not be well -she licks her privates a lot.

I know palliative care is an option... if some of you went through that, can you tell me how was it for your bunny?

I want to ve with her some more time, and cuddle and make her happy as we can. We have bought so many toys for her. But I have no idea if it's what's best.

Before the anesthesia (a week ago), she kept binkying, played like crazy, constantly had the zoomies. After, though, despite being cuddly, she is much more meek and less playful. Will palliative care help her be as energetic as she was before? Or is it better to let her go now that she is not suffering, if my vet tells me we can't operate her?

I want to do what's best for her. Money is not a problem, we can find a way. Any advice, no matter the cost, will do.

Thank you.

Health Bunny slight head tilt, lethargic and sneezing

Rabbit with a slight head tilt, sneezing/nasal discharge, and suddenly eating less and losing weight – what should I discuss with the vet?

I’m worried about my rabbit Nowie and would really appreciate hearing your experiences and advice so I can prepare for my next conversation with the vet.

How it started:
Monday evening: Nowie suddenly developed a very slight head tilt (around 10 degrees) and was a little quieter than usual. He was still eating normally at that point.

That evening, I started Meranox (25 mg/ml) as a precaution against E. cuniculi (EC). He weighs around 2 kg, and I’m currently giving him 1.5 ml per dose. Initially, I wasn’t sure what dose he needed.
Tuesday: I took him to the vet. They couldn’t find anything unusual at the time. His teeth looked fine, and the vet also examined his abdomen by feeling it. He was still eating normally then and was even hopping around the floor at the clinic.

However, Nowie has been sneezing regularly through one nostril for weeks. On Tuesday, this suddenly became much worse, and he had noticeably more nasal discharge. The vet said they would prefer not to prescribe antibiotics without a clear reason, as the symptoms often return afterwards.

How he is doing now:
Since today, I feel that he has genuinely taken a turn for the worse. He’s much quieter and spends long periods sitting in his tunnel or hiding in his little house. Because he’s been so inactive, I also started keeping a closer eye on how often he uses his litter tray today.

Nowie really hasn’t been himself since Tuesday. Normally, he enthusiastically comes over to me in the morning for his food and even jumps onto the sofa. Now, he no longer comes over for food or treats on his own. I have to hold the food right under his nose, and even then, he only eats small amounts.

For example, he normally eats an entire three-cornered flaxseed treat in one go, but now he only eats a small part of it. He usually gets the whole treat into his mouth at once. He will still eat a few dried pea flakes, though.

Other symptoms I’ve noticed:
He’s lost around 100 g in two days.
I haven’t seen him drink. Normally, his water bowl is empty by the end of the day, but today he hadn’t finished all of it.
He has only used his litter tray twice today, as far as I’ve been able to keep track.
Thankfully, I’ve still seen him produce droppings, but he’s clearly eating much less than usual.
His temperature is 38.2°C (100.8°F).
I only started properly monitoring his litter tray visits today, so I’m not sure whether he’s also been urinating and passing droppings less frequently over the past few days.

What I’m worried about and what I’d like to ask:
Could the chronic sneezing and discharge from one nostril indicate an infection or another problem that could also be causing his current symptoms?

Would it be worth investigating this further or discussing antibiotics with the vet?

Could he still have molar or tooth-root problems despite the normal dental check? Could this explain why he’s eating so little?

Could the slight head tilt and change in behaviour indicate an ear infection, E. cuniculi, or another neurological problem? Today, his head actually seemed less tilted than before.

What tests or investigations would you recommend discussing with the vet in this situation?

Has anyone experienced a rabbit that initially seemed to be eating relatively normally but then deteriorated quickly, despite nothing being found during the first veterinary examination?

I’m going to contact the vet again, but I’m worried because Nowie has genuinely seemed to deteriorate since today, and I don’t want to overlook anything important.

I’ve attached a couple of photos from today. He does still go over to his food, but he stops eating very quickly (for example, he only ate four pellets from his evening meal). He’s spent almost the entire day sitting in his tunnel or little house.

Any experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated! ❤️

Question Please help!

Post image
43 Upvotes

I just came home and found this in a pile of otherwise normal poop. My rabbit is zooming, eating hay, just ate her cecotropes, following me around for food and has no behavioral changes. I did give her a leaf of radicchio last night. She is young (1 or 2 probably) and about 6 weeks post spay. I’m trying to understand if I need to go to the vet… we do have a great exotic vet.

CASE CRACKED!
Update: we have returned from exotic vet! Adult tapeworm confirmed - Drontal Plus given. It’s a rabbit-specific tapeworm and she most likely got it over the summer when she was stray before she landed in the shelter as this worm is contracted primarily through soil. Thanks for being kind and supportive. That scared me! I am mentally preparing for an influx of tapeworms in the litter box.

My beloved S'mores managed to wiggle her way to our modem and proceeded to enjoy a nice chewing session of cords. After taking the wifi out and having me drive 40 minutes to get everything replaced she celebrated her hard work with a good flop. (Ignore the mess it was clean this morning before two fat bunnies decided to spread their hay).

Bunny not allowed to enter the bathroom (cause cleaning chemicals are “easily” reached, even though still in a closed cabinet).
Although I strongly agree (again, cause chemicals) , I am less strict than my girlfriend, who is the one actively closing the door whenever it’s open.
The very second she left, I found him in this state.
I know I should throw him out.
But c’mon, look at him.

Question Found someone’s pet rabbit outside my house

Post image
290 Upvotes

I found this guy about 24 hours ago and ¿he/she? has been in my bathroom since. I know he’s someone’s pet because he had a collar on and he’s very well behaved.

I put him on Facebook, my neighborhood app, all the things, but to no avail so far. I’m looking to find a permanent home for him if the owners don’t come forward, which I am uncertain they will, but I need some advice in the mean time.

Like I said above, he’s been with me for about 24 hours. He’s drank a lot of water, but only had a couple bites of the rabbit food I bought for him, and only peed ONCE with one or two poops here and there. I am growing concerned, but other than that he seems to be healthy and happy, and very friendly. Doesn’t seem anxious or scared, he’s relaxed if anything.

Advice on finding a home for him would be much appreciated as well. I will be waiting a couple of days to see if I hear from the owners, but I’m not able to home him for very long💔

Update: He’s pooped!! We will be getting him some hay today and looking further into a rescue I can send him to.
